I have a new Sammy GS3 from Tmo US. My brother had the upgrade, but my original phone broke, so he let me have his contract upgrade, and I picked up the GS3. Long story short, I got a small crack in the screen when I dropped it, but the LCD is shot underneath. We ordered the insurance, but it is under my brother's LINE, not under the PHONE itsself. So I need him to be able to access data for a couple days, but we cant do anything to the phone whatsoever.
I guess my question is, ideally is there an emulator that I can use on the desktop over USB cable? or (more realistically I suppose) even just anyway possible to control it remotely, without using the lcd? make a download here, attempt a call there?
Thanks in advance!!!
You could adb push an app to the phone, but dont know how youd set it up.
Heres what i would do. Download the full stock firmware and flash it using Odin. Put your bros sim into the phone and call him a few times. The phone will have all default out of box settings which includes data on. You may have to wait a few days periodically putting sim in and calling the phone.
Still dont know for sure if thisll satisfy insurance requirements, but worth a shot.
.to get download mode for odin, make sure phone is off, then hold Volume down, home, and power for a few secs. You may feel a quick vibrate but cant remember for sure. Release all buttons. Now press volume up once. You should be in download mode and should be able to see on your pc. Flash the fw and go from there.
Just thought of something, do you know if wifi was active before it broke? If it was off and you didnt disable data then just putting the sim in shuld be good enough. If wifi was on, and youre sure data was not disabled you have 2 options. Go somewhere that the phone cant access a wifi network and itll default to data connection. Or try sending mms picture messages to the phone. It should deliver over data even with wifi enabled...i think.
Good luck!

Wifi calling takes care of data, so an mms wouldn't be over network. The rest of it sounds good though.
Edit: you could just change your wifi password.

Thats true, but only if wifi calling is active. Its one of the first things i shut off. But good points on both dude. I didnt even think of changing the network password.

This is one of those ohhhh right, moments. haha thank you guys I'll give it a shot, it just makes me wonder why I didn't think of that...
I also got to thinking and the micro-hdmi cord should still mirror it upon startup right? so I might be able to get the display up that way, and I 'believe' the digitizer is functioning so if plan A doesn't work I might invest in one of those haha...
the android team viewer app will put your screen on your desktop, sounds and everything. if u get it set up with user name and pass

OK, I have been dealing with this since I bought my GSII and cannot find any information about it.
Firstly I want to say that I am completely stock and unrooted.
My phone does not like to keep a stable data connection. About 50% of the time, when I try to do anything that requires a data connection (facebook, browser, gmail, etc.) the 2 arrows under the 2g/3g/4g icon will stick being grey and my phone just sits there "loading". I tried a factory reset, didn't install any apps, and also got a new sim card and the issue remains. It happens everywhere so it is not just a bad network connection.
I decided to post the question here because yesterday I was playing with my brother's GSII, and his did the same thing.. So it made me think that maybe it wasn't just me. Has anyone else experienced this? Or does anyone know what might be the cause?
Edit: I set my phone to use 2g only, and the problem vanished.. So it doesn't like to connect to 3g/4g.

Try going to your mobile network connection settings, choose access point names, hit your menu button and click "restore defaults".. It may fix it, I had data issues and it did the job. Hope it works for you!

Do what the gut above me said. Also call Tmobile and tell them, they will refresh your data connection on their end. That will clear up three problems your having.
But if it's also happening to your brothers phone, it's a network error. Call Tmobile.

I restored the apn settings and had Tmobile refresh my data connection, and it still happens. I noticed today that it's not just data, I'm also unable to call or text when it happens.. Tmobile just said everything tested normal so there is nothing they can do.. And I really don't think it's the phone so I don't want to exchange for a refurbished unless I have to.

Its happened to me before. For about a week, the data connection just dropped. It would come back for a bit and later vanish. I called t-mobile and they guided me through routine steps (i.e. taking the battery out, rebooting, resetting) but nothing seemed to work. They really couldn't figure it out and later told me to replace the SIM. I can't remember if they shipped me one or had to go to the store but either way that relieved the problem. This was on an HTC HD2.
That might not be the case with you though. At one point in time all the phones under my name lost data connectivity just as you explain. This really had no solution but to wait it out.

you mentioned your brother's is doing the same thing, its probably not the phone, but rather the cell tower your connected to is fuggin up. Try going 5 miles from where you currently are and see if its still happening.
Network error
Sent from my SGH-T989 using XDA App
Just in case it's not a cell tower or network problem . . . My SGS2, purchased in October, had the same symptoms as the OP. After trying everything the OP did, and more, I came to the conclusion that the firmware on the phone was corrupt. I used Odin to flash the factory stock ROM & Kernel images (2.3.5 at the time). There was a definite improvement in the faltering/hesitant/fail connectivity problem at that point, but it was still very subpar. So I then also flashed, again using Odin, the baseband ("modem") image - I did it twice for good measure. The problem was finally immediately solved at that point and I had very prompt loading of webpages, etc. Still working fine months later (and even better with a custom ROM). See the thread entitled "[Q]Is there a "true" factory restore for T-Mobile Galaxy S II?" for help about the seemingly same symptoms/problem you (and your brother) are experiencing. If your underlying problem is in fact the same as mine (and the poster of the thread I cited) then it's apparently either a bad factory flash or a post-factory corruption occurrence that is causing your problem . . . the coincidence of your brother also having the same problem aside. Good luck!

Unfortunately I cracked my screen today and can't access any of my phone's memory. I can't even see anything on the screen.
I should've started this thread earlier when I first encountered the problem but a little too late for that.
Well my issue is that I have a rooted and I believe it was a custom ICS rom that was based off the AT&T version when it just came out a little while ago. I can't connect to Kies and never could even with USB settings on the phone activated, and deactiaved.
It's kinda crappy that it can't even be recognized to even get my pictures without being forced to connect through Kies. Is there any other way to get it to connect?
I'll eventually get a screen replacement and do it myself since it costs about the same thru the stupid insurance and at least I'll get to keep all my data if I do it myself.
Damn, makes me miss my stupid iPhone sometimes...

OK so what u would need to do is make sure USB debugging is enabled, and if u can't see ur screen or access anything I'm afraid ur out of luck, that option needs to be enabled in order for the PC to connect, if it was enabled then make sure u have all the necessary drivers installed in ur PC, if both of those are good then idk, ur only other option is a replacement screen

Well bit the bullet and just bought a screen replacement. Luckily I was able to get it unlocked and got all the stuff off. Mainly most important was the pictures that I couldn't get back any other way.
Well to prevent this issue from ever occurring again, it would be wise of you to back up pictures using Google+ Photos.

Hey guys, i have a few questions
i have a tmobile gs3 and am passionately waiting for the JB OTA update. Untill then however, i would love to use CM10 JB ROM. THe only problem is that it doesnt have the tmobile wifi "built-in" app for that. So does anyone know a way for that to happen? (PM me if you know a way).
Also, currently im am using ICS and it seems like i need at least one bar of cellular coverage for wifi to work. If i am not registering a cellular network, my wifi will not work. I noticed this pretty recently and was wondering if it is like that normally. Are there apps or fixes that can allow you to use wifi if you are not registering cellular network at all (kinda like an airplane mode)?
Thanks alot
I will donate to developers if they can help me out
Don't want to be one of those people, but there are a lot of threads on it. But, pretty much, unless it has changed recently, there isn't a wifi-calling for any CM stuff yet and not sure if there will be. Some people were working on a project. There are other roms out there that do have working wifi calling though, might want to take a look at those.
Also, you don't need cell signal for the wifi calling to work.

What do u mean a WiFi built in app? Also have u tried any new radios for cell coverage? And WiFi does not need any cellular service at all

thanks for quick reply guys.
i have had cm10 jb on my gs3 and then i decided that i needed tmobile wifi calling. so once i downloaded stock ics from samsung and installed it, my wifi calling only works when i am registering the cellular network. If i dont have any bars (and wifi is connected) it won't call at all. wjat could be the fix for this?

Well if u flashed the stock ROM with Odin like u said let it boot up then go into stock recovery or if u have a custom recovery wipe data and caches. To get in it is the same way either way. Vol up, home, and power at same time
I just moved to CM10 a few minutes ago and personally, I don't know how I would ever go back to anything less than this. Why worry about WiFi calling when there are plenty of VoIP alternatives that use Google Voice?

can i somehow set it up so that when my tmobile number is unavailable, it redirects it to google voice? But only when my number is unavailable (as in i wouldn't want to set the redirect every time i am planning to go off service). The thing is that i go to school and i see patients all day long, and in some places i have reception and in some i dont. its very irregular and unpredictable. so if i could set it up in the way that "if unavailable, redirect to google voice" type of thing, i would be a happy camper.
Oh and also, even my google voice does not work if i am not registering a cellular network just a bit. (help with this too?)
thanks guys

im not sure what i did, but i know that i did not specifically erase any data. it just seems that wifi calling is an integral part of the firmware that any "random" data on the phone should no phase it. hmm...
Can someone confirm that CM10 JB has a option in the Phone App menu to forward a call when unreachable? I donw want to go thru the hassle of installing it if it doesnt have that option.
thanks alot guys

There should be a setting for phone forwarding just like any other OS/phone. Just change it to your GV number and should be GTG.
Ok so I shattered my screen. No big deal I have insurance. I got a new OG in like 2 days. The thing is the screen is not responsive at all. I mean I can pull the notification bar down but I cant select anything. I have like 42 text messages that I really want to read . Anyone have any ideas about how I might be able to get that stuff over to my new OG
Take the motherboard from the old one to the new one is the only suggestion I got.

^^^This would be the easiest option if you're familiar with opening devices.
If not, hopefully you've paired a bluetooth controller to your phone before. You could turn it on and use it to navigate through your phone and download an SMS backup app.
Worse case scenario, what MIGHT work is to buy a USB-OTG cable and hook up a controller to your device

try this. If you can get the app to open once then your all set.

Now if the phone had OTG support I'd say hook up a USB mouse and have at it but since it doesn't then you have no remote features which sucks in this case.
UPDATE!!!!!!
install this from the web play store https://play.google.com/store/apps/...xLDEwMiwiY29tLmFuZHJvaWRsb3N0Lmp1bXBzdGFydCJd
wait till it is installed or a couple minutes depending on connection speed.
then this from the web play store https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.androidlost
again wait for the install to complete.
now send a txt or call your phone then goto http://www.androidlost.com/ and hopefully you'll see the congratulations screen on the pc.

ok well took my phone to sprint store because i was having a rattling sound in it when u would do like a quick jerk or movement with it...
well they did what ever it was they wanted to i guess and brought it back out to me no more rattle ...
left their and on my way back home I noticed that the background wasnt the same on my lockscreen so i started going through the phone and c they have flashed my phone back to stock...
Ok still no biggie i can just root it and unlock it again well i go to use the play store it says network unavailable..
well i go to network settings and do the usuall checking and making sure roaming and data and all that is on wich it was but the roaming...
I go to see n make sure im still on sprint maybe thats y its no data... whell guess what its not it says chameleon...
whell what the hell is the first thing that comes out my mouth and laughing.. gf says what so funny i said look my phone says im on a chameleon n we both busted out laughing in the store...
well i got home and still no data so i called sprint and we went through the normal trouble shooting and phone restoring procedure..
Those procedires didnt get data to work either so they had me do a ##SCRTN# and after restart they had me do a manual programing, wich still didnt get data to work.
So last thing that they had me do was ##RTN# and once again did manual programming, and of course still no go no data..
After the "advanced tech support guy" came back on the phone he started urgently repeating and emphisizing take the phone the store or where it was i purchased it at.... so monday i gotta call and get a new phone shipped to me since this one is only a week old...
IS THERE ANY WAY TO GET MY PHONE WORKING AGAIN,AND WHAT DID THEY DO TO IT ?
I wouldn't worry about it too much if they're giving you a new phone.. but the whole situation sounds pretty shady..

Im not worried since they replacing it but i still would like to know how it happened and is their a way to fix it incase my retardo kicks in and dont pay attention to what ever it is i was doing...
whats shady me, or what?
easy fix...
1. install nova launcher
2. with nova launcher now set as launcher hold on homescreen to create new shortcut.
3. select new short cut > activities.
4. scroll down the list until you see "Update Device"... click update device then look for a "Branding" submenu.
5. Click on "Branding" and you will make a "Branding" shortcut on your Homescreen.
6. Click new "Branding" shortcut and set Branding to "Sprint"
Confirmed working in both ZV9 and ZVB.
From autoprime
Or just lgnpst to zv9 then do a ota to zvb
Oh and on my old galaxy s 2 when sprint was finishing they forgot to plug in the lcd power *sigh*...
Ive went all the way back to zv7 and worked back up to latest. Its no longer saying chameleon as its net work ... it back to sprint and im able to talk n text sms.... still havent figured out the data side of things, any suggestions or input?

If that doesnt work hop on irc and ask
Hmm, maybe this has been my problem the whole time. I've had my OG since earlier this year and it has always listed "Chameleon" as the network but I never thought anything about it. My issue though, is even though I am in a high 4G coverage zone, I rarely get 4G. I can force it to connect to 4G (using an app I found) and it will connect with full bars, but it will drop back to 3G in like 5 minutes.
I'll have to try the fix rockh11 posted. Does the phone need to be rooted to run that fix?

Lgnpst I think so unlock the bootloader and root it just to be on the safe side
Nova launcher no need for root i think
prl and profile no.
Try doing prl/profile updates via wifi. Alternatively, just wait. I've seen sprint take 2-3 days before data will come back after a reset. I had one blow up when traveling and support convinced me I would have to take it back once I returned to town. Woke up 2 days later an everything was working fine.
