Hi,
I am going to go on contract on this phone for sure!
But I was wondering about pre-ordering from websites.
Firstly if I pre order will I be able to cancel in case I find a better contract.
Also websites such as mobiles.co.uk and mobilephonesdirect.co.uk are they ok websites to buy from because the reviews are quite bad for what I have read but some of them are official retailers for HTC.
For unlimited web - say if you use the internet a lot throughout the day how much GB would you use? How likely are you to meet the 500mb of 1GB allowance?
Finally how have your experiences been and do you have any websites for me to look at?
Thank you
Raminder
I have 1GB allowance on TMobile and have NEVER gone over it.
I was just looking up T-mobile fair usage policy thingy majig! And I saw this section that Android phones get a 3GB allowance. Is this true?
I will be streaming of youtube etc so i do not think 1 GB will be enough!
Thank you
Raminder

No, I only get 1GB
And I always stream from youtube, use spotify WITHOUT playing from hard drive and am on the internet all the time in my Computer Science Lectures lol. Only time I went over is when I used tethering to go on Xbox Live. They didn't do anything, said I was restricted to only web browsing on peak times but i could go on the market and everything fine, it obviously doesn't effect android phones.
I have 1GB as well and never use it all. I’m using YouTube, face book, email (lots of emails) and traffic for my sat nav and some browsing.
Oh and very often I’m using it on my laptop to share the web connection.
Just to backup what the guy above said, I also use it to tether to my laptop when I'm out and I've never gone over it that way, only when I tethered up to the Xbox for Xbox Live.
Thanks guys,
basically what you guys are doing is exactly what i will be doing (in my lessons as well lol)
I have bee searching but there are so many different answers.
Now i am just wondering if I should preorder my desire today! It is just too damn desirable!!!
Hello ladies, gents, killer droids and aliens.
A somewhat long time lurker finally decided to register myself
Anyway, it seems quite likely that I'll pull trigger on one Desirable droid in a near future.
But I have to know couple of things before I dive in head first into the world of droids.
So if any of you could answer those questions, it would be... in the word of Borat, "Very nice" Here goes nothing!
1. Is it possible to browse files in my PCs on my LAN via WLAN from desire?
2. If so, is it possible to stream files (mp3s and avi most likely) from there to be played on desire?
3. Lastly, can desire handle WPA2-PSK?
Cheers!
In answer to your first two, yes (using EStrongs File Explorer, although I'm sure other apps will do it too) and a hesitant yes. Hesitant because I use the Subsonic media server to do just that but that might not be what you're after. Not sure if anything else can do it as I haven't tried. Subsonic is incredibly easy to set up though, and a one-time donation gives you Android streaming for life.
Not sure about the third as my home uses standard WPA for legacy reasons. I'd be extremely surprised if it didn't though.
Hey thanks for a quick answer!
Hm that subsonic seems like it's only meant for music and not for movies and such hmm...
Well the reason I asked about WPA2 is that my other handhelds such as DS and PSP aren't supporting it in the first place (which is a kind of bummer, but I will never lower security for play stuff online in any case)
Yes to number 3.. i use that encryption at home and the desire connects no problem...

Ah yes, sorry, Subsonic is just for music, but it does that music very well!
Can't help with video streaming, but it wouldn't surprise me to see something that does it. There's already the Youtube and Beebplayer apps so it can't be hard to do the same for LAN based videos.
Thanks micks & Noiz!
Well, you can come quite far with couple of gigs of music (besides I already have iPod nano) but TV series and such are bit bigger than mp3s you know? So I wasn't all that sure if I wanted to transfer everything to the phone.
BTW are there any competent program which can run divx without any hitch? or is the "convert the avi file to something else" the way to go?
ATM converting to mp4 with x264 is the way to go. unfortunately.
I recall reading something about somthing, like "Divx playback out of the box" and that kind of fluff regarding Desire before...
Was it pure 100% BS then? .... sigh ....

BS? No.
Available out of the box? No.
Coming "soon" to an OTA update near you? Yes.
"soon" IE.... next year?
I've seen the slow update on the Hero, so I won't be holdning my breath on this.
(The very reason I didn't go for Hero in the first place, painfully slow updates)

I really wish I could be more specific, but "soon" is as close as it gets.. Hence putting it in quotes.
For now, I'd convert using something like Handbrake. Not an ideal solution as you always lose some of the quality when cross converting, but it's the best solution for the moment.
Yeah I understand that, that's the reason I asked "next year?"
Well, I guess the quality itself won't bother me, after all, it's just on 3.7inch screen.
The main "trouble" as I see is that, it takes such tremendious time converting files.
I mean it takes more time to convert file than show itself you know?
The reason I stopped watching stuff on my PSP, it just took way too much time.
the one worry i'd have about streaming is data usuage... if your on 3g etc.. if you have wi fi handy then great.. but i'd imagine streaming over 3g would eat data quite quickly
Oh I was talking about while I'm on my own network.
So no worries there. Thank you for your concern tho.
But your post reminds of me something, but is kinda OT, should I start a new thread about that, or should I keep going here?
Since nobody's protesting, I'll just go ahead and ask it.
I feel a bit torned about how much data plan I'll be using.
I will be checking and sending around 10 mails avg a day, maybe some net surfing (nothing heavy duty) maybe couple of youtube vids, no twitter or facebook.
Will 500mb/month suffice or will I use it up within couple of days? LOL
I srsly have no idea, so any insight will be appreciated!
well i have 50 megs per day (dont ask irish plans are $hite) actually its a pay as you go contract.. 50 megs a day for 99 cents.. never go over that to be honest.. i have email client on and browse the web a bit.. and market place.. wouldnt watch video etc or do streaming unless i'm on wireless network... i think unless your doing streaming or sending large emails you'd do well to use 500 in a month.. i know guys who are on 250mb for a month and they say it doesnt them fine..

I think it really depends on your usage. I suggest a data monitoring app such as 3G Watchdog. Run it for a few days and it'll give you a good guage as to how much data you're using.
Well micks, when you think about it you have 50mb a day!
that's total sum of 1.4 gig per month!
So it's like 3 times more than I was thinking about after all.
Fatman, true, however, the provider here are sneaky bunch who allows custmers upgrade on plan, but not downgrade!
Choises choises, just way too many choises tbh.
I have to decide if I gonna go for Legend or Desire in the first place.
I mean Legend got some seriously sexy outershell! But desire shines with raw poweeeerrr.
I'm just asking myself why HTC didn't make legend shell with desire internals!
Does anyone have the spotify service for their evo 4g?
im planning on paying the 10$ a month for the premium service but i want to know if it is worth it.
anyone care to elaborate on their experience?
Anyone have spotify for their evo?
I tried it for a day. The service works, but didn't have the music I liked. I was able to get a refund because they also didn't include the Radio feature that was advertised very early on launch day.
Be sure they offer the music you want before paying.
I use the free service and it works well for me.
I've had it for about 1.5 years(vpn service and paypal acct setup as uk). I like the service. I find that they have stuff that rhapsody does not.
I have premium and it works over 3g but not 4g. Even when I tether my eee transformer, it stays offline when 4g is on.
I just got it. I personally love it (for now). You must have the premium subscription for the mobile app
ya im trying to pay for the premium service is it actually worth it
Love the app. Totally worth the $10/month if you listen to a lot of music on your phone.
I like it. The downsides are: you're renting music. Occasionally there are play back issues. Spotify doesn't have an intuitive way to find new music save a simple search. With millions and millions of songs on there, it would be awesome to have something like 'find similar artist'. The desktop client may have this, but I've been using it 99% mobile so I wouldn't really know.
Other then that, its the bee's knees

Have a question, I am upgrading to the Galaxy S3 this coming Thursday and was wondering what I should do with my INC. There will be no plan on it but I still would have the use of wifi. What could I use it for if it will no longer be my primary phone? Any suggestions? Thanks in advance.

Its still a great device even without service, its an all in 1 tool. Its a camera, mp3 player, internet on wifi, game player, etc. You could use an app like groove ip, and get a free wifi phone and have a sort of house phone. You could pass it to a younger family member or a friend. You could sell it. Its really up to you.
Wifi, flashing, music, alternative device.
Various things you can do.. I'm getting the nexus on Tuesday and because my device is in poor condition I will not be selling it to best buy as I originally planned. But.. I will be show them its running jelly bean lol, wish it was Verizon though
Anyway just keep it as a backup and stuff.

They fetch a pretty decent price on ebay with good ESNs in good shape. I've been looking for one sort of to set up a friend for development. You can probably expect about $90+
Other than that like the others said it makes a good media player, gps, portable gaming device, etc. Use it as a tool kit on wifi.
I am sorry for this newbie question, but I have searched many times and am lost.
I am just looking for a suitable Live TV option. Can anyone help me understand, if I am missing something here? Or what I want doesn't exist still?
I see mostly apps with prerecorded clips from good stations. Then they will have live channels but they are mostly public access, obscure or foreign. Those apps are nice, but I'm looking for live CNN and others.
I already know about OTA antennas and have that. I was hoping to get additional channels. I also know about the app that simulates live TV which is great, but I am still looking for live TV.
Then there are some apps that are scraping different pirated live sources? But it seems like the better ones are pay, and they are mostly lower resolution (to save their bandwidth), and different quality for each station, and every week some stations (links) break? I don't want to have to manually update links regularly or be looking forward to a show and the link breaks.
I am okay with paying something like $10/month. I can't afford my local cable company's pricing of $40-80 a month, or more. Also my local company doesn't seem to be a good one. Is there some way I can pay for online access to Xfinity (or another company) even though I don't live in the Comcast service area?
I'd be happy with just a few channels. I wish I could just pay the certain places a fee (like CNN). I'd be okay with SD channels too, but I want them to not be skipping/buffering, or look bad from compression.
When I search I keep finding tutorials that involve hardware for an HTPC. If I have to buy hardware I would consider it, but I thought my FireTV would be enough. I have a rooted FTV with Gotham.
Also I keep finding tutorials about EPGs and PVRs. I don't think I need that until I have a reliable source of live streams. Right now I don't care about recording streams, seeing what's on every channel, etc.
Thanks so much for any pointers! Like I said, I'm lost.
Edit: I am going to try SportsDevil for sports. I don't need much sports, it may be enough.
I don't think what you want exists - at least not legally (assuming you are in the United States)
Yes, the best I have found is about $30/month (or $20/month for very limited channels, most I already get through OTA). And that price would even be ok if I got every channel I want, but most of those services want $70/month to get more channels. So, barely a savings over the local cable company.
