root newly purchased Play on 2.3.4? - Xperia Play Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi All
i used to lurk here but a couple of monhs ago got a contract renewal so decided to 'upgrade' my phone, short story later i just sold my phone and had a new Play delivered today (my old one had a cracked screen so it was needed anyway)
well simply put it has the latest official firmware on it and although i plan on keeping stock this time i would still like to root just to clear out a lot of the bloatware.
can this be done on this firmware as the guides state not on GB after Nov 11
cheers
GTanny

I think you need to downgrade to 2.3.3 to root your Play.
Sent from my GT-I9300 using xda premium

You need to hotboot kernal with clockworkmod via fastboot and flash the rootfix zip

No you can jut use zegrush method which is easy
And maybe super one click but I haven't use it so I wouldn't know
But zergrush works as I did it on 2.3.4
Xperia-Play
NXT 1.3 LE
YNWA!

You cannot use those methods on the latest version of 2.3.4, .58 is last version of 2.3.4 you can root latest version is .62 or .67 i think
You could flash the enhanced ftf which is a rootable version of .58 via zegrush or superoneclick or as i said above hotboot cwm and install the rootfix on your current setup

as far as i know the cdma version of the play never got a version of gingerbread you cant root via superoneclick so his model must be gsm

Actually 2.3.4 on the r800x can't be rooted.... Thats why you have to downgrade to 2.3.3 then it... & update via ota if you want root on 2.3.4.

thanks for the replies guys.
i got a bit carried away and im now on NXT with doomlord v14, really enjoying it, nice and fast and chances are im now going to start modding stuff again but at the moment im just enjoying playing games on a phone again.

[Q] TW R800i 2.3.3 unlocked bootloader to 2.3.4

First of all sorry to open a new thread but I've been reading a lot and can't find clear answers to my questions.
I have a Taiwanese R800i, retail not locked to any carrier, running 4.0.A.2.368 (2.3.3)
I already unlocked the bootloader to root my phone with 2.3.4, but the requirements to do that is that I'm already running stock SE 4.0.2.A.0.42 FW and because I unlocked my bootloader I can't use PC Companion to upgrade to 2.3.4 anymore.
How do I know which firmware version of to use 4.0.2.A.0.42 NA/UK/TW?
(TW version is not available in XDA forums anymore, dead link)
Are they safe to use even though I'm in Taiwan? I really don't know the difference between them.
I do know I can get the Chinese input running with Touchpal but:
What else do I lose? Only bloatware? (that's the reason I want to root on the first place)
As far as I know any version should be fine, but make sure you flash R800i firmware and not r800at.

So the only thing I need to worry about is whether the FW is for GSM or CDMA?

How can i root my Xperia PLAY 4g???

Hello everyone from XDA, im new to posting here and new to rooting phones and all that. This Xperia PLAY is the R800at model from at&t running 2.3.3, and its also my first Android phone. I love it but i read about people who root their phones and can make their phone do so much more and run faster and all that. I am not a complete newb to tech stuff, for example i can jailbreak a ps3 and an iPhone. But androids are alot tougher, or so they seem to be since there's many different versions of the same phone like the Xperia PLAY, there's like 4 or 5 different ones. Anyway i just want a complete noob guide to rooting this version phone, (if that's even possible). If there's words or terms that you include that have a specific meaning that you don't think a newb would know, please tell me what it means. One more thing, will i need to unlock boot loader??? Btw wtf does that even mean! Lol..... Thank you so much guys for reading and hopefully responding with a good super newbee tutorial!
Edit: I'm sorry if i made anyone mad, like i said i'm new so i probably should have posted this in the Q and A's section.

What build number do you have? If you've updated to .285 there isn't a way to root yet that we've found. If you are still on .270 the look for zergrush or flashtool to root.
Sent from my LT26i using Tapatalk 2
I just went through the same thing, and like spectre said if you have build .285 (go to settings-about phone- build number) it cant be done. So if your on .270 just search for flashtools, superoneclick, or doomlords rooting kit and then follow there instructions.
I've got 0.270... So i guess thats good. Another thing, if i root, will this prevent me from being able to update to the new ICS update later?

Nope you can still update.

I've seen apps like Gingerbreak and z4 root that are supposed to be able to root your phone. Would this method work if i first unlock the bootloader, because they don't work right now.

Download the latest superoneclick, latest flashtool or zergrush from doomlord. All three of those use the zergrush method to root and will work with .270
ZergRush one-click script works the best, IMO
When do you think there will be a way to root the .285 version?
Don't know. I'm seeing if a dev would work on trying to root it. Hopefully they figure something out.
Sent from my LT26i using Tapatalk 2
The trick is to root the older firmware, and update through OTA so you keep root. It must be OTA, not PC companion or SEUS.
OK... I just bought the same phone, AT&T unlocked 4G, Android version 2.3.3., but it is build # 3.0.1.B.0.285... does this mean that I can't root it? Anything I can do to get it to root? Like flashing something or some other method?

Use flashtool to go to either the earlier AT&T build or a generic build.
Is there a way to backup or dump the firmware I do have? In case I want to restore it?
I posted a ftf file for the .285 build in the general section. Its probably a few pages in. You can use it through flashtool to get back to stock .285

Thanks a lot... I just rooted my phone now... now I am waiting forever to get the battery application installed.
So since I flashed and rooted my 4g XPlay, will updating it to .285 create any problems? Like not being able to root again or not being able to have root access? And is it better to have .285?

You can go to .285 if you update over the air and keep root. Any other way and you will lose root and you can't root .285

Over the air is when you update from the phone itself using wifi, instead of plugging it into USB.

Clarrifcation - LT15i 4.0.2.A.0.62, 2.3.4

Hello,
Been looking around on the forums, and kinda got a jist of how this works for the ARC, I've rooted my own Samsung galaxy S2, but Im trying to do the same for a friend.
as mentioned hes currently running 2.3.4 on LT15i 4.0.2.A.0.62. From what I've read you have to downgrade to .42? if the bootloader is locked. however it it is unlocked (which I think it is/is unlockable) then what do I do next?
I plan to root the phone then probably install cyanogen mod on it instead.
Thanks
You got 3 options with unlocked bootloader
1 you can still down grade to .42 then root with either flashtools or with zergrush easy root method.
2 with unlocked bootloader flash a custom kernel that has root already. Ie doomlords
What ever you do if I bootloader is unlocked r do not update over the air as this will brick you phone.
3 Out perhaps another option would be to flash ics room and get root very easy look for binary part in dev section.
Hope this helps

Thanks! just what I needed.
Im going to Flash to .62 pre-rooted then install clockwork mod and titanium backup then flash to Cyanogenmod.
Thanks again!

[Solved!] [Guide] r800at Root Help! ver 2.3.3 bld .285

EDIT:
This is a step by step guide. What I was looking on this forum but found on other forums and hours of google searches...
downgraded the build/firmware from .285 -> .270
To do this I:
1) Downloaded and installed flashtools on my computer
2) Downloaded .270 build Xperia_Play_3.0.1.B.0.270_ATT.rar
3) Then I followed this YouTube Video.
4) Next I downloaded SuperOneClick [SuperOneClickv2.3.3-ShortFuse.zip]
5) Then I followed this YouTube Video.
I was done in under 30mins.
I now have a rooted r800AT on ver 2.3.3 with build/firmware .270.
----------------------------------------------
OP:
So as a good noob I have looked on the threads, I have searched google, youtube, and this website, I have studied the wiki, and I have even rooted other phones in the past.
I recently purchased an xperia play r800at.
I just want to root it. No custom roms necessary. I would prefer ICS but GB is fine.
I have not found a thread explaining how to root an xperia play v2.3.3 with build .285.
It seems ONLY build .270 and anything before Nov 2011 is able to be rooted [reference here].
The only solution I can think of at this point is to downgrade from .285 to .270 however there is nothing I can find on the internet to do this (or if that's even possible).
Please help. Thanks.
Once you root .270 you can update OTA to .285 and keep root.

Can't really do OTA, because I don't intend to use it as a phone and I also don't have ATT.
However, a new issue arose... I have lost access to the playstation pocket and can't play the crash bandicoot that was pre-installed.
I found this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1036249
But they are all dead links now.
Man I was stupid not to make a copy of my SD card... ugh
If you flashed the stock ftf it should have put it back on there.

What does this(^) mean? The link which OP posted is for stock ftf only, right?
(At least it is so, according to this:xperiagamer.com/Stock-Roms/233-se-stock-firmware-for-flashtool.html)
What was the thing which OP did wrong? My phone is currently sim unlocked. Will I loose it if I flash the stock firmware?
As you can see from my questions, I am a total n00b.
Thanks

xperia play noob in need of help

hello all, a while back, about 3 months ago i tried to mod my xperia play r800x CDMA, i messed the phone up bad trying to install CM9, i was able to get a custom kernel installed before trying CM9, but i ended up trying to repair the phone using a stock rom i found for the r800x, my carrier is Appalachian Wireless, the FTF i used was for a verizon phone and it would not work on my carriers 3G after the flash, so i sent the phone off and my carrier tried to reflash their stock firmware and then 2 weeks later the phone came back and it still wouldnt work for my carriers service, so i ended up buying a new xperia play. im really wanting to get this phone overclocked. it feels really laggy, even with my 64gb sd card and link2sd installed and a 2gb partition for app installs, it feels just like it did with the stock 8gb card, to slow for use, cant play most of the games i have downloaded because of this, most of the apps take a while to load, and the OS just feels like its crawling, like when i try to swipe left and right on the screen, or open the apps drawer, im willing to pay for someone to take the time to help me get my phone pimped out with the best rom and the best kernel, im really not sure what the fastest rom would be for playing games, someone said i should stay with GB, but i have installed cm10.1 on my old nook color and its just about as fast as cm7.2, so i would really like to get a newer rom, like ICS. my boot loader is still locked on this phone, i need to pay to get this one unlocked like i did the first phone, so if anyone has any spare time to help me out i will donate some loot for your troubles

OK, your right about being able to unlock the bootloader from the Sony site, I wish I had known this before paying the $15 to get my first phone unlocked lol, anyways, I now have 2 unlocked xperia plays, I want to test with the one that I messed up first before I use the ROM and kernels on my main phone, I tried to download and install x-parts to get clockworkmod installed on both of my phones but after the install is finished the phone doesn't boot into recovery, I don't even see a blue led while booting the phones and pressing the volume down button rapidly. Any ideas on how to get xparts installed and working on my phones? I'm guessing this should be the next step in getting my phone fixed up? Or is it?

Well are you using 2.3.3? If so use doomkernel v3 for cdma. If your using 2.3.4 use doomkernel v14 it says for gsm but also works with cdma. If you use google sync then stick with 2.3.3 because it doesn't work with 2.3.4. You can also theme 2.3.3 with attacks themes. You can find all these under smokermans index thread.

Lupus wifi won't work with 2.3.3 buy it will work with 2.3.4. The problem is there's no google sync with 2.3.4 because Verizon messed it up.
Do this
Make a backup of your Rom with cwm. Then flash the stock 2.3.3 ftf with flashtool and exclude kernel. So thus on your messed up device first to see if it works. The kernel you said you downloaded is the same one I use. And what exactly is wrongg with the camera dies it say can't connect or does it freeze when you take a pic

Well I don't have Verizon I have Appalachian wireless and the last time I tried to flash a stock Verizon ftf it messed my phone up and my carrier couldn't fix it, it looks like it does something to the 3g, they couldn't get the phone to activate on their service, do you know how I can get a copy of my stock ROM from my carrier, I asked them and they said they don't release those to the public, and my cameras won't start it says sorry the application camera (process com.android.camera) has stopped unexpectedly. Please try again.
