like Trakman reported (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=24834547#post24834547) when the brightness is set to low (automatic or not) the gray colour of my Lumia 900 is more purpleish. You can see it when the keyboard is expanded or in a screen with the Pivot, on the gray out items.
Anybody got the same problem ?
dial ##634# and than run the screen test. IF the color looks right than you pass if not fail and return.
I take a picture with the Lumia 800 and you can see that at low brightness the gray is not so gray.

UPDATE!!!
So, after reading the responses from my original post. I went down to the ATT store where I got my replacement Lumia 900 updated version for a low volume mic and they told me that the screen was normal after three reps inspected it and compared it to other Lumia 900's in the store that were not purple. They said that it could be because of the software update. I told them that my original phone did not turn purple in low lighting and others that have updated the software did not turn purple as well, but the still did not approve the replacement.
So, I went to another ATT store and told them about my purple screen and did not mention anything about the software update and they compared it to other lumia 900's in the store and approve my exchange. So, dont mention anything about software. There is definately something wrong with the screen. My new 900 does not have a purple screen.
Just get Rogers Support on the phone and they flag my device to be replaced. So I'm going to get a new one next week when stores have them in stock again.
I have this issue on an updated phone, too. Think I'll wait a bit before I swap my phone out--but it is annoying.
I also have this issue on my Rogers phone.
On medium and high brightness, grey is grey. On low brightness, grey is distinctly purple.
Should I bother taking it in or are they all like that?
Purple screen AT&T
I picked up a Lumia 900 yesterday on AT&T and have the same purple screen issue reported here. it seems go go away on manual brightness at medium level. The unit I exchanged this for would not even boot past the carrier logo screen. Very disappointed in Nokia's showing here and, coupled with its data issues at launch, it's lack of QC on this product. The large amount of negative feedback on the 800's hardware and software issues seem to be mirrored here with the 900.
this seems like a software bug .. hope nokia fix it ..
Mine has this issue as well.
Do we have a confirmation that this is on all or only some devices?
Us Canadians are very unlucky .. April 16th is done and still no update ... who is going to worry about Purple screen

Lol.
Neither the Lumia 900 or the Samsung Focus were physically branded by Rogers. Its quite nice.
The Lumia 900 does have a Rogers boot screen though... I'm pretty sure that adds seconds onto the booting process...
I just got a replacement Lumia today and noticed the purple hue whenever the phone is on low brightness. It feels like a software bug to be honest. But it still sucks. First I had a headphone jack/freezing issue, now my screen turns purple at times.
They had a similar problem with some N8 phones, but as far as I know after couple of software updates it was gone. I doubt that this is a similar issue.. that would be strange considering the different software platforms, but in both cases its purple..
Mind pointing that out? At first I was convinced it was a software bug but then after looking up nokia purple tint it seems like its a hardware issue that was never solved. Customers are left having to go to the repair center or with Nokia telling them it's normal.
Well guys I just got back from the AT&T store. The replacement Lumia I received yesterday had the purple tint issue and both replacements I got today had the issue. I left with my original phone thinking it might be a software issue. None of the Lumias in the store had this issue though.
Yup, I have a Rogers Lumia 900 and I have the purple tint issue on low light.. I noticed it but it hasn't really bothered me so meh, I am just going to keep it.
Yeah, just returned my Cyan for the white one and I have the purplish tint also when it's on low light. Definitely didn't have this problem on my Cyan one. And I hope they can fix it with a software update.
I know this isn't terribly useful but I can confirm that my updated black Lumia 900 does not have this issue.

Hi there,
I just got my T-Mobile SGS2. When I look straight at the phone screen, I see whites that are yellowish, as if the color temperature is bumped up by +2000-3000K. Tilting the phone 5-10 degrees to the left or right shows proper, much colder whites, as one would expect. The same nice whites can be seen if I tilt 20-30 degrees up/down.
Perhaps I would not have noticed this problem had I not played the with international version of SGS2 - the whites on that phone are just stunning anyway you look at it. I went back to the T-Mobile store and all the SGS2 phones there the same "issue". The guy in the store thinks that is how the colors should be...
Am I going crazy here? Is it normal to see this yellow cast with a straight viewing angle? Can someone confirm that their screen shows fine whites at any viewing angle? I'm considering sending the phone back for replacement, but it'd be futile if this slight yellow cast is indeed normal...
Mine is like that too. I think its just a quality of the amoled screen, cause I've seen it on other amoled phones too. You get used to it.

I've checked out/toyed around with close to half a dozen handsets since they came out a couple weeks back and I have yet to see one that has a yellow tint. Every one I've seen has had a blue hue/tint, some approaching a grey cast while a couple others almost like a light mint green. Unfortunately AMOLED screens have the hardest time reproducing white as there apparently is no such thing as a true white LED.
Sounds like the one you got did indeed come a lot warmer than most which tend to me on the cooler side. I wish they would have a factory setting much like most flat panel TVs have for setting/adjusting color temperature to your liking. The blue tint really bugs me but I guess over time you just get used to it. Same would go with yellow too, just have to get used to it. I suppose you could keep exchanging phones as some lucky few out there seem to have gotten handsets with a good color temperature where whites actually look white, but who knows how many times you'd have to try that. I'd bet most places wouldn't be too willing to do that for a customer though.
I'm looking at a yellowish tinted XDA now. Totally dark in my room, auto backlight could be the issue...

Hey Guys,
I just got my GSM Nexus about 2 days ago from Germany (Ordered it online and my uncle bought it here in India for me). The phone is AMAZING! I love everything about it! Specially the screen... but I just noticed something. I was going through some thread regarding the screen of the Nexus. My phone has some serious contrast issues.
The black (Pure black), on the screen is perfect. Say for example - The navigation bar. But when the phone is on low brightness level, the greys turn into purple! This is a common issue, I know, just keep reading..
At low brightness level, I can see the grains on the screen, they are very much visible and all the greys turn into purples! NO idea why! It's actually really annoying, my keyboard, my settings background and notification drop down literally turns purple.
So searching for this issue, I tested the screen through this - http://www.lagom.nl/lcd-test/black.php - The first black, IS PURPLE ON THE PHONE. The background is pure black but the first black sample is purple!
I just noticed that even on 100% brightness I can see the grains and there are some purple stuff I can still see! Specially the starting of the gradient on the Settings menu.
I'm really worried right now. I have the bill/invoice of the phone. The warranty period is 2 year but I'm not sure whether they'll replace the phone's screen here in India through warranty or not. If not, I'll be so depressed.
Any idea as to what I should do?
I would contact them about the issue being resolved through warranty. The only thing I would be worried about if they did cover it would be if they exchanged it for a new one and it ended up having the same problem(since it seems somewhat widespread from what I have read). Not sure how the warranty works though. Best of luck to you!
I went through 3 Galaxy S II's before finding one that had an acceptable (but grainy) display.
My Galaxy Nexus has annoying SAMOLED issues as well, such as vertical lines and color banding, graininess, spots, etc. All I can say is don't expect a perfect screen, even if you get a replacement.
The biggest problem is - The Galaxy Nexus has not been launched in India -.-
I just sent a mail to the head of Samsung service but didn't get a positive reply they're saying that the replacement of the screen will be costly. Really disappointing.
I am really sorry to see that Samsung won't replace this phone. I had this same exact issue with the purple tint especially on low brightness. It is very noticeable on certain backgrounds or shades of black where it suddenly turns purple. The best example I could find was putting the standard color gradient wallpaper that comes with ICS and turn on the clock program and with the brightness on low turn the clock to dark mode and the purple shows up all over the place. It is quite annoying because this affects everything you do with the phone. Luckily I was within my 30 day trial period so I could get it replaced. The new phone is perfectly fine.
Had this happen to me on my replacement phone. Took it in to verizon and the reps thought I was crazy. I tried to explain that it was mostly visible with low light levels and that they should take it into the back and look at it but they just stood there. So, my third phone should be here today and I am going to be pissed if it has any issues.
I still think this is a great phone regardless of the above issues
Yeah I don't think it's the OP's phone that has the problem. I think all Galaxy Nexuses have the same problem.
Sent from my Transformer Prime TF201 using Tapatalk
Really disappointing though. I paid a hell lotta money for this thing It's the GSM version..
I always assumed that this was the standard color pattern of the Gnex. Mine has it, and I've gone through 3 screen replacements so far and all of them had it.
From what I heard Supercurio might be working on Voodoo Color for the Galaxy Nexus so hopefully it will be able to adjust the colour balance so the grey looks more grey. As for the grain effect I don't think there will be a way to fix that since from what I read it is caused by pixel inhomogeneities.
Anyway if it makes the OP feels any better once you get used to it you hardly notice the problems at all unless you specifically look out for it. Any screens you buy have some sort of imperfections and the Galaxy Nexus's is definitely one of the least imperfect.
Sent from my Transformer Prime TF201 using Tapatalk
It took me 3 exchange to get rid of purple but now I have vertical banding.
Quality control sucks...it just that simple.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using Tapatalk
I don't have any grain, but my keyboard looks purple from ~20% and lower brightness. Bit of a shame, it's the only chink in this phone's armor so far, but it ceases to become an issue at ~50% brightness, which I use. Until now I thought it was a part of the ICS colour pallette as even pulling up a sample of dark grey on Google doesn't replicate the purple
Such a weird issue this is! I also have an HTC Sensation with Vanilla ICS 4.0.3 - The greys are perfect due to the SLCD panel, no grains too!
But meh, whatever! The Nexus's screen is sexy! So pure! (At high brightness levels)
I'm always going to love it
Okay great news! I talked to the manager of Samsung Mobile India CC - He agreed and told me to visit the nearest service center. But now it depends on the SC to change the screen or not.
I think this is just normal for this phone...I just got mine and its purple too...no biggee... still an awesome screen.

Exactly! Do you have a grainy screen too?
My first Galaxy Nexus seemed perfect, I didn't even know about these screen problems, because mine didn't have them and I so I really ignored topics about screen problems.
Then I swapped it out for a cheaper open box Galaxy Nexus. Now I'm seeing a purplish tint to my dark wallpaper when I have the brightness level down. And more troubling is I seem to have a grainy effect mostly visible on grey backgrounds at any brightness level (I see it a lot with the Market and Kindle apps). I don't seem to have a grainy effect with other colors though that I notice.
Little disappointed. But don't think there is much I can do because it was an open box. Doubt the retailer would let me exchange it. Does Samsung offer warranty support for the i9250 in the US? I go to Samsung's support website and enter my i9250 model number and it just says invalid.

Just find a service e-mail ID and send them a mail! That's what worked for me! They'll reply back by the next day. Try to convince them as much as you can!
The purple may be common, but it's certainly not normal. My first GN had deep blacks and very nice neutral greys. But it had two dark blotches that were visible on a black background without having to be in total darkness - just evening lighting would make them visible. But the colors were similar to the Nexus S it is replacing. The replacement GN I got has the normal amount of graininess at low light settings, which is acceptable to me, but the colors have a very purple tint and the contrast is not very good - holding it up between the first GN that I have to ship back and the Nexus S makes the purple and low contrast very obvious. Maybe third time will be the charm....
Bought a white 900 at the Microsoft Store tonight.
Suffers from the purple screen problem, and the rattling vibration problem. Also the camera is not as good as my original Titan.
Wanted to love it but it's going back.
Sent from my Lumia 900 using XDA Windows Phone 7 App
first two issues can be solved by replacing it, which they will for sure, and the camera issue is more software than hardware, so an update will fix it as well.
Interestingly, the one I got didn't already have the Nokia update on it. This tells me that the white ones were manufactured right alongside of the black and cyan ones and just held back for a couple of weeks. That's not a surprise, but it means that just because the white ones came out a little later, we shouldn't expect any of the quirks to have been addressed.
The camera quality is disappointing to the point where I am wondering whether I have a defective unit. The picture quality reminds me of a first-generation plasma TV, before the technology had achieved good contrast ratios... for example there are areas of color staining, and of solarization, especially in low-light conditions. I also have artifacts that are clearly in a ring shape as if the lens cover has some imperfections or reflections in it.
From what I am reading, the rattling is widespread and possibly even on all units, while the purple tinge is only on some units. I can't live with either.
I love the device's physical design, and Nokia's exclusive apps are very cool indeed... but my Titan just works better.
If the rattle is in all the units i will not be getting the device. that is a deal breaker for me, sadly.
Well I have the cyan and plan on getting the white tomorrow..i experienced rattling the first day and after that it was totally fine...camera doesn't give me any purplish tinge but the quality isn't so great in low light..also when u exchange make sure u look for the green dot on the box
Sent from my Lumia 900 using Board Express
Both the original one I got and the replacement had green dots and both had the exact same problems of purple tint on 'low' brightness setting, and excessive rattling during vibration.
I had the replacement for only 2 minutes.
The phone is physically gorgeous and in fact I already miss it! But I just can't live with the 2 problems and the camera that's not as good as the Titan's.

wow you really had two lemons on your hand. I still have my original unit, and yes, the vibration rattle was present, but I don't know if I got used to it, or if it actually went silent with time. You can still hear it, but not as loud as when I first got it. I bought the black one from Rogers.
I don't know what the big deal about the "rattle" is. The sim holder vibrates a bit internally when the phone vibrates, it's really not that bad. If you're listening for it you'll hear it, but with the phone in your pocket you don't notice it and it doesn't affect the function at all.

Exactly. It doesn't seem any louder than my old Captivate when vibrating, and while it is a little noisier than my iPhone 3G was, at least I can actually feel this one from my pocket. Much ado about nothing, if you ask me.

While the rattle on my cyan didn't bother me one bit. I can confirm my white one doesn't do this.
New Galaxy Nexus owner with Sprint. Well late last night I dim my screen cause it so freaking bright Noticed a lot of the greys turned purple and the white (stock messaging app) go a lot of grain in it. Looked like I had dust all in the screen. Is this normal? Looked similar to this picture
I play with my phone on minimum brightness all the time and have not noticed this.
It is possible I'm not observant enough though.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using XDA
It's normal.
I don't get the purple hues...but I'm using custom color values.
Which have also reduced the grain. But it's still there.
I may be in the minority here...
But I hate this screen tech. It's my only complaint with this phone.
Nav-bar/Status-bar burn-in potential scares the **** out of me. (Although I don't have any yet...I have to assume it's because I'm so compulsive about hiding the nav bar and using apps that remove the status bar.) And the screen looks like complete crap when it's dimmed.
I mean, it looks GREAT at 30%+ brightness...but browsing in bed and such (low brightness scenarios) always makes me cringe a bit.
I currently have my old fascinate and nexus on hands.
I need to say that Samsung pretty much dropped the ball... :-(
Fascinate screen is so much better looking, though partially because custom ICS rom, which I guess incorporates voodoo tweaks.
I will happily wait while GN ICS gets to that state, but I afraid that it is hardware/ manufacturing process issue and I doubt if anybody will be able to fix it grammatically. Please correct me if I'm wrong. I heard something about gradient fix, but do not completely understand what was fixed and how.
My phone has a slight vertical tint on the right side. I pensive it as pink vertical stripe, followed by green one. Not extremely saturated, but noticeable at any brightness level. I've stopped by Verizon store to see if other phones have it. Out of two checked phones one had noticeable green stripe, another was OK to my eyes.
I got a deal on wirefly and now I'm kind of on the verge - exchange or not. I afraid to get one which will be even worse.
Well I just went back to Sprint and explain it to them. Well since the GN is new that Sprint has no tickets for the purple Screen. So the asshole tells me that it is a software issue and that the next ics update will fix the purpleish colors. I was like WTF it is a hardware issue hahah. I do thank you guys for responding. cant wait to get some Sprint roms avaialble. What do you guys think software issue?
No. its a hardware issue. My GSM doesn't have the purple tint at all. My fiance's first Verizon GNex was the same. One day it died and they sent her a new one and it's screen was very purple tinted. She sent it back and got a new one which didn't have the tint at all.
I would return it.
Thats exactly what I told them and they said to wait for an update. this pisses me off cause they wont let me exchange it at all.

i dont know if its hardware or software but you can try this. its supercurio's display expert and might help. it did get rid of most of the purple for me, still can see it with certain grays. as for the grainy white, my first galaxy nexus had that problem at low light too. its almost like a transparent cheese cloth over the screen and some lines running down it. i returned that one.
just keep trying with a different rep. the first one i talked to pretended not to see anything wrong with my phone so i talked to the manager and got the exchange after about 15mins. they were still very hesitant. try to call their call center first i find their call center reps are usually more understanding.

I have a purple tint, but only at brightness levels going below 15 (setting custom brightness with aokp), but the default brightness was at 19 so I never noticed until I started to mess with the settings. I think its normal, or at least I hope it is. Well now I want to ask, is it normal to have purple tints at really low brightness?
Three strikes and I am out. This is my first amoled screen so I am not really sure if it is supposed to be like it. I will try that apk and see if that works. Thanks buddy. I am honestly afraid to get another one and then it is fully a retarded phone so I will stick with it.
I'm unable to use that apk. Error says "There is a problem parsing the package"

the purple tint is still there for me too but the cold setting in that app helped a lot.
It is a hardware issue even though some software tweaks will help a little bit. My GSM gnex has this issue while my friend's gnex does not have it at all. I can't exchange mine because it is from Poland and I do not know anybody there. I just set the brightness to 50% and the issue is almost nonexistent. So my advice is to exchange it; try another store or speak to the manager. Good luck.

Ya for some reason for me thought it only happens are really low brightness. How about you?
I tried playing around with color calibration on one of my previous purple Galaxy Nexus phones. Got rid of the purple, but then things started looking too green or something.
Not sure how you can calibrate to fix colors at low brightness levels where purples become a problem and not screw up the colors when you increase the brightness levels. Doesn't seem like this would be a good solution.
I have just kept exchanging my phones. And I hate AMOLED, it's great when you get a good one, but it seems like Samsung can't make very many good ones.
Lol. If you're going below stock's lowest setting the purple graininess is normal. Get a grip people. Its a mobile screen and it has tolerances. If you get purple just lowest stock setting, I would say it is not normal but chances are Samsung will say it is within tolerance. I played with root dim the other day my screen got purple and grainy at 4/255 and below. Slightly grainy at 5/255 and 12/255. 13 and higher it was fine. 15/255 I believe is stock's lowest setting.
sent with 3g courage. better recognize. 4g courage coming soon. stock up on diapers.
Has anyone noticed that there is light bleed from the three capacitive buttons into the bottom of the screen.
Like three tiny spotlights flashing into the bottom of the AMOLED screen.
It is more evident when in a completely dark screen in low light conditions.
Does your Lumia 900 exhibit this scenario ?
Lumia 900 White UK version
I’m pritty sure that it happens with all the Lumia 900's
My White Lumia 900 even has bleeding at the top by the sensor,
but this only happens when the screen is totally off and the buttons are lit up when i see the bleeding white light from them (when the phone battery is totally dead and you plug it in is mainly when i saw it) there is a tiny gap between the screen and the black of the buttons that lets the white light from the buttons seep through
Thanks for the reply and information intwischa.
I have exchanged my initial handset and the light bleed is slightly less on the new replacement but it is still there!!
A huge oversight by Nokia if I may say so!
Best phone ever to work in full sunlight. But I guess you shouldn't look at the screen in total darkness cause you will be totally bummed by some light bleed. Can't please all of the people all of the time.
I will be sure to avoid total darkness situations. Still loving my "original" L900, even with some perceived imperfections.

Im sure some people will find this a big deal but I have found very few "reasonably priced" electronic devices with a screen without *some* type of light bleed at an edge.
Screen bleed?
I don't see any screen bleed on my device. Then again, I'm coming from and LG G2X which had significant screen bleed at all four corners. Maybe LG desensitized me to anything that isn't grossly obvious. I also haven't noticed my Lumia rebooting a dozen times a day or overheating in my pocket.
This is a great phone! So glad I made the switch from android to wp!

Indeed this phone has got the best screen for bright sunshine scenarios.
However, the light bleed from the backlight of the capacitive buttons into the bottom of the screen is just poor design!
One expects better internal design from Nokia especially since they are the same company which designed this great Clear Black technology
I was slightly disappointed by the display of my Lumia 900. Indeed the capacitive buttons leak a lot of light into the bottom of the screen but thankfully to Windows, I guess, those are off most of the time. My last Nokia was E7 and that display was absolutely awesome. Excellent visibility, great color reproduction and real 100% blacks (unlike most Samsung AMOLED displays I have seen), no light leaks or purplish tint or anything. I'm yet to see a display that's better in any aspect, except resolution, than E7's.

I had this on my original whiteLumia. But, haven't noticed it at all on my second white one that I exchanged for the purple tint issue. Guess that's one of those "variances" that occur during manufacturing.
can you guys take photos? my amaze that i just sold had horrible bleed to the point i had to turn off the lights lol
My Nokia has the same problem, although it's not much of a problem since I usually use it outdoors. Love the ClearBlack display though...

I'm thinking the same thing. People will generally complain about anything...especially when they are Anonymous . They will want the performance of a Porsche on a Ford Fiesta. They will want the beauty and reliability of a Rolex on a Roldex. They want the convienence of a paid app, on a free app.
Anything assembled by man or machine, has its flaws. Light Bleed is one of many complaints that is important to only a hand ful of people here. I'm sure if I go over my phone with a microscope, I will find something to disagree with...Price doesn't matter in the quality of things...from iPhone, to Android to WP, to Blackberry. Each one as something. If you look long enough, and hard enough, you'll find something, anything, even Waldo...
