The backlit "search" button on the lower right of the t989 screen gives me no end of trouble. Several times a day, I'll accidentally press it with my palm while doing any number of other things. This interrupts whatever I'm actually up to and always causes me have to start over in, for example, the middle of a long forum post.
What I'm looking for is some way to disable that particular key. Is there an app for that? Or some other hack?
Thanks,
Q

I recently installed CM 9.1 on my T989. Searches during the last few days have revealed 9.1 as the most recent stable CM for this phone, and "hardware keys" isn't anywhere in these settings that I can see. What's the trick here? From what I can tell, CM10 isn't available for the T989. How new do I need?
It is most certainly available.

Flashed attached zip via recovery. This will disable JUST the search key.

That zip file did the trick. Thanks everyone, and especially Elsbb for the simplicity.

I have tried to find a thread with this info and SORRY if there is a thread with this info about it.
I have installed CM9 A5 and i am noticing that the FN .com key does not work on the physical keyboard and seems all the rest work just fine. I don't have a problem with typing in the .com, but would like to have it working.
Is there fix for it?

Thank you for your reply...I will have to stop being lazy and type in 4 more characters.
It works if you hold it and press the character you want. But if you flash a custom kernel I think it fixes it because I stopped having problems after flashing samurai kernel... the one for alpha 4 works for alpha 5 because they made changes in the rom itself not the kernel

He means specifically for Sym/.com. Sym key seems to be a tab key now.

I was actually just looking for a solution to this myself. I found this thread about key mappings. It looks to me like some people have remapped it so that buttons like fn and the emoticons do different things but still not what they are labeled to do. Perhaps I am missing something and the TouchWiz rom allows for these buttons do do what they are marked to do but CM7 does not even have the ability. I would love to get the keys working properly though if it is possible.
I know I've seen other posts about this but not a new topic. ICS has very good persistent search. However, I find I NEVER use my search button. Is it possible to re-map the search button to bring up the App Switcher?
The long press on the Home Key is much less convenient and I find half the time I attempt to do it it simply returns me to my Home screen.
Someone mentioned that this mod is available to the Nexus S. Using the Galaxy Nexus I found myself constantly using the App Switcher soft key.
Would anyone else find this extremely useful? Anybody able to take this on?
i'd also find this really useful. i know i can long press the home button but i always end up going back to the launcher and reopening the app.
I asked this in bodi's thread since he seems to have taken on these little mods for us. I link to it when I find it so you can see he's looking at it

I'm actually surprised this isn't a default mod for all these ICS ROMs. Seems like it is a big feature of ICS that isn't fully utilized with our phones. Maybe it isn't a simple mod?
I use my search key, for search. If they defaulted it to this I'd seriously stop using cm9. No joke.

I don't think they should *default* to this (unless maybe if you enable persistent search), but i think it would be a nice option or a mod. For people that use the persistent search it is a bit redundant and I find I switch between apps much more frequently than performing a search. Personally, I would like the option to switch/define what a short (and long) tap on that button performs to either:
1. Normal Search
2. Voice Search
3. App Switcher
btw, I didn't think your post was a joke.
It would be great of cm9 implemented a toggle between search and tasks for people who don't search and do.
Mods for CM9 and AOKP for the Search Button to App Switcher are up.
Check out this thread.

Hey guys,
First what a nice forum is XDA! EX-Iphone user here, just bought and rooted+flashed CM10 nightly on my galaxy S3. A couple of bugs for some days, but now everything is working fine.
But there is one more little thing There's any chance to "emulate" or create a "gesture" to replace galaxy S3 home button ? I hate hardware buttons, on iPhone there was a Cydia tweak called Zephyr who alowed me to create screen gestures to perform any action.
and on android ? there's any chance to do that ? something like a gesture from bottom of screen or remap Menu button to something like: Two Taps it works like Home Button, one Tap it shows menu.
Thanks in advance and sorry for my bad english and my lack ok knowledge on Android world. I just arrived :good:

I know I should be doing more research on my own.
but I've search on google and also XDA. most of them "enabling all apps for shortcut (multi-view)" i have to flash my note 2. Does anyone know if there is a way to add additional APPS without flashing?
Based on my search, I am sure the answer is pretty much a No.

Trust your instincts.
I feel your pain, XDA search sucks sometimes.

Anything is possible. If you wanted to add a full size dish antenna to your phone, it is possible. If you wanted a 800mm telephoto lens on your phone, it is possible.
More info?
Are you asking if you can change which actions occur when pressing the hardware keys.

I read a thread that enabled me to go in and disable the keys in the usr folder using a text editor. Was having serious ghosting issues and wanted to try something new. I would think it would be possible to change the usr key character code to execute whatever you want it to do, or am I way off base here? Just my thoughts. Just do a backup and give it a shot!

Yes you could remap keys in the sec/keylayout files. If you just want the same 4 but rearranged then just move the target around in the existing file. If you want other commands it'll be a bit more tricky since you'll need to locate the execution command for the new target which can involve decompiling the apk and searching the trigger word for the app you want called.
