No phone ROM? - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So, in June will be upgrading my EVO to something new. I would like to flash something that has no phone capabilities whatsoever when it's off contract. Basically become a tablet that I can give to my 3 year old.
I want to make sure he can't accidentally call 911, and also to maximize any space and prevent any annoying error messages due to being deactivated from the network.
Is there anything like that? Or, is there one I can at least strip the phone components out of?

Just remove the phone.apk from system/app with a rooted file manager.
You may also want to remove contacts, contacts sync, messaging, email, etc... All easy enough to do, though it could generate an error on startup though so make a backup first.

Also, there's about 3 other threads addressing this exact same issue/request in this exact same subforum.

I'm assuming people would still want contacts on a tablet.

Why not just pull out the sim card, and put the thing on airplane mode and turn on the wifi?
I use my EVO 4G as something you said. I just don't have a simcard and I have it always on airplane mode (which allows for everything.. wifi, gps, bluetooth, at least under CM7)

Help with wireless tether app

I just rooted my phone mostly for the WiFi but it's doing something a little strange now. Whenever I turn on the Wireless Tether app it shows multiple access points coming from my phone, 5 to be exact. Is there something I'm missing, a way to clear the unwanted names?
Have a screenshot?

Yep, here's what my wireless connections pop up as when I turn on the "Wireless Tether" app.
Note: The Top "Walker" is my home network and the rest are all generated by the phone.
Try reseeting the app and then try activating wpa.Tht way only authorized users can access ur wifi

I've done that but I still have 5 seperate access points being sent out from my phone. I can't seem to change any of the setting for 4 of them.
anyone have any ideas?
same here
You are not alone.
I used os monitor to see 5 occurrences of internet active - sometimes more.
They won't kill and effect memory terribly. Sometimes a reboot is required, however, the internet occurences are still there. The reboot only clears some memory to allow evo to run fast again.
I have no idea how to fix.
By the way, what app did you use to see those occurances. I'd like to check it out.
Thanks.

Sorry for the confusion that is actually a screen shot of my desktop to show multiple access points being listed. I wish there was an app that looked like that to show available wifi.
You get non of those (in your screen shot) when your phone is off?
It's a wildcard, but possible your neighbors have evo's too and running the tether software...

Negative, I can visibly watch them pop up when I turn the tether on and they go away as soon as i turn it off. It also seemed that when I tried to rename one instead of renaming one of them, it would make another access point. Very peculiar.
FWIW...I switched to CM6 and it's all cleared up.
Yea I was gonna say, that's your computer if you change the name and your computer keeps the old ones and adds the new one. My laptop does that too but I can remove them individually.

Malware? UpgradeDroid.apk

So my wife was on her Evo when suddenly the browser opened and started downloading something called DroidSpeedUpgrade.apk. The website I traced and it gave me a forbidden 403 from my PC, but did allow me a DL of the apk from phone. I did not install, look at the crazy permissions! Any idea what this is, or how it opened on my wifes Evo (cm7)?
Thanks
Below is the APK, I wouldnt install it, screen shot is the permissions...
I would backup all apps [except that], then do a fresh re-install of CM7.

I would question if there's already a malware app on the phone if the browser automatically opened to that page.
Check through unfamiliar apps and the permissions associated with them.

That too is true, but hoping he did that already. Though either way, I firmly believe she should do a clean install again; at least go through the last 10 apps she installed, and like said, check the permissions.
If I were to wipe fully with a clean install of a rom, and not log in to Google or restore anything, what damage do you think this could do if I installed it out of curiosity?
I know it could get my phone number, info and whatnot. That alone would probably keep me from doing it... but what's the worst that you think it could do?
If I had an unactivated Android phone then I might do it.

Your curiosity is like mine, I am tempted to just install it, lol. See if the app can be found in app drawer or what, if I can do anything with it, and so on. My wife doesnt have any credit card junk stored on phone, but has a bank app, so that is all bad by itself! Wait, Amazon Market has credit card linked to it, so in theory they can get password and get credit card info from Amazon. On top of bank passwords, all bad! Maybe I am being paranoid, but this rouge apk seems to have to many permissions for it to just install like that.
I have a unactivated LG Optimus S here, I will install it on that and report my findings
edit...INSTALLED!!!
OK, it is just a Task Manager, on the outside that is. What it does is mask itself as a battery saver/task killer. Meanwhile it sends and recieves text messages that cost YOU $9.99 each! Says a minimum of one per week will be sent and or received. If works with either Sprint or Tmobile, according with terms and conditions, which are carefully hidden. For the average user its gonna fool them, the app by itself would not be so bad so one would think they got a awesome app. Meanwhile your Sprint bill is racking up $9.99 texts, I guess you can get them reversed by sprint. But if you have autopay set up it may take a bit to realize you bill payment was a couple hunderd over normal cost Just be on the lookout, the app may do more than what I found, I only scratched the surface of it.

It has permission to change your settings, so it could turn data back on. It can also read your phone information - phone number and such - so if it can send this information out then it can definitely do damage.
I wouldn't try it.

It also gives the user magic powers and allows the user to live forever. THIS is a must install. LMAO! However, I WOULD PERSONALLY *that is if I had time to do this* DECOMPILE THIS CRAP AND SEE WHO THE HELL MADE IT AND WHERE IT IS SENDING OUR INFORMATION TO. then, I would track the person down. and put a bullet in their head or heads. I don't play games with identity theft. oh and we all know the two places they are likely from. either china or Africa. Well, in Africa... I firmly believe most of them should all be put into a grave. :-D
Does this make me a bad person? nope... it sure doesn't. I'm protecting americans. Actually. the government does this on a daily basis. They murder hundreds of people over seas for oil. :-D We gotta have our oil. :-D lmao If they come over here, they are terrorists. If we go over there, we are terrorists. :-D as I just went way off subject...
okay okay. don't install it. final. and why would you install something that you know for a fact is a phone virus? How stupid is that? We need a platform that can tests apks OUT OF A REAL phone environment. like a virtual mobile computer like vmware.
okay, I'm done. bedtime!

[Q] disabling cell radio?

I want to intentionally disable the phone from making any phone calls. I'm running cm7.1 on my evo and I want it to be like a dedicated mp3 player with android market access.
I don't want to use airplane mode; I'm looking for a more permanent solution that can't be easily toggled.
I tried freezing com.android.phone and the dialer storage with titanium backup, but then market compatibility broke. Market returned server error.
Possible fixes (that I've thought of) :
Disabling radio driver?
Tricking market to not depend on phone?
Some phone or cm setting I'm missing?
Permanent airplane mode that still doesn't bug out wifi?
I know on cm builds of tablets (nook color and gtab) know that its a tablet and not a phone, and doesn't come with a phone option. Short of compiling my own build of cm7 (which if it's easy enough ill do), is there a way to trick cm7 into thinking it's a tablet?

Airplane mode is the only way. Once you turn it on, it's really not easy to turn it back off, you have to go to settings-wireless and networks.

Is there a way to set it and remove the option?
I know on Ubuntu Linux, specifically grub bootloader, and each of the options were available to edit on a conf file. I edited mine on my computer and added and deleted lines on mine. Does the android setting rely on a similar conf file?

I am using tapatalk app and it won't show me all my subscribed threads, but I'm pretty sure in general a guy made a thread about how he did it for an EVO he gave to his daughter or something, it listed what you needed to remove. Sorry I realize that's not too helpful, but I will check back here tomorrow and if you didn't find it, I'll post a link.

I found it, see if this works for you. The op says market works.

i don't want to use a sense rom, but i'll give it a shot. i'll report back in a sec. thank you very much for the fast reply!
EDIT: after reading the thread, i kinda don't want to rock sense. that thread isn't applicable is it? i'll try forking around with my cm7.1.zip and see if i can get similar results.
FFS, if you're the one that's gonna be using it, then just don't make calls. You can always toggle Airplane mode off, btw, to use the market.
Just flash amon ra and r2r going green, its sense 3.0 very stable & clean. It's got a built in option to turn off radio

Two posts above completely missed the point.
A) IM NOT LOOKING FOR AIRPLANE MODE SETTING UNDER WIRELESS AND NETWORKS.
B) IM NOT USING SENSE. JUST NO.
c) what I am looking for is a configuration file, and if you've never edited grub or Apache etc, you'll never understand what I mean. I haven't tried the apk removal yet, but I will in a sec
Thanks for your help pointing to the apk removal thread, but I'm hoping for real developer suppot here

Goodluck finding dev help. They are few and far between for the EVO anymore. I suggest downloading the Android sdk, finding some threads on here and other forums and learning it yourself. Biting the hand that feeds isn't going to help.
Boo
solved. Procedure:
1 Flash cm7 and gapps.
2 Let all the gapps install and update in the background.
3 Install titanium backup from newest updated market.
4 Make backup of dialer and dialer storage (com.android.phone and com.android.telephony)
5 Uninstall phone, and battery pull when it force close loops
6 Uninstall dialer storage after the reboot finishes
7 Wifi should still work the market!

SGS3 broken LCD, Remotely controlling from desktop?? [Help]

I have a new Sammy GS3 from Tmo US. My brother had the upgrade, but my original phone broke, so he let me have his contract upgrade, and I picked up the GS3. Long story short, I got a small crack in the screen when I dropped it, but the LCD is shot underneath. We ordered the insurance, but it is under my brother's LINE, not under the PHONE itsself. So I need him to be able to access data for a couple days, but we cant do anything to the phone whatsoever.
I guess my question is, ideally is there an emulator that I can use on the desktop over USB cable? or (more realistically I suppose) even just anyway possible to control it remotely, without using the lcd? make a download here, attempt a call there?
Thanks in advance!!!
You could adb push an app to the phone, but dont know how youd set it up.
Heres what i would do. Download the full stock firmware and flash it using Odin. Put your bros sim into the phone and call him a few times. The phone will have all default out of box settings which includes data on. You may have to wait a few days periodically putting sim in and calling the phone.
Still dont know for sure if thisll satisfy insurance requirements, but worth a shot.
.to get download mode for odin, make sure phone is off, then hold Volume down, home, and power for a few secs. You may feel a quick vibrate but cant remember for sure. Release all buttons. Now press volume up once. You should be in download mode and should be able to see on your pc. Flash the fw and go from there.
Just thought of something, do you know if wifi was active before it broke? If it was off and you didnt disable data then just putting the sim in shuld be good enough. If wifi was on, and youre sure data was not disabled you have 2 options. Go somewhere that the phone cant access a wifi network and itll default to data connection. Or try sending mms picture messages to the phone. It should deliver over data even with wifi enabled...i think.
Good luck!

Wifi calling takes care of data, so an mms wouldn't be over network. The rest of it sounds good though.
Edit: you could just change your wifi password.

I also got to thinking and the micro-hdmi cord should still mirror it upon startup right? so I might be able to get the display up that way, and I 'believe' the digitizer is functioning so if plan A doesn't work I might invest in one of those haha...

Turning E4GT into a "Galaxy Player"?

I am about to upgrade from my trusty E4GT to a new phone.
I am thinking about giving my daughter the E4GT to use as a music / movie / Game (a la Galaxy Player). It won't be activated as a cell phone any more.
What do I need to do? I know how to set it up under her e-mail address and she will only be able to have Wifi access.
But.. is there anything I need to / should delete off the phone to make it easier / work better for her? I don't want it to always be looking for a cell signal or anything like that. Any type of ROM or anything I can / need to flash to it?
It is rooted, if that helps at all.
If I remember right, I tried this with my old EVO but it keep trying to find a cell signal and kept giving an Error message of some sort. I want to avoid that with this one.

You can also delete Phone, Messaging, contacts, etc if you don't want it to be a phone anymore. You get the idea.
Run *#*#4636#*#* from the dialer (should work on all Roms, but test working on stock TW and the latest cm10.1). Open "phone information", scroll down until you see a button that says "then off radio".
That is all you need! If you run on an aosp ROM, many have an option to hide signal icons (again, I know cm10.1 has this option).
