1st Post. Awesome place!
This is my story:
Love my EVO but was getting low in memory and learned that the only way to get rid of the crap was rooting the phone, so I did that. Got rid of the crap thur TB but still that was not good enough.
Read here how to partition my SD card and did it and noticed that the card was partitioned but my memory was still low. Then I realized that the stock app2sd does not work that way so I downloaded darktremors app to realize that DT does not work with stock ROMs, crap!
I gathered enough courage to flash my first ROM so I can take advantage of my partitioned card and started reading info about that.
I'm inclined to flash CM7 Latest Nightly 30MAR since it looks like is pretty steady since I'm not going to flash ROMs every week. Also, I read that the stock kernel works with that ROM. Here's my question: I will do a complete wipe to flash the new ROM but if I do that, am I wiping the kernel?
Please be gentle with this newbie

Yes, when you wipe, it will also wipe the kernel. There's the kernel that will come with the rom. Or you can flash another aosp kernel. Just remember to do nandroid first.
Sent from my lair.
Thanks you! Where I can find a working kernel that works with the ROM I mentioned above? Sorry to ask but this is all new to me and there's many choices and opinions!
Thanks again

With CM7? I'm a big advocate of the Tiamat kernels (namely 3.3.7 - and I use the SBC version) as it as always treated my device the best when running AOSP ROMs.
And should you flash the ROM, go through the setup, flash a different kernel and things don't seem right, you can always flash the ROM again (wiping cache and dalvik cache) and it'll just replace the kernel. But that's also why you make a nandroid, in case something more serious arises.

I've seen positive mentions of the latest one too, but I haven't checked it. Not going to try and fix what isn't broken.
YMMV
Thanks blue I'll try that. BTW, I work with Geovanny Soto's mom. Cool lady and cool family.

If you don't like that then check out the link at the bottom for step by step on how to get a great aosp setup going. Low memory means that you have too many apps right? I've found that you don't need to partition your SD. You can just use the stock move app to SD option in cm7.
You may however be talking about low ram in which case your apps are staying open and using up ram.
Doing my setup will get rid of that and make your phone very speedy and efficient.

Thanks Crossrocker! The truth is that I don't have many apps installed but seems like that bunch of apps only works in the internal memory so I can't move them to the sd card in my stock ROM.
I will check the link and let you know. Also, I have read post from you before and always have been very informative, that's why I have the cojones to flash my first ROM.
Thanks!

what? doing the nand backup? that's just in case the kernel doesn't work you can restore to the previous condition your phone was in (so do it before you flash baked's kernel)
I'm not sure if his kernels will work on other roms though, I think I tried once
I've used it on my ROM what ROM are you using that might help.

Yes the kernel can help with battery life. You should be ok with flashing a different kernel and that ROM but as posted do a NAND backup before flashing the kernel.

#6 has never been available for download. I used BS 1.7 on NA 4.19 and my battery was day and a half if not better with average use...seriously. I was amazed. I tried all the baked kernels and nothing worked like that.
Now I am on BS 1.8 using the same kernel and not getting near the same batt life.

I have no clue how you guys are doing it, but I have the 1.7 version with kernel 6.
I took it off the charger this morning (after a full charge), it is now almost dead, with very little use.
How do you guys do it? Your not shopping the images are you?
This is a newb question I know, I have searched all over the forums. i have the stock rom and am not interested in any of the roms since most of them seem to not have 4g working or some other things( cant wait until they do!). My question is how do I flash just the kernel? i have never flashed anything before and I just backed up everything with rom manager. thanks!!!

Wipe cache, wipe dalvic, flash like you would a Rom. Don't forget to nand first.
Sent from my blah blah blah blah
Edit - I'm assuming there's a specific kernel you have that you want to flash, and you didn't mean how to extract the kernel from a full Rom - also just noticed that you said you already backed up with rom manager. You may want to consider backing up manually through recovery or using amonra instead - nobody seems to know what exactly rom manager wipes when you tell it to wipe.

i think you're misinformed (or haven't searched hard enough) - most, if not all, sense based ROMs have everything working and some (i.e. wireless/usb tether, performance/efficiency tweaks, etc.). it's the cm/aosp roms that don't have everything working (yet).
flashing kernels is similar to flashing roms. there is a plethora of threads on the topic. read some of the stickies and many of your questions will be answered to get you started with flashing roms/kernels.

here you go:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=653
all roms are there. aosp roms are usually the roms where everything is not working.
general steps to flashing (but always read the post from the developer for any special instructions):
1. download file to sd card
2a. get into recovery (either via quickboot app or via powering down then holding volume down button while powering up)
2b. navigating in recovery - volume keys to change selection, power button to select
3. nand backup
4. wipe data, cache and dalvik (only wipe cache and dalvik if you're flashing a kernel)
5. flash the rom/kernel you downloaded
6. reboot
7. drink beer
if something goes wrong, get back into recovery and restore your nand backup.
hope this gets you started.... but read, read, read.
good luck.
sorry OP - back on topic. did you wipe cache and dalvik before flashing the kernel? what's your up time and awake time (found in settings>about phone>battery). do you have any monitoring apps installed (i.e. system panel, android system info? you may have rogue app.

I rooted my Evo yesterday and flashed myns rom. I like the stock Rom that my phone came with and I would like to return to it. I would like to improve battery life as much as I can but with the stock Rom. So my questions are, Where can I download the stock Rom? I have hw 004 and it came with 3.30.651.3 second question is, what could I do to the stock Rom to improve battery life?
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
Sprint Lovers is a very close to stock rom, your best bet probally lies there. After that, you can try running a few apps like SetCPU and Juice Defender. You do have to pay for SetCPU from the marketplace though, so it may not be your first choice.
A task watcher or killer also helps, I tend to lean towards Watchdog over something like Advanced Task Killer. You can also try AutoKiller Memory Optimizer, but if you don't know what you're doing, I'd suggest leaving it on the standard settings.
Is the stock available for download? Let's just say incase of warranty purposes and I had to unroot

You should ALWAYS nandroid backup your current phone image before flashing any ROMs. If you would have, you'd be able to easily revert to the stock.
It is available somewhere, but not sure where for 004/3.30.

In these forums are rooted odex/deodex versions of 3.30.xxx.x. Choose your flavor. Improving battery life is subjective at best and the answer comes from you trying anything and everything. People can tell you what works for them but you should take it with a grain of salt, try it, and expect the worst.
Personally, I improved battery life with one simple solution...extended battery. I have tried many roms for the evo and have settled on a rom I built myself. It's funny because I flashed kernels and roms trying to find the best for me and I ended up making my own and using the stock kernel (I have also extended the stock kernel but that's a different animal).

Again for me I settled on a stock rom I built. I still uninstalled all the sprint stuff and I found that uninstalling every single sense related gibberish helped improve my evo overall (battery, speed, responsiveness, memory space). My info/personal experience is also subjective but you can take it, try it, and if it doesn't work for you nandroid restore is your friend and lifesaver.
Good luck.
Thank you very much. I don't thing your being a ****, I Google a lot of what I asked I just can be a bit ocd and wanted to get info from a forum I trust. Its been a while since I did any flashing but I pick things up pretty fast. I'm gonna try sprint lovers next since its close to stock and experiment with others until I find what fits me best. wondering..
is the unrevoked hboot drivers this?
http://unrevoked.com/rootwiki/doku.p...driver_install
also where is the SDK link?
I see more people look at the General section more then the Q and A so im going to post this here. Im running CM7, 7.0.3. Ive been using it since the cm7 release candidates. This happened during the RC's too, i would be using it, and it would work beautifully for about 3 weeks, then near the end of the week i would boot the phone, and then a bunch of apps force close. Every app that i open force closes, i cant do anything on my phone without something force closing. I cant receive texts, check emails or anything. I open an app and it just closes. Im really really sick of it. I tried re flashing 7.0.3, didnt work. Im looking for either a fix for this, a for sure fix. Or looking for guidance to the original froyo stock rom with sense. It might just be a gingerbread problem, i was rooted on stock for over a month before trying roms. I really need my phone to be working. Please give me some help i would greatly appreciate it!!!!
Well then i make that 1%. Last time it happened when i had Cyanogens last update to CM7 i tried fix permissions, both in recovery and through rom manager. Didnt help. Only thing that helped was installing the update for the next version, worked for about 3 weeks, and now im getting the same force closes. I already tried it today before you posted, didnt help to fix permissions. I can have rom manager open for about 5 seconds then it FC's. Never had this problem on my stock rooted froyo.
Any help? i need phone working alright by tomorrow hopefully.
Can you flash a 2.2 rom.

Idk, can i? I thought you had to do something else to downgrade from gingerbread to froyo.
Nope. Download another 2.2 rom and flash back. The only problem is the kernel but that's in the rom and would change when you flash. I flash between gbread and froyo all the time. If you go Froyo I recommend a z rom. If you want you can do newtoroots new optimized shift its really stable.

Well its running alright, had a couple of random force closes for reasons i dont know. Its fairly slow rom tbh.. I have about 70 MB of memory normally, with CM i had about 200. Ran fast. I tried to look at overclocking, but no app would allow me to. Would any kernel be okay for it? Like chads incredikernel betas? I really need some more performance in this thing, its just running so darn slow! Other then that i really do like the rom.
Is there any way to kinda increase the memory available? Besides closing background apps and removing widgets.
Well i installed beta 8, and it wont go passed my HTC Incredible white screen now, it goes to that then goes black.. Uhhhhh what do i do now? I can get into recovery tho. I cant transfer any files. ****
Someone tell me what to do now... Im screwed..
Was able to mount through recovery, transfering the rom to the phone and going to reflash. ugh!!
Another edit, gah i wish i could just get s-on and not worry about rooting now anymore lol. I just want good performance and a useful phone.
Hello,
I am having some serious issues with my Evo. For several weeks now my Gmail accounts have not been syncing at all, incredibly frustrating, to say the least. I was hoping that the Gingerbread update would take care of this, so I followed all the instructions I could find, downloaded the de-odexed zip update, booted into recovery, wiped davlik, then installed that zip, and it seems to have updated (I'm running 2.3.3 now, that's the updated version, right?). However, not only has that not solved my syncing issue, but now when I went into Titanium Backup, it said that it could not establish root access! Also, when I go into ROM Manager and try to "Manage and Restore Backups," nothing comes up, when I know there are 3 backups on there (I was trying to delete one of them to free up space on my SD card).
Maybe related are the terrible space issues I've been having. It's also for some time now been telling me that I'm running low on space, but I have moved virtually all of the big programs to the SD card and deleted things I do not use, so I really don't understand how it's having such space issues.
Anyway, I really need some help here. I guess the number one most important thing I need to figure out is why I am no longer rooted. Can I just reroot like I did in the first place? But I'm also very bothered by this syncing problem, and the space issue is not far behind.
Any help would be greatly, greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Thanks much to both of you. Yeah, all I really want is the updated stock rom rooted, I'll be happy with that. I'll try out what you suggested later and let you know what happens.
In the meantime, anyone have thoughts on my storage issues? It fluctuates like crazy, goes from 50 MB+ free, down to like 4. Driving me absolutely crazy!
I have an evo 4g 1st gen and it is rooted with mokee os rom and I do not like this rom. it sucks the batteries life and I have been having problems with some apps. I would really either just like a stock rom or a rom that will be better. thing is, idk how to go about removing the rom that is on my phone and putting on the new one. I had someone else do the root for me and he picked the rom. stupid on my part but not being as savvy as others I was afraid of messing up. but now im ready to learn anything and everything I can if you all would be so gracious to assist. so can anyone please help?

All you need to do is find a good rom where everything works.... http://diablo67sdevelopments.blogspot.com/2013/04/gingerbread-41113-stable.html ,copy it to your sd card and reboot into recovery, wipe everything but the sd card at least 3 times, then flash the rom and the Gapps.... http://goo.im/gapps/gapps-gb-20110828-signed.zip ,after flashing rom and gapps, reboot and set up your phone, thats it,if you have anymore questions, let me know.

You're downloading the ROM itself. You will also need to download the Gapps (Google apps), which are located on the same page as the ROM download link. Wipe, flash the ROM in recovery, then flash the Gapps and reboot.
I suggest reading the info in the link below, also.
