Booting Into Recovery - Xperia Arc Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Right, I've got an Xperia Arc Lt15i. Its rooted but got a locked bootloader. Its running 2.3.4, a custom rom (think it's Aniking) and I haven't done anything to the kernel. I put clockwork mod on it a few months ago so i could get the custom rom. Now I want to go back into recovery mode, go back to the stock rom, through a nandroid backup, and update to the official ICS, since it only just came out for my phone. I am now unable to boot into recovery, having tried spamming the volume down or back buttons as well as using apps that say they'll reboot into recovery. Nothing works, the phone always boots normally. I'm sure clockworkmod is on there, i never took it off and have tried installing it again with x-parts to make sure. I clicked the Nandroid Backup option in X-parts - it managed to boot into recovery but went straight into doing the backup and then immediately rebooted. I'm not too good with doing it all on the PC so haven't tried or understood any of that.
Also, a question that might be easier: is it possible to just update to the official sony ICS with that PC companion program from a custom gingerbread rom or do I need a stock rom.
Any help greatly appreciated. Thanks

you can just flash ICS from a custom gb rom since it doesnt require an unlocked bootloader, but yeh you can use PCC
since your on stock kernel and have flashed a rom i think it resets it to not having CWM (on stock only i think) just re-install CWM on your arc and it should fix everything

Just install the Recovery again. By default, it is installed in system folder, where the whole ROM is and usually is formatted before flashing.

since your bootloader is still unlock, just use pc companion and update your device from there you'll have ICS on stock

Not by default only due to unlockable boot loaders is it put there.
I agree tho try to reinstal recovery.

I have the same problem.
I installed CWM recovery on my rooted arc with locked BL using x-Parts and successfully used it to install a ROM. I was going to try flashing some mods but I cannot get back into the recovery even after re-installing it with x-Parts v5 and v7, the phone always boots normally.

Try and boot into recovery using cwm app after reinstall.

As I said, I've installed more than one version of the app again and neither worked

[Q] Install CWM on custom ROM?

I'm in a bit of a pickle with my Xperia PLAY.
It's bootloader is locked, but I managed to install the root app then used the auto-CWM app to get me the CWM Recovery menu and from there I installed the GBTweaked ROM.
Thing is: it seems that the ROM has erased my CWM, so now I can't get into the Recovery menu to install the wifi fixes.
Tried the auto-CWM app again (tried everything else) and it won't take. On every boot there's no CWM and the app says CWM is not installed. Tried the CWM script (that's often mentioned) with the ADB drivers, but it can't detect my PLAY.
I'm stuck!
No CWM = no wifi fix, and with no CWM I can't even resort back to the stock ROM!
Any ideas folks? I've been trying this for about 4hrs this evening...

Actually you can get back to stock without CWM. All you need is to download flashtool and find the proper ftf file for your phone model. Take a look in the development forum threads.

R800x won't boot to recovery

I have rooted an R800x, Xperia Play. Using flash tool. I had to downgrade from 2.3.4 to 2.3.3 and I want to flash a new rom. I can't flash a rom because I can't install CWM. I used X-Parts to install CWM but when I reboot the phone to recovery using X-Parts, it doesn't boot to CWM. I have tried to manually reboot to CWM using the [back] button, pushing it repeatedly but I still couldn't boot it to recovery. Can you please help me.

What it x-parts? I've never heard of it, and honestly it didnt seem to install anything on your phone.. Use this tool here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1774131
I bet it was some app from the play store right?
I too am having the same problems with my r800i, but I ftf the 2.3.3. file just to get the thing out of boot loop. I am now downloading the 4.0.4. ftf file and hopefully get that installed.

You need a custom kernel to flash a custom rom, use fastboot.

That solved the problem. I didn't flash a new kernel. I have CWM running and already flashing a new ROM, thanks for reminding me about installing the kernel.

Xperia S wont boot or anything

Hi.
Today I received my Xperia S and immediately started rooting it. First i unlocked my bootloader succesfully with help of sonys official tutorial.
Then I rooted my stock ICS 2.45 firmware succesfully with root witch restore binaries thingy. Then I started installing CWM and used ten thousand different tuts and finally succeeded to boot to CWM based recovery v5,5,0.4 with help of THIS TUT
Now it booted to that recovery and then tried to flash FXP205-cm-10-201-302-01-UNOFFICIAL-anzu.zip that with it from internal sd. It did say something about status 7 installation aborted. There were tutorial that said that download FXP205-cm-10-201-302-01-UNOFFICIAL-nozomi.zip but i thought that anzu.zip was newest. Was that a mistake and is there any hope that my xperia s will work ever again?:crying:
Maybe stupid, but didyou fully charged?
LB or UB?
Tried again step by step, maybe u missed something?
FlasTool is ur friend!

It's sad but there might be no hope for your Phone since nozomi is the codename for Xperia S and anzu i totalny different model so you flashed wrong kernel so your Phone might be perbricked. Anyways try flashing stock Rom through flashtool. It might work. If you're not able to boot into fastboot/flashmode then your Phone is permanently dead.

dont be dramatic, get sony's official flashtool and flash back a stock rom, then restart from scratch.
1: download the CM you want but it must be with codename nozomi in it
2: if its cm10 get jellybean 4.1.2 gapps, if its cm9.1 get 4.0.4 gapps,
3: place the files through the stock rom back on your sd card
4: flash the boot.img located in the cm file you downloaded, start your phone in fastboot, then:fastboot flash boot boot.img
5: fastboot reboot
6: wipe cache, dalvik, factory reset and format system(optional) in cwm
7:instal cm zip in cwm
8: install correct google apps zip
9: reboot the device
10: enjoy
methode works for nearly every ROM around here

Highvoltage,
You are making all to quick and without attention, too much mistakes for such a short notice.
You don't yet know the process, why don't you lock your Bl and try some custom roms for it? That way you can practice the method and will have almost no chance to hardbrick your phone.
You have your phone alive at this moment or not?
In each case, start from scratch, go to flashtool and go for stock rom again.

Hold on? So u have a pac rom zip on your sd still? If so just flash it

Yes, I managed to get it work with adb. i installed zip in cwm with sideload and I think that wasnt succesful so then pushed zip file to sdcard with adb and flashed it again. My biggest problem was finding working usb drivers. I tried about 15 different ways to install drivers but then just downloaded just some random driver and it worked
no time to explain right now because I am at work. Sry for messy text. Will update this post soon

Little help about custom roms

Here is my problem:
I was playing with my brother's Arc S and the things I done are that I downgraded to 462 from 587, rooted it, gone back to 587.
After that I flashed via X-Parts CWM 5. I downloaded Xperia Ultimate HD, I booted it in recovery but something was not OK. Couldn't go to recovery mode with Power + Vol down, so I gone back to X-Parts and pressed reboot in recovery mode. I flashed the rom and after that it bricked..
Couldn't do anything so I restored it with Sony Update Service. I need help how to flash that rom without bricking the device again? I have SGS3 and it is pretty simplier that this..
EDIT: Forgot to say that I tried to unlock the bootloader but it told me that it is already unlocked.
Before installing the Rom zip, what did you do inside the cwm?

Then you don't need X-Parts, just flash a kernel with CWM.

[Q] LT15i bricked: how to get into CWM??

Good morning,
Yesterday, I tried to unlock and root my friend's Xperia Arc (LT15i). Although it was running FW .62, I did manage to unlock the bootloader and root the phone. I installed CWM, emptied the phone (I thought) and installed the Xperia Ultimate HD ROM.
Unfortunately, I think I forgot a detail. I wiped data/factory reset, cache and Dalvik, but after the installation of the ROM completed succesfully, rebooting the phone keeps it hanging at the Sony Ericsson logo. It seems to be hanging right at that moment, because the problem is that when I then press the Vol.Down button, I'm not getting back into CWM.
I tried to use the "Unbrick" option to flash an original .ftf file via Flashtool, but then I get the "Error in processHeader: 1 Incorrect function".
Can anybody give me a clue on how to:
a) get into CWM
or
b) restore the phone so I can try again
Thanks a lot in advance!
PS: is there a way to get in the bootloader and go to CWM from there? It all seems to be so much more difficult then on my own Nexus S

FW .62 is gingerbread ROM and UHD is ICS ROM.I think you forgot to install ICS kernel. Use the suggested lupus kernel for UHD or any other ICS kernel in Fastboot mod or using flash tool then you can boot into ICS.

Oh crap, I didn't even think about that I figured it would be implemented in the ROM. Thanks a lot, I'll try that right away when I get home! :good:

Flashing ROM doesn't flash kernel. You need to flash kernel if you are flashing different version of ROM like Gb,ICS,JB. Flash kernel, then go to CWM and flash ROM zip.
