I just unlocked my bootloader for the first time and installed 4.0.4 via cwm following the guides and all went well but I'm a real amateur at this and would prefer to go back to stock if possible!?
Is there any side effects in having my phone as it is now as I live in the UK and think I used US version of the google images as I followed the guide on Android Central - only occurred to me when it came up with English United States as first language option during clean startup - and will I still receive OTA updates from Google now?
Sorry if these seem like obvious questions.

Hey guys,
I recently got a Galaxy Nexus, and wanted to play around with it. It's still on the 4.0.1 stock ROM (yakjuux build). Haven't made any tweaks to it beyond the basics (removed vibration, disabled data since I don't have a data plan, etc).
Basically, what are the benefits of flashing the 4.0.2 factory image (from Google, can't link it yet)? And how would I go about it? My guess is, I'll need to place the files on the phone, then flash it using flash-all.sh. Or would it be better to just pick a custom ROM and go with that instead of flashing the yakju build?
The benefits of straight yakju are that you should get updates first (faster than yakju** people anyways).
Custom ROMs offer more than stock but bring their own issues/tweaking. Go read every one of the 1000000 threads on "stock vs. custom ROM" (think there's one going on in Q&A right now, actually).
If you want to switch from yakjuux to yakju, follow this guide: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=21113773&postcount=195
I personally used this one to flash my Canadian model to yakju and it works great. It uses your PC (or Mac) + fastboot to flash the items in order. Be sure to follow all of the steps and flash all of the items. In order to receive OTAs (if that's important to you) you need them to all be flashed. Changing one (like recovery or radio) will stop OTAs.
If you need more info, the guide is pulled from this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1464881
Sweet, thanks. That worked great.
I did notice a weird thing after rooting where my phone remained awake constantly even with the screen turned off. Not sure if it fixed itself though. I'll check again to see if the problem persists.
edit: It seems to be fixed now. Awesome.
Ok, I'm still considerably new to the whole Android scene, so I've been reading the forums regarding manual updating and the stock google images, but there's still a few questions I would like answered.
My GN states 'Samsung' in the Product (check attachment) so I am running a custom (?) build of ICS 4.0.2, correct?
Which also means I will not receive updates directly from Google, I will receive them from Samsung when they feel like it instead.
It also states I'm running yakjuxw and Google has only yakju, so my I am wondering what are the differences and IF by installing the yakju official image I will have problems with my GN.
I would also like to know if the yakju official image constains support for Portuguese along with its dictionary or not.
I am aware that my phone will be wiped when I flash the official image so, I would like to know what is the best way to backup and restore the SMS database?
I've read about apps such as SMS Backup & Restore but, for some reason it doesn't really seems THAT reliable (not to mention it doesn't backup MMS messages).
There is literally no difference, just change your code and enjoy. I don't know about the Portuguese language though.
If rooted you can backup all your texts. But if not I'm pretty sire one of the SMS backup apps does indeed get mms as well. There are many apps so try them all.
What do you mean by "just change your code" ?
Are you saying that I can change my product code from yakjuxw to yakju without installing the official image?
Would that allow me to receive the 4.0.4 OTA update, as if it was originally installed with the said official image or there would be incompatibilities that would, somehow, screw it up?
for reference & future people searching / having the same questions I had:
I have manually installed the official google images and it was smooth. I followed the guide in post #2 here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=20310934&postcount=2
(refer to Q: How do I Update to the latest Google Stock Rom (manually)?)
It comes with support for Portuguese and its respective dictionary.
For SMS restore, I used the SMS Backup & Restore which also worked perfectly.
You can find it here: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.riteshsahu.SMSBackupRestore
It was very fast doing the backup, but it took a little time restoring it (around 10 minutes for 2929 messages)

Yes you can change your product code, there's a big thread on it. I don't know however if you do or don't have to flash the stock image during the process. Just read the thread. I luckily got the good product code by default so didn't have to change it.
Hi all,
I just received a new GNex from Vodafone Australia. Can someone please help me figure out which version I have so I can update it?
I am running 4.0.4 (rooted)
The Baseband is:
I9250TDVLE1
The build is:
IMM76K.I9250TDVLE1
I could not find an update on google anywhere...
I found reference to my build pertaining to Toro, Magro and Verizon.
I can't see how all of these could be simultaneously true...
I thought '**** it' I ll roll back to a yakju 'official' 4.0.4 IMM76I ROM from here and then flash the Update to 4.1.1 JRO03C
But When I booted into CWM and tried to flash the imm76i, it would not let me. Is there something I am doing wrong or do not understand about swapping roms...?
(I cleared the cache / factory reset)
Am I stuck with IMM76I until google makes an 4.1.1 update, or can I flash another google rom somehow and get the update that way?
Cheers

That's because the package you downloaded on Google's Developers website needs to be flashed using fastboot, not CWM. Follow this thread to flash back to yakju, and you should be good to go.
Did this work for you? as i have the same phone and im tempted to do this but not if its going to mess the phone up. Damn you vodafone for having to be different

It would definitely work however if you even need to return your phone back to Vodafone, you may or may not run into some issues due to not being on their ROM. It's pretty hard to find random stock ROMs for places other than the main ones these days (or I just might be looking at the wrong places).

I'm sorry, I can't remember what I did, but I fixed it that night, which now feels like months ago.
I installed Nexus Root Toolkit v1.5.2, on a pc and I know that that helped me speed up the process.
You can't ruin anything unless you flash a rom not designed for the phone, or format the bios partition and then reboot (with out installing a new bios), but even then I'm sure you can install stuff from a pc over usb using that program.

Thanks New to Android as I have been an avid iOS user and jailbreaker for a few years so just catching up on rooting and flashing ROMs n stuff. But good to know it can be done as i Have the exactly same phone from Vodafone Australia. Better to be safe than sorry and ruining a 2 day old phone.

No worries mate, this is my 2nd android phone (first was a nexus s).
I learned a lot by rooting and playing with custom roms on that ph, but I have been really happy with stock jelly Bean on this (albeit rooted) device. Battery life is great, and it's a snappy phone with great features.
FYI I just read an interesting article Why Apple Won't Divorce Samsung today that explained how Samsung make all the chips for Apple products. You can't go wrong with Samsung mate.
Android users on this forum are generally friendly and Damn knowledgeable too.
Enjoy your new phone!

OK. The fact is that Vodafone and Telstra get all their updates later. This is because of the better 3g signals they have built in the phone. So due to this their updates come out a little while later. Also it depends where you are in the world (eg. UK, AU, USA) because the UK has already got the update as far as I know. So there is two options here to stay with Vodafone if something does go wrong so you have a backup. And referring to what Unlawful had said he is right you do need a stock Vodafone ROM or features and such can go wrong. BTW I am also with Vodafone but running a custom ROM.
Thank mate. I updated it manually, months ago.
The Gnex is an awesome phone (I upgraded from a NEXUS S), and with stock jelly Bean (rooted) with stock kernel it runs smoothly and is stable.
I miss rge Wolfson audio chip of the nexus s though bc audio recordings are terrible and crackling with the gnex.
Fast charge is something that I now need and otherwise I'm satisfied!
Hi,
I recently installed JB and rooted my GN using this tutorial (youtube.com/watch?v=1y3Lm6feyGI) and a few other infos picked here and there (including xda). It worked perfectly. BUT here is the thing: I had a GN GSM (I'm in Europe) maguro/yakjuxw running 4.04. My goal was to install JB 4.1.1 JRO03C which I did (and it runs like a charm so far). Now, when checking in Google Maps the version, I find 'takju'.
My question is: is that 'normal'? I mean installing JB had to change the version or is it something wrong I did like picking the wrong file or option in the GN Toolkit? And when I'm at it, is a rooted GN able to use OTA (and should the GN running a specific version for that)?
Thank you guys
Eric
When you flashed to Jelly Bean, you used the images directly from Google, which made your phone "takju". That just means from this point forward you'll get updates quickly directly from Google.
Root doesn't block your ability to get an OTA. Taking the OTA will make your root go away unless you use an app like "OTA Rootkeeper". Things that will stop you from taking an OTA are a custom recovery, different radios, modified/deleted system files.
If you have custom recovery, you can keep it and flash the OTA manually and keep that custom recovery. You just can't accept and auto-install an OTA.
Changing variant does not effect you in any bad way. It gives you benefit of being ota from Google
So the answer is yes, don't worry about it
Swyped on my Galaxy Nexus running AOKP with Franco Kernel
Broke my Nexus 5 display and the insurance replaced it with a G3 (because the Nexus is out of production). So, things are a little different here from what I can see.
First off: Branding and Bloatware. New things for me coming from the Nexus family. There, I only needed for flash YAKJU over TAKJU (or something like that - was a long time ago) for the Nexus 4 and you were completely in LGs hands regarding updates. No other intermediaries or stains from other carriers. The G3 being a Vodafone terminal it had a lot of branding.
To get rid of branding I went ahead and rolled back to v10f, rooted and deleted the /data/.OP/VDF folder (after backing it up of course). Then updated to v20h. The result? Stock LG boot, sound, no VDF apps.
A couple of things remain though:
- the software version is V20h-226-01 . Why 226 and not EUR like I saw around here? Doesn't matter which stock ROM I put on it (bumped stock ROM). It still adds 226.
- default language is my native language from the start (Romanian). Why? Shouldn't it be English?
- still, the update center tells me I can install 18 apps, all Vodafone crapware.
I guess my question is, how can I get a pure international D855 without any carrier involvement? Is it even possible?
Thanks in advance.
You could roll back to kitkat, root, install TWRP, then flash a rooted version of stock lollipop. Should be the generic one. Personally, I use cloudy g3, which is still on 20F I believe, but if you want a 20H stock, try http://forum.xda-developers.com/lg-g3/development/stock-t2961073
That is the one I installed and that is the procedure I used to be rooted, bumped and lollipoped.
Doesn't matter, still v20h-226-01 appears, still VDF apps in LG update center bugging me to install them.

If you can get by with just not seeing the notification, just long click the notification, hit app info, and untick show notifications. Not exactly the solution you may want but at least it won't be an eye sore.
