[Q] Nokia Lumia 900 on $50 unlimited prepaid plan - Nokia Lumia 900

I was wonder if some one can conform if i pay full price for Nokia 900 can i get $50 unlimited pre paid plan or do you have to have lte data? I cant seem to find it posted any where and no luck with Google.

Call at&t and ask them.

ATT will know once you insert the sim. Any smartphone won't be able to get Unlimited internet. You'll only get minutes and texts. Internet will be a separate add-on

LTE is not available for prepaid plans. So you will need a plan, but it won't be LTE
Sent from my Lumia 900 using Board Express

You can always use StraightTalk.com
As mentioned above, you won't likely get LTE, but you will get Unlimited Talk, Text, Data. $45/mo. I don't get LTE at my location anyways, so it would work ok for me...

Straight Talk police their network and is not truly limited. If you use more than 100mb in a day, they will call you to remind. Try to stay under 100 MB a day, and 2GB a month and you'll be alright.

I meant not truly unlimited.

So far my Lumia is beast as a straight talk phone. $50 for unlimited talk, text, and 2gb/month data, but no LTE. I could be mistaken, but I don't believe any prepaid service is offering unlimited LTE atm?
If you aren't looking for LTE though, I would highly recommend Straight Talk. AT&T Coverage at a killer price considering you don't get data with GoPhones $50 plan.

So is it 3G?
Could you please run a speed test app and post the results here? And does MMS work?

Yea its just 3G. MMS isn't working yet, but that really isn't an issue. If i've got pics or videos I need to receive I can still do that by just getting the message sent to my email. Here is a pic of my speed test results. 3.41 mb/s down and .99 mb/s up, heck I'll take that.

did you buy the micro sim or bought a straight talk phone and then swap sim card? asking you cause i dd this a few moonths ago and worked, now i tried but nokia lumia 900 dont recognize the micro siim,i bought a samsung t528g and cutted te sim card and swap in lumia 900 but didnt wrk, call startight talk CS and they said i need a special sim card the one they sell for 15 dollars?

use straight talk...works the best. they have a discount for $45 a month if u look on slick deals

I think I am hearing a bit of jealousy...

I use my Lumia on the AT&T network with a prepaid SIM, but I'm pretty sure that the $50.00 unlimitted does not include a Data Plan. I purchase $25.00 for voice on the $2/day unlimitted voice/text and another $25.00 for Data which gives me 500MB.
So it DOES work on a prepaid SIM because I've done it. It also works on full 4G LTE which I tested in San Diego.

[Q] GSM...how does it work?

Currently I'm on Verizon and to be honest, I hate it. I'm in an area where Verizon doesn't have 4G and AT&T HSPA+ speeds are much higher at my house on my girlfriend's phone.
I'm thinking about going GSM when my Verizon contract is up in August.
Here's my question/s:
How does GSM work and how do you pay for your phone service?
How much data do you pay for?
Just pop my t mobile sim card in and go. I'm on contract with them and pay 30 bucks for 5 gb

Correct, if you provide your own phone, they will provide a sim card and you pick your plan
Don't bait the trolls.
Depends if you subsidize and sign a contract. Best deal right now is get $30 T-Mobile plan, gnex $400 goggle play and get best phone ever. The catch with T-Mobile plan is 100 voice minutes and 10c minute overages which isn't bad if you don't talk a lot or use Google voice or something. T-Mobile also offers very competitive regular plans. If T-Mobile isn't great in your area Atnt has some decent alternatives especially if you can get a corporate discount. Or try the other carriers. There's a good thread on it somewhere in gnex forums.
teach a man to fish, you feed him for life. teach a man to fastboot, and you create competency. and less threads on xda.

You have some serious reading to do. I think you're confusing "GSM" and "Prepaid"... GSM is a network technology used around the world on hundreds of carriers. Prepaid is a type of service.

No, its your choice. You don't have to have a contract with Verizon or Sprint either... You just have to buy a phone full price and no one will force you.
If you're going to pay full price for a device, I would recommend going with an MVNO (Mobile Virtual Network Operator) which runs off of AT&T or T-Mobile's network, but saves you about 50% of the cost of running on AT&T or T-Mobile proper. These are "Prepaid" with no contract. You save money because they're not subsidizing prices of phones, and they often have little or no customer service.
As @rbiter mentioned above, there is a great service plan (which I use) from T-Mobile that is only $30 monthly but of course has severely limited minutes. The other front runner on AT&T's network is "Straight Talk" which offers UL Talk/Text and "Unlimited" (actually like 2gb) data for $45. Above that, T-Mobile offers similar prepaid plans with 2gb throttles for $60 or 5gb throttles for $70. Other options include Simple Mobile which has similar plans/pricing.
I recommend reading the Prepaid thread in General. LOTS of people are doing this with the Galaxy Nexus. Read through and ask in there we'd be happy to help with the specifics.

Anyway to tether laptop to Lumia 900

Just wondering if there is a way to tether your laptop or tablet to the Lumia 900 without actually paying the additional monthly fee. I use this feature on my G'Note because I sometimes use my tablet tethered to it a few times a month. Not worth paying extra to use this features maybe like 5 times a month.
I really like the Lumia 900 and thinking of getting one, but just the tethering is holding me back. Price is great at $399 without contract.

When I got my first Lumia 900 from Amazon Wireless (later exchanged 'cause of "purple issue"), that option was available without activation, I've checked it once, got it working and forgot ('cause I don't need sharing).
After your post I've checked again and sharing service is blocked and requires activation from AT&T... Greedy bastards!
I think you may be able to use it, but expect a text from AT&T shortly after stating that your plan has been upgraded to include tethering. That's how I believe it works.

There is no way at this time to use tethering on a Lumia 900 on the at&t network unless at&t activates it... in which case you would be on a tethering plan anyway.

Yeah, I had a 2GB data plan before switching to 3GB LTE (and I have no option to stay with old plan, trick with calling AT&T rep and asking for "locking" old data plan didn't work for me - the reps repeated a lot of times "the data plan will be exactly the same as you already agreed in your agreement" ) and seems like tethering is working with grandfathering data plans. But may be AT&T already changed that too.
Actually it's not fair enough: I'm already paying for my data plan (and they push me to pay more for 3GB, I was happy with 2GB) and it should be my decision how to use my 3GB, not an AT&T! Tethering is not AT&T specific option or their own feature - it's a Mango, WP7 OS 7.1 feature! They just blocked it. What if next year AT&T decide to block GPS receiver until u'll pay 'em monthly or lock phone camera?..
Hmm, "Mother Bell" are already dead for 30 years but the unfair tricks (I've heard about from my friends) have remained unchanged
I called and they said that I have to get rid of my unlimited plan I am grandfathered into and get the $50 a month tethering plan. I had this unlocked on my Samsung focus and miss this feature soooooo much!

I am amazed that so many of you use this for free without difficulty. I know people who have used the hacks here to enable it, and used it with some frequency while travelling. They got a nastygram later on telling them they would loose their unlimitted data plan and be back billed for the usage on the tethered device if they didnt stop.
I have gotten away with some minor browsing just find but I guess there is a threshold at which you are flagged.
This is the reason I have an unlocked android phone as a spare. That way I can throw by sum in it and use the tethering without any hacks and AT&T hasn't said anything.

Hadn't thought about that. I need tethering when I'm on the road. No sense paying $10 for hotel Wifi when I have an unlimited data plan. The problem is I only need tethering for a few trips a year. It's insane to pay $20/month more for a 5 gig tether plan that will only be used a handful of times. I guess I need to find a cheap Andriod phone. I know I'm dreaming but it would be nice if it had LTE.

UK HOX being used in USA

Evening folks,
I've got an unlocked HOX on 3's network and will be travelling to the USA next month on holiday. Rather than pay the horrific roaming charges they want, I'd like to just insert a US prepay micro SIM and use it while I'm there. I'm not so much interested in the amount of talk time or texts I get, but I'd like to be able to use some data while I'm there (perhaps 100Mb?).
Have any of you had experience with taking your unlocked HOX to the US and using data on a prepaid SIM? If so, what would you recommend?
TIA,

In us you have 1 choice for a pre paid micro sim. 2 depending on where your gonna be. If you headed south you might me able to get cricket. they are a prepaid company that just started to sell the 4S. You also might be able to use H20 but I'm not sure if they support micro SD or not. But AT&T will not give you a pre paid micro SD card. I tried they will give you a prepaid standard size sim card you can use a sim cutter the put it in your HOX. assuming the one x will accept in. They us the same 1900mhz band so i don't see why not. Yor last hope will be t-mobile they will sell you a prepaid micro SD card and you can use them just about anywhere in use. Only down side is T-mobile use the 1700mhz band for 4G. So your gonna be stuck on slow 2G(Edge) data speeds because thats the network that use the 1900mhz band. they have only a hand full of cites that use the 1900mhz band for 4G so depending on where you are you might get lucky. Hope this helped you.

Resolved! I spoke at length with an AT&T advisor and was told that all I had to do was go to any of their stores, ask for a $50 Unlimited Plan prepaid micro-SIM, and use that. Unlimited calls, texts, and data for the month that I'll be in the US. I made absolutely certain that she understood I'd be using my unlocked HOX bought in the UK and she stated that'd be fine. Most excellent!

With one possible exception. The $50 plan isn't for smartphones. People trying to use the i9300 in the U.S. on that plan have been consistanly flagged and told via text message that they need to buy a smartphone data add-on.
Here's the info from AT&T's website...
Data Packages
Access the Web, email, Facebook, social networks, and more! Data packages are available with the $50 Unlimited Monthly Plan and the $25 Monthly Plan. Smartphone users must purchase a data package with an eligible plan to use data/Web services.
$25 for 1 GB
$15 for 200 MB
$5 for 50 MB

Gophone att lets you get LTE data with their unlimited talk/txt/2gbs of data for 60. callingmart gets it down to 52. extra data is 10 bucks for 1gb!(optional if you need it)
Also you can use any att phone(including iphone 5) no jailbreaking or changing apn, everything will work out the gate!!! Go to corporate att store and get your sims for free! also have any issues you can go to the att store for help!
customer service is a million times better, and i got my s3 replaced through att cause it still had a year warranty through att. I bought the phone used of craigslist, and it stop charging after a month!
Also please note you dont get unlimited data with straight talk. while its cheap BUT with them turning off data for no reason, not telling people what the data limit is, horrible cs, As soon as i found out gophone was allowing ANY phone they sell on postpaid on prepaid(including iphone 5) AND allowing LTE data. i switched!!!!

Yea i have a iphone 4s as a backup phone. As i was using it as a example because with st, you have to jailbreak to have mms, but with gophone everything works out the gate! which is a positive because alot of people may not want to tweak with their phone to get simple things to work. And what sold me was the warranty claim i got and im on prepaid! While i dont call customer service ever, it nice to know and a piece of mind that i HAVE cs when i need it. and with my area having lte it was a no brainer, and the fact that i can blow my data in a day if i wanted to. you pay for what your getting and KNOW what to except. i got throttled on st because one day i use over 100mb and some days later i get throttled to a useless speed that i cant do anything data wise without being around some wifi on my phone. The only thing st has going for it is it price, but for me and after tax with st, im paying 2-4 dollars more a month but im getting so much more in return!
I've had ST for a while now & I like the service. It's $90/mo after taxes for my 2 phones ( mine & my wife's ) since we pay $42.50/mo w/ the autopay discount deal they had @ the time.
No CS? No problem. I've had AT&T since 2000 until I moved to ST last year. AT&T's CS wasn't very good @ all... it took 3 days of the 5th degree & 3 "senior" techs to finally diagnose one of my phones as non-working... @ this was w/ a family plan that ran us $170/mo after taxes.
The other thing was the removal of my grandfathered plan of unlimited data + 1500 texts for $40/mo when I bought my GS3.
So.. $42.50/mo w/ 2 gigs of data ( throttled after ), unlimited talk & unlimited text is just fine for us. The Iowa City, Ia area doesn't have LTE & I can barely get stable 3G out here; so I'm not concerned about the loss of LTE.
I work at Walmart and we stopped carrying the straight talk/net ten carry over package because they don't sell and from what I've been told the only way to buy straight talk att sims was Amazon or eBay since st didn't sell them anymore. So don't expect to walk into wall mart and buy the sim, they don't do that anymore.
Just looked at the straight talk sight and they do have are "compatible" sims so now I can tell people to go buy it online and leave me alone 14.99 for a sim 45$ "unlimited" everything you'll be paying 63.59$ USD your first go round. In new York at least. Home to 8% sales tax
Don't expect 4g or to be able to use a 4g phone easily. From what st customer service told us is on iphones especially most features don't work, for instance MMS only works from one iPhone to another something im sure you could fix in the APN settings

Anyone on straight talk have to change their APN recently? I refilled the other night before my service ended at midnight, and I lost data. Next day, still nothing! Had to call customer service, and after about 30 minutes of garbage she had me switch my APN from wap.tracfone to att.mvno. Data came back?? I've uses wap.tracfone for a year with no issues!!!

If you don't mind me asking, where do you live? Do you use YouTube? What are your typical speeds? Can you stream with no problems? Stories differ so much from person to person, I just want to make sure all questions are answered if I use this. I have the option of doing the family mobile deal with Walmart and getting an employee discount, which brings the monthly down to like $25, but as its T-Mobile I'll have to do one of the mods to be able to use it. I'm not ever in an area of LTE so I really don't care about that. I just want to make sure streaming (music, video, YouTube) is allowed with straighttalk. Also, if I take my number with me that I've had for 10 years and then find its not for me, do I lose my number?

Use without Sim Card

Alright....I'm sold on this phone......It will be my new phone.
I'm currently finishing out my contract on Verizon (ugh, moving on). In the meantime, I'd like to purchase this one NOW just to get everything setup. I want to flash/tinker/optimize it to my liking. Will I run into any issues doing this with no Sim Card in the phone? Once my contract finishes out, I'll leave Verizon and pop a sim card from somewhere else (maybe T-Mobile).

No, you will not have any problem at all. Just connect to wifi during initial setup! Congrats for finally leaving VZN, glad I did. Who all are you considering. Right now I am using Straight Talk with AT&T's GSM sim; unlimited talk text, and 5 gigs of data (after that 2g) for 45$/month. I can up it to 10 gigs for just 55$/month. Data speeds are insane like 80MBPS down. Service has been great just seeing if there is any other prepaid or contract plans to consider.

Woah! That Straight Talk deal sounds amazing........I want that! I can't beat that with what I've researched. Where you live? Wondering how good Straight Talk is (considering its a 2nd-tier Carrier)

Yeah it really is a great deal from ST. I currently live in Northern VA in the suburbs outside of Washington, DC. Using the AT&T GSM sim your data is not throttled until you reach either the 5gig or 10gig mark according to your plan. ST also has SIMS for VZN (won't work with this phone, and DL speeds are capped at 5mbps), T-Mobile not sure if the speeds are capped, since we have the second sim tray I am going to throw a T-Mobile sim in it. These are no contract plans however you can setup autopay and get a discount. Most of us buy our phones unlocked or off contract now a days anyways so we are getting the same phones and coverage for a discount.
As a long time Verizon customer, then Fi for a year, I have seen no issues with Straight Talk with AT&T.

Wow....I live in Alexandria VA! So, your testimony would be exactly what I'm looking for! Small world. I'll definitely be getting this Straight Talk plan. FYI, just ordered my OnePlus 3.
Did you Order your Straight Talk nano sim card online or did you walk into a WalMart or something?

Always nice to meet a local XDA-er and android enthusiast. I picked up one from WalMart because I couldn't wait after I got my 1+. However the one at WalMart was ~$69.99. It came with Verizon sim cards, ATT sim cards, T-Mobile sim cards and a month of 45$ service. If you just ordered your OP3 i'd say just order your sim online its like 99 cents I think and you have some time to wait .
Any chance you were able to pick up a Dash Car Charger with your order? Still showing as out of stock for our area

As far as I know the service won't be activated until you choose to do so. I mean it's either $55 now or $55 a month from now lol.
tmobile next month is $70 unlimited data with higher data speeds, if you want a lil faster dl speeds i would check that out plus look at the maps for the area you live in and hangout in.
