Firstly you cannot root unless you unlock the bootloader. Secondly the only current method to unlock the bootloader is via HTCDev.com which is an official and tested method. You will not brick your device unlocking this way.
That's why I am asking about the risk of unlocking the boot loader. I guess I will just go for it?!

Which phone should I select on htcdev.com to unlock the one x? All other models supported? It would be better to unlock it on a non-htc site, to avoid them knowing your warranty is expired after that..

I was wondering if I should select all other models too. Good to know it works considering all the warnings HTC posted on that page about things that can go wrong.

On HTCDev.com select "All Other Models". Just to clarify unlocking the bootloader on this site DOES NOT void your warranty. If your phone developed a screen defect for example HTC would fix this without charge under the warranty. If you bricked your phone as a result of flashing a custom rom then HTC would tell you to jog on.
Currently using HTCDev.com is the only method available to unlock your phones bootloader.
I was a little apprehensive myself but did it today, took all but 5 minutes!
Very easy and straight forward! Just follow the guides in the development section

Thank you very much... But if I do unlock the phone, could it prevent me to update to 1.28 fw as it is released? Otherwise, if I wait for 1.28, can I unlock later? Maybe the two things are completely unrelated, can you clarify me this point?

This is going to be a fairly stupid question, and it seems that similar questions have been asked but never really fully answered.
I will be purchasing the new HTC One M8 and I cant understand the difference between the unlocked and developer edition. I am aware that the developer edition has an unlocked bootloader, but couldn't I just get the unlocked variant bootloader unlocked from HTCDev.com?
If that is the only difference, it seems they wouldn't make two different variants and just direct developers and those who wish to modify their phones software to HTCdev.com. I feel like there has to be some other difference.
Any info would be great.
Thanks

With the m7 the only difference was the bootloader was unlocked from factory and for us type people that like to mess with there phones but unlock variant of the phone is for the people that are happy with the software and have a secure phone with bootloader locked. Now that being said about the m7, I'm assuming the m8 is going to be the same.
Also yes you can unlock the bootloader with the unlock phone. There might be a difference in the warranty also....

Developer comes bootloader unlocked with a warranty. Unlocked comes locked and, if you choose to unlock the bootloader, you lose the warranty.

This is along the lines of what I was figuring, but even when you go to HTCdev.com It says if you unlock it that you MAY lose your warranty if any damage was deemed related to you doing so. So if I mess up the phone on the dev edition it doesnt matter?

On the dev edition you won't need to go to htcdev. You go through htcdev to unlock the bootloader, on the dev edition the bootloader is already unlocked.
On the unlocked version, they mean a different thing by unlocked. I'm guessing it is network unlocked (sim-free), whereas the developer is bootloader unlocked, two separate things.

I understand the difference of what is being unlocked. Just seems silly to me to make the developer edition if you can just take the carrier unlocked version of the phone and unlock the bootloader anyway.

You know what, you got me, htc sell both the unlocked and developer version for $700 on their website. If its a case of warranty not being voided for the developer edition, it would make no sense for anyone to buy the unlocked at the same price. And seeing as htcdev provides a simple enough guide for any noob to unlock his bootloader I don't see why a skilled "developer" would need to buy a developer version.
I'm curious now.

Confirmed with HTC today that this is pretty much it. The rep said that if you get the Carrier Unlocked edition and unlock the bootloader from HTCdev.com that you may not be eligible for your warranty if it was deemed that damage was related to you doing so. Where as the developer edition keeps the warranty as it comes bootloader unlocked from the factory.

hi,
i have htc one m8(european version) for almost two weeks and i am very satisfied of him.
i want to root the phone and i know all the procedure to do this.
my question is, if i open the bootloader through the "htcdev" site, there is any chance that my carrier will know that i have open the bootloader and after that will cancel my warranty?
because, i read guides on the XDA how to unroot the su and how to flash the stock recovery but i am afraid that it is not enough to keep my warranty be maintained.
thanks

your bootloader will show that you unlocked your phone. However as long as there is no issue with cpu etc meaning hardware that could have been damaged by overclocking etc there should be no issue at all.
you don´t loose your warranty in any case, only certain repair things might not be accepted.

thankes for the answer.
so as long as there is no problem with hardware and the phone itself, the warranty mantain.
but they can actually see that the bootloader is open in the phone or they dont care of it?
there is a guide how to lock the bootloader?

If you just do the fastboot OEM lock command then it'll say relocked. However, if you're s-off there's a guide by scott1223 that let's you go back to locked instead of relocked. This way they won't be able to tell of you actually unlocked it or not.

You will never be able to unlock the bootloader on that phone, unless your carrier can give you some kind of code to change your unlock status (not sure this is even possible).

The BL is different, if it came from O2 then chances are you cant unlock the BL.
So there is no chance? It worked with xperia arc and omnius. Costs about 15$, that would be ok. But will it work with our z1c in the near future? Or is it just "luck" to find an exploit?

Well nothing is impossible, but it isn't likely as it requires a bootloader exploit. Realistically it isn't going to happen though, unless some smart people devote a lot of time to it. The most likely scenario (using test point to gain more software access) would require hardware tampering.
Hello Mentalghost,
Unfortunately there is no way to unlock the bootloader when the status is "No".

Or wait for locked bootloader versions or someone makes modded version with unlocked rom that is been modded like one where you install modded that is unlocked install and then can unlock bootloader did in xperia s I use to have was a modded rom that was originally saying bootloader unlock no and added new Base rom and then said bootloadr unlock yes maybe this will happen on this phone in time or locked bootloader kernels and rom come along

Plus, there will be no solution. The reason why Xperia Arc S and other 2011 Xperias worked with testpoint method was because of that there was a big security flaw in the security of the testpoints nand access, but those flaws have been fixed in newer Xperias and newer 2011 Xperias also.

+1 It was coming to that realization that I sold my O2 locked Z after 6 months to buy an unbranded Z1 Compact. It worked out cheaper too spending hundreds of pounds up front for my Phone with the added bonus of having access to all of it.

LG your going to lose money if you don't allow an unlock. .sony does...htc does...samsung doesnt even lock the Canadian bootloaders.... ill buy from one of those companies instead until you do what is right for your customers.

Not sure what you're asking here. You'll need an unlock device to unlock your bootloader/S-OFF. Sunshine may be releasing a new root method though, that might work.
