I am sorry for this newbie question, but I have searched many times and am lost.
I am just looking for a suitable Live TV option. Can anyone help me understand, if I am missing something here? Or what I want doesn't exist still?
I see mostly apps with prerecorded clips from good stations. Then they will have live channels but they are mostly public access, obscure or foreign. Those apps are nice, but I'm looking for live CNN and others.
I already know about OTA antennas and have that. I was hoping to get additional channels. I also know about the app that simulates live TV which is great, but I am still looking for live TV.
Then there are some apps that are scraping different pirated live sources? But it seems like the better ones are pay, and they are mostly lower resolution (to save their bandwidth), and different quality for each station, and every week some stations (links) break? I don't want to have to manually update links regularly or be looking forward to a show and the link breaks.
I am okay with paying something like $10/month. I can't afford my local cable company's pricing of $40-80 a month, or more. Also my local company doesn't seem to be a good one. Is there some way I can pay for online access to Xfinity (or another company) even though I don't live in the Comcast service area?
I'd be happy with just a few channels. I wish I could just pay the certain places a fee (like CNN). I'd be okay with SD channels too, but I want them to not be skipping/buffering, or look bad from compression.
When I search I keep finding tutorials that involve hardware for an HTPC. If I have to buy hardware I would consider it, but I thought my FireTV would be enough. I have a rooted FTV with Gotham.
Also I keep finding tutorials about EPGs and PVRs. I don't think I need that until I have a reliable source of live streams. Right now I don't care about recording streams, seeing what's on every channel, etc.
Thanks so much for any pointers! Like I said, I'm lost.
Edit: I am going to try SportsDevil for sports. I don't need much sports, it may be enough.
I don't think what you want exists - at least not legally (assuming you are in the United States)
Yes, the best I have found is about $30/month (or $20/month for very limited channels, most I already get through OTA). And that price would even be ok if I got every channel I want, but most of those services want $70/month to get more channels. So, barely a savings over the local cable company.

is it just me, or is the mobi tv unlimited cab no longer...unlimited? it now goes to the "Buy me" now page.
Not just you...
my MobiTV goes to the same "buy now" page. Im a little disappointed because I really liked that program. Probably the only TV software worth using (as far as I know). sad thing is, I would buy it for $50 or less, or maybe $5/ month. There is no way I'm gonna pay $10 monthly though. For what? 20 minutes every few days? I checked out Flo TV also...looks nice. Once again, I'm not going to subscribe to overpriced (up to $25/month) TV on my phone. maybe one of these companies will figure out that if they charge a reasonable ($5 or less) monthly price, or a decent flat rate, people will actually buy their software instead of hacking at it. In the mean time, does anyone know of a decent program at a more reasonable price? ...I tried e-mobile TV, but i thought it was terrible. Im definitely not looking for obscure material to watch during my commute... I want the essentials.

not real tv but at least multiple video sources to stream and also wiki
try vtap it is nice and works great on ppc by 3g or wifi
I totally agree, developing these apps should be lucrative for developers, their time is money; but the price point for the majority of these apps are strangely rediculous. 15 dollars for a twenty year old pong game, 10 dollars a month for bite size low quality t.v. snippets? Not to mention 40 dollars for an IM plus app. Would aol IM be as popular as it is if everyone had to shell out 40 smackers? Makes me wonder how much apple's gonna charge for apps that decade old phones have had all along
Dunno if these devs smoke...
Like Dave Chappelle said, "that's crack prices''!!
Anyone with an answer to the original question? I know we can't go into to much detail here but, anyone?????????? If you do not want to post the answer here, how about referring us some where else.

one word for you: slingbox
I just reinstalled the MobiTV v2 cab again, and it is working, ... but I'm not sure if it's going to keep going after the 3-day trail version is over?
Radio...Hmmmmm
Since the last time I tried i upgraded my ROM to "Dutty's Hybrid 6.1 WWE lite" and Radio 1.65.14.06. I just installed the .cab it it does seem to be working again, but wreckerdude is right. lets see if it continues to work after 3 days!
I think it might...because before i flashed my rom / radio, i tried to reinstall several versions with no luck at all. No matter what i got the "buy me" screen. If it does work again, my question is this. How does changing the radio effect MobiTV at all? anyone know? lets wait a few days and discuss.
Ok peeps.
I am off to London for a day out with my girls doing the sites, museums and the like.
My question is, is there a decent tube planner / street map free software out there to use to help our day?
Anyone have any suggestions.
I dont particularly wanna pay for anything as I am in london once in every 5 or 6 years....
Many thanks
Neil
there´s an app called metro.
I was in the same situation somedays ago. I´ve been to London in the past week, and believe me that if you use the little map (paper) they have there in the station its pretty easy to use the tube there.
They have lots of infos in the stations. You just need to see where you wanna go, and check the map if the tube goes there. And once in the station, search the line you have to catch and last, each platform shows where to go (direction).
But its better someone that live there tell you more.
I personally think its pretty easy to use.
A good commercial (not free) one is: http://www.visualit.co.uk/ - I use it.
The Metro program is free and excellent but not very visual: http://www.nanika.net/Metro/
One thing I tried was to download a copy of the tube map and then view it in the album.
enjoy the trip !
there's also City Advisor here on XDA, still under development but really promising
I also use Metro, have used it for business and for Holiday trips etc. (used it in Barcelona on holiday last year)
Cheesy Dave is right in that it is not very visual but for a free route planner that takes in the tube and mainline trains in the city it is brilliant.
For just about anything else I use googlemaps.
google
silly but why not use google maps with the Sat Nav operational and download a map of the undergroup to nav your way on the tube.
Or is that too easy. Maybe thats just me, but I do know London very well by tube and road.
I got tube 2 (visual it). are u interested? send me pm
Travel Guide by mobisystems.com is perfect for what you want. maps, tourist info, photos etc
You could just get a large image from google and save it as a picture

if u know yuor city it's the better solution. if u r a traveller, in a big city, it's comfortable to have a program that's a navigator in a tube.
I work for the london underground, so come to Camden Town and I'll give you all the info you need for ... FREE
I "tested" the Visual it Tube2 application and it did not convince me to buy it. The path tool suddenly stopped working and even while it was It had very poor graphic to be useful, was really not easy to read/use. In my opinion you'd better stick with a london map
@Rathis
I'll be in London near camden town from 14th march, if you happen to see a mad italian trying to get a satellite fix with a touch HD in the tube you'll probably be watching me.
London Tube
You can download the official map here. Trust me, the best thing is to get the map when you arrive. You can get them for free very easy at every tubestation (also at Heathrow express and connect). No hasle with your phone Besides that it is quite easy to travel around with the tube. There are 3 major connections (circle, district and central) they can bring you nearly anywhere within walking distance. In every cabin there is a good overview/map of all the lines.
one other thing to remember is that most shops or places are very aware of which is the nearest tube station, and often the ads for such plsces will have that info clearly shown.
You can also try the "Visitor Guide" from 3lobyte.nl it's look like something that you want.
by the way Smog, the 14 March I'm off
Hi,
I am going to go on contract on this phone for sure!
But I was wondering about pre-ordering from websites.
Firstly if I pre order will I be able to cancel in case I find a better contract.
Also websites such as mobiles.co.uk and mobilephonesdirect.co.uk are they ok websites to buy from because the reviews are quite bad for what I have read but some of them are official retailers for HTC.
For unlimited web - say if you use the internet a lot throughout the day how much GB would you use? How likely are you to meet the 500mb of 1GB allowance?
Finally how have your experiences been and do you have any websites for me to look at?
Thank you
Raminder
I have 1GB allowance on TMobile and have NEVER gone over it.
I was just looking up T-mobile fair usage policy thingy majig! And I saw this section that Android phones get a 3GB allowance. Is this true?
I will be streaming of youtube etc so i do not think 1 GB will be enough!
Thank you
Raminder

No, I only get 1GB
And I always stream from youtube, use spotify WITHOUT playing from hard drive and am on the internet all the time in my Computer Science Lectures lol. Only time I went over is when I used tethering to go on Xbox Live. They didn't do anything, said I was restricted to only web browsing on peak times but i could go on the market and everything fine, it obviously doesn't effect android phones.
I have 1GB as well and never use it all. I’m using YouTube, face book, email (lots of emails) and traffic for my sat nav and some browsing.
Oh and very often I’m using it on my laptop to share the web connection.
Just to backup what the guy above said, I also use it to tether to my laptop when I'm out and I've never gone over it that way, only when I tethered up to the Xbox for Xbox Live.
Thanks guys,
basically what you guys are doing is exactly what i will be doing (in my lessons as well lol)
I have bee searching but there are so many different answers.
Now i am just wondering if I should preorder my desire today! It is just too damn desirable!!!
Hee guys.
I have a huge problem, because i'm not able to log in the market place. I'm in the netherlands, I changed my region here https://account.live.com/summarypage.aspx
but my phone and zune software stills ays, not available, can anyone help em, please
very kind regards
victor

If they do not change this option soon WP7 will fail. There is a massive market outside the USA.
I still cant believe we have to do this when the phone is sold world wide.

definitely true. the reason why the iPhone succeeds is because it's app store is available around the world with over 70 countries, mine included.
Getting a Windows phone was the best decision i made, until found out i can't buy paid apps off the marketplace, you need a US credit card or something.
This marketing strategy is a potential WP7 killer.
I think the app marketplace is available in most places...at least in their initial target areas. The guy is from the netherlands so I assume he's after a zune pass and for that MS is beholden to the recording industry but I believe they'll have a solution for all their target markets, perhaps not all having the zune pass, but they will all be able to buy the music.

that makes me curious. Iphone has music streaming now, right? Does that work everywhere?
I think some of the problem that microsoft is having is that some countries want more money for the streaming rights than in the USA.
Apple doesn't have streaming like zune pass natively....you can get third party software in the app store I think.
The problem for sure is what the content owners want financially...I was old by an MS rep that in Canada for insance, SOCAN (content industry reps) are wanting a ridiculous amount of money...from what I gather they are not really interested in the rental idea to the point where it would make sense for a consumer to purchase it...
As much as I'd like to blame MS for incompetent negotiating, the music industry is notoriously stupid and short term in their thinking...

Actually no, Zune doesn't work for apps either unless you change the region.
Zune pass does also not work in Germany but that problem is not related to MS or to Zune but to the GEMA. -> http://www.gema.de/en/
Thanks to them wanting astronomical amounts of money, most streaming services etc are not possible in Germany. REALLY annoying

Same issue in Canada...it's called SOCAN here...it gets even crazier here as the artist association who already get a tax on all media want to further charge...just getting out of hand. I can't really complain about the kids these days who will just bypass it all and get it illegally or the many new artists who just bypass these corrupt associations and sell directly to their audience...
Regarding the app marketplace...that is a big FAIL if it's not available in all of Europe...I know Android marketplace only became available in Canada about a year ago but you'd think MS would have that sorted out of the gate...music I understand but the app marketplace seems silly not to have it working...it works in Canada
Well if this is not sorted out by then end of January I for one will not be upgrading to a WP7 phone.
Having no access to the app market is not going to cut it for me.
One easy solution that would solve this problem instantly would be to allow us to pay using Microsoft points, These are available to most I think.
yep MS Points would work a whole lot more. i sent the MS guys some tweets again regarding this
Been out searching for a way to watch TV on my device in some shape or form.
Checked the play store, Google, applanet, and Aptoide.
I can't find a reliable place.
Have anyone found anything reliable??? Got movies going for me for free on android but I don't spend much time on movies.
Hi,
Maybe SPB TV:http://spbtv.com/android-software/tv/
But not updated for a long time,I tested it on my HTC Sensation (without ICS) and it worked well.
But now on Gnex and ICS I don't know...Maybe you can give a try...
Weird. They show a GNEX advertising their app on their site. Yet I can't find it on the store.
Any reason for this. Seen this app on my iPod.
Edit1: Now I know why ppl bashed at this in iTunes. =p
Doesn't have Any of the American channels. This is like every other app I've seen.
Thanks though.
Veetle is a good one(playstore). It's only streaming of what the authors choose to host. You can pick from movies, sports, shows. Similar to justin.tv if you are familiar with the format. The down side is again it's streaming and you have to watch what they put up and when.
If you have Xfinity or Comcast there you can watch their on demand with their player. "xfinity player"
For US sadly there is not many streamed live TV channels.
Warner got something going. Got a cousin's ex who told me how they did it is weird and is a mystery and is can't be understood really. He does AT&T cable stuff.
Before I dive into this veetle app, Are there any channels a 16 year old would watch lol.
Cuz I'm 16 and really aim for the larger networks. =p
