Hello everyone from XDA, im new to posting here and new to rooting phones and all that. This Xperia PLAY is the R800at model from at&t running 2.3.3, and its also my first Android phone. I love it but i read about people who root their phones and can make their phone do so much more and run faster and all that. I am not a complete newb to tech stuff, for example i can jailbreak a ps3 and an iPhone. But androids are alot tougher, or so they seem to be since there's many different versions of the same phone like the Xperia PLAY, there's like 4 or 5 different ones. Anyway i just want a complete noob guide to rooting this version phone, (if that's even possible). If there's words or terms that you include that have a specific meaning that you don't think a newb would know, please tell me what it means. One more thing, will i need to unlock boot loader??? Btw wtf does that even mean! Lol..... Thank you so much guys for reading and hopefully responding with a good super newbee tutorial!
Edit: I'm sorry if i made anyone mad, like i said i'm new so i probably should have posted this in the Q and A's section.

What build number do you have? If you've updated to .285 there isn't a way to root yet that we've found. If you are still on .270 the look for zergrush or flashtool to root.

I just went through the same thing, and like spectre said if you have build .285 (go to settings-about phone- build number) it cant be done. So if your on .270 just search for flashtools, superoneclick, or doomlords rooting kit and then follow there instructions.
I've got 0.270... So i guess thats good. Another thing, if i root, will this prevent me from being able to update to the new ICS update later?

Nope you can still update.

I've seen apps like Gingerbreak and z4 root that are supposed to be able to root your phone. Would this method work if i first unlock the bootloader, because they don't work right now.

Download the latest superoneclick, latest flashtool or zergrush from doomlord. All three of those use the zergrush method to root and will work with .270
ZergRush one-click script works the best, IMO
When do you think there will be a way to root the .285 version?
Don't know. I'm seeing if a dev would work on trying to root it. Hopefully they figure something out.

The trick is to root the older firmware, and update through OTA so you keep root. It must be OTA, not PC companion or SEUS.
OK... I just bought the same phone, AT&T unlocked 4G, Android version 2.3.3., but it is build # 3.0.1.B.0.285... does this mean that I can't root it? Anything I can do to get it to root? Like flashing something or some other method?

Use flashtool to go to either the earlier AT&T build or a generic build.
Is there a way to backup or dump the firmware I do have? In case I want to restore it?
I posted a ftf file for the .285 build in the general section. Its probably a few pages in. You can use it through flashtool to get back to stock .285

Thanks a lot... I just rooted my phone now... now I am waiting forever to get the battery application installed.
So since I flashed and rooted my 4g XPlay, will updating it to .285 create any problems? Like not being able to root again or not being able to have root access? And is it better to have .285?

You can go to .285 if you update over the air and keep root. Any other way and you will lose root and you can't root .285

Sorry, what is over the air? And what is not over the air? You are referring to BT?

Over the air is when you update from the phone itself using wifi, instead of plugging it into USB.

The option to update my phone just popped up on my Arc (with Rogers.)
Any body know if it will keep my root, like the previous update, or will I have to reroot afterwards?
I am aware that there is a forum for QnA, but I imagine that this thread will be a common occurance in the upcomming days, and it may be beneficial to have
one that will hopefully be answered here for a few days while people get their udpate notifications.
I also should have named the thread "2.3.4 OTA Update: Keep root?"...

You had right now 2.3.3??
Sent from my MT15i using Tapatalk
Yes, I currently have stock Rogers 2.3.3 rooted, and just got the notification that OTA update is available.
I also have a bunch of bloatware frozen with titanium backup. Should I unfreeze it before updating?
I need to keep root and want to avoid flashing if at all possible, so if OTA doesn't work I'll just live with 2.3.3 until I have the time to deal with flashing.
Last time my contact book was completely messed up by the backup and restore.

Download latest 2.3.4 and update via flashtool. How about root i dont know. I have bootloader relocked and then root is always.

So I would need to update with a separate tool?
I'm sorry but your english is a little hard to understand and I want to be sure about this before I do it.

Flashtool is good. If you uncheck "wipe data" than you data will be keept. When you do OTA(overtheair) update then i dont know about root. Problably you lose it. And i think over wire update is best option.
And via flahtool you keep Root.

Alright, I'll just be patient and wait for someone who has tried it.
2.3.2 root -> OTA update -> 2.3.3 did not remove root
It would be great if I could keep it that simple again.
Thanks for your help though, I'll do what you suggested if OTA doesn't work.
Look neo forum and ther is thread about updating 2.3.3 to 2.3.4 via flashtool without losing root.

I don't want to use flashtool though,
I just want to know if I will lose root from an OTA update,
as the last OTA update did not remove it.
You wont lose root if you do an ota update

I decided to try doing the OTA update, and now I'm suddenly "up-to-date" but I only have 2.3.3.
Did they remove update, or would there be a reason I suddenly can't get the update?

No problem at all with rooted arc to update by OTA... ;-) Just relock your bootloader (otherwise you brick your phone when you use the official OTA :-S)
After you updated, you stil have complete root access..! ;-)

Awesome, now I just have to figure out why the update has disappeared.
And I don't believe I unlocked bootloader, is there any way to confirm?
My phone has gone 2.3.2 -> 2.3.3 OTA -> flash 2.3.2 -> root -> 2.3.3 OTA
I just used the "SuperOneClick root" to root my phone, but the application did not respond and just didn't work. And i also tried downloading Z4root but it says my phone is not compatible. So can anyone tell me an easy way on how to root this phone safely.?
for EI22 Gingerbread: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kwFRzzIqouE
Thanks to qbking77.
Im really new to all of this so..... is there any easier way to just root my phone?
One click roots do not work on Gingerbread. You have to use Odin or Heimdall.

What part do you not understand? I could help t walk you through it I just rooted my epic a few nights back and have had almost every samsung android phone.
Samsung, u need odin to root the epic. No other way around it. When they released 2.3.5, they added a patch in the script so rooting would not stick. In qbkings video, he shows u and gives u the files to help the rooting stick. Z4root are for lower end phones.

EDIT:
This is a step by step guide. What I was looking on this forum but found on other forums and hours of google searches...
downgraded the build/firmware from .285 -> .270
To do this I:
1) Downloaded and installed flashtools on my computer
2) Downloaded .270 build Xperia_Play_3.0.1.B.0.270_ATT.rar
3) Then I followed this YouTube Video.
4) Next I downloaded SuperOneClick [SuperOneClickv2.3.3-ShortFuse.zip]
5) Then I followed this YouTube Video.
I was done in under 30mins.
I now have a rooted r800AT on ver 2.3.3 with build/firmware .270.
----------------------------------------------
OP:
So as a good noob I have looked on the threads, I have searched google, youtube, and this website, I have studied the wiki, and I have even rooted other phones in the past.
I recently purchased an xperia play r800at.
I just want to root it. No custom roms necessary. I would prefer ICS but GB is fine.
I have not found a thread explaining how to root an xperia play v2.3.3 with build .285.
It seems ONLY build .270 and anything before Nov 2011 is able to be rooted [reference here].
The only solution I can think of at this point is to downgrade from .285 to .270 however there is nothing I can find on the internet to do this (or if that's even possible).
Please help. Thanks.
Once you root .270 you can update OTA to .285 and keep root.

Can't really do OTA, because I don't intend to use it as a phone and I also don't have ATT.
However, a new issue arose... I have lost access to the playstation pocket and can't play the crash bandicoot that was pre-installed.
I found this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1036249
But they are all dead links now.
Man I was stupid not to make a copy of my SD card... ugh
If you flashed the stock ftf it should have put it back on there.

What does this(^) mean? The link which OP posted is for stock ftf only, right?
(At least it is so, according to this:xperiagamer.com/Stock-Roms/233-se-stock-firmware-for-flashtool.html)
What was the thing which OP did wrong? My phone is currently sim unlocked. Will I loose it if I flash the stock firmware?
As you can see from my questions, I am a total n00b.
Thanks
Hi All
i used to lurk here but a couple of monhs ago got a contract renewal so decided to 'upgrade' my phone, short story later i just sold my phone and had a new Play delivered today (my old one had a cracked screen so it was needed anyway)
well simply put it has the latest official firmware on it and although i plan on keeping stock this time i would still like to root just to clear out a lot of the bloatware.
can this be done on this firmware as the guides state not on GB after Nov 11
cheers
GTanny

No you can jut use zegrush method which is easy
And maybe super one click but I haven't use it so I wouldn't know
But zergrush works as I did it on 2.3.4
Xperia-Play
NXT 1.3 LE
YNWA!

You cannot use those methods on the latest version of 2.3.4, .58 is last version of 2.3.4 you can root latest version is .62 or .67 i think
You could flash the enhanced ftf which is a rootable version of .58 via zegrush or superoneclick or as i said above hotboot cwm and install the rootfix on your current setup

as far as i know the cdma version of the play never got a version of gingerbread you cant root via superoneclick so his model must be gsm
Actually 2.3.4 on the r800x can't be rooted.... Thats why you have to downgrade to 2.3.3 then it... & update via ota if you want root on 2.3.4.

thanks for the replies guys.
i got a bit carried away and im now on NXT with doomlord v14, really enjoying it, nice and fast and chances are im now going to start modding stuff again but at the moment im just enjoying playing games on a phone again.
hey guys i updated my og with the new software that just came. root and bootl. is gone. cant use the old method now... any ideas how to root?
I'm in the same boat....binarys root method no longer works. I do not believe this is a fix for this yet.

Well not really want to go to stock. Then jb update soon too. How you guys find a way to root
Sent from my LG-E971 using xda app-developers app
Never heard about the root for jelly bean (Bet never checked since last summer though).
Anyway, according to some old info, for rooting JB you need unlocked bootloader or the root must be implemented into rom either
I'm trying to flash old software and again some problems lol. So how can I get the kdz file in the updater? I have the stock file In my downloads but don't find it trough the kdz.
Sent from my LG-E971 using xda app-developers app
JB update "soon" could mean anything, i would not put much hope in that...
also try this
run "msxml.msi" in the KDZ updater folder before running "KDZ_FW_UPD.exe"
bahh
bahhh!!! so the only way to get it back to stock is the LGNPST 2.2.3 ??? damn can someone post it?? i went to the og chat but cant type there... or should i wait till there comes a new way of root? sooo sad that i lost my root!!!!!!!!!!!! now cant get it back in stock!!! cand just do it with kdz updater or?
