[Q] [D855] branding regardless of ROM - G3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Broke my Nexus 5 display and the insurance replaced it with a G3 (because the Nexus is out of production). So, things are a little different here from what I can see.
First off: Branding and Bloatware. New things for me coming from the Nexus family. There, I only needed for flash YAKJU over TAKJU (or something like that - was a long time ago) for the Nexus 4 and you were completely in LGs hands regarding updates. No other intermediaries or stains from other carriers. The G3 being a Vodafone terminal it had a lot of branding.
To get rid of branding I went ahead and rolled back to v10f, rooted and deleted the /data/.OP/VDF folder (after backing it up of course). Then updated to v20h. The result? Stock LG boot, sound, no VDF apps.
A couple of things remain though:
- the software version is V20h-226-01 . Why 226 and not EUR like I saw around here? Doesn't matter which stock ROM I put on it (bumped stock ROM). It still adds 226.
- default language is my native language from the start (Romanian). Why? Shouldn't it be English?
- still, the update center tells me I can install 18 apps, all Vodafone crapware.
I guess my question is, how can I get a pure international D855 without any carrier involvement? Is it even possible?
Thanks in advance.

You could roll back to kitkat, root, install TWRP, then flash a rooted version of stock lollipop. Should be the generic one. Personally, I use cloudy g3, which is still on 20F I believe, but if you want a 20H stock, try http://forum.xda-developers.com/lg-g3/development/stock-t2961073

That is the one I installed and that is the procedure I used to be rooted, bumped and lollipoped.
Doesn't matter, still v20h-226-01 appears, still VDF apps in LG update center bugging me to install them.

If you can get by with just not seeing the notification, just long click the notification, hit app info, and untick show notifications. Not exactly the solution you may want but at least it won't be an eye sore.

(Solved +/-) [Q] Missing LG Quick apps

The strangest thing happened to my G3. I had it rooted and since i was having a few problems with bloatware from my carrier MEO from Portugal) i decided to install the stock version to see if i could get rid of it. Installed .kdz file for V10a-EUR-XX and did a factor reset.
After that i still have all the bloatware of my carrier but lost root and all the Quick apps from LG (Quick Note, Q remote, and probably a few more and cant remember the name). Now getting it rooted again is easy, but where can i find those apps again since they aren't on Play Store?
Can someone help me out?

Solution i found was to install a new firmware, installed the V10g and the apps where back and the bloatware was gone.

How to root official Lollipop - actual solution

So, the other day I got the 5.0 OTA on my rooted 4.4.2, and I naively updated it, without knowing that:
1 - I'd loose root and my recovery
2 - There's no way to root 5.0
After two days of trying stuff, I finally understood what many people know, I suppose, but I couldn't see it written clearly anywhere, so I thought I'd share. You have to:
1 - Flash back 4.4.2
2 - Root 4.4.2
3 - Flash a custom recovery
4 - Flash a rooted 5.0 from custom recovery
I now have a rooted 5.0
Here. It's not very complicated to do, but maybe it's so obvious for people who know it that they never care to put it like this (I'm not complaining, I actually did find all the information I needed on XDA and learned a good deal of things about my phone on the way so it's cool).
You cant.

Sorry I lack experience so much with the forum that I posted without any content initially so you must have thought that I was asking for the solution. I get that you can't simply root 5.0, but you can actually get 5.0 rooted if your phone has 5.0 non rooted by switching to 4.4.2 first, which is really what people want to do when they ask that question. I have seen your answer before, and almost gave up trying, but I'm glad I insisted. Just saying "you can't" is just being deliberately unhelpful (or not knowing what you are talking about).

Yeah, there was only name of the thread and word "So"
So I thought you were looking for solution
Some more information on how to get there:
To get 5.0 rooted, you need to:
- take note of which 5.0 version you have on your phone and check you can get the bumped image somewhere, if you want to have exactly the same at the end.
- update LG PC Suite or at least the Windows drivers for the G3? Honestly I'm not sure how important this is, since I was playing around for hours and I did that in the process, maybe it's necessary. It is necessary to have the drivers installed at least.
- find the 4.4.2 version of the ROM for your phone (mine was V10e-EUR-XX), versions are different for 16GB/32GB versions.
- flash it with Flashtool (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2785089)
- root using your favourite tool (I used one I had on my PC, not sure which version but PurpleDrake should do: http://forum.xda-developers.com/lg-g3/development/root-root-lg-g3-easily-purpledrake-lite-t2821000)
- find a TWRP image
- flash TWRP (I used this tutorial: http://www.phonearena.com/news/How-to-flash-a-custom-recovery-like-CWM-or-TWRP-on-Android_id53914)
- find the bumped version of 5.0 for your phone (mine is V20e-EUR-XX and I found it on this forum)
- flash it using TWRP
- start the phone and set it up (it should be rooted already)
- install the SuperSU binaries using TWRP
Fun and heavy Titanium Backup freezes ensue! My phone has now 80% battery left 8h after being disconnected from the charger this morning, as opposed to 60% after two hours just after installing the OTA update.
Note: this was done on the unlocked 16GB European D855 version I bought in the UK. Not sure about other versions!
Bonus: in order to improve my battery life, besides Titanium-Backup-freezing the hell of the LG bloatware (I think McAfee and LG Health are the main culprits) and some Google bloatware I don't use (Google Play Apps anyone?) I also disabled knock on by following the advice #8 in this tutorial: http://www.androidauthority.com/lg-g3-problems-517832/
I've read all about the problem with rooting the G3 Stock Lollipop Version.
But there is no info, where I can find out WHY it is how it is.
So, why is 5.0 actually unrootable? And will this change in future?

Ummm. Have you tried looking on XDA?
There was a BIG post with details. The technical part is here: link
No, this won't change. Restricting services to their context means that bug in almost any service won't be able to compromise entire system. That's a great security feature, actually.

[D850] Lollipop Update not found - Unlocked Phone

Hi,
I bought a LG G3 from Ebay which was blocked on AT&T for using it both in the USA and in Europe (I choose this model for its frequencies supported). It is a D850 model as you can expect.
After receiving it, I unlocked it to run different carriers. I rooted it as well.
I want to install the AT&T 5.0.1 update from OTA (I don't care about root right know). But I have one big problem. I keeps saying that my software is up to date which is wrong. Is it because I'm on T-Mobile right know and AT&T blocks the update ?!
I'm using build D85010d. right know and I never had a software update notification. I've tried to set my phone date to a couple days forward as suggested by Android Police. No luck.
I just want to have the update. After that if it says "you are rooted, you can't install", I will unroot it and reinstall.
Is there any way to update manually ? I heard it's impossible thanks to AT&T.
This is beginning to irritate me.
Thank you in advance

have you found any solutions to this? i'm using an unlocked att G3 as well (although not blocked) and I can't figure out how to update. i even tried to put someone's ATT sim in it and it still said it was up to date, which is completely false. god i hate att. can't update, can't use Qi charging, can't do anything.
I can't update my lg g3(d855) too. It's have the 4.4.2 kitkat and i want upgrade it to 5.0.1 lollipop.
Plzz help if u find a solution to this problem
Same issue .......how to update to lollipop manually ....................... if someone can help it will be appreciated :good:
I am having an issue with the AT&T Lollipop update, as well. I bought a D850 from eBay on KitKat 4.4.2, and when I inserted my AT&T MVNO SIM and checked for updates, it found the Lollipop update. It started downloading, but about 2/3 of the way through, the display shut off (I had it set for 15 minutes). When I got the display back, this action had stopped the download, and it did not continue. Now, when I check for updates, it just says I have the current version. I have run system resets, and tried a different AT&T SIM, but I can't get the Lollipop download again. Does the start of a FOTA download set a flag somewhere that prevents re-downloading?
Only thing I could think of is asking for a .kdz file for your phone and carrier and then flashing that using the LG Flash Tool
unable to update D850
I have the same issue. I have a D850 AT&T version and my is not showing any update available. I am in 4.4.2. Any solution how to update? Please help. Thanks to all
I'm another victim of this. Have someone found a solution? I'm desperated. And sad, I feel scammed.
At&t LG g3 d850
Hi, I'm New in the XDA forum.
My name is Neeraj
And when I saw your post, I found me.
What ever you do please don't do custom rom update.i found that in a hard way.
Like you I too bought one from ebay, at&t logo but unlocked, and while trying to update says it's up to date.
Later I found out I need at&t SIM to update the phone. Because it's only network unlocked not the entire phone. It still got some sorts of at&t restrictions.
Any way I went and rooted, installed twrp, and cm13 6.0.1 then Walla my phone goes into reboot loop and when it finally opens up the network doesn't work.
By the I'm in Australia , temporary residence and I don't have at&t SIM.
So good luck and infact i'm hoping some one will guide me too
I fixed it, don't know exactly if it will work on others.
But what exactly I did was search Google download official stock rom for at&t LG G3 D 850 ( KitKat or lollipop), flash the rom and Walla got my IMEI number restored and it fixed my boot loop problem.
Then backed up by all data, IMEI, etc and then flashes back to custom CM marshmallow. Now all is well. ?
Hope it this will help some one aleast a newbie lie me

Invalid Software Package & Rooting questions

Hello XDA,
I got an LG G4 gifted, and as one of the first things I want to do is to root it. However I seem to have quite some difficulties with it.
My previous phone was a Nexus 4, and I simply rooted with 'Nexus Root Toolkit'.
For this phone there appears to be many, different ways to do that.
First thing I need to be sure is what exact model my G4 is.
In 'Phone Info > Hardware' it simply says H815. In the LG Mobile Support Tool it says H815B (Which gives no result on Google). The phone is from Germany if it helps.
Second thing is that it says I can update to SW version v10c. But when I download the update, it simply throws a 'Invalid Software Package' error at the end of it. The LG Mobile Support Tool says I have no update avalaible instead.
Third thing is that I don't remember if I have to unlock the bootloader to root my phone (did that only once on my N4, forgot if it's needed). If yes, can somebody link me to the appropriate page? (I've read around LG itself released a tool to unlock that?) (Also, I will loose all my data IIRC?)
Last thing, obviously, the most appropriate Root guide for my model. I've read many of them, one requires you to have linux on your PC (Which is a nope), others mentions '10c' (which I suppose is the update I'm unable to get). So far I got myself only very confused. (Root voids warranty? IIRC LG still covers phone with root?)
Thanks in advanced for your help
EDIT: Currently trying with LG Bridge software, seems to work and says my phone is H81520A (So I suppose the part after the device code is the 'SW Version' ?).
EDIT2: Apparently updating with that software worked. Now on v10c (Marshmallow 6.0 - Unless there are other updates waiting)
You can indentify your model by adding your IMEI to the following link: csmg.lgmobile.com:9002/csmg/b2c/client/auth_model_check2.jsp?esn=
(look for the field buyer)
The unlock process is described in this thread.
But don't fash SuperSu If you are on Android 6.0, because it will fail to boot. First flash an custom kernel (like this) and then SuperSu.
If you're unable to unlock the bootloader, then there is no possibilty to get root on Android 6.0.
Thanks. It says DEU at the buyer line.
D(eutschland)EU(Europe) I suppose.
And thanks for the link. In the kernel page it says 'download 20a or 20b? What's that number? So I need a Kernel that inclused SuperSU as flashing it on its own will cause that problem in few words?
What about this? http://forum.xda-developers.com/g4/development/repack-kernel-root-android-6-0-t3232387
From what it seems, it's a custom kernel + root. Would I still need to unlock the bootloader? Perhaps using the 'LG Site' section from the thread you linked (http://forum.xda-developers.com/g4/general/unlock-bootloader-install-twrp-root-t3128241)?
The software versions are quite strange on lg phones. 20A was the first test version that was released in poland. The official version now is 20B but phones with a branding have different versions. For example my phone has a vodafone branding and has the version 20A, but it is the same as unbranded 20B. (so it's really strange some times)
Look what is written in the settings under software information.
You need to unlock your bootloader to root your phone on Android 6.0 (this will void your warranty). You're right, it seems that SuperSu is already integrated in the kernel so you don't have flash SuperSu separately. But i am not complete sure because i didn't unlock my bootloader.
Thanks a lot for your help.
I managed to unlock the bootloader, but then I fuffed up..
Accidentally installed SuperSU (Was following that guide, and forgot about what you said).
Now the phone is kinda stuck at the very start, with the LG Logo (Not the animated one, the very first one)...
I'm hopeless now? D:
EDIT
I'm trying to recover with this video (LG G4 KDZ Firmware Restore Unbrick and unroot tutorial -- can't post links yet..)
But the LGFlashTool throws an error at 9% (imgur link -- can't post them fully yet) imgurDOTcom/pR1NYHD
EDIT2
Apparently I'm trying to flash a KDZ with Android 5.x while I'm on 6.0, which is a no. Will try with a 6.0 KDZ if I find one...
Else I hope for LG assistance (Or Amazon support, since the phone is less than 1 week old)
EDIT3
No luck with KDZ, but now the phone is going past to the animated logo, but being stuck there..
EDIT4
This saved me: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=63843511&postcount=146
Worked perfectly, my phone is back and fully working
Sorry, i wasn't online the last couple of hours, but i'm glad that all worked out for you

No problem, you were of great help.
I'm currently not trying to root until there is a safe procedure to do so for 6.0
I don't think that there will be an easier option in the near future. You can make a backup with twrp and try to flash the kernel again.
Mmm, currently I have only the bootloader unlocked. No root, no custom recovery.
I don't feel like to play more with these stuff in the near future, after I nearly bricked the G4
Perhaps later on.

KitKat, Rooted with Purple drake, update OS will i loose root

OK I have a UK Vodaphone G3 (LG-D855) still with their bootloader but it is rooted using the purple drake method which i did about 9 months ago, I think now is the right time to update the OS, so should i go via the OTA route and go to Lollipop or wait and go the Marshmallow or given i have rooted do i have to use another method to upgrade the OS.
Looking at my "Update Centre" it says the following "New OS Version: V20f-DEC-22-2014 (522.49MB)"
I am happy working with PC's but know very little about phones so please be gentle with me.
If you need any more info from me just ask.

Do not upgrade via ota when rooted this is a big no no can cause big problems.. If you want a new update just flash a kdz (stock rom) with flashtool. There are plenty of guides on here on how to do that.
v20f is a very old update the newest is 21a..I would probably wait for Marshmallow according to rumors it should be with us about middle of December .:good:
Edit here are a couple of links for you flashtool and guide >>http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2785089 << Kdz stock roms >> http://lg-phone-firmware.com/index.php?id_mod=41 <<
Also when you are rooted you can't take ota
OK many thanks for the info tallman43 and also thx for the links, looking at the link with the rom's i'm unsure if i should go for number 520 as it say V10l or 530 as mine is Vodaphone 16GB, or does it not even matter?
Also one very newbie question if i may these "roms" are in PC talk just images of a pc when it comes out the factory, all have windows 7 for example but some will have different apps preinstalled depending if it was Dell or HP etc, just trying to get my head round it "my way" if you get my drift.

V10 kdz are kitkat roms V20 kdz are lollipop roms obviously if you want the latest firmware then V20 is the one to go for. Also if you look through all the firmware's not just uk you will find 21a kdz this is the very latest one. Also you don't have to specifically use the uk ones technically you can flash any I am from the Uk and have used 21a without any problems.
Only thing I would say is if you flash one from another country try for ones that are closer to uk ie: Don't flash lets say a HongKong firmware but places like Poland,Spain,France etc are ok but like I said you could technically flash any.
Also in answer to your last question about pre installed apps yes some of them may have odd one or two different apps installed in them by the carrier.
One last thing if and when you use flashtool make sure you do not unplug your phone until it as fully flashed and rebooted flashtool sometimes comes up with a banner saying something like can't connect or failed. Look at the progress bar on your phone this is the best way to see if it is flashing ok.
OK mant thanks tallman43 you've been a real star with all this info.

Another thing - custom ROMs are faster than stock work various improvements, so flashing a custom is highly recommended.
