[Q] Chrome elliptical Carl Zeiss Branding on the back - Nokia Lumia 900

Does anyone know what material the chrome elliptical piece is made of in the back of the Lumia 900?
I got a few minor scratches on it and i was wondering if I could buff it out or fill it in with wax or something.
Any ideas?

I believe it is plastic, painted plastic. and it looks to be white under the paint. This is based off of me looking at phones in stores and photos online. Just MHO.

It's a chrome strip. Not painted plastic. Unfortunately I have no idea the durability of that strip so who knows how it will react to buffing.

Yes go ahead and buff it. I used a dremmel with the softest pad and it looks new. Then I covered it with a piece of zagg.

Protector for chrome on camera

is there any type of screen protector material for the chrome on the camera? I hear it gets scratched very easily
Maybe Zagg will make one. Most reviewers see how it scratches so easy.
AT&T will sell the Zagg full body at least. I'm going to try to cut out a custom fit from reg screen protector.
That's a pretty small piece to protect. Knowing Zagg, it'll be $10 + shipping for just that piece.
Alternatively, you can get a silicon skin for the whole phone which I heard fits pretty snug and doesn't add a lot of bulk.
I just bought the gel case and it keeps the back of the phone off the objects you lay it on

People just cut out a piece of clear packaging tape and put it over then chrome! I did just that

I used Incipio case and so far the chrome hasn't been scratched even though it's not completely covered.
food wrap film will do it
I bought the skinomi carbon fiber full body screen protector. It protects every part of the phone including the chrome. Got if from amazon. Might be something to consider.

I got the full body protector from Zagg for $9 + s&h, off of Amazon. I also have & love the silicon skin, can barely tell it's there.

Awesome idea.... Gonna go and do that now. Thanks man!
The store employees repeatedly offered me a "cleaning pad" that stuck to the back side of the phone. They put it on the camera metal. They would come take it off to wipe the screen and then just replace it on the back over the camera metal again.
I just got the Skinomi carbon fiber full body screen protector, and slapped it on. It looks good, but the quality of the clear screen protector is pretty bad. Not as noticeable when the phone is on, but could be much better. The warranty is lifetime, so I might get another. The carbon look parts look really good, and should protect against normal use.
. Ps, the clear screen protector hadn't dried yet. Now it looks fine. The carbon look is pretty cool..
The guys on this thread who have the Skinomi full body protectors, can you post some photos of it applied to the phone?
I'm in the UK and have a white 900,so I want to see which bits of the phone don't get covered by the skin as the bright white would be very noticable if there are fitment gaps.
I'm actually on my 2nd handset in a week as the buttons on the first one were loose and rattly. However, on that first handset the camera chrome got scuffed in just 2 days even though I kept the phone wrapped in a screen cleaning cloth. I've left the OEM protective film on my new one until I have something permanent, just like the OP has asked for.
As selection of colours for a chrome protector would be cool too. Hopefully someone will come up with this on eBay before long In the meantime I'll cut up a 'generic' screen protector into a make-shift skin for the chrome.
IGG full body protector also covers the chrome on the camera. The only cutout on the back cover is for the camera lens hole and the LED flash hole.
I'm using mine under the black cover so the shiny look isn't a bother for me. Just looking to protect the back from being scratched by the case (or debris that gets between the OEM case and the phone body) which I've seen happen on an N9.
I'm going to make one from a spare screen protector I have. I've just checked an the camera hole is the same size as you get from a hole-punch....so I've got a screen protecter here with me in the office today
Here's my temporary solution, a Nokia cover, a strip of electrical tape and a hole punch.
I'll try to get a decent one cut out so that I don't need to cover it up with the bumper. I may also see if a printing company I've worked with in the past would be able to knock up a few sheets of clear, single-coloured and maybe patterns or designs. Chances are it'll be too expensive, but it can't hurt to ask the question.
Bleh. The chrome on my camera is all scratched up. I hate how it's curved.

[Q] Sharp glass edge hurts my ear

Hi,
Do you guys have the same sharp glass edge ? Or it's just mine ?
It hurts my ears a bit when I am in a call, I need to pay attention to do not push close enough to my ears.
It's not that bad, but I don't like that it's scratching my ear.
Thanks
I haven't noticed but then again i bought a bumper day one to have some coverage on it. Perhaps you got a faulty one?
i agree with you here
its a new design feature on the 900 (was not on the 800 or N9)
I don't know why they put the lip there - but it is seriously annoying - maybe its because I have larger than normal ears, but I really have to sit the phone lower across my cheek to avoid scratching my ear up
its my one flaw in the phone, this stupid ridge, that I have never scene on a phone before
if not for this silly design feature, the phone would be amazing - to be honest it does not really make any sense to me, but I wish it were not there too
I would think the reason for it was obvious.... When you set it face down its not laying directly on the glass due to the raised perimeter.

LMAO!
I've never had the edge bother me, or even noticed it, unless I consciously feel for it. I love having that little bit extra piece of mind, knowing my screen has a little more protection.

raised perimeter protecting the screen
Thanks for the comments.
Yeah, it makes sense to protect the screen, but they could have done a better work with this IMHO...
I've notices it at the first time I made a phone call...
Bumber... not sure about that, never really liked them.
Buy the little $20 dollar gel sleeve, it flushes up nicely with the glass edge.
Bothers me too. I agree with the theory that it is to protect the screen, but they could have kept the top edge smooth while leaving the lip's effectiveness unchanged around the rest of the screen.

This.
It barely adds any bulk to the phone and retains the visual lines of the device.

Only problem with the bumper is, it doesn't upraise the back in anyway....and the chrome strip gets all scratched. I ended up with the cyan bumper and put some clear tape over the chrome. The front edges up nicely

There are some good TPU cases on eBay, one of which I bought for the wifes phone, and they fit nicely. I am using a zagg wet protector myself, the dry one doesnt feel as smooth or cover as far.

Repairing body

I picked up a Cayan Blue Lumia 900 off craigslist for $150 bucks which I thought was a pretty good deal. It does have a couple of dings on the corners though (also some slight scratches on the screen, but I'm hoping a screen protector will mostly make these disappear). My question is, has anyone used an emery board, or sandpaper to remove some scratches from the polycarbonate body? It seems as though this would work. Also, from use, the plastic has shined up some; does anyone know a chemical I could use to etch it and give it that matte look it has when it's new? Thanks.

Toast real wood wrap for Moto X

So I just saw that Toast is now making a real wood back skin for the Moto X. I think they look pretty good.
http://www.toastmade.com/Home.html
Apparently, it's glued to the phone with some pretty strong adhesive but they have a removal video that showed no residue when peeled off. I have a dev edition Moto X but I may get one of these in bamboo or ebony.
Anyone else up for a try?

I will probably wind up ordering one, but I'm not sure of the color I want. I have a white front / cement back / black accents. Walnut or Ebony would look best, but which one? <.<
Wow... based on the videos I just watched, the adhesive is serious overkill. I recently got the dbrand mahogany skin and it is much easier to remove, while having no problem staying put.
The dbrand skin looks pretty good, but I removed because I wasn't crazy about the feel. The Moto X feels pretty insane naked and I have yet to find an accessory that improves on it.

I agree with this. I have a case on now but only because it was free. I absolutely love the way the phone feels naked.

correct me if I am wrong, but the dbrand skins are 3M material, thus not requiring the use of very strong adhesives. Real wood on the other hand is a different story

I am no expert on adhesive, and what they are using on the little strips that go on the edges of the iPhone may be necessary. But given the amount of surface area of the back, it seems what they're using is overkill. Even their own removal video shows the removal process as destroying the wood, even with heat being applied.
Is anyone worried about the lip or edge this would have in the back of the MotoX? Unless they taper the wood, you're going to feel some edges on the back.
I guarantee you're going to feel it , I can even feel the edge of the dbrand vinyl skin I have.
Has anyone tried sanding the edges to make it feel more natural?

I've been thinking about it because after a couple months the bamboo is chipping away at the edge.
I almost pulled the trigger on two of these for my wife and I with custom text. Then I read they are glued on. No thanks. I'm not ruining my Developer Edition. Now, if they snapped on like a normal case I'd of done it. We're both disappointed.
I have one on my DE and it looks and feels awesome. There is a removal technique.
i'm thinking about getting one of these. can anyone provide some feedback on the product?
i'm especially interested in the durability, and how the edges feel afterward (some people with vinyl skins complain about rough edges from the skins)

I've been using one for a bit over a month now and have absolutely loved it. Before I bought it I thought the edges would bother me and I was planning on sanding it, but honestly it feels fine (and gives the dimple on the back a much better hold).
None of the glue has lifted and there haven't been any scratches on it (gotten a couple bad drops without any damage).
I personally have the toast back with a glass screen protector, a combo that still leaves the moto x with the same amazing formfactor but keeps it safe from 80% of what usually gets damaged

Question Protector for plastic fold side?

So I went to a Zagg store today and had my outer screen protector replaced, it was toast but lasted a while. I had them also drop the 3DO custom on the back.
But here's the question, has anyone put a protector on the plastic fold trim that says Samsung. I've got one nick on it, and wondering if the mechanism has the tolerance to apply a PET plastic to it. I've seen some on Amazon, any luck, does it work?

I don't think there is a protector for that place because it'll be difficult to open and close the phone. The plastic protector will make it hard to fold the device.

I sure a skin on the hinge of my ZF2 and now my ZF3. It doesn't interfere at all. It's just a thin clear skin like a screen protector.
By the way, the hinge isn't plastic. It's aluminium.

On the silver Fold 3 the hinge is glossy silver, so I think it's actually stainless steel.

Nope. It's aluminium. Samsung made a big deal about the frame and hinge being made of their new "armor aluminum."
Aluminum is also silver, and can be shiny/glossy with either a clear coat or being anodized.
Wow, if it's metal it sure feels like plastic. The gloss paint on it picks up micro scratches like crazy.
