Hey. I have 2.3.3 installed, and finally have root access, with the help of htcsupertool3. But I do not get S-OFF, so I can not install other ROMs.
I think I've tried most of the guides in here ...
Can anyone come up with advice?
Thank you in advance!
This is the preferred method of obtaining S-OFF and is what most people here will point you towards. be sure to read it carefully as it requires you to downgrade from 2.3.
Do I really have to downgrade to 2.2 to get s-off? Is there an easier way?
Not that I am aware of. That method is the best way to go as it is safe and proven. There might be other ways to do it, but could brick your phone (Visionary comes to mind).
Ok. Thank you. Must read a bit before I try. Will try not to brick my phone...
But after that I can use whatever ROM I want?
Correct. After that method you will have a custom recovery installed and will be able to flash ROMs to your phone. Additionally, you may want to read up on using the Desire Z hboot (if you have a G2) in order to use some of the newer Sense ROMs.

I have read multiple guides around the internet about rooting my HTC Desire Z. Hutchinson 3UK network. I am unsure on what method to use, how to downgrade etc.
I do not want to run a risk of rooting my phone as I bought it outright for £300. I also want to know if I can unroot and perm-root.
The reason I want to root is to overclock it, is it possile to use 2.2 firmware on a root?
Could you please post or link a guide that will provide all of the information I need and that is fairly simple to understand as I am new to the whole Android/rooting business.
Many thanks.
My Android version is 2.2.1 and am hoping to use this version as I love sense but only want a root on this to overclock.
My baseband version is 12.28e.60.140fU_26.04.02.17_M2
Build number and software number is 1.72.405.2
With a 1.72 ROM you will need to downgrade before you can Root.
The instructions in the Wiki (http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/index.php?title=HTC_Vision#Introduction) include links to the downgrade instructions.
The recommended root method uses GFREE which will SIM-Unlock the phone while you are rooting.
Yes you can unroot, the instructions for that are in the Wiki as well.
You can absolutely use a 2.2 ROM while rooted, if you are only looking to overclock you can just install an overclock friendly kernel after you are rooted, though you may want to look at a custom ROM because you will have to wipe when you downgrade from 1.72.
Good luck!
Ok, is unrooting a simple process because I am covered on warranty and do not to want to simply lose it, I need a backup. My phone is already unlocked so that is fine there.
How long does the rooting take? Because it all looks very confusing entering the code etc, am I likely to mess anything up which results in a brick?
Sent from my HTC Vision using XDA App
The process of rooting via wiki method took me about 15 minutes, but the setup of adb and installing drivers will add additional time if you are unfamiliar with it. Usually if you enter in a wrong character in adb, the command won't go through (incorrect paths, etc), but just be careful and you will be fine. Read each step carefully.
Unrooting was a little difficult for me (I did this first to send my first G2 in for warranty) as that was my first experience tying my phone to the pc, but it is very simple and straightforward with the instructions.
Yeah i did rooting with the wiki but sometimes you'll get confused on how to do it. If u dont understand ask here or search the internet. Always happy to help ^_^!
Downgrading
It says check your INFOCID. How do I perform this check?
Sorry for not knowing anything..
the link I am asking about is provided by the wiki: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=905261
hey there,
just got a desire yesterday. currently have a rooted hero, so im not exactly a beginner, but im completely stumped on how to root my desire.
its o2 branded with hboot 0.93 on 2.2
cannot use unrevoked, it comes up with a 'failed to unlock nand flash?' error.
i believe this is because it needs to be downgraded first
ive followed the goldcard tut, as well as the downgrade tut
found on this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=696189
however, i get a 'main version is older' error when trying to flash the .zip created by the downgrade.
really want to do this, so any help would be appreciated.
http://revolutionary.io/
But read documentary page very carefully before doing anything!
thanks for that link.
i had seen that previously but saw the public beta, and the warnings and didnt think i should mess with it!
looking at the documentation, it says that it supports the desire with hboot 0.93.
is it safe to assume that because my desire has 0.93, that conventional methods wont work, and that only 'revolutionary' will?
revolutionary is absolutely safe, used is MANY times and so have a million others.
instead of rooting, just use revolutionary to S-OFF, then flash recovery during the process (it asks you if you want to), then backup your ROM, do a full wipe and then flash anyone that you want, or flash superuser.zip to root. either way is good
revolutionary worked great, thanks alot it was just what i was after.
will be downloading a custom rom now
just discovered that the earpiece is messed up, so will be needing to replace that
i suppose it gives me a reason to open it up lol
personally I'd send to HTC, that way you know it was done correctly
if the phone was new, i would.
but its used and cant be bothered with the hassle
the part is cheap, and when it comes to things like changing earpieces etc, i find it easy
Sorry for asking this but I come from Desire HD and things seem more straight forward there in regards to root and custom roms.
I see that WFS is rootable but then S-OFF has not been broken yet. What's the difference with XTC-Clip then?
From what I understood, the only way to root WFS is XTC-CLIP which allows you to have root access, install custom ROM and recovery but it will not allow you to install radio and kernel? Please correct me if I'm wrong.
My main requirement is to be able to install apps on sd and use apps like titanium backup to freeze/remove bloatware. What do I need for this?
I see that I can upgrade to latest 2.3.5 since it's not available for my region. If I do so, will it still be rootable or I will lose this and then need to downgrade like with DHD?
Again I apologise for asking all these but you see I follow a complete forum on DesireHD and I don't have time reading here as well. I want to complete this as fast as possible for my wife.
EDIT: Oh now I see, XTC-Clip is hardware. So apart from using this, WFS is non-rootable unless S-Off is achieved?

If you make your phone s-off with the XTC clip you can root your phone or flash anything you want..
You have to be s-off to remove bloatware by HTC.
You can upgrade to 2.3.5 and it will still be rootable if you s-off it..
Thanks. However, I'll need to buy that clip which I don't intend to right now so for me, it's not rootable until S-OFF is managed. Correct?
But there's a temproot http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1296916 here..
You can find a shop near you that has the clip and unlock it.
Hey everybody, I’m new to rooting so I have a couple of questions which I hope you'll help me figure out. I’m currently running a DZ with 2.2.1 build number 1.82 and I understand that the best rooting method is in the wiki?
Secondly, should I do the ota update to 2.3.x before I start, I guess it should also update the radio and hboot. Is it relevant at all, maybe it’s worth having a newer radio or hboot, or maybe the 2.3 rooting method is safer?
Also do I really need the eng-hboot, because it’s an optional procedure and if I do something wrong at that point I'm guessing I would brick the phone? I know that G2 users used to install the DZ hboot to run Sense ROMs and since I have a DZ maybe I don’t need it?
Last thing is the recovery. I noticed that some of you are using the 4ext recovery, but the guide says to install CWM. Maybe I can install 4ext or should I stick with CWM?
Oh and I think should copy/paste the ADB commands to avoid mistypes.
Sorry for the long post Any replies would be much appreciated. Thanks.
So you're running Froyo? If so, do not upgrade to 2.3!
What differs the ENG-HBOOT from the STOCK one is that ENG has more functions than the STOCK counterpart. In our case, an example is "FASTBOOT" which allows us to flash Kernels/ROM's. That could prove helpful from recovering from certain "bricks".
Also, 4EXT is the best recovery our phones can have right now. It has no issues, is faster and has a lot more functions when compared to CWM. For the time being you can flash CWM if you don't feel safe about it. From there you can choose.

There is no 2.3 root method. The root method for 2.3 is to downgrade.
Don't know if Hboot makes much of a difference. I'm still on the original Hboot my phone came with (purchased December 2010) and never known it to make a difference with anything.
You can always flash a different radio later. All in all, there is no reason to install the OTA before you root.
Appreciate your answers. Yup, I’m still running Froyo, but I would still need to downgrade to 1.34 to get root. And I thought that maybe the 2.3 downgrade method is safer, because it’s the latest one.
So basically what you are saying is don’t do the ota, 4ext is better and using eng-hboot gives more flexibility when flashing and incase of certain bricks.
Again thanks for the help guys and hopefully my DZ will be enjoying root this weekend
hey i just got a droid incredible from my sister (not going to use it as a phone) and i would like to root it and flash a custom ROM, im sorta know about rooting and flashing but i keep looking for ways to root this phone and its way difficult for me. i am not about to use adb or android sdk for some reason they never work with methods for my other phones. not sure how to get to recovery just goes to a hboot screen which i see is normal. a lot of the links are broken on methods to root i see that unrevoked dosent work with 2.3.4. and im really frustrated with this phone. it has 2.3.4. S-ON and hboot 1.0.7 i don't know how to do the radio stuff please help.

The only way to root 2.3.4 is to unlock your bootloader using htcdev unlock, then use fastboot (an android sdk program) to flash a custom recovery. Once you have the recovery installed, you can flash a rom of your choosing. There are no one click options available since the inc got gingerbread. It requires a bunch of steps, but isnt all that hard. Here is a working guide if you decide to take the plunge. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1506258. Note that you do not need s-off to flash a rom, but you do need s-off to flash radios, hboots, and splash screens.
