In an industry where customer churn can be likened to the fearsome troll under the bridge, Sprint has launched a program designed to keep its favored subscribers around for another two years. While not everyone is eligible -- those who've upgraded less than eight months ago, corporate outfits and those in collections need not inquire -- the program lets customers buy their way out of their current commitment and become eligible for a new, subsidized handset. The promotion begins February 12th and is set to run through the 14th of April, where the amount you pay correlates to the time since your last upgrade. So if you're currently pining for the Epic 4G Touch or the iPhone 4S, just give your local Sprint store a call this Sunday. They just may be able to hook you up.

IMO opinion this is more of a contract buyout to get new user pricing than it is an early upgrade promo like the Sprint Premier Gold program was.
It makes 0 sense to pay $55 to buy out for early upgrade if you're like 1-4 months out.

Keep in mind though, that we live in a world where people will happily spend well in excess of $55 to "upgrade" from something like a IPhone 4 to a 4s. Sometimes, "sense" takes a back seat to a desire to be instantaneously satisfied... lol

I have to agree, people at my store will pay a lot to get their upgrade now to get the phone they want now. I think a lot of it comes from people who buy cheap phones and just can't take having them anymore and will do anything to get out of that phone.

This actually isn't a promotion. It's just a last resort offering by Retention as of right now. You pay on average $10/month remaining on your contract with an average maximum of 6 months to move your upgrade up. We've been doing it for months for customers in my stores, but it's never really been publicly advertised.

Are you working for a corporate store or a preferred retailer? I'm a preferred retailer and would love to know how you go about doing it, and compare that to the way we do it at our store. Shoot me a PM, love to compare notes!

My wife is only 2 months away from an upgrade; if she waits, she still pays 36 dollars "activation fee", or, if she does it tomorrow, its the same 36 dollars, so, if you are a month or 2 away, it doesn't cost you a dime more to do it now..
yes, i am sure its to clean out the existing inventory before the "new" network is in full swing..
WOOT, 3000 POSTS!!
I work at a preferred dealer as well, just tell your customers to call customer care and see if they can do an early upgrade. If that doesn't work have them be transferred to retentions and say someone they know was able to buy out their remaining contract and get an early upgrade. That easy. I have my upgrade still, saving it for the GSIII because I'm not stupid like some people.

i have an airave for that
Ok I called Sprint customer care today inquiring about the upgrade. My girl's line is due for upgrade in October and I am tired of her complaining about her Evo3d restarting all the time. So I called to see if I can get that upgrade for an Iphone for her. I was told that the new promo is only for people who's upgrade is in April or earlier and are also having phone issues. I think I'm going to call a corporate store tomorrow. Any advice or am I wasting my time? The Engadget article said if you upgraded within the last 8 months your or not eligible. I didn't upgrade this line within the last 8 months.
To upgrade or not to upgrade....
I saw this on Friday and wandered into a Sprint store on Sunday. The fella at the desk told me this was all legit and that I would need to call customer service because he could not do anything from the store (he said to ask for the "retentions" department).
I've been suffering with a Hero for the last 18 months. Loved the phone when I first got it, but it didn't take long to realize that it was not powerful enough to keep me happy. My wife is on her third Moment because everything about that phone just doesn't seem to work. I was hoping to hold out for an LTE phone but it appears those won't be dropping until late summer, and I'm not sure if we can hold out that long.
On the Sprint website, I get a message that I am eligible for $150 off a new phone on April 1 (remnants of the Premiere Program). From what I read, I'll have to pay $36 to upgrade in April or I can pay $55 now.
So my question(s) to all you Sprint people out there, am I reading all this correctly? Will I still qualify for the $150 off the new phone? Am I absolutely crazy for not waiting for LTE? Should I take the SGS2E4GT (Galaxy S 2) or hold out for the Nexus?
Thanks for the input.

I would buy a used phone off Craig's list or something now and hold onto you upgrade for an LTE device. You can get an E4GT for around $300 and EVO 3D for much less or an Nexus 4G for even less then that.
That is what I would do because once the GN drops you know you will want it or whatever cool LTE phone comes out soon after that...
The way I read this is that they are just pro-rating your ETF (the way they all should do anyway).
In theory, it works like this:
A high end handset costs ~$600 but in exchange for signing a 2-year contract, the cell phone carrier will subsidize $400 of the cost and roll the cost of that "loan" into the cost of your monthly service. You get a new phone without as large an initial outlay of cash and they gain a steady source of income for at least the next 2 years.
In theory you should be able to bring your own phone and get service at a lower cost off-contract because you aren't paying off a subsidy but since the top 3 providers don't offer this, there is not really any benefit to not taking the subsidy. You are already paying the same monthly rate so other than not being locked into a service contract, you gain nothing financially from not taking the $400 subsidy.
Along with this, in theory, your ETF should drop by 1/24th every month as you are basically paying off the subsidy one month at a time over two years. Once again, it doesn't quite work that way. At least this is an attempt to let people pay off the remaining subsidy before signing a new contract and taking a new one.
I would prefer to just pay $600 for my phone and then pay $17 less per month (approx 1/24 of $400) with no contract but since the US market seems accustomed to cheaper subsidized handsets on contract I don't know it would ever take off much. The contracts, handset exclusives, and lack of porting options have made it so the carriers have little incentive to compete on price or plan options..but that's another topic for another day.
Well I got mine it was 40 bucks but.my Gf needs a new phone had so, iPhone 4s and she can have my day 2week old epic touch 4g
Update: I got my upgrade and the fee was added to my bill and my upgrade is now waiting. Pretty cool. I have another upgrade in August so I will se what they have then.

I have two questions.
I have been eyeing either this phone or the GN for a while now, and I am about ready to just shut up and grab the SGS2 already.
Looking online, the only thing that should be coming out anytime too soon is the Blaze which I am still assuming is not an upgraded SGS2 (I don't know if people are just paranoid, or ready for another Vibrant 4g situation). So it seems like I won't be kicking myself in a few months about the SGS2 (minus, MAYBE, a GN release).
So long story short.
Question 1: Have I missed evidence on why I should wait 1 or 2 months to grab a new phone?
Question 2: What would be the smartest way to get one?
Short story long again:
Ebay has new in box phones starting at 499 with shipping, but one has no returns and the other has 3 days. Will ebay/paypal protection save me if I find out there are problems with the phone outside those few days?
I hate asking this, but what problems would I want to look for? Unless they develop over time I don't want to know about the screen issues I have heard mentioned vaguely, but others seem to imply it's not a big deal so if I never notice it then it's not hurting me.
I am wanting to use Ebay because it is 100 bucks cheaper than Amazon but Tmobile would only be like 598 or something. Should I stop being so paranoid and just grab it from ebay?
Sorry, I stayed up way too late with my finger over the mouse button and I am now just about ready to start pacing but I am not getting google search results to do anything to calm or warn me yet. Is it worth the 100 bucks to buy it from Ebay instead of straight from Tmobile?
Sorry, I will stop spazzing.
Those people who have unopened boxes of galaxy s 2 are people who are eligible for an upgrade but like their current phone so they decide to make money of their contract. I recently did this.my mom didn't want a new phone so I used her upgrade to buy a new gs2 and sold out on Ebay for $500. These people are legit and Ebay will make sure you don't get scammed.you should just buy it
Question 1: Tmobile is not releasing a new amazing phone for awhile. (unless somehow the galaxy s2 HD comes over). But that is not likely at all.so there is no need to wait.unless you want to wait another year for the galaxy s3. Ice cream sandwich is just around the corner. Right now is the best time to get it.

Thanks for the response, I am just worried I get it and, say, the speaker phone is messed up and I learn about it a day or two after the return window and then I have trouble getting it fixed instead of just returning it or exchanging it.
I have never had to do that though, so 100 bucks is a lot to KNOW I can.

Seriously? You'd advocate risking getting your phone's IMEI number blacklisted to save $30?
The phones are $529 from t-mobile.
Why risk it for $30??? These "new" phones can be reported as lost then the insurance replaces it and they block the IMEI number and the sucker is out $400-$500.
BTW, Getting a "free" phone on a subsidy plan doesn't make the phone free, you're still paying for it over the 2 year term. With T-mobiles Unlimited Talk,Text, Web for $50 + buying the phone outright, over the 2 years a contract would run, you are paying out $1200+$530 for the phone so $1730. For the equivilant plan with a "free" phone you're paying $80 a month over 24 months so $1920.
So $1920 - $1730 = $190 You pay more for the phone than if you bought the phone with cash. And just looking now, you have to pony up $280 to buy the phone when you "upgrade" then a $50 rebate, so you're paying even more.
Heck, with T-mobile you can ge tthe non subsidized plan for $0 a month, pay $200 down, and finance the phone with T-mobile for $20 a month and come out ahead if you are looking for the least amount up front.
BTW, Ebay buyer protection is only good for 30 days after the sale, on day 31 the seller can report the phone "lost" and have it turned off and get their replacement.
i agree with gallaxxeess
no point saving $30 if you have a high risk of having your IMEI black listed
there's a topic about it in General

You're assuming it's claimed as insurance fraud... and with taxes it's a 100 dollar difference. I do agree there is a risk though.
Edit: so thinking about that possibility I realized its sort of dumb for me to not just call up T-Mobile and see what they say about these sort if things (knowing they'd rather I give them NY money). I am legitimately thanking you for helping me solidify my paranoia to a point.

If you wanna be happy, keep your vibrant and wait a few months. I recommend getting the GN if you have the money because it has a better screen, but if you want you could wait until ICS is offically released and then buy it.
If you have been used to the iphone screen, or any good res LCD screen, youll notice issues with the display on our GS2.
I get the phones for free by price matching at best buy.thus makes them have no mail in rebate and no monthly additional fee.

I appreciate the opinion, although I am banking on "ignorance is bliss" when it comes to higher res screens. The expandable storage and currently only over seas options of the GN are why I am just going with the SGS2, but with sprint releasing one it is making me wonder if waiting would be smart. I would be happy with whatever I get, but I am pretty sick of my poor old vibrant.

Similar situation. I just traded some BMW work for a NIB SGS2 off of craigslist. Upgrade phone he didnt want.
Just contacted CS
I asked about what they said and all they could say is "maybe...". They can't/won't verify that I purchased the phone so if the person were to claim it was stolen I would be SOL (I have read about a guy who got the seller in trouble in a similar situation with Sprint, but I don't want to go off something like that).
I guess I just have to re-budget 600 instead of 500.
why not just print the page ur phone is advertised on ? if its ebay the guy would have to setup an account every time he wantes to scam someone

Pay with paypal. If the seller claims insurance fraud Paypal will get you your money back (may take time while they investigate but they will get it). Ebay is safe to buy from with all the fraud protection especially when you pay with paypal. DON"T DO IT ON CRAIGSLIST!!!
Don't wait for the Blaze, trust me, just get the SGSII or GN.
FYI, T-Mobile doesn't make money off handsets. When will people learn this. They make money off the monthly service. They are a SERVICE company, NOT a phone manufacturer. Go ahead and ask any question you want. In fact, T-Mobile prefer you have your own phone so they don't have to subsidize you!

The last time i bought my galaxy 4g first series from someone advertising on craigslist, brand new phone but when i brought it home and try to use, the phone mic never worked. I called samsung and they told me to ship it to them and I received my phone back within 5 business days. They fixed it for free and even paid for overnight shipping.

Why would Amazon be doing this? Is it just because the Nexus is coming out?
Well anyone who has friends thinking about Sprint looks like now is the time
Damn, I got my white e4gt for $99 a month ago. Well, eventual savings pale in comparison to the monthly rate. I do admit, it is a steal.
I wouldnt mind getting a nexus s for a penny, but I'm all out of upgrades. My guess is Amazon is dumping their Wimax inventory phones because sprint is moving to LTE.
I got mine for a penny back in November. Amazon randomly has sales where they sale Sprints 4G phones for a penny.
Not for upgrades, sadly. Just checked. New customers only. Makes me sad that people who haven't given Sprint a penny have all the best offers, while the loyal customers (been with Sprint since '99) are left in the dust.
I been with sprint like 10 years too. I got this phone for a penny. I closed my originl line and opened a new 1 and got it ^^ #WIN!

Upgrade fee is the same as an activation fee.
As for pricing on new lines, it usually is only third parties that offer better deals for new line vs upgrades, which makes sense because they get paid more from Sprint on a new line. Corporate does it sometimes, usually only on eol devices as a way to clearance them out. Like it or not, every carrier spends more money to attract subs than they do to keep the ones they already have.

I sincerely need to thank the OP here. I bought mine this past Thursday for $49.99, which considering that Sprint charges $199 with the 2 yr contract, thought it was a fantastic deal. I got my phone on the mail yesterday night and still have to activate it, but when I saw this thread today, I called Amazon and told them that I wanted to have a price match as I had purchased this thing less than 3 business days ago. Long story short, they agreed and I am getting $49.98 back...
I am one happy camper right now
Thanks OP!
Amazon has all of the Sprint WiMax devices for sale at 1-cent a piece, new customers or new lines only. If you ask me, it's because of A) They have an abundance of WiMax devices in stock and they know WiMax is going to be fazed out and don't want a surplus or B) Their Sprint sales have taken a slump. Plus, remember that a deal on a phone for a consumer may lead to increased accessories with with the purchase.
My contract is up on May 15th, and now Verizon is charging $30 bucks to upgrade!! WTF??? I'm looking to change to ATT (HTC ONE X) or prepaid as I am not going to give these fookers anymore money. I'm so tired of corporate greed. They say this because it is to "provide customers with the level of service and support they have come to expect." ???? Really? whenever I go into my local verizon store, they ask me about new phones and my newest roms. I'm so pissed right now at them.
As far as I can remember Verizon has always charged a 30 dollar fee..... they waived my last upgrade fee though because the lady messed up.
Sent from my Incredible 2 using Tapatalk
Just read an article that said this is a new fee and starts on April 22. Apparently, in addition to data limits, this is a new fact of life. Sad. Might be time to shop around again though.
If only they knew how right they are with the "provide customers with a level of service and support they have come to expect from Verizon"... Over the years big red has become so greedy, I actually do expect a level of fees and charges that make absolutely no sense. I think the $30 this time might be for the Vaseline... Lol.

I usually have pretty good luck when calling customer service, and emailing them, but all I keep hearing from them is "blah blah blah". I emailed the director of customer service and the East Coast Regional manager, both have yet to get back to me. They keep saying how everyone else does it, they are 6 dollars cheaper, they have smartphone workshops, and it helps them with serving the customer better. The only thing they are serving is lining their pockets! I WILL go to ATT and get the ONE X, if they keep this up! My company waives the activation fee, so I don't have to pay that either. Greedy Bastards!
Guys as a few of you know I work for Verizon in sales. The $30 fee being added to upgrades is new. The other fees that you are referring to. The 30 being waived for early upgrades it's a fee that is done in stores to cover cost. alot of stores don't do this fee.
Just for reference. Verizon it's the last of the big 4 carriers to implement this upgrade fee. I don't agree with it at all but changing carriers will only led to the same thing. It is like comparing a Apple to an apple wearing a orange costume.
Still it looks like this is going to bite big red in the ass. Sales will be affected. Verizon will feel the blow financially.

I never go to the stores to do anything. I deal with customer service exclusively because it is the only way I am ever able to get anything done. I doubt ill leave Verizon anytime soon. I still have unlimited data and I intend to keep it as long as I possibly can. I may pay out the ass but nobody else offers it that's worth a crap in my area. The customer service with Verizon isn't half bad anyway.

I have the unlimited data as well, but as most everyone knows, we "elite" customers get throttled (often!) because they offered to grandfather our plans and we took it. When I got my phone, music and netflix streamed without a hiccup, now because I'm not a "tiered" customer, I get throttled (and labeled as an "excessive use" customer).
The point; you either get it from one end or the other, either way they're going to stick it to their customers because we all want smartphones and they know they can plug us along the way for it. Atleast here, we can work together to screw them back!

Wait, is this to upgrade at any time? Or just early upgrade?
I dont think I have been ever charged to upgrade anything, but I have been charged to activate lines in the past (30 bucks)
I know they charge early upgrade fee, which is fine to me I guess as I dont really upgrade often.
http://gizmodo.com/5901023/no-more-free-phone-upgrades-verizons-30-fee-starts-april-22nd
No More Free Phone Upgrades: Verizon’s $30 Fee Starts April 22nd
On April 22nd, Verizon will begin charging a $30 upgrade fee when existing customers buy a new phone on a new contract. It's the sad end of the free upgrade era.
FYI: if you look on eBay you can find new phones for the same price as buying one on contract. I was looking at Galaxy Nexus phones a month ago and you can find the CDMA version easily for 250-300 or right now the Rezounds are going for 150-200.
Does it suck to pay $30 for an upgrade? Yeah it does but I probably wont shift to a new carrier because I'm on a loyalty plan, getting an employee discount AND have my unlimited data grandfathered. I'll deal with paying the $30 every two years.
zax10 said:

One thing about the upgrade fee is that some of the other carriers are talking about not even letting people upgrade.

You initially save ~$350 upon signing a 2yr agreement, then pay $200 for the device. But, when you pay for it off contract, you pay $550+ and still pay for a phone plan, you're just not locked in.
Now think about it, if you cancel the plan with a contract phone, you pretty much just pay the $350, which in the end adds up to the off contract price (the ETF gets lower, the longer you're in the plan, which in the end is even cheaper). But with an off-contract phone, you can just cancel without an ETF.
So if my logic is correct (please correct me if I'm wrong), why are so many people against signing a 2yr contract with Sprint or another wireless carrier?
I too wonder the same thing. You end up paying an extra $200-250 over the life of the contract.
Cause their stupid ?
Sometimes people just aren't any good with their money, and unwilling to have the patience required to wait it out. They would rather pay a premium for "freedom".
I had the original sero for over 5 years. Just recently imho phones are at the point (sg2) where it is worth the extra $20 to me to own one. Otherwise I kept renewing my contract so they couldn't surprise sex my bill.

Off contract, terms of service can change and you go with them. Under contract you are locked in at least for the life of the deal.
I buy all my phones off ebay or craigslist for around $200 - $250 within a month or so after they come out. I have no contract, and paid the same price as someone who signs a contract to get a discount. I get a new phone every 3 - 6 months, which beats having to wait 2 years, and I have a lot of leverage with Sprint because I have been with them for 12 years, and anytime Im not happy, I just tell them to cancel my contract. Its funny how the problem gets resolved when I threaten to leave.
Here is a list of some of the phones I have bought on craigslist: Epic 4g ($175 2 months after released), nexus S 4g ($220 the month it released), Evo 3D ($175 2-3 months after release), Epic Touch ($225 a month after release), 32G iPhone 4S ($225, yes 225 the month it was released)
Before the E4GT I had rarely owned any phone longer than a year and even that was stretching it. I'm a gadget freak, I love new toys and I live my life in a manner that allows me to enjoy them from time to time without putting myself in a financial pinch. I guess the trade off is that I'll keep a car until it's falling apart rather than buy a new one every few years like most people I know. Tech devices, unlike cars, are really sort of over the hill after 2years and I don't like being stuck with old technology.
Also, for me it isn't about not wanting to sign a new contract with Sprint, I've been with them so long and will likely continue with them into the foreseeable future that it isn't an issue. It really is just the wait between upgrades. I dislike having limitations on the ability to stay current therefore I remove them by ensuring I have the money to get what I want, when I want .. within means of course. lol
And for the record, I really wish we could leave off with the comments like "their stupid" (please make note of correct spelling before calling other people stupid, it's they're, not their). That never lends itself to mature discussion and really just reflects poorly on the person using it. Surely you can pull something more agreeable from your vocabulary but if not, there's always an online thesaurus just a click away.

I call BS on the iPhone @ $225. Prove it!
Those phones will go for $500+ with good ESNs.
The best phone that my service provider offers is still the CDMA Hero... Unless you want to go with iPhone (whew no lightening from the sky). So i bought E4GT from ebay for cheaper than they would offer with a contract anyway.

I don't get the premise or math the first two posters are using. Assuming a $550 off-contract price vs. a $200 + $350 ETF combo for doing a 2-yr stint, where does the "stoopid peeple pay $250" come from. Service rates don't change whether you did a contract or not so what gives?
I came to Sprint in June 2009 for the Palm Pre, switching to an OG EVO in June 2010. Fed up with how Gingerbread totally swallowed up memory on the EVO (causing it to refuse to do anything if it dropped below 10% free space) and after banging my head against the wall for 4 months trying to resolve the issue, I threw down the full $500 for an E4GT in October 2011 and never looked back.
I may've been able to finagle an upgrade price due to the TOS shens Sprint was pulling at the time, but that would've required me to recommit until October 2013 to a phone already 6 months old internationally on a carrier that had been charging my a $10 premium for 4G that I've never used with a tech that was being abandoned in favor of a flavor that may take years to arrive. FTS!
I'm now off contract and am free to go where I want NOW. Too bad all the other carriers are so expensive, but at least they have decent speeds and coverage. It's just not worth the extra $300+ per year they'd cost. Sigh.

Cost would be the same if you pay $350 ETF, but how many people do? Why on earth would you sign a contract factoring the $350 termination fee in?
Let's not forget that using an upgrade triggers the $36 activation fee as well. Conversely, tax is significantly higher when buying off contract (just about identical to the activation fee, so i guess its a wash lol).

They have always waved that fee for me when I upgrade. Been with Sprint for 11 years.
If you do your timing right as far as early upgrades, etfs, etc, you can easily game the system and save money staying on contract. Even the ceo of TMobile has actually admitted contract subsidies are a loss for the companies, but no carrier wants to be the first to get rid of them.

Waive the fee just for asking. For four phones.
Ohhhh noes my phone is out of date and...... STILL WORKS. But i continue to pay premiums and stay out of contract so when fees go up as they inevitably do you pay even more.
Cause 200pts in a benchmark or 30 minutes of theoretical battery life is total worth it /sigh
I got an e4gt cause it simply is the best phone, has been the best phone for years and will survive its many years of life in my hands. Had a rumor2 for 2 years, was it super fresh awesome ? No but it's a phone not a status icon.
Moving phones every 3-6 months just shows lack of knowledge and poor habits. Rates will never lower they will only increase, going month to month is a stupid idea unless you plan on leaving the carrier.
My whole family got 4 e4gts for 0.01 on the Amazon deal and we split a family plan that is reasonable to the sero500 we had.

When was the last time they did this for you? Sprint has taken a hard line on this matter and has been shown to be completely unwilling to waive activation fees as part of the recent "nickel and dime" movement. It has basically become a $36 surcharge to every discounted phone you buy.
My plan (SERO 500) has automatically waived activation fees as a plan feature. I was hit with it when I bought an iPhone last year, and no arguing, premier status, or escalating helped.

My E4GT is on Boost.
New E4GT w/ bad esn from ebay: $250
Flash to Boost: $30 (didn't want to mess it up myself)
Boost 3G Data at $0.35/day: $10.50/month
Calls at $0.10/minute: $10/month, if that (I don't need to talk much on my personal phone)
Google Voice for unlimited texting: $0/month
So I pay roughly $20 a month for a great phone, with 3G data and texting. I can change phones whenever I want, moved from a Evo 4G, same Boost set up to E4GT, a while ago. Sold the Evo to subsidize the E4GT. This method has worked well for me the last few years and I can live with the 3G data. Now that Boost will have 4G, hopefully our resourceful community will figure out a way to get the E4GT on it. I just don't see the need to be locked into a contract and pay $60+ a month for talk plus data fees, but to each their own.

What he said.
But I don't buy that often and I don't do quite that well. I take good care of my phones so when I sell it its clean and like new meaning I will sell if for only a bit less (or sometimes more) than I paid for it. I get to change phones when I want.
So lately I am seeing a lot of questions about where to buy a Galaxy Note 2 for the best deal without a contract. I currently have worked for Sprint for the past six years and have a lot of good loopholes and information on how to use the system to my advantage. I would like to share some information with you to help anybody who needs help getting their upgrades early, or anything else I can do to help.
So now even if you do not have an upgrade currently there is a way to get it early so you can pay the upgrade price, plus a little more but it will still be much cheaper than buying it outright. Here are the steps you need to follow to do this correctly.
You must call and ONLY call the retentions department aka cancellations. I have a direct number to this department that leads you directly to a person, so you do not have to listen to any automated system. You will have to dial this number 1-888-273-9460, next explain to the rep that you are in need of a new phone because you are having many issues with your current device. Tell them you would like to see if you are eligible for a "buyup" option and how much it will cost to do so. A buyup is an early upgrade that is basically buying out the rest of your contract to get your upgrade early. 90% of all customers I have done this for are eligible for this buyup from anywhere to $50-$150 depending on how far away you are from your upgrade. If eligible, you can ask them to go ahead and apply the buyup and the fee will be billed onto your account so you can pay it off later in payments if you like.
Now it takes usually about 20 minutes to 24 hours for the upgrade to become live on your account depending on how busy the department is because there is a department where these reps are manually pushing the upgrades through, usually I can get it pushed through for about 20 mins to an hour, simply ask them to expedite the buyup and tell them you are currently in a Sprint store waiting to pick up your new device.
So now you have an early upgrade for around $50-$150 and now you can upgrade to the Note 2 for $299.99. Many Sprint locations also have an in store Buyback program. This is where you can trade in your old device to receive money off your in store purchase. This is for those who do not want to sell their old phone on ebay or craigslist, the discount varies from phone models of course, but you can trade in an S2 for about $88, or you can bring in a bunch of older phones if you have them to help with the overall cost.
There is another way to receive some money off towards your bill if you are very close to upgrading. If you call the same department I listed earlier, you can tell them you are interested to hear some information about a Loyalty credit on your account. If you are eligible this is basically a program where Sprint will give you $50-$100 credit per line on your account in exchange for extending that lines contract for 1 more year. But if you are close to your upgrade already this is technically only a few months more since you are upgrading soon anyways. Now this will not always work but if you ask politely or get a nice rep you can usually always get this credit applied to your bill.
If you have any questions or need help, just PM me for info
Great information! Now I just used my upgrade to get the gs3....... I can do this right? jk lol I'm screwed lol guess I might have to just buy out right :/

They do require that in store, but we talked to retentions and they let us buyout the upgrade with no trade in.
I had my upgrade available and the Sprint store employee was having a hard time figuring out how to upgrade me without changing my sero plan. He sold me the device for the upgrade price and then did an esn swap. I didn't realize till later i had saved the activation fee and because it was a esn swap and I still have a upgrade eligibility on the same line.

I'm pretty settled on wanting the GNote2 as my next device.. did I do a mistake by contacting/online chat earlier today? I just asked the rep if I was eligible for an early upgrade. Person told me I'm eligible for upgrade prices at 6/1/13, instead of 10/2013 lol.
Just tried this...rep said my Buyup was $275....They would give me 98 for my Galaxy2 then the Note 2 at 299. So my out of pocket would be $476.
I guess it is better then the new outright price.
im gonna have to try this since im not eligible until april
Sprint wanted to buy back my 16gb S3 for 128$ instead, I sold it to the gf for 320$ so I could get the Note 2 on upgrade.
.:Sent from my Sprint Galaxy Note II:.
Those that are inquiring about this and getting actual buyout numbers would you please post how long you have left on your contract?
Might help the rest of us get an idea of what our buyout would be without calling. Like myself, I have 1 year left on my contract and will probably try to call tomorrow to see what my buyout would be. Will report back if I get the time to make the call.
For me my ETF is $240, I figure I could get $350 for my S3 currently and move to Verizon.
So
240+299=$539
$539-$350=$189 out of pocket
I am trying to tough it out with Sprint though because if I go to VZW that still leaves my wife with Sprint for another year or until I pay her ETF as well. Hoping for a decent buyout price and maybe a loyalty credit to sway me to stick around.
My brother bought out his upgrade in oct right before the note 2 came out. his upgrade was elegible in may and he paid 100. ( I did it for him, as he is on our account, so I know this to be accurate)

Your signature says retailer. So is that corporate or "retailer".
Your numbers may be a little off. Just wanted to point out what I've been seeing.
The UpgradeNOW program starts at $200. It would be foolish to start at $150. ETF for a smart phone is $350. No way they would let you. You have to be xx months in. If you go into the store, they can do it for you.
Loyalty Credit is at the reps discretion. Starts at $25 and they don't always require you to extend your contract. Why? Extend for 1 year, upgrade later on and poof! They just gave you money for nothing. They promise you $xx for xx months. They don't follow through and then tell you, you're not eligible for that offer. The offer has to show. Misleading reps. I even asked a "research" team to listen to the phone call where the rep promised to me and I confirmed that if I called back it would be available. Lies.
Buyback program is next to nothing in most cases. Original Epic and EVO's are $32-$38 or so. Easily sell for double that and get cash. Older phones are worth nothing. I wouldn't even bother. They have to work and can not have water damage.
Anyone that's ventured this far onto these forums are more than likely to resell on CL or in the Marketplace. Not trying to butt heads or say you're info it wrong, just pointing out some facts. Sprint has come around in their favor and waiting your 22 months is becoming a major option. They took away all the good loopholes.
