Windows ME wasnt supposed to be a visual refresher like vista was. Honeycomb was trying to make android look pretty. Same with vista.
so far so good
I been toying around with Fc18 an Calkulin FC24 and its been a very sleek experience. There are still some minor issues and hangs ups but overall ICS its a great improvement. My only issue has been continuous crashing on Dolphin HD browser, but it may be on their end.
I don't see ICS being much different than GB in performance. If anything, GB has better battery life with smoother experience compared to current ICS leaks.

What's the fuss?
You know, this might be a good time to ask. Bypassing all the hyperbole, what makes ICS such an improvement over its predecessor?
My phone is using Calk's EL29 ROM and is running great with fast speed and solid battery life. As for cosmetic and functional bells and whistles I'm using ADW Launcher EX, WidgetLocker and a variety of pretty nifty apps and widgets.
If I had the time I'd backup my phone and try out one of these beta ICS ROM's but that's not really an option at the moment.

Well I would assume on a device such as ours, you won't really see a big jump in performance. It is the newest and in its aosp form, where I personally believe it truly shines, it will hopefully bring forth a much more stable and overall better user experience. With every new iteration of googles os, they tweak and lighten it up so that devices with strong hardware will experience something incredible and on some of the older devices that will get official support will run even better.

But if we are talking Motoblur, Sense and TouchWizz....yah Ill take the wizz.
Personally, I think the "official" ICS (LPQ) for the SGS2 seems more like an alpha build than a final product. CM9 nightly version for the i9100 feels more stable than Samsung's LPQ release.
I think I'd just stick with Gingerbread, rather than upgrade to Samsung's ICS builds.
obviously ICS is better the look the feel the speed

Yes... Another ICS thread!
Much like most of us, I've gotten fed up with the ICS thread phenomenon..
However, I wanted to post this thread for the veterans and Devs.
Of course those of us in the know have been watching the activity escalate in the online feeds, and I have to say it's exciting to see the ramping up of releases and leaks..
We are at the threshold of real ICS goodness. I for one have been watching Kevin's Nova Launcher, since I am not a big fan of TouchWiz. Don't get me wrong, Samsung is impressive at coding.. it's functional and beautiful but too too slow and not enough customization for us hardcore themers.. With a few custom apps I see a gorgeous, lightning fast, better than Vanilla ICS experience coming.
Thoughts?

My thoughts: I don't get the big deal over ICS Now, people running WP7 on the other hand...I can see why they get jacked about OS updates - WP7 sucks exponentially less with each one
I can understand people not liking TouchWiz because of the lack of customization and other reasons but not for being too slow. When I first got my S2 I thought it was blazing fast. OP you really think TouchWiz is too slow?

I need to get an answer, which I've been combing through the forums and the internet. I've heard through a very reputable source that Samsung coded Touchwiz so deep it utilizes the on chip GPU verses all the other launchers uses up precious phone resources. Touchwiz was "made" for the hardware of this phone.
Can someone please verify this.

death to TW!!! HAHA
Tw isn't even that bad lol, our phones are fast enough that it doesn't matter
i think its more the UI that most people don't like. ICS is so much prettier and smoother. for me, give me AOSP and I'll decide how I want my phone to look.
But the biggest reason I don't like TW or Sense or any of those custom UI's is cuz it just delays OS updates that much more cuz of that crap. When the AOSP version does everything the Custom ones do....what do I need the custom one for?
Which is the best ROM out there right now that is fast, stable, not perfect but at least good battery life, fast lock on gps and doesn't have data loss...? All your answers are great fully appreciated

Well I am still on 5.01, but it's jailbroken. It's blazing fast, ridiculously smooth, relatively stable, GPS lock is near instantaneous, and I don't have any data loss ever. I do drop calls from time to time and battery life leaves much to be desired though.

Blazer 4.0 is hands down the best room out there right now speed battery life everything works.

entirely a subjective question I will say codename which is aosp but other people like touch wuzz ..... try them all out and see for yourself
Sent from my SPH-D710 using Tapatalk 2 Beta-4
Codename is the best rom out there, except its kinda like aokp, so either of them, except aokp is based of cm9, so either of the three, except they are aosp, so maybe try a touchwiz one, but i heard that fc24 has worse battery life than fc22, but maybe if you update your profile.......whatever, flash them all
Like Epix said, it's all subjective. If you're starting out, you should probably stay with Gingerbread roms. There are several good ones, check the android development thread. I prefer Calkulin's Gingerbread (currently at v3.0) not only because of the stability but also for the stock color scheme/dialer etc. Most of the other roms are themed with different colors that are I just don't prefer.
Calkulins and Phantom Hacker's Blazer seem to be two of the most popular but you will have to try several to see what works best for you in appearance, speed, battery life and features!
Anyone still running EL29 stock or rooted instead of the ICS roms / leaks? If so, why?
I did for a day after reverting back from ICS, but it absolutely sucked. Touchwiz is ugly as hell. It's unbelievable how ugly it is. Did I mention it was ugly? I went straight back to blazer after that terrible, terrible day. The battery life was crappy anyways. Never again...

I would suggest going for Calkulins 2.9.2 then. It runs on lightly themed touchwiz. I just absolutely cant stand the pull down notification bar on the stock rom. The reason why I say 2.9.2 is because 3.0 runs on gunslinger which doesn't play well with the stock underclock/undervolt scripts. It's meant to be used with SetCPU. Also 3.0 uses a 4x5 drawer rather than 5x5. 4x5 is retarded in my opinion. I can't stand it.
Well I like the ICS leaks which I''m using now. Only thing that bugs me is the turbo scroll bug and battery life is about 85 percent of what it is on GB but I'm still gonna give it a few days for the kernel to settle.
I came from the og epic and found that extreme overclocking and my inclination to try tweaks and tinker outweighs my desire to run any leaks. Therefore I have stuck with el29 as source is available. Calkulins 2.9.2 with gunslinger is working suitable to me...

I find ISC smooth as could be with great battery life. I always use SFHubs odin and stock ICS launcher. I dont restore data and back up with google and have not had a problem. SFHubs self extracting odin has got to be the safest most user friendly way to flash in my opinion.

Yes, using rooted stock EL29. Reason is that while I love to tinker and geek out, I have been doing that for decades... There comes a point when you just want some stability and choose not to create more work for yourself than what one would classify as fun.
I can't say that the bricking is or is not a concern for me. There are a few bugs that really tick me off at times, don't get me wrong. so if anything would make me consider going to ics leaked roms, it would be another round of media scanning reboots at startup

I don't know if anyone is picking up on the trends here. But you will notice people basically stating they either use or in some way shape or form revert back to gb to get things done or perform functions that should be trivial. With that in mind it becomes clearer and clearer that samsungs implementation (not Google) of ics is seriously flawed. I can only pray that jb doesn't turn out like ics.

Only reason still on GB is not sure how to pop up to ICS or Jelly a little confused and looking for a good how to upgrade breakdown tutorial.
I would've stayed on blazer or any gingerbread if YouTube and Songza were usable, no 4G in my area and those apps would just keep loading on 3g. I honestly don't see any difference in battery life with gingerbread and the newer ICS roms, only slight speed difference.

I'm running blazer 4.1 because the GB data speeds/ping are better than ICS/JB. I can't stand the touchwiz super-scroll and AOSP ICS/JB still has the 4G bug. Once AOSP fixes the 4G bug I will update. I have never had battery problems on any Rom.
