[Q] Install CWM on custom ROM? - Xperia Play Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'm in a bit of a pickle with my Xperia PLAY.
It's bootloader is locked, but I managed to install the root app then used the auto-CWM app to get me the CWM Recovery menu and from there I installed the GBTweaked ROM.
Thing is: it seems that the ROM has erased my CWM, so now I can't get into the Recovery menu to install the wifi fixes.
Tried the auto-CWM app again (tried everything else) and it won't take. On every boot there's no CWM and the app says CWM is not installed. Tried the CWM script (that's often mentioned) with the ADB drivers, but it can't detect my PLAY.
I'm stuck!
No CWM = no wifi fix, and with no CWM I can't even resort back to the stock ROM!
Any ideas folks? I've been trying this for about 4hrs this evening...

Actually you can get back to stock without CWM. All you need is to download flashtool and find the proper ftf file for your phone model. Take a look in the development forum threads.

r800x CWM problems

Hey guys,
I am new to the Xperia Play and am having trouble with installing CWM on it. It is the r800x model (CDMA, Verizon) and I have a locked bootloader.
I first rooted the phone using the ZergRush method with SuperOneClick (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1312859) and used the phone on the stock ROM a little bit. I did some research on the phone and decided I wanted to flash a ROM, so I went on to the next step to put CWM on the phone. I then searched around the forum awhile and found a method to install CWM through an autoinstaller app on the Market (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1437840).
The autoinstaller worked and I made a nandroid backup of the phone and then proceeded to flash the GBtweaked rom (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1416470). I wiped data and cleared cache and dalvik and went through all the proper steps to ensure it was a clean install and everything worked fine. Then when I tried to flash the Wifi modules for the ROM the phone would not boot to the recovery that I had installed. I tried doing it when you boot up the phone and press a hardware key repeatedly and I also tried to boot the recovery through the app, but it would just reboot my phone normally. I looked through the forums and could not find the answers I needed so I decided to use flashtool to bring my phone back to its original stock ROM.
I rerooted the phone using SuperOneClick again and downloaded the same app that installs the recovery and while the app says the recovery is installed when I use the app to try and boot into the recovery it does not work and just reboots my phone, and when I try to boot into recovery by tapping a hardware button repeatedly at bootup I cannot get into it either. Can anybody help me figure out whats wrong and also help me get the recovery back on the phone??
Tap the Volume Down rocker on the device

i mut have searched for hours trying to figure out what was wrong when there was nothing wrong at all
okay well that worked until I flashed the GBtweaked ROM again and now I cant reboot into the recovery to flash the wifi modules I need which was my problem that I started with....

That's because when you flash the GBTweaked ROM, it formats /system, which is where CWM is installed. Download it from the market via 3G or whatever and reinstall it. You should be good after that.
Next time, flash the ROM and wifi modules before you reboot if possible. That's why I have to do with some of the ROMS I use.
I just got my r800x and followed this guide: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1439474 and I can't boot into CWM. I'm installing it via Xparts but I can't boot into CWM. I'm pressing volume down, and it just boots. Help?

Did you really install CWM from Xparts? I just used it and I don't have a problem with it. On the app itself did you go to "INSTALLS" and click on the Install CWM button? Once CWM is installed boot your device powered down. Then press the power again as it boots up keep pressing the volume d rocker down and you would get yourself into recovery easily.
same issue

Yeah, I'm having the same issue. Tried holding vol down while rebooting through XParts, just boots normally. Tried powering off then powering up manually and holding vol down, just boots normally. XParts said successful install of 5.0.2.7. R800X on 2.3.3 stock.
I used that before getting mine unlocked. I always had to move the files manually & fix permissions in order to get it to stick, I haven't used new app tho.

Running AOKP milestone6 4.0.4
To get into CWM you cant just simply hold volume down. You have to keep pressing it over and over at the Sony screen till it goes in.
Edit: Ok so I ran into this issue today while flashing some stuff. X-Parts does not seem to be loading CWM properly or something as I could not get into recovery at all. So I went looking for the original method and all fixed now. Link below.

Booting Into Recovery

Right, I've got an Xperia Arc Lt15i. Its rooted but got a locked bootloader. Its running 2.3.4, a custom rom (think it's Aniking) and I haven't done anything to the kernel. I put clockwork mod on it a few months ago so i could get the custom rom. Now I want to go back into recovery mode, go back to the stock rom, through a nandroid backup, and update to the official ICS, since it only just came out for my phone. I am now unable to boot into recovery, having tried spamming the volume down or back buttons as well as using apps that say they'll reboot into recovery. Nothing works, the phone always boots normally. I'm sure clockworkmod is on there, i never took it off and have tried installing it again with x-parts to make sure. I clicked the Nandroid Backup option in X-parts - it managed to boot into recovery but went straight into doing the backup and then immediately rebooted. I'm not too good with doing it all on the PC so haven't tried or understood any of that.
Also, a question that might be easier: is it possible to just update to the official sony ICS with that PC companion program from a custom gingerbread rom or do I need a stock rom.
Any help greatly appreciated. Thanks

you can just flash ICS from a custom gb rom since it doesnt require an unlocked bootloader, but yeh you can use PCC
since your on stock kernel and have flashed a rom i think it resets it to not having CWM (on stock only i think) just re-install CWM on your arc and it should fix everything
Just install the Recovery again. By default, it is installed in system folder, where the whole ROM is and usually is formatted before flashing.

since your bootloader is still unlock, just use pc companion and update your device from there you'll have ICS on stock

I have the same problem.
I installed CWM recovery on my rooted arc with locked BL using x-Parts and successfully used it to install a ROM. I was going to try flashing some mods but I cannot get back into the recovery even after re-installing it with x-Parts v5 and v7, the phone always boots normally.
Try and boot into recovery using cwm app after reinstall.

As I said, I've installed more than one version of the app again and neither worked

How should I do it?

Edit: Wrong section, can anyone move it to Q&A?
Hello everyone, I'm relatively new to this kind of stuff but I need help. Recently with CWM I installed ROM "icebean". I installed it successfully but since I had to wipe everything I also lost CWM, I need this to reinstall Google Now and if I may want to switch to other ROMS. The only problem is that I can't get CWM because I have a locked bootloader and I used something called recoverX to install it. Apparently I need the stock ROM to install it but I'm using icebean, so what do I do? I cannot unlock my bootloader because it says "not allowed". Is there a work around this? Also one more thing, the Google Now file is a flashable zip, so does this mean I can use flash tool to install it? Thanks.
You don't need bootloader unlocked for cwm install, you install like Normal app.
Look in theme/app thread for post by pvyparts suggest you use v5 not Latest xparts.
once installed open app and then install cwm in to system.
Once this is installed you get into recovery by powering down phone then restart it but start pushing the back key When you see the Sony logo this will take you to the recovery where you can then install all types of mods etc but they must be flashable zips.
If not then cwm will give you an error.
This requires root which I assume you have as you installed custom Rom.

Hi, thanks for responding quickly. I did what you said and downloaded x parts v5, I managed to download CWM but the only problem is that I cannot access it. I tried you method and the method I had to do before which was repeatedly press the volume down button, I also tried x parts' method by using their boot to recovery. Before when I installed recoverX I tried using x parts which did not work like now. I would use recoverX but I'm unsure about it, it says to use a stock ROM which I don't have anymore. One thing if it might be useful is that when I flashed the ROM my phone changed from lt15i to lt18i, could this have interfere with anything?

[Q] Phone went does not boot up after rebooting

Xperia Arc LT15i, last installed was FXP150 - CyanogenMod 10 Android 4.1.2
- which I was using for almost 2 weeks without any reboots or crashes nor any setting tweaks.
Yes, I have tried checking through a lot of searches and googling, haven't found any solution so far.
I had initially rebooted my phone to recovery using the option within the OS. It went on and loaded CWM, there I just looked around the menu, and clicked "reboot system now". After that the phone started booting, but after the FreeXperia screen, just displays a blank screen and gets stuck there. I re-entered CWM, and tried rebooting, still won't boot the regular OS. I tried re-installing FXP from sd-card (the same one that I had installed 2 weeks back) but now it won't install that release either. I tried toggling signature and re-installing, it still doesn't install.
I tried connecting the phone as mass storage through CWM, but my laptop won't detect it. The adb drivers don't work despite being installed correctly. Fastboot is the only thing that seems to detect my phone. But I cannot install new ROM using fastboot.
Please help.
Switch off your phone (if you can't try battery pull)
Use flash tools and install stock firmware and follow onscreen instructions
(Search and download ics stock firmware
Connect phone in flash mode by pressing back button and connecting)

Is there no way to make it work on FXP from this point itself ?
I was kinda hoping I could get it to run FXP directly....
If you can access Cwm get a complete back up and then after installing stock after installing Cwm you can restore...
But the best way is to flash stock and install fresh to avoid problems

yes, will do that ofcourse. But was wondering if there was any way to get it to work as it is.
CWM is already working, and the sd-card already contains the package too.....

Flash another kernel and another ROM.
Make sure they are compatible.
Which kernel and ROM are you trying to use?
You must not use SEUS if your bootloader is unlocked. You might brick your device.
Try using flashtool. Get into fastboot mode and flash custom kernel like LuPuS which already has CWM recovery. And then you can fash custom rom you want using Install ZIP from sdcard option in CWM.

Also, tryed with voice_down button but still - no luck.

Try reinstall CWM, or try other recovery

Try pressing back key instead of volume down. This will work.
Cheers!!

since you unlocked your bootloader you can just flash a custom kernel which will have root/recovery
