Google Now was very slow on my Galaxy Nexus, I've tried everything. Today I was playing around with custom launchers and dpi settings and voila I found a fix. It works for me but hopefully it should work for you. If you are using a custom launcher, make sure "Persistent Search Bar" is set to always. I've disabled this since the ICS days as I've only wanted a search bar on one screen, so I assume a lot of you have as well.
I set this to on and Google Now is flying. Almost instant.
hmmmm interesting....i din think that would b the reason...thx
I see no reason that would have any affect on Google Now.
I was surprised at first too. I spread this fix on a different forum and about 20 people or so have confirmed that it made a difference for them.

That makes sense it keeps Google search in the back ground. Google now is Google Search
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using Tapatalk 2
Correction. Doesn't affect Google now. I m on rasbean. G.now used to load in about 1.5 sec, still takes the same time. If I keep g.now off, search loaded in 0.5s from swipe up. Same with this.
THIS. IS. NEXUS.
I'm running Liquid JB with Nova Launcher.
I did noticed the HUGE slow down, as it would almost take a good 10-15 seconds for GN to fully load up.. And even then the voice search was horribly slow.
Just tired this little tidbit and it works like a charm now.
Yeah, dingokevin's got the right idea.
Having the "persistent search bar" basically keeps the QuickSearchBox.apk in the background memory. Google Now is run off of that same .apk, so it is also run in the background. The search bar in the launcher is an app that has to be called by the launcher, and thus keeping the search bar keeps Google Now.
Unfortunately, I'd like to find a way to do this without the search bar. I feel it ruins the look of the desktop.
Great find! I've been battling this problem for a long time. I'm using paranoid android running nova launcher. Thanks!!! This fix should be stickied!!

I've always had persistent search bar turned on and have always found Google Now to be slow. If this fix really works then I can't imagine how slow Google Now must have been for people who disabled it lol.

This is a good hint, turning off hot word. Also I got to looking at google now and turned off traffic, wonder if this will help with the google maps wakelocks.... hmm.
This doesn't do anything. Been running Now without persistent search bar since day 1 of JB and never ANY lag.

If you're on AOKP (possibly other ROMs...haven't used them), you have the option in ROM Control > Navigation bar > Button glow animation to turn off the receding glow animation on the navigation buttons. With the glow turned off you can scroll to a far home screen, hit home, and watch the animation smoothly slide you back to the center screen. It also fixes the stutter in the animation when leaving the app drawer and may improve the speed of the multitask button (I think it does, but that might be placebo). One last fix I've noticed is going back between graphics-intensive screens in apps such as in the Market seems much smoother than it is with the glow enabled.
For those concerned about losing the feedback that the glow provides, the bottons will still flash blue when pressed; all that changes when you remove the animation is the receding glow.
This was already known like weeks ago and AOKP is the only ROM you can do that on.

works but weird how entering the app drawer is slower than exiting it

I still see complaints about it scattered about various forums so I don't think the knowledge is as common as you seem to think it is. Thanks for clearing up the other ROMs question though.
People need to use the search function that's why!
Its a common issue on XDA, clutter.

The day before I noticed I had a weather notification in my notification tray that looked amazing. I'm assuming it was stock since I have no weather apps or widgets installed but now the notification is gone. Does anyone know why or when it shows up or how to get it back?

This is apart of Google now.
Edit: In order for it to reappear you have to turn Google now off and then on. I believe since this is a alpha build everything is not worked out so Google now is not fully functional

It is presumably supposed to open up the weather app for you when weather changes or you move to a different location with different weather. I don't think you can make it a persistent notification.
further info on this issue
I had the same issue/question - this is the only thread I found in a day of searching. The stop-Google-Now-restart method didn't immediately work. Looking under Google Now settings in the weather settings there is a notifications toggle that was set to off. The other option is "low priority". Toggling Google Now off-on alone without this switched will not work.

Hey guys, something has really bothered me lately. The whole OS is so smooth and all, but everytime I leave an app or leave the app drawer then opening it again has a very nasty lag that is a very big turn off. I searched for this issue and saw that I wasnt the only one who had this problem.
Here is the same lag on the Nexus 7:
http://youtu.be/cK8n54YiabE?t=4m55s
and on the Galaxy Nexus:
http://youtu.be/qN3EXAFRxKQ?t=4m23s
Could anyone tell me how to why this issue is found on Jelly Bean and how to fix it? I'm on stock 4.1.1 btw.
get apex launcher and turn off the app drawer fly in animation.
i noticed this too,but only in the first page of the app drawer...

Dude, how can you even count that as lag? I run Ubuntu 12 on my laptop and it lags like ****. I run Windows 7 on a high-end desktop.. it lags like **** sometimes. There is seriously about 0.1ms of lag there, get over it.
Does it bother you that it takes several seconds for your web browser to open XDA? "Damnit, this bothers me!!! The interwebz LAGS!!!"
At first I thought you were running ics which does have lag, then I saw the nexus 7 video. I watched it and started laughing my ass off, there's not even a slight bit of lag in that. And my device doesn't lag neither.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda app-developers app
Maybe my eyes are lagging, I missed it.
I can't believe people are so obsessed with micro lag that is not even visible to 80% of people. Suck it up already, no need to tell the whole world about how your app drawer launches 0.1 mill second slower. Its not the end of the world.

Yes, but not when opening the drawer, but switching to the next page.
And I wouldn't call it laggy, it just reacts with delay to the swipe. The swipe itself is perfectly smooth.
SMH.
I saw it!
Oh, no wait, I didn't. You crazy, bro.
Have you tried setting window animation scale, transition animation scale, and animator duration scale in settings --> developer settings to 0.5x or 0x at all?
I know exactly what you're talking about, so don't worry about everyone else. Unfortunately I don't have a fix for it either.

Even that lag is nonexistent if you wait a split second to scroll after opening the drawer. It's called the launcher has to populate the apps and widgets on first launch/scroll. If you launch the drawer and go for the first scroll "as fast as you possibly can" then you're just purposely looking for a microsecond of lag to complain about.

How did you get that to work? I tried setting the 'Lock timer' in 'Lock screen' under system settings to various settings other than 'immediately' as well as 'power button instantly locks' to on or off to no avail. All that happens is when I turn the phone on, it just immediately shows the app I recently had open.

It's possible we are describing two different use case scenarios. Do you have 'enable security lock' enabled in holo locker settings?
I would like it so that I can specify a lock timer in system settings to only bring up the pattern unlock after a set amount of time while at the same time always bringing up the holo-locker screen when I press the power button to turn the screen on (before the pattern/pin unlock comes up). As far as I know, the built-in slide to unlock won't show when you have a pattern or pin lock enabled (non-rooted). Sounds confusing when typing it out, does what I'm trying to describe make sense to anyone?
Not sure. I just cleared all my credentials and got the swipe back.

OK, I don't know what I did, but it finally started working the way I wanted to. Strange, I tried rebooting, waiting a while between turning the phone off/on, different setting configs and nothing seemed to work. Thanks anyway, just glad it works now.

I never had much use for it. I keep Google Music, TuneIn Radio and PowerAmp widgets on my music page. I use them as needed.
My issue with page buddy was that it "intelligently" decided what apps to show based on what you used the most frequently (or recently?) while in that mode and didn't give you option to manually add apps to the page.
Sent from my SM-N900T using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
I never really used Page Buddy on my Note 2. That was partly because I didn't really find it too useful and also because I used Nova launcher, which automatically got rid of Page Buddy since it was a function of the Touchwiz launcher.
Spotify, PowerAmp as music widgets. Nothing else matters.
