If the hardware supports it, Why hasn't there been a update, Which someone informed me about before I got the phone saying it will be out soon after the phone is released, and im still waiting
Same here, heard Both SEx10 and HTC desire were going to get updated with new features ie HD recording. (not like im going to get upset or mad if they dont give us desire owners a hd video option, its a bonus if we do get it )
Edit: We should be getting 720p quality vids when we recieve the Froyo update

Yea I seen that, But I was informed on this "feature" just as the phone came out and the features of 2.2 were still not out, And it was slightly a deciding factor on buying the phone (Which was stupid of me) But oh well.
you can record HD using one of the chefs roms
Yes I know but call me stupid I'm still not confident enough to root this damn thing ... Even with the one new root method.

There's already a thread on the topic of camcorder quality & whatnots.
And rooting is easy peasy. Use the guide on nimbu.amorvi.com

Sorry I have no official link or quote because one of the T mobile sales reps told me that the next major update would bring HD recording (just like the Sony Ericsson x10 which will be receiving an update that takes the camera to HD) If this is true then it would definitely be a welcomed addition
Edit: rooting is actually easy once you do it, I havnt finished rooting my phone but was in the process (the step by step vids ate really helpful)
you should try it m8
Well i've considered routing it but i have sent my phone in for repair twice already, and well doing so seems like it would void the warrently after reading a whole load of stuff on it

Apparently not enough stuff. The consensus is that rooting doesn't void your warranty (and there isn't anything in the warranty agreement that hints at it). Furthermore, there hasn't been one reported case of people not having their Desire repaired under warranty, even if obviously rooted, yet. The worst has been getting it back with a note from the engineering saying "Tut tut".
Hmm right... I'll try rooting this by the end of next week. Is win 64 bit a big problem when routing? Read that some people were having issues with 64 windows. Might try routing through ubuntu... Same process right?
I know this is totally off topic but which roms have you guys installed and is apps2sd simple enough to install?

The whole SD partitioning process did my head in, so no clue about A2SD. I just use the default Froyo A2SD.
Running Modaco Custom ROM 2.2, very happy with it (if you can live without the camcorder).
As for rooting and Win64, I haven't encountered any issues using Nimbu's guide (steps 1, 2, 4, 5, using my normal SD card wherever it said goldcard, since I had the 0.75 bootloader).
Hi,
All just got my HTC Desire this morning and eager to go, but not sure how to start.
Can someone let me know in what order I should begin?
My phone is locked to T Mobile and I have 8gb memory card and would like to have gold card, A2SD+ and Froyo 2.2.
Hope I aint sounding too amibitious for a newbie, just want to do things in the right order.
Please asume I a total numbskull (wife does)
Reagrds
I'd wait for UnrEVOked 3.2 to be reposted (it has been removed for a short while to sort out some issues).
If it works for you, you won't need a gold card which makes the whole process much easier.
Regards,
Dave
first thing is just use the phone, get used to it, enjoy it. If you then feel you need to look into custom ROMs then read the posts from the Chefs and see which one is right for you. TBH, stock 2.2 is more than adequate unless you wanna install an obscene amounts of apps

Don't worry about the iPhone4, the desire is better imo. Even if it is unrooted, and the iphoney is jb-ed.At least you can hold your phone and call at the same time ;-).

I also have to agree with EddyOS.
And keep in mind, most applications coming out now including updated applications have the option to be moved to SD.
So Unrevoked 3.2 will root my desire which was updated OTA with stock froyo 2.2? I have unbranded device btw. Software number is 2.09.405.8, and HBOOT is 0.92.0001
me too has chosen the HTC desire for enleghten my contract with T mobile,.its not a tmobile phone but my provider is ,.i started searching some themes last night ,. and found out i need to root ,. and put a new Rom on it like Leedroid or cyanogen rom for applying some stunning Themes ,. so i dig in deeper all day long today founding out there is not 1 program yet except for unrevoked 3.2(wich is taken due some bugs) that would possible root my android 2.2 phone ,.tho i came across many links from this site,. and enjoy the loads of info on here .
OK I am going to sound really stupid now.
In my eagerness to download apps (some do not have the option to send to SD card) I have used the internal memory up.
How do I configure the phone that all apps get moved to the SD as routine?
Yep a totally dumbo I know, you can beat me up later

Yes, you are dumb. Not for downloading too many apps, but because you don't understand that almost every forum has a search function. Even asking the almighty google would have given you the answer without being flamed.
Apps2sd. The app in the marked, not the root-mod. But don't put widgets on sd.

Hello People
I have a HTC Desire ( A8183) & want to root, I dont have the confidence in doing this myself as i dont want to brick my relatively new toy yet.
I live in Perth WA & looking for a techie that can do this for me. i have tried 2 different telephone repair shops & neither could do it, both had the phone for 3 days each. If they cant do it i am not confident at having a go myself.
Does anyone know of a techie that can do this for a reasonable cost.
Thanks in antisipation
Search for unrevoked.com and do of yourself. It's supereasy and has video tutorials. Check also on the stickies
[Sig] dId you know? If you Insert a Coin on your Desire, then it levels up to HD, Z or S :[/Sig] !!!! 10 post limit for off topic NOW!!!!
Read then read again, then read again. Unfortunately in depth information is a bit fragmentated, but general "how to's" are available.
How do you know "techie" won't mess it up? Best to do it yourself, but do your research beforehand. Everyone here was in the same boat as you, but they done it. As long as you are careful, don't rush things, and follow guides chances of messing it up are very slim.
Good place to start.

just use the Noob Proofed Guide, you cant do anything wrong. I was in the same situation like you. I didnt want to brick my phone, but I rooted yesterday evening for the first time without any problems. If you're not confident just take enough time. Plan an evening that you spend with your Desire. Watch all the videos and dont be afraid of all the codes and stuff! It looks much more complex than it realy is!
good luck!

Am i the only one who doesn't like video how to's, but like step by step instructions with or without pics? It's just so much easier to go back a few steps to recheck that you done it right.
I like it if I can do a step while someones making the exact same thing and I can see it live. in tutorials often things arent mentioned 100% clear or arent the same.

HTC Desire rooted.
THANKS AGAIN
1) I rooted my EVO 4G using the following method: "How to Root the HTC EVO 4G with Froyo 2.2 [Video Walkthrough]"
2) I flashed many ROMs, but finally settled on CM7 (7.0.3.1 currently).
3) got excited that the official GB ota was available, so UNROOTED (back to S-ON)using "[GUIDE] How to Unroot the EVO in 2 STEPS"
4)Finally, i installed the OTA today.
MY PROBLEM:
I cant get back to Root & CM!!! there is not much help for this, ive been googling but cant find a method that will root my evo from S-ON/gingerbread (2.3.3)...or even back to Froyo...so that i can root and get back on CM.
DOES ANYONE KNOW HOW TO DO THIS????
i just wanted to play around and see what the officail GB was like (knowing that i would LOSE root, not knowing that i wouldnt be able to GET BACK to root), and now im stuck in STOCK im desperate for all me settings, apps, and WAY OF LIFE with CM.

You cant root. You ****ed up. The new bootloader is locked so root has to be updated to work with it. Everyone said DONT UPDATE.
Sent from my......ummm...let me get back at'chya!
There are a couple of threads on the topic. Basically, with S-On, you are out of luck, and need to wait for a new rooting method. For future reference, no need to unroot to get the OTA upgrade. Either wait the day (3 hours in this case) for a rooted version, or just flash the OTA version. So long as you keep S-Off, you are OK for flashing ROMs and stuff.
Probably gonna be awhile because HTC waited until the gingerbread root methods were patched before releasing the update. Honestly, I'm impressed that they did that. It means they are paying attention to security holes and actually fixing them.
Your best option was to wait it out because rooted versions of the ota were being created. I find that better because you can just flash it to check it out and restore back when your done.

Why do you geniuses keep taking ota's when you are already rooted?????? Seriously every update it is the same thing. Just flash the rooted version of the update. All you had to do was wait a couple of hours for it to be uploaded to xda. Maybe its for he best if the people who made this mistake yet again never be able to root.

Anyway, just wanted to hear from some people who have bricked using alpharev (to see how many have) and if there is any way back after said bricking. I've heard you can't.
That's it, thanx in advance!

This.
Also you should change the thread name which is kinda confusing...
A description of your problem doesn't exist so nobody will be able to help you.
I never heard or read from someone who bricked his phone using alpharev. And if your phone is bricked it would not react anymore (as if it would be dead.
TouchPaled from Oxygen with Transparent XDA App
I'm not asking for help. Just interested in other peoples experience. I'm temped, but cautious as like I said, it's a mistake I cannot afford to rectifiy at the moment. So really all I wouldlike to know is if it had happened to others how they solved it or not.
Sent from my HTC Desire using xda premium
Hboot is the ultimate base for your phone. By using alpharev/revolutionary this gets 'updated'. If there something goes wrong, your phone is completely bricked. And there is absolutely no so solution for this. Your desire is then nothing more than an expensive paperweight.
TouchPaled from Oxygen with Transparent XDA App
However, in order for it to go wrong, the flash itself must go wrong. So a problem anywhere else along the process won't cause these kinds of problems. And because the flash of the bootloader is done by the old bootloader, the only way this can go wrong is, if you pull the battery half way through.
That will cause a serious brick though(you will never even see your screen turn on again) and that you won't recover from.
Thanx for the replys. I fully expected that sort of response about fixing the brick. Oh well. But have you guys heard of this ever happening, apart from the unlikely event of interrupted flash due to battery on laptop or phone being dead. Any stories about "alpharev ate my desire, killed my hamster & broke my toe!"
Just wondering
Sent from my HTC Desire using xda premium
Nope don't think anyone has ever bricked a device doing it my friend
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA App
Please do read my post again...
The way this is done(and the way the bootsystem on those phones work), there is no way other than a bad bootloader flash that will actually brick your phone. And a bad bootloader flash only occurs, as i already told you, if you interrupt it by pulling the battery mid-way(pulling the plug or the computer-battery shouldn't even do it as the flash itself is done entirely by the phone). So no there is NO ONE who used alpharev as intended, who have ended up with a bricked phone.
You might see a few "brick" stories though, which is essentially just bootloops happening to people unaware how their phone work and how to fix such simple problems.
Thanx people, put my mind at ease about doing this.
Sorry, but I'm gonna ask a thick question. You mentioned bootloop and the simple fix. Er... I just take out the battery. Is that the simple fix?
PS would you use the live Linux CD or live USB. My gut tells me to use USB. But I've had a few curries recently and I don't know if I trust it all that much.

I used the live CD and it worked without a hitch.
And bootlooping can't be fixed by removing the battery, because next time you turn it on, you'll bootloop again.
I've had one bootloop with my phone and it was fixed by just reflashing my current ROM, so I'm not too experienced with these things.
Bootloop is not a brick in any means, in fact it's 1 of the easiest things to fix.
Wipe/Factory Reset and reflash.
Thats why i want to kill people which creating threads like "HELP BRICKED MY PHONE !!!1111oneneone" and then inside i see "i'm stuck on htc logo!"
Yeah, a real brick would mean your phone is completely dead and nothing more than an expensive paperweight.

I am also a n00b when it comes to Android. I have decided after using almost 1 year my desire to root and s-off my phone. I always look for the detailed and visual tutorials and if you follow everything step by step it is hardly impossible to brick anything. (I have also flashed my navi, PSP and Wii before) I have used this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1016084and followed the videos and steps. The only thing I have to do now is to apply a custom rom on it.
You'll have no worries if you follow these steps.
