Yes another Newbie sorry - Desire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
All just got my HTC Desire this morning and eager to go, but not sure how to start.
Can someone let me know in what order I should begin?
My phone is locked to T Mobile and I have 8gb memory card and would like to have gold card, A2SD+ and Froyo 2.2.
Hope I aint sounding too amibitious for a newbie, just want to do things in the right order.
Please asume I a total numbskull (wife does)
Reagrds

I'd wait for UnrEVOked 3.2 to be reposted (it has been removed for a short while to sort out some issues).
If it works for you, you won't need a gold card which makes the whole process much easier.
Regards,
Dave

first thing is just use the phone, get used to it, enjoy it. If you then feel you need to look into custom ROMs then read the posts from the Chefs and see which one is right for you. TBH, stock 2.2 is more than adequate unless you wanna install an obscene amounts of apps

True that, just enjoy the phone! Right now you havnt really got a reason for upgrading, unless you really want 720p.. 2.1 is just as fast, just dont mess with the phone too kuch for now.. do you have an amoled or an slcd version?!

Don't worry about the iPhone4, the desire is better imo. Even if it is unrooted, and the iphoney is jb-ed.At least you can hold your phone and call at the same time ;-).

I also have to agree with EddyOS.
And keep in mind, most applications coming out now including updated applications have the option to be moved to SD.

So Unrevoked 3.2 will root my desire which was updated OTA with stock froyo 2.2? I have unbranded device btw. Software number is 2.09.405.8, and HBOOT is 0.92.0001

me too has chosen the HTC desire for enleghten my contract with T mobile,.its not a tmobile phone but my provider is ,.i started searching some themes last night ,. and found out i need to root ,. and put a new Rom on it like Leedroid or cyanogen rom for applying some stunning Themes ,. so i dig in deeper all day long today founding out there is not 1 program yet except for unrevoked 3.2(wich is taken due some bugs) that would possible root my android 2.2 phone ,.tho i came across many links from this site,. and enjoy the loads of info on here .

OK I am going to sound really stupid now.
In my eagerness to download apps (some do not have the option to send to SD card) I have used the internal memory up.
How do I configure the phone that all apps get moved to the SD as routine?
Yep a totally dumbo I know, you can beat me up later

Yes, you are dumb. Not for downloading too many apps, but because you don't understand that almost every forum has a search function. Even asking the almighty google would have given you the answer without being flamed.
Apps2sd. The app in the marked, not the root-mod. But don't put widgets on sd.

Why to root my Desire

Hi all,
sorry for my bad english iam a german user.
I have an Magic and a Desire, my Magic is rooted because the original Rom is stupid and slow....
Why should i root my Desire. I Like the original rom, its fast, very good functions (like sense, htc tether, and the other htc features)....
i dont know if there a desire rom that has all the same functions include root....
Thanks for your help..
Erm...then don't root it.
he's asking if by Rooting it he loses the HTC functions
Why shouldn't you root?
You can have the same exact ROM as the stock, but with root. Check the rooting procedure from modaco.
By rooting, you'd lose nothing. If I had a Desire, I'd surely root it even if I decided I wanted to keep the stock ROM. There's little to no risk, so no reason to hold back

He's basically said he loves the features, he's happy with it and everything is working fine...so I'm saying, use it and leave it.
Why root if there's no specific reason to do so apart from "you can"?!
It's like the thread that's just popped up asking if SetCPU is working yet...why? Is the CPU too slow as it is? Just because you can doesn't mean you should for no good reason other than you're bored.
the good reason to root the phone is to get apps2sd which currently isnt working too well for some people,
however, apparently google with the 2.2 software which will be out soon will bring the apps to sd functionality, so i will wait till then as so far dont see the point of doing so

yep the rooted rom is exactly the same except root access and the super user app, would translate this but i know it wouldn't make much sense due to german sentence structure etc.

Do you want it to do something it doesn't already do? If not, leave it alone.
On a more personal note, I'd hold off rooting for a couple of months at least. Let all the guys at the bleeding edge get hurt and bloodied by the rooting process. Then once things have settled down and the initial niggles are resolved, see what benefits it brings. The phone is very new after all. Surely you can't be bored of it yet?
SIM Free Deal
I'm thinking of getting a Desire SIM free - will this come with bootloader unlocked and engineering SPL as standard do you think?

The only advantage in getting a sim free version is you can use any sim card with it. That's it. No special bootloader and stuff.

What kind of advice is this? Seriously? Yes, you should do things because you can. You should learn and explore, become educated about the world around you. There's enough bigotry, ignorance, and lethargic mind states out there without telling others to hold back. This very technology was founded on forward thinking and sharing of community knowledge. As a counter to your statement why should I -NOT- root my device other than "because I can"?
What I want to know, and I believe op does as well, is what are the advantages of rooting? Are there any? Most of what I've looked up is fairly old (1+ years) and the biggest boon I've seen people talk about is being able to tether, this is something I can already do with my HTC Desire. I see plenty of answers for the second half of my question, what are the disadvantages, and there seems to be a hearty agreement that there really isn't one.
So what would I stand to gain from rooting?

You can gain much.....
One of the reasons I rooted mine is so that I can control the CPU speed using SetCPU and improve my battery life.
You can install firewall apps to control iptables and keep your phone a little bit safer from the "perils" of internet.
I have also installed a cache removal and a move2sd app to help save a bit more space in the internal memory.
And, obviously, you can flash custom ROMs and extend functionalities (I haven't done this....yet)
All of which are possible through rooting.

I cannot see a reason to root a phone if you want to keep the original ROM. Mine is rooted but I cannot do anything that I couldn't do before on the original rom.

HD Video Recording?

If the hardware supports it, Why hasn't there been a update, Which someone informed me about before I got the phone saying it will be out soon after the phone is released, and im still waiting
Same here, heard Both SEx10 and HTC desire were going to get updated with new features ie HD recording. (not like im going to get upset or mad if they dont give us desire owners a hd video option, its a bonus if we do get it )
Edit: We should be getting 720p quality vids when we recieve the Froyo update

Yea I seen that, But I was informed on this "feature" just as the phone came out and the features of 2.2 were still not out, And it was slightly a deciding factor on buying the phone (Which was stupid of me) But oh well.
you can record HD using one of the chefs roms
Yes I know but call me stupid I'm still not confident enough to root this damn thing ... Even with the one new root method.

Sorry I have no official link or quote because one of the T mobile sales reps told me that the next major update would bring HD recording (just like the Sony Ericsson x10 which will be receiving an update that takes the camera to HD) If this is true then it would definitely be a welcomed addition
Edit: rooting is actually easy once you do it, I havnt finished rooting my phone but was in the process (the step by step vids ate really helpful)
you should try it m8
Well i've considered routing it but i have sent my phone in for repair twice already, and well doing so seems like it would void the warrently after reading a whole load of stuff on it

Apparently not enough stuff. The consensus is that rooting doesn't void your warranty (and there isn't anything in the warranty agreement that hints at it). Furthermore, there hasn't been one reported case of people not having their Desire repaired under warranty, even if obviously rooted, yet. The worst has been getting it back with a note from the engineering saying "Tut tut".
Hmm right... I'll try rooting this by the end of next week. Is win 64 bit a big problem when routing? Read that some people were having issues with 64 windows. Might try routing through ubuntu... Same process right?
I know this is totally off topic but which roms have you guys installed and is apps2sd simple enough to install?

The whole SD partitioning process did my head in, so no clue about A2SD. I just use the default Froyo A2SD.
Running Modaco Custom ROM 2.2, very happy with it (if you can live without the camcorder).
As for rooting and Win64, I haven't encountered any issues using Nimbu's guide (steps 1, 2, 4, 5, using my normal SD card wherever it said goldcard, since I had the 0.75 bootloader).

I've only been and gone and rooted it!

Phew that was nerve wrecking
But successful
Thanks to the wonderful guides here and supporting posts by the community, it was pretty painless. Now its just a matter of finding which ROM I'd like to stick with for the time being. I just couldn't wait any longer to play with Froyo, and I like the roughness of the N1 version but for now I've gone back to the Mocado Sense ROM until all the issues have really been ironed out with the custom Froyo ROMs. I have both images on the SD and it takes about 2 mins from boot to switch now, I'm impressed that I can back up and recover so easily.
I'm soo impressed actually, you guys are fantastic.
I guess really this is just an ass licking thread in the end
that would be ass kissing. Ass licking is not quite the compliment.
Nice one. It's a great feeling when you root successfully first time isn't it
You get a great sense of satisfaction.
If you like 2.1 roms over froyo at the minute, you should try one of pays roms in the dev section. They are a few pages down now as he hasn't kept the thread updated because he had to send his phone to HTC for repair (not rom related) lol.
His roms are very good, and a lot of people including me really like them. I'm on a froyo rom now though because I can't stop changing. lol.

@socktug, okay I'll look at those.. I do like the inclusion of Wavesecure in the Modaco ROM but now its rooted I'm sure I'll look around before I settle. No point getting too cosy cos in a month or two an official sense Froyo will come and I'll have to flash that anyway.
(edit) I mean a custom version of the Sense Froyo of course

seriously though, we are indeed fortunate to have such a talented and generous membership at XDA. things will get even better once Desire is sold in the US and more even people get on board.
I think ass licking would leave more of a bitter taste in your mouth and i imagine the texture would be something similar to Nutella.
+1 for the idea of ass kissing as opposed to ass licking (and no, i am not gay if that is what you were thinking!)

Wow pretty much same here! I rooted for the first time yesterday, but didn't go over as straight forward as I would've hoped. First I tried the Linux method which didn't work - apparently I need a goldcard even though my phone's unlocked and unbranded. Then it took forever to get the ADB interface to recognize the phone - major problems with Win7 x64 at first. Finally got that right though (after several hours). From then on it was quite smooth.
I installed PaY's BraveSoul ROM and quite love it
I want to try out FroYo, but there's one thing stopping me. It's kind of a small thing, but maybe one of you can shed some light? Here goes:
So, I like Sense. Quite a bit. But I'm willing to go to vanilla Android if there is a way to keep my contact information built up properly. i.e. right now, my contacts are merged with Facebook/Sense which gives birthdays, profile pictures, email addresses etc. all under one unified contact - will I lose that if I go to FroYo? Is there a way to make all those details static so they can be carried forward to a non-Sense ROM?
Hope this isn't extremely off-topic!
Yeah, you do sacrifice a lot of useful functionality moving away from Sense to a froyo rom, including the way it mingles all of your contacts together. It's a personal preference really but I prefer the mail app, HTC browser and photos app in Sense to Android 2.2, the mail app is actually far superior as you can use contacts from any of your accounts and the corporate address book when you cmopose a new message.
Not wanting to start rom wars here but I think Pays roms are the best - they include a lot of nice features like automatic ad blocking, I've tried pretty much everything on this board and I always end up going back.
As for rooting, it is necessary when HTC have given us such a pathetic amount of phone storage, I ran out after a week and only had about 20 apps installed. Rooting was necessary so that I could install apps to the sd card and use my phone without having to constantly do housekeeping in my market downloads.
Hey carrige, I just rooted 2 days ago, and I can say that I am seeing a lot of difference in speed and quality, compared to the stock ROM. Yeah I too miss the HTC contacts widget, since it used to sync every contact detail together, and liked a lot how the images on facebook were ported to my phone contacts. However I found something similiar to that, it only ports the photos though, and not the info.
As regards to ROMS, I only tried DeFrost and Mondaco's and I can tell you they are pretty amazing!

Not at all, I dont do off topic.
3 things:
1- The ability to perform a FULL backup to SD that can be reinstated in about 2-3 mins on a good day.
2- Being able to do small customisations like using the rotary lockscreen or the circular battery icon (which trust me is effing kool!).
3- I've had a go on Froyo (gone back to 2.1 for the time being for stability) and in 6 months I'm sure I'll get a go on Gingerbread.
4- A2SD+ means I will never run out of space, not only this I can further customise the ROM with ADB and remove **** I really dont need like 'stocks', 'peep' & 'Friendstream' (I ****ing hate twitter with a passion).
5- You can stick 5 up your arse.
Since rooting my phone has felt complete (even tho I've flashed it about 100 times in the past 23 hours), stable.. more unique, solid, cool, better.
I remember when I had my PSP and I butchered my only battery to make a pandora and got the m33 custom firmware on it. This is the same thing.
It makes the boundries clearer about who the device belongs to.. I'll give you a clue... it's MINE.

Hmmm ... so let me summarize:
[BACKGROUD: I had a G1 and flashed it countless times, I know how the game goes]
1. why would you need that on a rock solid device? Backups areonly needed if you feel unsecure, if you flash it over and over again, so you can go back if something goes wrong.
2. OK, I get it, but this one is soooo small, it's not worth counting. Not worth the risk (don't tell me it's risk free because it NEVER is)
3. so you don't even get the benefits of Froyo but you (maybe) lose Sense. I for one love Sense.
4. OK, that is ONE. (I already stated thiswould bea reason).
So, bottom line, you are saying CUSTOMIZATION. Hmmm, not worth the risk IMHO.
P.S. I'm not trying to play smart, I'm doing this for the sake of arguments / counterarguments.
P.P.S. If you feel we are going off-topic here please say and I will start a new thread.
There's no such things as offtopic on an oursoul thread okay.
1- True say, cos obviously if you've rooted you're gonna try some crazy **** sometimes, its just good to know that with the Recovery patched you will never completely **** it up. And the backup just means that when you've made that perfect setup you can freeze it in case you have to replace your handset or unroot for any reason. Means you can Test a new ROM and if you dont like you can recover in minutes to your happyROM.
2- Come on mate, its ****ing cool.. I hate the Sense lockscreen, its bollocks.. I like the rotary one personally .. round and round hehe. This point was more than that, its about pure customisation.
4- Yeah you mentioned that but I added the fact that you can also delete **** you dont need, very good imo.
3- I said test Froyo, I'm not interested in keeping it cos I love sense too.. I might have kept Froyo if the N1 camera app wasn't so shoddy. I already miss my c905 camera quality. I love how on the MoDaCo rom you can move the homescreens about in 'helicopter' view
PS dont worry about it bruv, you're safe with me..
It really isn't that hard to root as long as you follow the instructions on the top of the Dev page here.
I had to have my goldcard in to root, but it was easy.. then applying the UnrEVOked Recovery patch was just the icing on the cake.

Yeah, yeah, I know. Still, I don't feel like going through the "pain" if my phone performs SO well. The G1 was a completely different story, it needed to be rooted to make it a true Android phone. When I got my Desire I was (and still am!) blown away by the speed and all those things it could do right out of the box. I don't know, maybe I'm just getting old, but at some point I'm wondering if I'm actually using the phone or just trying to make it do things.

Oh NO, it's not! Mine is better for a lot of reasons! Want one? BECAUSE IT'S SITTING RIGHT NEXT TO ME.
BACK ON TOPIC (beware, I changed the topic now):
You still haven't convinced me. Anybody else would like to take a shot here?!
P.S. I'm surprised Market Enabler didn't show up as a reason to root. Maybe you are all Brits or whatever but for a lot of us Market only offers free stuff. But I decided it's not a reason to root since I can find everything I need on the "dark side". Sorry developers, I know it's not your fault but it's not mine either. If Google enables payed apps for Romania I will start buying again. Until then I'm a pirate!
I've got to admit, as someone that constantly flashed roms to my HTC Magic, I was very happy on the stock desire rom aside from the running out of storage issue. HTC did a good job. If the phone had enough storage I would still be running the stock rom now. I don't see any real reason to root other than the lack of phone storage. Froyo roms still don't work properly anyway - for me they ALL have an echo on the line. I would stay with stock if you are happy, don't crumble under the peer pressure!!

I have 4gb free on my SD card but running out of memory. How to move stuff to SD?

Hey all,
I have loads of space on my SD card but an already finding out that I'm running out of phone memory. I don't think I have that many apps installed but can't seen to move a lot of them to the SD card.
How can I do this or make more space no the phone?
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA Premium App
Can only be done with a custom ROM using A2SD+
Wow. I'm a little new to Android, but that seems like a big oversight by Google, or is this a restriction imposed by HTC?
not really HTC. up to app developers to update their apps to allow apps2sd. even then not all of the app will be moved.
tbh wanting to install more apps is the main reason many of us root in the first place. that and many other goodies too!
custom rom with at least A2SD+ is the way to go!

I have been holding out for as long as possible as the phone is a works unit, but not only that, its from Orange. As there is no Orange ROM for the Desire available, I have no real way of going back to a near stock condition in case the phone need to be returned.
However, I didn't realise that even something like this would be a limitation of the stock ROM

I woudl say not fully true.
There is a bunch of alternatives to A2SD like data2ext or data2sd
StarBurst ROM is even including DATA2SD With up to 2GB of storage!
(see my sig for link)

yes quite annoying. i take back a little bit what i said before about htc, sort of their fault too for providing minimal app storage space.
when u say from orange i take it u mean orange branded right? not an expert, but i thought there would be an orange rom out there if they pushed out an update. mayb search around a bit more?
took me a while before i decided to take the plunge and root. read loads of these pages before i had the guts. never looked back since though! only way to fully unleash the phone's true potential!

Yep, Orange Branded. I have swapped over ROMs on a previous Windows phone, but that was a personal phone. Apparently ther isn't an Orange ROM release as it has never been leaked. I must say that I have read then several times now and have yet to see anything to the contrary after a couple of months of looking. Of course, I would be happy the be wrong here.

hmm, that is annoying if it is true, would have thought someone would have leaked it somewhere! slightly annoying combo of branded and work phone too...
i take it you only want the rom as a 'just in case'? i found it v scary at first but there r so many ppl and forums to deal with virtually every problem. the chances of bricking it r small if u follow instructions. if you've been looking for a couple of months then by the sounds of it u would like to go thru with this, and i bet u've probably memorised how to do the steps in your head by now.
to be fair i thought i bricked my phone after trying to flash my first rom. scared the crap out of me. but that turned out to be a bad sd card, nothing wrong with my method as i was following the steps exactly. i did use the RUU to start again so it did come in handy...
Space to me is always and issue
Root to increase space..and of course to miui...I just upgraded from a 16gb to a 32gb. Be warned..once you root and start installing Rome you may get addicted.

[Q] old man old phone old roms? help Please!

ok Hi everyone!
no i do not have ADO (Attention deficit order) or any other brain dissorder! just old slow and feeble!
i got the HTC EVO 4G my two year contract with the sprint WOGS is up about two months ago my phone died and best buy got me a brand new one!
then i see that new samsung galaxy note 2 and ooooowww
So my old brain kicks in and says mod your evo
ok at this point
so i rooted mt evo 4g with HTCDEV and revolutionary some how i ended up installing revolutionary but the phone still works
but yes i did not do a backup of the original system on the phone!!
well i am now thinking since i am rooted and s-off abot a custom ROM??
ok this is were the old man comes in
i only wish do do this once and most of you all here it seems do this every day as a type of hobby
what i would like to find in a custom ROM is everthing to work as the phone works now but hopefully even better
and to get rid of all this BS poopwear sprint has loaded into this phone
a ROM that looks great and new and as stable as stock?? with maybe some new apps to play with
So the Question is? Is there a ROM out here filled with the above???
Question 2
when you root a phone and s-off then do a custom rom, does sprint know what you have done or can they find out
and if so can they mess with you or bug you??
no i do not see men in black everywere!
just have seen post about watermarks and sprint knows! just was hoping to get the truth here!
I will start with your second question. The only way Sprint will know is if you have to take it on for service. So no worries there.
As far as a ROM goes there are many solid, stable, fully working roms. You will be limited to the older gingerbread roms. All the newer ones lack drivers for front camera and Wimax (4g). Now to find what you want will take searching on your part. There are a few different versions of sense which is HTC's launcher and then you have AOSP which looks completely different. When I get on a computer I will give you some links to check out.

Since you have been using the EVO for a few years and are used the the Sense UI I would recommed
starting out with The Classic. A very solid ROM by tommytomatoe. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1312414
So many out there, all great, most of devs remove all the crap when we buid the roms guess it comes down to what you like.
You like stock, or themes,
Sent from my PC36100 using Tapatalk 2
The first two you listed will work 100% but the last one is a jelly bean ROM that has no front camera or 4G. Plus other minor issues. The classic would be like your stock ROM only way better.

Sorry if i sound like a dumb ass
i have gone to alot of web sites trying to dig all the info in can from the words i can make sence from!
i am not here to beat no one up or down!! i had asked help from one site when i went to root my phone
and was kind of kick for being a noob and asking a question the guy thought everyone should have known!
that is why i am here! i am sure you all have looked at other web sites about all this rooting around and roms.
what you all do in customizing the cell phones is ??? really i do not have a better word GREAT!! (each generation has there own words and phrases, and sometimes we have to teach the old people like are parents the new stuff that has come out)
i would say this i am like all of you! but way older i think and definitely not any way near as smart as you all are here
as to stock or theme? i take it theme is the way the new rom will look??
i will say this as the way for the last 2 years looking at my phone well im borrrred with it
if it had a big pair of breast attached to it well i would not be here "SORRY LADIES!!!"
so yes new looking and way better to play with! STOCK ? no i had that
stable is my concerne with a new rom as once i do the flash (flahing the rom) to the phone i do not want to have to worry about this software to fix this bug or that bug then digging up this file to get this or that to work!
does this make any sence to you all??
ok an old man would think (sorry if im wrong here!!) if one was to install a new rom on ????phone all that would be needed
would be one file! do the vol. and power button go to revolutionary install zip file from sd card wait and poof your done!!
ya ya what joint is that old fart smoking!!!
AGAIN THANKS FOR ALL YOUR HELP HERE
Classic.
Maybe Synergy if you don't care about CIQ.
I ran AlterROM for awhile: it might be in your comfort zone and it provides a ton of installation options if you want to explore a little.
But really just start with Classic. The "updater" app included with Classic may need some kind of fix , read the last few pages of that thread to get current.
Have fun!

Ok i will jump in here and do the ROM] The Classic v0.1.0 - finale
and i will download the ]TN_Elousions_3_Rooted_latest_OTA_5.07.651.6_supers onic_Deoxed_2/19/1
and try that one later
so my dumb old man question is now
1 do the vol down and power
since i have revolutionary installed i go to recovery then the revolutionary screen pops up and from that i chose install zip file from sd card
and that is it?? or do i do the same for both files this one v0.1.0p3 Supermagic Finale and this one classic.cx entry
from this web page http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1312414
or is this more over my head
The Tn elousions 3 is stock I have not done anything with that yet other then deoxing it.
My elousions 2.2.2 is the trixed out one. Just to let you no.
Don't forget to wipe dalvic and dalvic cache
Better yet wipe everything except SD card.
Make a nandroid backup before you do anthing.

HTC EVO 4G yup the old phone
well i did the classic rom
the first time i flashed it and it all loaded up anything to do with the internet would not work
thought maybe i got a bad download from this crappy satellite hughes.net system we are on
so i redownloaded it again and wee hee it all works!!!
just wished the bottom screen buttons had some kind of lay out like the evo 4g did
phone, apps, etc.
i will run this and see what happens i hope no bugs pop up
ya and you are right there is alot of do-hickies added to this!
i just hope i do not mess something up now
if he had put in the butttons for the phone, apps, etc
from my stand point this rom would be the greatist
but it is my first rom i have flashed so who knows maybe there is one that is better out there!!!
I would like too THANK YOU ALL!!! Very much for your GREAT WORK HERE!! and your help with me on this venture!!!
THANKS ALLOT!!
Bill
Haha actually I agree with you, I was never a fan of what Tommy called the "Ghost Rosie". Ironically it's one of the things that really distinguishes the ROM and it took a lot of work for him to make it do that.
Anyway I'm pretty sure you can "turn off" that feature and bring back a always-visible phone button, either by a tweak (changing a setting that Tommy provided in some control panel somewhere) or via a mod (some flashable zip that modifies that Rosie).
Or you can always download a custom launcher from the market.

The jelly bean roms are not filled with bloat ware, they come with the apps needed for a root user to do the right things. Plus they are pretty stable at this point, just minor things that don't work, except it would be nice if we could get 4G Wimax back on the latest roms. Front facing camera just needs a driver as well as Wimax, but I do not miss those things as I am connected to wifi mostly.
