[REQ] Map Search Button to App Switcher CM9/AOKP - Epic 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I know I've seen other posts about this but not a new topic. ICS has very good persistent search. However, I find I NEVER use my search button. Is it possible to re-map the search button to bring up the App Switcher?
The long press on the Home Key is much less convenient and I find half the time I attempt to do it it simply returns me to my Home screen.
Someone mentioned that this mod is available to the Nexus S. Using the Galaxy Nexus I found myself constantly using the App Switcher soft key.
Would anyone else find this extremely useful? Anybody able to take this on?

i'd also find this really useful. i know i can long press the home button but i always end up going back to the launcher and reopening the app.

I asked this in bodi's thread since he seems to have taken on these little mods for us. I link to it when I find it so you can see he's looking at it

I'm actually surprised this isn't a default mod for all these ICS ROMs. Seems like it is a big feature of ICS that isn't fully utilized with our phones. Maybe it isn't a simple mod?

I use my search key, for search. If they defaulted it to this I'd seriously stop using cm9. No joke.

I don't think they should *default* to this (unless maybe if you enable persistent search), but i think it would be a nice option or a mod. For people that use the persistent search it is a bit redundant and I find I switch between apps much more frequently than performing a search. Personally, I would like the option to switch/define what a short (and long) tap on that button performs to either:
1. Normal Search
2. Voice Search
3. App Switcher
btw, I didn't think your post was a joke.

It would be great of cm9 implemented a toggle between search and tasks for people who don't search and do.

Mods for CM9 and AOKP for the Search Button to App Switcher are up.
Check out this thread.

[REQUEST] Add Search Soft Key with Long Press = Voice Search

Going from the DInc to GN, I am seriously missing the search soft key.
While some mods enable this, they do not enable a long press to go straight to voice search. Therefore, the only way to voice search, if I don't want to use the Google Search Widget, is to press the search soft key at the bottom, readjust the handset in my hand if I'm only using one hand, and then press the voice search button at the very top of the Search dialogue.
Can someone please make a simple mod that will add the search soft key, but also with the ability to long press it to go straight to voice search?
Many thanks!
Also, if you'd like to see this mod, +1 this thread to keep it on top.
+1 how is this feature missing?!?

Any way to port a standalone mod so others may enjoy? I've seen a number of threads pop up regarding this.

****Scratch that. I lost task bar & soft keys... Going to give the rom that is compatible with this a try.
What about long press to start an app of your choice?
Yes that would certainly work. Help, anyone?
+1 really miss this from my dinc days

This would be great...I am using the SoftKey mod here:

It is awesome, but this would take it to the next level.
+1 on this
I'd like something similar, but I don't have a search icon (don't need it), I'd like to long press on home to get Voice Search.

Disable part of touch screen--possible?

The backlit "search" button on the lower right of the t989 screen gives me no end of trouble. Several times a day, I'll accidentally press it with my palm while doing any number of other things. This interrupts whatever I'm actually up to and always causes me have to start over in, for example, the middle of a long forum post.
What I'm looking for is some way to disable that particular key. Is there an app for that? Or some other hack?
Thanks,

I recently installed CM 9.1 on my T989. Searches during the last few days have revealed 9.1 as the most recent stable CM for this phone, and "hardware keys" isn't anywhere in these settings that I can see. What's the trick here? From what I can tell, CM10 isn't available for the T989. How new do I need?
It is most certainly available.

"software" home button

Hey guys,
First what a nice forum is XDA! EX-Iphone user here, just bought and rooted+flashed CM10 nightly on my galaxy S3. A couple of bugs for some days, but now everything is working fine.
But there is one more little thing There's any chance to "emulate" or create a "gesture" to replace galaxy S3 home button ? I hate hardware buttons, on iPhone there was a Cydia tweak called Zephyr who alowed me to create screen gestures to perform any action.
and on android ? there's any chance to do that ? something like a gesture from bottom of screen or remap Menu button to something like: Two Taps it works like Home Button, one Tap it shows menu.
Thanks in advance and sorry for my bad english and my lack ok knowledge on Android world. I just arrived :good:
possible if you flash the (older) nexus JB rom, that's the only time I came across software home button

PSA: Fix for slow Google Now (YMMV)

Google Now was very slow on my Galaxy Nexus, I've tried everything. Today I was playing around with custom launchers and dpi settings and voila I found a fix. It works for me but hopefully it should work for you. If you are using a custom launcher, make sure "Persistent Search Bar" is set to always. I've disabled this since the ICS days as I've only wanted a search bar on one screen, so I assume a lot of you have as well.
I set this to on and Google Now is flying. Almost instant.
hmmmm interesting....i din think that would b the reason...thx
I see no reason that would have any affect on Google Now.
I was surprised at first too. I spread this fix on a different forum and about 20 people or so have confirmed that it made a difference for them.

That makes sense it keeps Google search in the back ground. Google now is Google Search
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using Tapatalk 2
Correction. Doesn't affect Google now. I m on rasbean. G.now used to load in about 1.5 sec, still takes the same time. If I keep g.now off, search loaded in 0.5s from swipe up. Same with this.
THIS. IS. NEXUS.
I'm running Liquid JB with Nova Launcher.
I did noticed the HUGE slow down, as it would almost take a good 10-15 seconds for GN to fully load up.. And even then the voice search was horribly slow.
Just tired this little tidbit and it works like a charm now.
Yeah, dingokevin's got the right idea.
Having the "persistent search bar" basically keeps the QuickSearchBox.apk in the background memory. Google Now is run off of that same .apk, so it is also run in the background. The search bar in the launcher is an app that has to be called by the launcher, and thus keeping the search bar keeps Google Now.
Unfortunately, I'd like to find a way to do this without the search bar. I feel it ruins the look of the desktop.
Great find! I've been battling this problem for a long time. I'm using paranoid android running nova launcher. Thanks!!! This fix should be stickied!!

I've always had persistent search bar turned on and have always found Google Now to be slow. If this fix really works then I can't imagine how slow Google Now must have been for people who disabled it lol.

This is a good hint, turning off hot word. Also I got to looking at google now and turned off traffic, wonder if this will help with the google maps wakelocks.... hmm.
This doesn't do anything. Been running Now without persistent search bar since day 1 of JB and never ANY lag.
where are the settings for hot words? I can't seem to find it in the google now settings

I know I should be doing more research on my own.
but I've search on google and also XDA. most of them "enabling all apps for shortcut (multi-view)" i have to flash my note 2. Does anyone know if there is a way to add additional APPS without flashing?
Based on my search, I am sure the answer is pretty much a No.
