Ok, i know this is a question in the dev section but i think it belongs here, if mods think different then please move.
As the title says really - if i choose not to try the S-OFF - will i be left behind later on down the line with regard to custom ROM's??
If i bricked my phone the wife would go bonkers, so i am really wary at the moment with trying it as there is a higher chance of bricking it. Anyhow thats a seperate issue..
So maybe some devs can answer my question??.. Am i at some point gonna have to take the plunge or is it more of a nice thing to have, more than a necessity?
Or is there likely to be a later version that has a lesser chance of bricking if does go wrong??
Cheers all for any replies..
I think that if a custom ROM requires S-OFF it will have a good reason, or the dev is being lazy.
Also HTC is very likely to plug the exploit that gives S-OFF at some point, if it's possible to do so.
Moved to Q&A as not development
You dont need a security unlocked device, there will be no diffrence apart from the fact you wont have any write access to the nand chip while the device is booted

Kool.. So more of a nice thing to have rather than a must!. Appreciate replies.. I will hold off doing it.

It really is a simple procedure though, its as easy as booting a live cd, connectiong your device and pressing enter

I do agree from what i have read, but for me personally the risk at this time is too much.. If anything did go wrong i would be kicking myself.
Maybe at a later date as i said if a more less risky version comes out.

No such thing. It's not the application that's risky, it's the procedure in general. You're in essence flashing the lowest level of your phone, if it fails the phone will be useless but the chance of it failing is almost negligible.
one thing i am willing to ask. does that mean that turning security to off, you do not need to pay for unlock codes? you can just turn s-off and flash a rom and it will unlock the phone?
sorry for the dumb question!
S-OFF won't sim unlock the phone.
A lot of people are flashing this without knowing what it does, which is just plain stupid. The risk is minimal, but there is a risk that it will totally brick the phone permanently. Nobody should flash it unless they want to use S-OFF for something. It'll also absolutely guaranteed to void the warranty, there's no way HTC will touch a phone if you return it with the S-OFF bootloader (though it is easy to remove).
At the moment it's most useful for devs, in order to test changes without the need for reboot/recovery/reboot.

no need for normal usage of the phone ... you can also do all without s-off ... with s-off you dont have to reboot everytime ...

Then I suggest you walk away and forget about the whole thing. If you really find it that hard then don't do it. All the people I know that go ita really hard end up bricking the device. Rooting is easy but yes bootloader unlock is very dangerous and by the sounds of things you are one person who needs to stay well away from the from that area. If this is the only device you have and can't afford another one then stop. But if you can risk it and buy a new one then carry on by all means but if something goes wrong don't go crying to everyone else trying to fix your phone as you have been warned the risks involved. They are
Bricking (killing) the device.
Breaking certain sections of the Rom or even device.
Over heating CPU
Lockups and reboots
Battery drain
Void warranty
Void insurance (not all)
Short curcuiting
Plus many more.
I just suggest just sticking to rooting ans stay away from the bootloader.
Use DooMLoRDs ZergRush easy rooting tool kit in the development section. That will root it and allow you to remove bloatware and more.
Regards
Blackwatch
P.S. I'm not trying to be nasty. I'm just being honest and letting you know and telling you my thoughts. Read up more about it and learn a bit more before rushing into things like this as like I said. I have seen many brick their devices through not knowing what they are doing or what it does. Even developers have bricked there devices. Talk to DooMLoRD and he will explain more

Yes, it looks like a very common question, but I used to own HTC-Wildfire once.
After installing custom ROMS, I have problems with battery malfunction. Untill now, I cannot fix it even if I brought a new battery.
I had purchased HTC One X, before I have found that the official ROM is not the best. I would like to try CUSTOM ROMS, but I'm afraid that it will make my mobile phone out of warranty.
However, I heard that after unlocking bootloader, we can lock it again and install an official ROM but the status of the phone will show " re-lock " instead of lock.
That means someone will know that I used to unlock it.
What do you think about this? Can I do it and also make it restore as untouched when my phone need fixing?
Thank you in advance.

It will show re-lock, and I guess this is the purpose.

Your phone will still be in warranty in case of any hardware defects however should you break your phone as a result of flashing firmware then HTC will not assist you.
Yes, I believe that ANY rooting (and therefore ROM changes) voids the warranty of ANY phone however there are ways of unrooting your phone so that it appears completely unrooted.
Here's one method that may work: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=900875
However if you use a program such as superoneclick, ginerbreak, etc then an unroot feature is often included.
I believe that these methods don't leave an obvious trace, thus allowing a warranty claim to be made.

That means if something wrong to my phone such as the screen is broken, I can still claim it, right?
If it is, I will begin to unlock my phone and install other ROM doubtlessly.

I had to send my HOX back to the shop because of a dodgy touchscreen. Of course, I had already installed ARHD so I was faced with the same issue. I reinstalled the proper RUU and relocked my bootloader. The shop accepted my RMA after finding the defect and told me that they had sent the phone to the HTC Service Center. So as of now the phone is wherever that is awaiting repair. The jury is still out as to whether they will investigate if the bootloader is relocked. I don't think it will be an issue, but I will report back as soon as I get word!
Cheers,
Mathieu
ps - I will change my signature as soon as I get my HOX back...
HTC will still honor warranty claims even if your phone was unlocked via HTCdev. The lcd on my One X decided that it would display the screen whenever it wanted to and not when I did. I called HTC and opened a ticket, shipped it to them, paid their slightly frustrating $20 USD handling fee, and now it's in repair with nothing else I need to pay.
This is with a unbranded HTCdev unlocked phone that had at least 4 different ROMs flashed as well as 2 kernels.
As far as your question of dodging the RE-LOCKED screen:
Until someone finds a way to S-OFF, we're stuck with it. But believe me that RE-LOCKED looks a whole lot better in HTC's eyes than TAMPERED.
If all you want to do is flash ROMs, just do it the HTC provided way.
Unless you manage to fry your phone by overclocking to 2.5ghz or overvolting, you'll be fine if the phone breaks.
Hi guys,
Just an update. I just received an email in which I was informed that my HOX has been repaired/replaced (I wonder which it is?). So either they didn't check the bootloader (or any secret log files of what has been installed) or they just didn't care. It would seem to have gone well...
Can anyone help me to root my Europe HTC One X phone please.
Also will it void my HTC warranty ?
I am not interested in unlocking the bootloader as i know this does void the warranty.
Thanks for any replies
At present you have to unlock via HTC-Dev.
That is the only way.
The only way to root the phone is by unlocking the bootloader, so unfortunately if you do not want to do this, you cannot root your phone.
I was worried I'd mess up and brick my phone whilst rooting, but everything worked OK.
Rooting the phone by unlocking the bootloader will void the warranty.
Thanks for the answers guys.
I will have to keep it stock then.
I am with vodaphone for the next 10-11 months so need to keep it stock for warranty purposes

I'd go for it.
Just read up beforehand. If anything does go wrong, you can always look here for support, it's quite hard to brick your phone now, and even if you do, there are ways to recover it.
Check out aphroditelikesme's (Cursed4Eva) video on YouTube about how to do it entitled 'Root the HTC One X - Part 1/2 - Unlocking the Bootloader' (I can't post links yet) it is very easy to follow. He also has a video on how to unroot the phone and lock the bootloader.
If you do decide to go ahead:
Watch, and re-watch the video
Prepare everything
Make sure you have about 20 minutes where you can work without being disturbed
Follow the video
Hi guys,
I have samsung note 2 N7100
Android version 4.1.2
I am just looking around and I see loads of stuff about rooting, I came from Apple iPhones coz they are **** now lol and i have jailbroken all my devices. Had my note 2 for few months now but I am worried if i root it I will loose my warranty and might mess up my phone....
I seen the tutorials and it looks really easy but lets say down the line I want to un-root my device, could I leave no trace of the device being rooted?
I had to replace my old note 2 and it was rooted i managed to un root it but the benefit was that I work in the phone shop and I replaced it.
SHOULD I ROOT THE DEVICE?
WHAT BENEFITS WILL I GET?
Cheers guy
p.s. love the community here!
Hi,
Even without root, the Note 2 is still beast.
But with all these customizations, tweaks, improvement going on in the development threads, it's a GO.
Plus, you can unroot easily anytime you have a computer.
Cheers!
First of all! Welcome to the family
Well here's what! Rooting your device is basically allowing your phone to run apps and do special operations that it cannot normally do and also flash custom roms. If anyone else can help with a reply that will be awesome. Just go through the step by step process in either this link: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1896696 or this one: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1923956.
For more understanding, watch videos on youtube on the terms: rooting, custom Rom and custom recovery. If anyone can help it would be appreciated!

Well it's upto you. You'd get a HELL lot more of options with a rooted devices than unrooted. Personally, I find absolutely no reason not to root, and it would be such a waste to not unlock the full potential of this beast. It's an awesome device as it is, but it's even awesome-er when your root

It's easy to remove all evidence of rooting if you ever need to. Still I don't think you should rush into it if your uncertain. There are benefits I've gained from rooting though nothing I couldn't live without. To some extent I've been rooting for so long it's just a habit now, I'm just used to having it, but even if I didn't have it on this phone I'd be happy with it.

If you know valid reason to root your device then root it, don't rush for fun or experiments. when you find some stuffs needs root that is must for you then go and root, but read couple of times before it.

Me neither. However it's a fact that a small number of units shipped will develop a fault. If you're going to put big money into a phone line the Note 2 then it's not unnatural to want assurance that you are going to have protection if you are one of the unlucky ones.

Warranty is always a question of time.
The advantage of rooting is difficult to explain to everyone who is doubting about that.
For me rooting is something that should not be necessary.
There are many users that will never use root access even when it is available.
But there are thoughts that root access will lead to problems or misuse.
For me root access is usefull in some cases. For example to install Whatsapp on tablets with wifi-only.
Not a question of advantages and disadvantages of Root OR how it is helpful
I mean to say You can claim warranty even you have device rooted with flash counter 0.
2 main reasons for me :
- Blocking ads
- backing up my entire phone.
You can't do that without root.
Now that my phone is rooted i've done other changes like installing the aosp camera to use photosphere and CWM to backup and install zip easier.
But I keep stock rom with stock kernel, with this phone there is no need to change it to my mind.
With root you can put any tiers application in the multi windows right?
You can also disable bloatware or freeze them with greenify.
The only thing is missing with is the undervolt settings. That's why I'm already in custom kernel/ROM.
But when 4.2.2 goes out I'll certainly go back stock ROM which i hope, will increase battery life.

Not in the good ole United States of America (but there is more too this?)
If you purchase a Samsung Galaxy Note II (or any other phone) from a Authorized Dealer, it comes with one year warranty and guarteneed warranty per terms of that dealers contract. If you unlock/root/flash, whatever, you break that contract because of something YOU did, not the Authorized Dealer, therefore, they are not responsible for it, YOU are.
Now, as someone that has unlocked/rooted/flashed MANY phones over the years, every set of instructions I have every read.....1. Explains the above first. 2. Immediately explains to read ALL the instructions first and understand them before you attempt anything. 3. Explains THEY are not responsible if you brick your phone. 4. They always give detailed instructions (or link to them) a. How to put it back to stock and b. Lastly, DO NOT TAKE PHONE BACK TO DEALER ROOTED!!!
Now, with that said, I (we) in America have T.E.P. (Total Equiptment Protection) that I pay $11.00USD a month. This insurance is in case I lose my phone, its stolen, I drop in bathtub, run over with car.............I pay a deductible ($150.00USD I think) and they give me a new phone.
Now, these are two different things. During the initial warranty period, If I have SDS, I take it back to Authorized Dealer, fix my s**t! After Warranty, period, I send it back to insurance company, pay deductible, and either they send you a new one OR send you a agreed upon compatable device!
Cheers!!!
For me rooting was a must for directory bind. As has been said blocking ads is essential greenify good and the increase Volume mod was also a god send.
However on the downside I've lost sky go.
I rooted my Samsung day 2 and wouldn't turn back. Iv undervolted getting 2 days out of my battery. Root is awesome.
