[Q] Regarding Titanium Backup - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-T989

I was wondering if anyone knows the answer to the below question.
Typically, before you switch ROM's you should always make a nandroid of your stock ROM or whatever ROM you are currently running. You should also backup all user apps in Titanium Backup before flashing a new ROM so the apps can easily be restored afterward.
Can this process also be done in reverse? Lets say you are running a custom ROM for a few weeks and you decide you want to go back to your original stock nandroid that you created prior to flashing the custom ROM. Could you make a backup of all your user apps, then boot into CWM Recovery, do a superwipe, restore your nandroid and then restore the apps you just backed up in Titanium Backup?
I hope my question makes sense. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

If I understood your questions right my answer will yes, as long as you're rooted. Other than that it wouldn't be possible

Thanks, yes I am rooted. I made a nandroid a couple weeks ago and wanted to flash a new ROM today but didn't want to make another nandroid before doing so. I was just going to backup my apps in Titanium before flashing the new ROM.
If I don't like the new ROM I would switch back and restore my nandroid but wanted to be able to restore my apps through Titanium to make sure they are up to date. Sounds like this is possible. Thank you very much for your response.

If you're restoring a nandroid, you don't need to superwipe. A nandroid is a complete image of your system at the time (everything down to the kernel) so there's no need to wipe anything with a flashable, the system will do that for you. Only need to superwipe with new install of a ROM. But yes, you can do that, although if you want to save SMS and call logs and such, it might just be faster (and easier) to make another nandroid.

Awesome, ok I didn't know that I could just flash and restore my nandroid without wiping first, thank you.
I actually found an extremely useful program that I have been using called SMS Backup +. It backs up all your SMS, MMS and Call Logs into your Gmail account. When you switch to a new ROM you just click on restore and all your SMS messages and call logs are back again. Very very useful program. Here's the link.

Changing roms

I tried searching for this, but the app seems to have some limitations. Please forgive if this is a repost. I have been on my 3rd rom for 2 weeks now but want to check out another new release. Long story short, I don't want to lose anything installed or subsequent app data. How can I back up and restore all of the non-rom data and have all of the new goodies of the new rom laid on top of the great app/personal data/settings?
Is this a dumb question?

Thanks both for feedback. So I can back up on titanium to sd then wipe all the cache etc, flash new rom, restore?

This is a fool proof list:
1. Titanium Backup all apps and data
2. Boot into clockworkmod and wipe data 3x
3. Flash new rom
4. Download titanium backup from market and install backups.
Thank you good sir.

Just out of curiosity, as long as you wipe the three things in recovery, will restoring old data on top of a new ROM from TitaniumBackup ever cause problems?
I've heard some people recommend not doing that, but never really gave any explanation.
Installing from titanium backup won't cause problems as long as you don't mess with system apps.

[Q] How Do I Restore Data After Gingerbread Install?

Hi,
I just flashed the McSenseless ROM and I can't remember how to best restore my data. I did perform a Nandroid backup before I flashed the ROM.
Thanks,

You should not restore data from a nandroid to a different rom, it can goof all types of stuff. They make apps that backup data.
Should have used titanium backup or something like that first.

What type of data do you want to restore? Nandroid just makes an image of your old system that can be used only to restore everything just how it was.

Not sure what I was thinking when I performed the Nandroid backup. Just wondering if there was a way to get my messages back. App data isn't a biggie for me.

Well do a nandroid of your current rom. Go back to your old rom with the nandroid you said you have. Download an app to back up your SMS make. Go back to the nandroid of the rom you want to use and redownload the app you used to backup your SMS and then restore.
I know is a lot of work but if yours SMS are that important then you will do it.
Good luck my friend

Yeah if sms is all you wanna save handcent SMS offers an account that backs them up. Also you can save a vcard of your contacts with most contact managers and easily restore contacts that way. Good luck!

I'm using gmail for my contacts, so they synch'ed immediately; not a problem. The sms messages aren't that important. Just thought there might be a way. If I decide that I need anything I'll do what Kratz17 proposed.
Thanks everyone. Really appreciate the insights!

Do a Nandroid first then you can do whatever you want and then always be able to safely go back.

Is this statement true?...the part about nandroid restoring the rom too
blindfusion said:
I think the main difference is that nandroid will restore everything back the way it was through recovery. With Titanium Backup, you can backup your apps+data and restore them if you flash a new ROM. So like if you upgrade to the latest version of CM6 or Liberated, you can carry your apps over. If you restore the nandroid, it will restore the old ROM too.

Nandroid makes it so that you can restore everything to the way it was before you went flash crazy.
Titanium backup is for backing up apps+data so that when you flash a new rom you don't have to take 5 million years installing and trying to remember all your apps.

+1 This. Nandroid will restore your old STOCK rom if that's what you backed up. TiBu is meant for apps+data.
Ok...I backed everything up just in case even my imei. I have yet to brick a phone but hey, you can never be too safe.

Need help from pro rom installers!! :)

I just rooted my phone using this method:

Now i want to install my first ROM. Is there a way for me to backup all my apps and my current stock ROM 4.0.4?
Also, whats a good stable jelly bean rom u guys recommend me install?

If you're going from ICS to JB you should let your phone restore from Play automatically so you don't install any incompatible apps or data. Otherwise, Titanium Backup or ROM Toolbox Pro are both awesome for things, RTP just does a bit more.

You can back it up using whatever recovery you're running. CWM and TWRP both do it fine.

Noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo! Stay away from that stuff and learn to do things the "hard way" because it will help you in the future. Using CWM or TWRP is not difficult at all. Please learn about your phone and ways to fix it before going forward. After being on several different devices and seeing the nonsense that goes on in here from people not taking time to learn there device.
Read up on kernels, adb, restoring all that good stuff... It's worth it

Transfer everything to a new S3

Hey XDA,
I will be receiving a new S3 from T-Mobile tomorrow and was wondering if there are any ways to transfer everything from your old device to your new as if it were the same. My phone is currently rooted and running CM10. Will this cause any problems? Looking for the most efficient and error-free way possible, thank you so much for all your help!

Meaning the full backups I would do in TWRP right?
Would this cause a problem though if I did this backup and used the exact same file to restore onto a new device? I heard it didnt.
Thanks!

Is your current phone the same as the phone you're getting tomorrow? If they are exactly the same, nandroid is the best way.
+Cool story, bro!
+The "Thanks" you get from me is not just thanks, but can be laughing, props, +1, and so on
Just to be clear, only restore the data portion of the nandroid.
And this is only because you are going to remain on cm10.
If you are going to a different version, or different base, you're best off only restoring certain items, such as contacts.
Titanium backup is also highly recommended.

Presuming you know what nandroid and titanium back up do and also both require you to be rooted.
I would suggest nandroid if your old and new phones are of the same make.
Else use titanium backup back up only the "user" apps and transfer the Titanium Backup folder into your new phone and then restore.
I do the same and frankly for me it is trouble free.
Hope this helps.

Yeah, I will be getting the exact same phone. I just need to flash and root it up once I get it. Will different basebands cause a problem or does that need to be the same as well?
Baseband is your modem which is separate from everything else. It is generally not backed up and you dont have to worry about it.
