$30 upgrade fee - Verizon Droid Incredible 2

My contract is up on May 15th, and now Verizon is charging $30 bucks to upgrade!! WTF??? I'm looking to change to ATT (HTC ONE X) or prepaid as I am not going to give these fookers anymore money. I'm so tired of corporate greed. They say this because it is to "provide customers with the level of service and support they have come to expect." ???? Really? whenever I go into my local verizon store, they ask me about new phones and my newest roms. I'm so pissed right now at them.

As far as I can remember Verizon has always charged a 30 dollar fee..... they waived my last upgrade fee though because the lady messed up.
Sent from my Incredible 2 using Tapatalk

Just read an article that said this is a new fee and starts on April 22. Apparently, in addition to data limits, this is a new fact of life. Sad. Might be time to shop around again though.

If only they knew how right they are with the "provide customers with a level of service and support they have come to expect from Verizon"... Over the years big red has become so greedy, I actually do expect a level of fees and charges that make absolutely no sense. I think the $30 this time might be for the Vaseline... Lol.

Yeah man the least they can do is spit on it before they bend you over. What about best buy or amazon do will they incorporate the $30 fee?

is there a prepaid service in PA that anyone uses and has had good luck with? I have a t-mobile phone and the DINC2, so not sure if I can use either one with a prepaid service.

this fee is new and starting april 22nd. Maybe your thinking of the early upgrade fee?

Hmm... I may start looking around next time my contract is up.

I don't what the fee was but they were going to charge me $30 when I upgraded. She waived it though because somewhere along the way she messed up and almost charged me over $300 for this phone when iit was supposed to be free.

D*mn, so much for "providing better service"

Call customer service and see if they can waive it. The Verizon stores are unable/unwilling to do anything for people. Smart phones have turned cellphones back into a "luxury" item again.

I usually have pretty good luck when calling customer service, and emailing them, but all I keep hearing from them is "blah blah blah". I emailed the director of customer service and the East Coast Regional manager, both have yet to get back to me. They keep saying how everyone else does it, they are 6 dollars cheaper, they have smartphone workshops, and it helps them with serving the customer better. The only thing they are serving is lining their pockets! I WILL go to ATT and get the ONE X, if they keep this up! My company waives the activation fee, so I don't have to pay that either. Greedy Bastards!

Guys as a few of you know I work for Verizon in sales. The $30 fee being added to upgrades is new. The other fees that you are referring to. The 30 being waived for early upgrades it's a fee that is done in stores to cover cost. alot of stores don't do this fee.
Just for reference. Verizon it's the last of the big 4 carriers to implement this upgrade fee. I don't agree with it at all but changing carriers will only led to the same thing. It is like comparing a Apple to an apple wearing a orange costume.
Still it looks like this is going to bite big red in the ass. Sales will be affected. Verizon will feel the blow financially.

I never go to the stores to do anything. I deal with customer service exclusively because it is the only way I am ever able to get anything done. I doubt ill leave Verizon anytime soon. I still have unlimited data and I intend to keep it as long as I possibly can. I may pay out the ass but nobody else offers it that's worth a crap in my area. The customer service with Verizon isn't half bad anyway.

I have the unlimited data as well, but as most everyone knows, we "elite" customers get throttled (often!) because they offered to grandfather our plans and we took it. When I got my phone, music and netflix streamed without a hiccup, now because I'm not a "tiered" customer, I get throttled (and labeled as an "excessive use" customer).
The point; you either get it from one end or the other, either way they're going to stick it to their customers because we all want smartphones and they know they can plug us along the way for it. Atleast here, we can work together to screw them back!

Wait, is this to upgrade at any time? Or just early upgrade?
I dont think I have been ever charged to upgrade anything, but I have been charged to activate lines in the past (30 bucks)
I know they charge early upgrade fee, which is fine to me I guess as I dont really upgrade often.

http://gizmodo.com/5901023/no-more-free-phone-upgrades-verizons-30-fee-starts-april-22nd
No More Free Phone Upgrades: Verizon’s $30 Fee Starts April 22nd
On April 22nd, Verizon will begin charging a $30 upgrade fee when existing customers buy a new phone on a new contract. It's the sad end of the free upgrade era.

FYI: if you look on eBay you can find new phones for the same price as buying one on contract. I was looking at Galaxy Nexus phones a month ago and you can find the CDMA version easily for 250-300 or right now the Rezounds are going for 150-200.
Does it suck to pay $30 for an upgrade? Yeah it does but I probably wont shift to a new carrier because I'm on a loyalty plan, getting an employee discount AND have my unlimited data grandfathered. I'll deal with paying the $30 every two years.

NO option to buy full price on a no commit plan for a new customer?

Is this a Sprint thing?
I just called two corporate stores and they said that a new customer can't buy the phone for full retail price without a 2 year contract.
In other words, you must sign a two years contract if you are a new customer.
Can anyone here confirm this?
Go here

Then goto the Samsung Epic 4G Touch order page and you can get it at full price.
I can't post links yet until my post count gets above 8 so sorry for no direct link.

Not sure if that is the correct answer, there is an Sprint employee in the Evo 3d forum that said yes.

Thanks all for the replies. What is the ETF on this phone ? It might end up costing the same as full retail price.

I AM a Sprint employee. I deal with it every single day. Even if someone buys a phone off Ebay, some guy off the street, or buys it in the store, there is going to be a two year agreement. The ETF is going to be 350 for the first six months and starts to decrease from there. If you are going to get one, you may as well get the discounted price.

Funny thing is, when the OG EVO came out, i bought from craigslist and was able to activate it on a month to month plan as a new customer while i was not able to get the same if would buy it at the Sprint store. but i think i got lucky that time and that Sprint policy is really to have a 2 year agreement regardless of the amount you buy the phone at.
The questions is what is the ETF. it might come out the same if i buy it for $199 and pay an ETF when i want out. i never keep a phone more than a few months and i have zero carrier loyalty. Sprint is the only carrier that does not allow month to month contracts it seems.
hold on hold on ... lol
you are wanting to buy a phone at full price then activate as a new customer without a contract??? on month to month? dont know about that one... i totally misread your post and thought you were already a customer and thought this guy was really giving you bad advice to be a sprint employee but now that i reread your post his answer sounds about right... sorry dude
Actually...they are both right. There is a new thing called business freedom. Which is where if you open a new business account with a federal tax ID, you can get this new plan that is a no contract commitment deal. If you interested in more information PM me so we can further discuss this.
Just come tome from now on with all your Sprint needs
Yeah, but you have to have a business and it is more expensive every month since there is no contract. Unless you actually have a business with seasonal employees I really wouldn't recommend it. If you get a new Tax ID just for this, you are GOING to have a deposit. You could run a blended credit but that might only knock it down fifty bucks. Sprint may also want proof that it is a real business so they may need bank statements with the business name, so you have to have a few months worth of that. Would you really want to go through all that just to pay more every month anyway? The average consumer would do best just to sign the contract.

You might be able to find a friend who wants out of their contract and are near the end of it. Well, right now they can get out for free...
In all seriousness. I wouldn't mind helping someone out if I ever lost one of my members in my family plan. Charge them something like 30 dollars +10 dollar for smart phones and I wouldn't hold you to a 2 year contract if you brought your own phone to use.
That's actually a very good idea. If you pay full price you don't have to sign a contract if you put the phone on an existing line. Maybe you could find someone who wants to switch to your current provider from Sprint and you could just take over each other's lines.

Sprint launches early upgrade promo

In an industry where customer churn can be likened to the fearsome troll under the bridge, Sprint has launched a program designed to keep its favored subscribers around for another two years. While not everyone is eligible -- those who've upgraded less than eight months ago, corporate outfits and those in collections need not inquire -- the program lets customers buy their way out of their current commitment and become eligible for a new, subsidized handset. The promotion begins February 12th and is set to run through the 14th of April, where the amount you pay correlates to the time since your last upgrade. So if you're currently pining for the Epic 4G Touch or the iPhone 4S, just give your local Sprint store a call this Sunday. They just may be able to hook you up.

IMO opinion this is more of a contract buyout to get new user pricing than it is an early upgrade promo like the Sprint Premier Gold program was.
It makes 0 sense to pay $55 to buy out for early upgrade if you're like 1-4 months out.

Keep in mind though, that we live in a world where people will happily spend well in excess of $55 to "upgrade" from something like a IPhone 4 to a 4s. Sometimes, "sense" takes a back seat to a desire to be instantaneously satisfied... lol

I have to agree, people at my store will pay a lot to get their upgrade now to get the phone they want now. I think a lot of it comes from people who buy cheap phones and just can't take having them anymore and will do anything to get out of that phone.

This actually isn't a promotion. It's just a last resort offering by Retention as of right now. You pay on average $10/month remaining on your contract with an average maximum of 6 months to move your upgrade up. We've been doing it for months for customers in my stores, but it's never really been publicly advertised.

My wife is only 2 months away from an upgrade; if she waits, she still pays 36 dollars "activation fee", or, if she does it tomorrow, its the same 36 dollars, so, if you are a month or 2 away, it doesn't cost you a dime more to do it now..
yes, i am sure its to clean out the existing inventory before the "new" network is in full swing..

I work at a preferred dealer as well, just tell your customers to call customer care and see if they can do an early upgrade. If that doesn't work have them be transferred to retentions and say someone they know was able to buy out their remaining contract and get an early upgrade. That easy. I have my upgrade still, saving it for the GSIII because I'm not stupid like some people.

i have an airave for that
Ok I called Sprint customer care today inquiring about the upgrade. My girl's line is due for upgrade in October and I am tired of her complaining about her Evo3d restarting all the time. So I called to see if I can get that upgrade for an Iphone for her. I was told that the new promo is only for people who's upgrade is in April or earlier and are also having phone issues. I think I'm going to call a corporate store tomorrow. Any advice or am I wasting my time? The Engadget article said if you upgraded within the last 8 months your or not eligible. I didn't upgrade this line within the last 8 months.
To upgrade or not to upgrade....
I saw this on Friday and wandered into a Sprint store on Sunday. The fella at the desk told me this was all legit and that I would need to call customer service because he could not do anything from the store (he said to ask for the "retentions" department).
I've been suffering with a Hero for the last 18 months. Loved the phone when I first got it, but it didn't take long to realize that it was not powerful enough to keep me happy. My wife is on her third Moment because everything about that phone just doesn't seem to work. I was hoping to hold out for an LTE phone but it appears those won't be dropping until late summer, and I'm not sure if we can hold out that long.
On the Sprint website, I get a message that I am eligible for $150 off a new phone on April 1 (remnants of the Premiere Program). From what I read, I'll have to pay $36 to upgrade in April or I can pay $55 now.
So my question(s) to all you Sprint people out there, am I reading all this correctly? Will I still qualify for the $150 off the new phone? Am I absolutely crazy for not waiting for LTE? Should I take the SGS2E4GT (Galaxy S 2) or hold out for the Nexus?
Thanks for the input.

I would buy a used phone off Craig's list or something now and hold onto you upgrade for an LTE device. You can get an E4GT for around $300 and EVO 3D for much less or an Nexus 4G for even less then that.
That is what I would do because once the GN drops you know you will want it or whatever cool LTE phone comes out soon after that...
The way I read this is that they are just pro-rating your ETF (the way they all should do anyway).
In theory, it works like this:
A high end handset costs ~$600 but in exchange for signing a 2-year contract, the cell phone carrier will subsidize $400 of the cost and roll the cost of that "loan" into the cost of your monthly service. You get a new phone without as large an initial outlay of cash and they gain a steady source of income for at least the next 2 years.
In theory you should be able to bring your own phone and get service at a lower cost off-contract because you aren't paying off a subsidy but since the top 3 providers don't offer this, there is not really any benefit to not taking the subsidy. You are already paying the same monthly rate so other than not being locked into a service contract, you gain nothing financially from not taking the $400 subsidy.
Along with this, in theory, your ETF should drop by 1/24th every month as you are basically paying off the subsidy one month at a time over two years. Once again, it doesn't quite work that way. At least this is an attempt to let people pay off the remaining subsidy before signing a new contract and taking a new one.
I would prefer to just pay $600 for my phone and then pay $17 less per month (approx 1/24 of $400) with no contract but since the US market seems accustomed to cheaper subsidized handsets on contract I don't know it would ever take off much. The contracts, handset exclusives, and lack of porting options have made it so the carriers have little incentive to compete on price or plan options..but that's another topic for another day.
Well I got mine it was 40 bucks but.my Gf needs a new phone had so, iPhone 4s and she can have my day 2week old epic touch 4g
Update: I got my upgrade and the fee was added to my bill and my upgrade is now waiting. Pretty cool. I have another upgrade in August so I will se what they have then.

how long do you have left on each phone contract wise? are the other 2 smartphones? what was the etf on each phone?
unless you have a documented history of issues with verizon over multiple phones/lines on ur account in regards to service, they wont let you out w/ etf or until you are off contract
id do the math on ur etf and decide what to do then
We've got 2 smartphones and one dummy phone. At $210 a month it's a bit steep.
The current ETF is $625 to end the contract.
Replacement phone plan is only $90 a month.
So $120 a month would pay off that ETF pretty quickly.
I've heard about some sites that would let users trade off thier plans and phones a while ago, I just can't remember anything else.

We certainly don't want you leave us. Is there anything we can do to change your mind about canceling the service?
You do have the option of having someone take over the line by completing an Assumption of Liability (AOL) You would have to agree to release the line to them and after a credit check, they can take over the line and put it in their name.

Why is verizon even on xda
A: to figure oit how to break root and screw us more
B: Damage control since they know they are loosing customers.
Why doesnt verizon worry about putting out uodates to fix issues instead of trying to break root all the time.

For me it's really just about the money, the phone bill is getting out of hand, and I can switch to prepaid phones, with data for a lot less money each month.
and yes, babies do take up a lot of money.
I also want out of my VZW contract. If it were just me I wouldn't care about the price changes... The price difference isn't anything too extreme for me. However, I have my father and my grandmother on my plan -- both of them have basic phones and I only charge them $30 each month TOTAL. Their payment would basically double.
Plus I don't want to lose my unlimited data (even though I don't think I have EVER used over 2GB).
My husband is on AT&T (he desperately wanted the iPhone and didn't want to wait for VZW to get it) so I will probably end up switching unless Verizon changes their new pricing before next September.
The new Share Everything is DUMB. Plain and simple.

My husband is on AT&T (he desperately wanted the iPhone and didn't want to wait for VZW to get it) so I will probably end up switching unless Verizon changes their new pricing before next September.
The new Share Everything is DUMB. Plain and simple.

Are you saying you may switch to at&t to join your husband? If so keep in mind that they don't have unlimited data either.

No, I know that. It would just be cheaper for us to be on the same plan by about $20. Since DH is ADAMANT about being able to use talk & data at the same time, I'll end up on his plan. Not my first choice, trust me. My very first cell phone in HS was a prepaid VZW plan. I've been with them now for 10 years with GREAT customer service. I'll be sad to leave.

[Q] GS3 with T-Mobile Advantage?

I am planning on switching to T-Mobile and I did some research to try and find the best deal possible since I am going to get into a new 2 year contract. I am a college student attending the University of Ohio and my university doesn't have a direct relationship with the school. I found a discount via the T-Mobile Advantage program and I attached the flyer here.
You get
A $50 account credit with a new activation (expires on 12/31)
Waived activation fees
10% discount
You have to call CS to activate I am not sure whether you can do it online. There is a promo code in the flyer which you have to mention. That discount is also affiliated with the student discount website Student rate. I am not sure whether you actually have to be a student or not.
Has anyone used this discount before??
Well with everything make sure you read the fine print, always little things to reduced the discounts you're getting. You sure you want tmobile they are not definitely not the best company in terms of customer service and business model. Anywho you should definitely check out best buy, they usually have really good deals on phone.
Right now they have the s3 for 179.99 way cheaper than what you would get it at tmobile around 300 or so. Make sure you call them because for some reason tmobile doesn't allow in store pickup(****ty business model). Also I don't know how all that works when you starting off, I was just upgrading good luck.

Examine if you really need to enter a 2-year contract.
Look at the Montly 4G plans. What are your needs - how many minutes and how much data do you need ?
I went with the 100minute/unlimited texting/5Gb plan for $30/mo. Even buying the phone up-front I'm saving a great deal over locking myself into a contract - a contract that wouldn't even give me what I actually wanted.
I made the mistake of going contract with Sprint on my first phone off of my family's the family plan. Overpaid for service I barely used. I don't see myself going back to contract plans - you overpay in the long-run - much more than if you just bought the phone and then paid a lower rate for the service instead of the hidden fee of paying them back for that "free" or "reduced cost" phone.
For instance, if I went with Verizon and paid $80/mo for their cheapest smartphone plan, that's $1200 more over two years than I'm paying now. Take away the $450 I spent on the phone - that's still $750. I could literally buy a brand new phone with THAT, even and two great-condition used ones. Maybe I'm a cynical jerk, but carrier subsidising is just a way to trick you into paying more money.

It really is for most cases. Just some people like to aim high and go for an s3 and not everyone has 700 upfront to pay a company. While you end up paying more in a contract most people get paid every 2 to 4 weeks and are satisfied paying a fee monthly and two years is not very long. After the two years you can always take that phone you bought and get into those no contact based companies like metro etc.

Is this whole offer expired? Or just the $50 credit offer?

How exactly do you get on the $30 unlimited plan with 100 talk minutes if you are already on T-Mobile prepaid.. I checked in the area on my T-Mobile to change the plan and it doesn't show up in there?

It looks like the $50 has expired but discount is still valid
Actually, this offer seems to be back on back on until 02/28 - $50 credit + 10% discount + waived activation fees. They also have some pretty good sales on handsets
Samsung Galaxy SIII is free right now until the 18th of feb, i think actually almost all tmo devices are free

Is this just new accounts and contracts through calling customer service? I got the s3 for free after tons of issues with my amaze, and now my wife is super jealous and wants one, haha.

If you call and upgrade using the promo code I think you can still get the discount and a discounted device. It mayb depend whether your account is eligible for an upgrade or not. You should definitely give it a shot they're usually very helpful on the phone!

I pay $30 plus less than $2 in sales tax with T - Mobile.
I've never had an issue with their customer service - and it was I fact one of the reasons I was happy to switch to them when my contract with Sprint was up.
People need to pick what works best for them.

Bad thing about t-mobile is that when you run your limit on t-mobile they put you on 2g. Simp puts you on 3

Bad thing abiut Simple Mobile is that I'd pay $50 to be throttled after 2Gb whereas I now pay $30 and get 5Gb until throttled. And T - Mobile avtually tells you about the soft data cap up front.
Hey, Simple Mobile is great for whoever it works for, and T - Mobile is great for who it works for. Notice that I'm not calling them "douches" even though I disagree with some of their business practices.

I am calling them douche because I've had a family plan since the razor came out and the price just gets crazy. They treated me like a wallet. And yeah simp tells you, read the fine print.

Legal Notice From Tmobile

Just wanted to share this email I just received from Tmobile. Looks like it has to do with anyone who is paying for their phone via installments.

Dear T-Mobile® Customer,
This notice is being sent to you pursuant to an agreement between the Washington State Attorney General's Office and T-Mobile. Please note: wireless service is required to maintain your phone or device payment plan. Makes sense. If they give you a loan for a phone and you cancel the plan then they still get there money. Its like racking up a credit card and then canceling it, still got to pay it off.

Not in Canada. If you stay on your contract til it ends...phone is paid. If you cancel early, they charge you every penny you owe for the phone, then some!!!
Sent from my cell phone telephone....
They are just now sending this out because the attorney general in washington was too stupid to understand what the new plans entailed. Been in the news since last week...
They aimed to sue tmobile and instead agreed to explain. Not like the full details werent disclosed by every tech site in the world

As well as to discourage people from bailing out. These companies can and will get their money one way or another.

The handset payment plan is for 22 months, this gives you 2 months remaining on your contract plan. Allowing you time to consider upgrade options and in hopes you will renew a little early. If you take refund of handset, you are still required to pay an early termination fee for cancelling plan. I wonder if you have to cancel plan? Get full refund of phone ( 599$) , keep plan, buy used sgs2 off craiglist for 200-300$.
BANK
there is no spoon.....
just as bad here been in a long fight about these contracts and cancelling plans we get no service but we are stuck in tmo jail paying for bricks 80% of the time

The "classic" plans have the cost of the phones built into them already. They get the money over the two year contract you sign. The kicker is that Death star and Verizon do this too but what happens when your contract is up and you don't take an upgrade? Does your bill go down because your not paying for the phone anymore? Nope. They keep charging you as if your still paying extra for the phone! T-Mobile has it right with these new plans and they are smart to do it I think.

This is in relation to Washington State's AG (correctly) declaring T-Mobile's contractual claims (or, more accurately, the no contract claims) to be false. Broadband Reports has a writeup on it and I believe Ars Technica does as well: http://www.dslreports.com/shownews/Washington-AG-Hits-TMobile-For-99-iPhone-Offer-124044
