I just switched from a GS2 to a Nexus. I love the more natural colors on the Nexus, while the colors are amazingly bright on the GS2, they just look too saturated and cartoony to me. So the tamer colors on the Nexus are a nice change.
What isn't quite as nice is the overall brightness of the screen just seems lacking a little compared to my iPhone 4 and GS2.
I usually run my phones at half brightness, and while it isn't dull by any means, it just seems like the screen should be brighter.
Still the best screen I've used on a mobile device though.
I'd also like to add that I don't think the lack of brightness is really a bad thing, just curious about it.
The GS2 had a ridiculously bright screen and the colors were just so saturated and cartoony, a great screen, but I prefer the more natural, modest look of the Nexus. I found the GS2 screen to be hard to look at for some reason, something about the high contrast made it weird on my eyes.
I find the Nexus to have sharper text than the iPhone 4 I have, but the iPhone 4 still has the "cleanest" screen I've seen.

So turn the brightness up higher than half brightness. Why does it have to be at half brightness, when you obviously prefer a brighter screen? Set it to whatever you prefer, rather than what it says is half brightness.

haha, well...I suppose you do have a point. I guess I'm just used to the iPhone 4 and GS2 being brighter at half brightness. There's something about the battery conservative in me that finds it hard to break that 50% mark on brightness, although 80% of the time I'm near a charger anyway.
I'm starting to think that Google calibrated this screen to be easy on the eyes, especially for reading text. The natural colors and tempered brightness just seem deliberate. I do understand that the Amoled Plus on my GS2 contributed to the colors/brightness being so in your face, but calibration can change a lot. Again the GST is very nice, but just a little too much, the GS2 wasn't that easy on the eyes.
As much as I like the brightness of the other devices, I find reading on this phone to be a pleasure. I was more just curious about the brightness on this phone, not even sure it's really a preference just an observation. It's early, I hope I'm making sense.

but.... not all phone's brightness meter are the same... half way up on phone x is probably not the same has it is on phone y...
Yeah good point..
I agree the colour temperature is much more natural than the S2. I do think we could do with greater contrast in the video player as it just doesn't "pop" in the same way. S2 appears much sharper and much greater contrast when playing video especially on lower resolution videos...

Just got my Nexus, fantastic device but I noticed the screen is a lot less bright in max brightness when I put it next to my Galaxy S.. I guess I'll have to get used to that.
Also, anyone else notices a reddish hue, specially when browsing on a white background. Don't know if it's because my eyes need an adjusting period from my old i9000

Is this normal for all SGNs or do we have a bad batch?
Mines the same especially on the right edge. Hopefully the member who calibrated the s2 could calibrate the nexus
haha I made this thread in error. I actually took my phone and compared it to a GS2 in store and it was fine. Just a case of thinking the grass was greener.

I just cranked my brightness all the way up on the Nexus as well as my 2 year old HD2, and the HD2 seems overall brighter. Other folks here are saying the same thing about their Nexus. Any other observations?
I just bought a Galaxy Nexus from Handtec, and I notice that there are lines on the screen that resemble the texture of linen. It's not as noticeable when the brightness it set to max, but when it's darker the lines are very visible.
For other Gnex owners, is this normal? Or maybe this is the effect of the penTile?
Thanks in advance
Normal SAMOLED behavior with white backgrounds.
Get an SLCD if you are unhappy.
Just the way it is.
Thank you. No, I just wanted to know if it were normal, since I've never owned a AMOLED phone. I'm not sacrificing this baby for anything... But can anyone else with a Gnex provide more firsthand knowledge?

This is because AMOLED screens use organic diodes that are more 'noisy' the less brightness there is. That does not mean it actually is more noisy, it simply means that your eyes are able to detect the noise in lower brightness while not as well when the screen is bright.
AMOLED is a funky technology, it's diodes 'age' and their colors have a short transfer period (sometimes if you have a screen turn gray, you can see the previous screens ghost for a short time in low brightness settings).
But the flaws don't outweigh the gains of AMOLED producing the most vibrant colors, contrast and saturation there are at the moment. I love it.
Even though i had an amoled phone before i got the Galaxy Nexus - my Desire was amoled - this effect wasn't very noticeable. Was having the same doubts about the Nexus, thank you for clearing it up.
Thanks for this. I posted in a thread or two about this same behavior yesterday but didn't get any concrete answers. Appreciate it. Glad my phone isn't having issues.
The ghosting is a bit annoying, but strangely I've come to like the 'linen texture'. When it's subtle.
It almost seems as if by design on the app developer's side.

Hello, I'm total agree with you!
but my preoccupation about it dissapeared when I realized that the screen rotates extremly slowly. (galery, web browser, pdf reader...) with everything.
Sometimes even don’t rotate. I have deactivate all screen animations and the same duration. (2 seconds or more)
My nexus s was much faster with a beta rom with android 4.
Therefore I'm much more worried about this possible issue.
Do you have the same problem?
Thanks in advance!
The rotation delay is intentional. There are some ROMs (see Paul's MCR one) that speed it up a lot.

some people (like me) like it when the slightest tilt doesnt change orientation, its better now that its a more deliberate action.
Whilst on the screen issue...
Does anyone have or have experienced a purple haze in the screen? On my device it a purple haze like colour in the bottom right corner. This changes further up the screen until it becomes (from what I can tell) a normal colour. Hardly noticeable until the screen is dimmed, then quite apparent.
I've arranged a return as I've only had it 14 days. Just wondered if this should be expected...

Yes! Except on my screen its noticeable more on the left hand side of the phone. Is this sort of thing normal for this device?
****! I returned mine to Expansys cause i had the same issue and i tough my phone was damaged! Keep it mind my last device was the iPhone 4 which had a pretty good screen! I really don't know if i should keep this device now since you guys say its normal! My friend has a Razr and his whites backgrounds are amazing and on my Gnex they look like my screen is damaged unacceptable for a device i paid top dollar for!
I would advise you to keep it! At first it seemed awkward, but now i dont even notice it. And the fact that the black is actually unlit is simply amazing. I always look into my apps just to see the amazing contrast between the lit and unlit areas of the phone. And when you set the brightness up, you wont even see the textile lines. Trust me, it is worth it for an HD amoled screen, ICS, and a top of the line nexus phone that will always be up to date. BTW if you get the Razr instead of this nexus, i have no words...

I've had numerous phones, GS2, iPhone 4...this is the best screen I've seen yet.
The Pentile discussion is kind of ridiculous.
I've had four phones this year
- Vibrant
- My touch
- Nexus S
- Evo 3d
When compared to everything else including my friends' iPhone this is the best display I have ever used.

Its crazy good, by far the best screen on any device I've ever seen, blacks are so black u can't tell where the phone ends and the screen begins without looking really close. Also u can load up pretty much any page in portrait view with far away zoom and STILL read the really really fine text just fine.

Yeah it uses a pentile display much to people's dismay. Quite a few people/reviews have stated the following: 1.) Whites appear like a linen yellow. 2.) Blue tinge on the screen 3.) Pixelation is noticeable on text. While that is all true the screen isn't that bad, passable at least while playing games or watching videos. Is it the BEST screen ever? I would say no.

Calm down there Nexus fan boy/girl! I'm just stating these are things people have seen. Obviously not saying the blue tinge along w/ the yellow whites occur at the same time. Yes I have seen the screen numerous times, and a co-worker was the one to tell me about the yellowish whites.

Pentile on the original SGS/NexusS wasn't nearly what it is on this Galaxy Nexus. Last night I spent about an hour comparing and contrasting between his iPhone4s and my brand new Galaxy Nexus. When it came down to it, the Galaxy Nexus had the same readability as the vaunted Retina display, but with deeper blacks, and generally more vibrant (ermm, oversaturated) colors. Looks great to me, but people have different preferences.
i've had the moto droid, moto atrix, htc thunderbolt, iphone4, and this is by far the nicest screen ive ever had.

Are you just quoting other posts or do you actually have a GN? If so does the screen look yellow, blue, or pixelated to you? If it does I would return it ASAP because it shouldn't. Mine and the ones I've played with in the store do not.
Pentile? What Pentile?
In my experience, the pentile isn't an issue. The screen is (theoretically) gorgeous, however (and maybe I'm an exception), I've seen that only about 1 in 3 GNexi have a screen that truly looks like it's supposed to. I'm on my third GNex, two of the three have had different screen issues, and the third had a great display but a blown earpiece
That being said, I wouldn't hesitate to buy one, just be sure to THOROUGHLY inspect it before you leave the store. I'm going back for my fourth today.

My co-workers device's screen white's looked yellow. I went into the store to mess around w/ the device and did notice the same on those units. There have been others stating there is a blue tinge, which is supposedly a normal thing, as to preserve the blue pixel. The screen has minor pixelation but it's not too noticeable like the Moto devices.
You must have microscope eyes then. I can't see any pixelation holding device from one palm far from my eyes.

I do have very good vision yes.
No pixelation that I can see, and I use a lot of different types of high res screens for work. I'm really not sure how anyone can say they see pixelation on such a high density display. Take a look at the 'unlock' circle on the lock screen. You have to look realllly hard to see the jagidness - and this is a circle drawn with square pixels
Colours are slightly over saturated which makes them pop more, however they are not technically accurate - if you care. Eg. look at a photograph from a SLR camera on the gn vs a high quality computer screen.
The only real issue I see is the artefacts (grey 'dirty' look of white backgrounds) on the 2 or 3 lowest brightness settings. This is slightly annoying because you need to leave auto brightness on to preserve battery. You can however use a custom rom to change the lowest limit of brightness.
Trust me, when you turn it on, you'll think the 'google' logo that comes up is actually a sticker on the screen, and when the startup animation starts you'll fall off your chair

I will say that I can notice some pixelization of text, primarily on colored text (reds, blues, purples, etc. are the worst offenders), although that's not to say it's terribly pixelated, but it is noticeable if you know what you're looking for. Certainly nothing to dismiss the phone for, but to say it's not visible is untrue.
i can see it's pentile (having had a nexus one I know how it looks) but it's not much of a problem, the resolution is high enough. Sure it would be nicer if it was RGB, but it's good enough for me, at least (and I hated my N1's screen)

I agree. Overall I like the display better than my iphone 4, but it does have flaws, and I think the sharpness of the apple retina is better. Still, the blacks are to die for, and I like a little more punch to my colors since I'm not going to be doing any color-sensitive work on a phone. Plus, the size on the GN is juuuuust right.
Though I have to disagree with the poster that said the opening animation looks incredible. I was actually severely disappointed that they chose such a low res animation to "showcase" the HD super amoled display. It should be in native res, but it obviously isn't. That said, it would probably slow down the boot process considerably if that were the case, so it's just fine the way it is.
PenTile, yes. Excellent quality, also yes.
Unless you are a photographer, the colours shouldn't matter that much to you - white is still pretty white, and black is very black, and everything inbetween is pretty damn good too.
Those complaining about pixelation on the screen...well, to be honest, I can see pixels on my PC monitor, and it's a fancy-shmancy 1080p 120Hz 3D monster. I can see pixels on a Retina display. Pixels are everywhere.
I CAN SEE THE PIXELS D:

Yea, That's Samsung for you. I was lucky not to have any on my device. And from the looks of it, it isn't too common on the Note 2014.
The Nexus 10 though. Wow. Everyone had it. It wasn't a question of if you have it or not, it was about how bad. Not to mention the blacks were blue.

Mine just came today and with my normal brightness setting there is only the slightest hint of bleed from one of the four LED spots on the bottom of the screen.
My panel seems perfect so far so it doesn't seem likely I will exchange it over this.
I'm pretty impressed, but I have to say the build quality is not up to par with my IPad and not what I would expect at this price. Samsung has a long way to go to produce really premium products.

I would like to see one iPad without a light bleed. So far a few I saw (including 2 which belong to my wife) had some light bleed as well. What is wrong with build quality of your unit? Mine, except for light bleed, is very good.
I think my tablet has very very slight bleed at the bottom of the screen near both capacitive buttons, I won't return it because it's barely noticeable BUT does this mean the whole screen has an issue and also could it deteriorate over more usage or anything like that.
Apologies if these are idiotic questions but this "screen bleed" is a completely new subject for me lol.

This was my worry, my screen has slight light bleed at the bottom nothing too noticeable but then again don't all LCD screens have some form of light bleed
Writting from my third Note 10.1 2014. The first one had a huge dust particle under the screen and bad bleeding. The second one had a bearable bleeding but at least 7 bad pixels (3 dead ones right in the middle of the screen and 4 stuck). This Note 10.1 has almost non- existent bleeding and just one little dust particle (invisible if you are not looking for it) but has yellow tint along the bottom edge (over the buttons) and at the bottom left corner, so when you are reading in portrait mode over white background it is impossible not to get distracted as you start one line with black over white and you finish it with black over yellow.
I truly love this device but I am getting tired of all of this. My third replacement is on its way, though I seriously doubt it is going to be a good one.
iiSo say we all!! from my SM- P600
Just noticed the blee today while watching netflix...does it actually get worse? I can live with it now but I would send it in for a replacement if it's gonna deteriorate over time
I'm on my third device and 2 of them have had lightbleed. I can't say for the first one though because the screen was dead on arrival. I think everyone should expect some lightbleed on any LCD screen. If your tablet is perfect in every other aspect other than a little screen bleeding then I wouldn't exchange it. There are too many things that can be messed up other than the screen such as S-pen detection, loose speaker grills, dead pixels, dead screens, faulty bluetooth, and the list goes on...
I have a 32bg black model and my GF has a white one, both bought at BB at about the same time. There is quite a lot of difference between the screens, mine has quite a bit of light bleed on the upper right and all across the bottom - you can see the individual leds - hers does not. However my screen is quite a bit brighter and much more "white," in side by side comparison hers looks a bit yellow. All of the screen settings are exactly the same. Last night we had them both on for 3+ hours of internet and point-and-click gaming, I had 80% power remaining while she had 56%, checking hers I noticed the brightness was at 100 while mine was around 25%. She says it needs to be that high to see the game and it does seem much darker/mudier than mine. Thinking these must have different panels because they look so different. So, light bleed or dim yellow battery eating screen, are these our options?
The pictures were taken with an iPhone 5S (flash off). The tablet's brightness was maxed and as you can see, the room was dark. Does this degree of backlight bleed warrant a return (mainly concerned of the tablet's longevity. Thoughts appreciated.

The picture isnt very clear as its difficult to take a picture of properly but if the points I have highlighted are the only bit of screen light bleed you have then yeah its normal, I have pretty much identical bleed points too as do most people on here.

Thanks, I appreciate the prompt response.
And I'm inclined to agree with your observation. In particular, those are indeed the points of bleeding.
What do you make of the top corners being so bright, though? It's not like the points you've highlighted, but rather large areas -maybe this is where the light comes from?
In all honesty, I'm more concerned about future degradation than anything else. If the device is going to remain as is, I don't mind the current state of bleeding. But if this is an indication that the device will be noticeably worse in a few months down the road, then I'd like to take it back to the shop and exchange it.
Again, thanks for your time and opinion.
Much appreciated -and thanked.

No problem mate.
From what I understand Lightbleed comes from the points it's visable - it's just that for whatever reason the device doesn't block the light passing through hence the brighter areas along the bottom. And about degradation from what I have read it doesn't get worse or better just stays like that.
It depends on you if you want to give it back and keep trying to get a bleedless device but as some form of Lightbleed is common on LCD's it will be tough. I returned one due to high Lightbleed which was visable in a lit room and the brightness on low - that's bad Lightbleed and I couldn't accept that so I got the one I have now and the Lightbleed for me is more than acceptable. Plus the other problem is if your device is perfect apart from the bit of Lightbleed your next one could have other issues LOL.

And on that note, I'll be sticking with this one.
