I thought it was a bad choice before, but a recent Engadget article on naming schemes reKindled my disappointment.
The previous two Nexi were named Nexus x, now we have a x Nexus. Galaxy Nexus doesn't roll off the tongue like Nexus One or Nexus S.
Sticking Galaxy in the name means that I, along with many other people, will now associate the device much more with Samsung than with Google, so they're failing to build the Nexus brand.
I don't know why they didn't stick to Nexus Prime. It's one of the best product names I've ever heard. If Google put out an advert that just said 'Nexus Prime', I'd research it simply because of the awesome name.
Here in the UK, plenty of people know that the Galaxy S2 is Samsung's top-dog device. That means that some people will now assume that the Galaxy Nexus is just another of Samsung's cheaper, crappier Galaxy x phones like the Galaxy Ace, Galaxy Europa, Galaxy Mini etc.
The naming choice combined with the lack of specific information about availability makes the Galaxy Nexus one of Google's biggest marketing failures so far.

This.
I mean, I don't think it's that big of a deal, but I was disappointed it was associated with the Galaxy lineup too. Not sure why they wanted to do this, or why Google would allow this.
I don't see it as that big of a deal. People who are familiar with the nexus brand will understand this is a nexus device that is part of the galaxy lineup.

but that's exactly the problem with it. only "people familiar with the brand" know what it is. the name isn't helping draw more people in...

It could also work in the opposite direction. Since the Galaxy name is now well known, adding the Nexus can bring awareness to the Nexus line as well. Of course, there is always the risk of "Nexus" being associated with the cheaper like the "Ace," but being part of the Galaxy series will definitely bring about a more familiar name.
I think its pretty clear Google has allowed Verizon and Samsung to slap them around and take over there Flagship Android device. What Nexus One aimed to be...and what Galaxy Nexus is warrant for a total change in name. For they are nowhere close to standing for the same thing.
Google should name it iNexus and a looooootttt of people will buy it
I personally like Nexus Prime a lot more. "Prime" makes sense because it is the first device with 4.0 on it. Its funny how the next-gen Asus Transformer tablet is called "Transformer Prime."

Meh. The name will have little or nothing to do with what phone I choose. That's a cosmetic thing. And if I were worried more about cosmetics than functionality I'd choose an an Apple product.
Maybe they couldn't use Nexus Prime because to my knowledge, isn't there a tablet called Prime or something that was just announced. Maybe they got the rights to use that name before Samsung or Google did. That's just my idea.

Ha! That should be HTC's bid for the next Nexus
I like Galaxy Nexus, it makes it sound like by using the phone I become the center of the galaxy. Think: nexus of the galaxy, or galactic nexus.
I hated the Nexus Prime name, and I for one am glad that's not the one they went with. To me the problem with the something like "Prime" is the same problem with the whole "Droid" image that Verizon went with: it has such a niche appeal, that it's limiting the appeal of the phone for no good reason. I am so glad that this phone has nothing to do with "Droid" or with "Prime".
I liked Nexus Prime better then Galaxy Nexus but in the end its just a name and doesn't matter.
I will say this though, outside of maybe the "Droid" brand, the "Galaxy" brand is the most well known line of Android phones.

You may have missed the point? The article over at Engadget is actually quite good: http://www.engadget.com/2011/11/11/editorial-the-problem-with-bad-product-names-and-what-we-can-le/
It's a bit of an overkill to say Google made a mistake.
I do much prefer Nexus Prime. But then, I'm male. I know the Transformers. And I think the association with "Prime" and all it's masculine images of being a Prime are bloody cool. However, apart from being damn cool, it may not get the most recognition.
Anyone that wanted a Nexus device, already knew about it and will get it even if it's called the Nexus MV88PM+. People outside the tech circles will not know what the hell it is and who made it. It has no branding on the front.
Someone alluded to Google bending over for Samsung. Well, Samsung don't have their name on the front, and only have it on the back under Google's name. After chatting with a friend that works selling phones, many people know the Galaxy branding and can often just want one of the Galaxy line-up simply because they trust the name. In the same way people trusted the Desire line-up in the UK and the Droid branding in the US.
Galaxy - Jo Public understands.
Nexus - we understand.
None of the names are offensive. Both mean something to different groups. Naming seems sensible to me. Not explosive, but very well judged. "Safe" as Engadget may have put it.

"marketing failure"? I can't remember more fanfare/hype for a device since the iphone. Intentional or not, the way things have panned out so far have worked! Nexus Prime was never an official name, it was a "guess" a joke by some one on the internet, then every one stuck with it
Yes, it would have been better to call the new Nexus 3 as Nexus Galaxy, than Galaxy Nexus
but what's done is done, there's no going back
so now i hope the next Nexus 4, they will make it better, and name it something decent for a change, or maybe be simple and call it Nexus 4 which will go very well with the Quad core CPUs, or maybe Nexus Quad
either name will reflect perfectly on the model
what do you think?

It would be really stupid for google to do that because it would completely ruin the nexus name as being the bar setter for that OS which is what google has always referred the nexus devices to be, also sprint confirmed (I think, correct me if I'm wrong) that it will ship with a 1.2 Ghz processor

This just isn't Google's way. They release a Nexus 1 time per year. They wouldn't trump their Nexus with a tiny spec bump 4 months later.

Its not a fake photo. It may however be a spoofed. The Sprint GN will probably be released around June, a half year+ after the original release. I think its more stupid of Google to release a half year old phone to such a supportive carrier (only carrier with GV integration and official Google Wallet) than to refresh the specs and piss off some users. You would have had it for months, and it will likely be unavailable on other carriers anyway.

I don't know what to think about this one. On one hand, it seems like plenty of sites and people have been complaining that the hardware specs should have been buffed a little bit, so I could see it happening. On the other hand, this seems like an incredibly unpopular thing for Google to do.
I was about to pull the trigger on buying one tomorrow, now I think I'll hold off until the dust settles on this story.
Additionally, it would be pretty f'd up for them to release a clearly superior model on Sprint and give the finger to the Verizon and GSM unlocked versions.
My opinion: Not going to happen.
Galaxy Nexus is fast enough (and will get faster with Android 4.1, 4.2, 4.5 ...) and there's no reason for Google to do this at all.

Same goes for the Nexus S on AT&T. There's no reason for Google to fragment their Nexus line, and piss off their loyal customers. Google really has no real gain in doing a refresh, so why would they. They chose these specs to offer a specific experience with their devices, not be apart of some spec war. The most Sprint customers would get differently is a slightly bigger battery; I don't expect anymore than that.

It's not Google that does this. This is entirely Samsung's doing and Samsung own a lot of rights for this phone. Samsung got their name on the phone, they got it called 'Galaxy Nexus' instead of 'Nexus Prime' that was the original name and it made some deals with some carriers for customized versions of Galaxy Nexus.
Sadly it is out of Google's hands.

What does everyone think of a possible LG Nexus? I've never been wowed by any of their devices thus far. Anyone have first hand experience with the quality of their devices?
yes i just came from the tmobile G2x, what a horrible device. specs were good, build quality of the phone was good. just horrible support from LG and Nvidia. phone shipped with vanilla froyo, was updated to vanilla GB with same froyo kernel (after a lawsuit was filed) never fixing any of the widespread issues. nvidia would not release source, they said ask LG. LG said to ask Nvidia. for a while tmo even pulled the device from stores, later bringing it back as a free device.
Although I'm not a fan of LG phones, I trust Google's decision whatever it may. As Nexus owners we buy the device for software... mostly.

Why would Motorola get preferential treatment? They stated explicitly that Motorola wouldn't. Motorola hasn't put out any great devices in a long while, in my opinion. If meental is right, LG would be a fine manufacturer. All they need to worry about is quality hardware. Google will take care of the software.

The OG Droid and Xoom are considered Nexus devices by some.
I don't want LG to make the next Nexus. Their phones typically suck, especially when it comes to build quality. Samsung should do it again.
Should probably fix title to say "LG" not "G".
LG is the absolute last manufacturer I want making the Nexus.
And is this really news? Every manufacturer is in talks with Google to make the Nexus. They all shop designs to Google to try to be the reference platform.
Like someone else has said earlier in this thread, I completely trust Google in making the decision. Most complaints about LG phones are about LG's support (although I have never owned a LG phone in my life). LG makes the phone and Google is who supports it. Not to mention that Google chooses all of the innards so all there is to worry about is the phone's design and build quality. Let's be honest, Samsung makes great phones but other than the nexus, what Samsung phone had great build quality? There may be some but from my experience with Galaxy S it felt pretty cheap like it would shatter any moment not that it wasn't a good phone. All I'm is that we won't know until they are given a chance. Samsung three years in a row doesn't seem like preferential treatment to any of you? That being said, I won't be getting the next Nexus. I'm actually waiting for the one after the next because honestly getting a new phone every year just isn't realistic for me. Just thought I give my two cents.

Honestly, I'm looking forward to what Motorola would come up with for the Nexus line.
I wouldn't mind moving on from Samsung. Nothing against them (at all. I like them, in fact), but I'd love to see other takes on the Nexus line.
I'd be willing to give HTC another go, even. But I'm most curious about Motorola. LG... I'm a bit wary of.
LG made the Chocolate. For that, I will never, ever let them down. Stay away!
Moto better make the next Nexus. The hardware is top-notch and if they tossed in a Maxx-like battery into the Nexus Maxx (see what I did there?) it would be 100% amazing.
And the car/desk docks would be available from day one, unlike the crap Samsung pulls. Where is my pogopin powered car dock? See what I mean?

They do make high quality hardware. I just hope that they'd make a non "Droid" looking model for the Nexus. Bring back normal corners and cut out all the chrome and ugly ****. I too would like to see a huge battery like that. Don't care if its not removable. By Q4 2012 with that battery technology they can push something like 4000mAh into a phone.

My problem with Moto is that they typically pick poor SoCs for their devices whereas Samsung consistently has the best SoCs on the market. Also, my previous atrix felt cheaper than the Galaxy Nexus. The only thing Moto has going for them, in my opinion, is their radio hardware/quality.

It intrigues me the fact that you can find the galaxy nexus online in amazon, new egg, negrielectronics for 450-470 $, the galaxy s ii which is at least 6 months older is more expensive, have the nexus sales been low? Maybe its because of the camera? The common folks don't wanna buy a " 5 mp camera in a phone, the iPhone has an 8 mp camera " has Samsung released the number of sales for the nexus?

It's only released in a few carriers. I don't think any Nexus line has been widely available and has always been a small user base.
It's timing was also terrible.
But really it's not a flop because it wasn't intended to be the bread and butter flag bearer of the android system, that belongs to the OEM's flagship devices. Pretty sure Google isn't interested in alienating the other OEMs.

Although keep in mind as of recently Google dropped support of the LTE (toro) build of the phone.
But you also have to keep in mind that the GSII is on pretty much every major carrier in the world now, which I'm not sure about the rest of the world but at least in the US has been very slow in terms of more carriers selling the phone (Verizon didn't get it until December, and Sprint's is going to start sometime soon).

And the nexus is just pure awesome. It hasnt been a flop for me
If it was a so called developer phone, it wouldnt be on sale to the public and advertised to the masses. It has developer settings but that seems part of ICS as a whole and even if it wasnt, it has no bearing on whether the phones a flop.
I havent seen anyone else with the phone where i live but I wouldnt call it a flop.
As for the phone itself, its a 6/10 phone masquerading as a premium device.
haha... sorry i had to start laughing on reading this thread^^
Before i got my galaxy nexus i had an Galaxy S2 and a Galaxy Note. And i have never been as satisfied as with my gnex.
I don't like Samsung's TouchWiz
i don't like their silly gestures in android that make no sense. (for example: shaking the phone for searching for bluetooth devices)
and so on...
The gnex is so smooth in everything i do even with the slower CPU.
If someone is still von Android 4.0.1... mhm... how to upgrade manually?
There is no KIES, just Odin and CWM... so upgrading is easy.
The GNex is no flop it's just Top!
This is a developer phone because:
Unlocking and locking the device manual is on Google dev page
If you mess something up you go on Google dev page download appropriate files and voila
Its the; only high end device on the market right now that uses only stock android
And most importantly all the software updates come from maker of the os and jot the carrier

This is a developer phone because:
Unlocking and locking the device manual is on Google dev page
If you mess something up you go on Google dev page download appropriate files and voila
Its the; only high end device on the market right now that uses only stock android
And most importantly all the software updates come from maker of the os and jot the carrier

None of those things change the fact that it's ALSO a consumer phone. As someone in this thread mentioned earlier, the Nexus is the developer-preferred device. Google has provided those features for developers to take advantage of if they wish. However, the phone is still aimed at consumers. It's aimed at the same people who buy iPhones, through promotions and advertising campaigns. Look at the Nexus adverts - do they mention 'stock android'? 'easily unlock your bootloader'? 'Factory images available to download'? No. 'Calling all pretty faces, now you can unlock your phone with a smile'.
It's sold free on contract with a large number of networks ('carriers') around the world.
And that's the way it's been since the Nexus S. It's time you people stop this 'developer phone, it's not meant for the general public!' stuff. It's simply not true.
Does it even matter how much marketshare the GNex has? I think the phone is great, it works fantastic for me .. I don't care how many phones have been sold (I only know one other person that has one, and he bought it on my recommendation) as long as it's what I want in a phone. Which it is.
You should go troll in iPhone forums and complain about the "walled garden" or something.
Member the GT-i9260 which is similar to the current Nexus.
Well it's the Samsung Galaxy Premier running TouchWiz.
This thread is for people who still has faith in the "5 Nexus phone" rumor.
Link that proves it:

Translate the page like I did.
Looks like Sony got something going. They seem to be building a Nexus. Could be fake though.
Edit: Sony nexus confirmed by Hoaxer himself that it is indeed fake.

If I have helped you.... hit that sexy thanks button. ^_^
Well we've kinda known this for a while, its just that no one was listening... There was never a single piece of convincing evidence that the i9260 was a Nexus, and it was pretty decently leaked that it was a TouchWiz phone.
I've never believed the "5 Nexus" BS.
But this thread is for people (as I stated) that are holding on to this rumor for dear life to ditch the LG Nexus 4 or LG Optimus Nexus.
And a link is there so they don't continue to hold on to it. Cuz I'm getting tired of reading this, "I hope Sony makes a Nexus. LG sucks." Or something similar. :sly:

I never bought into five devices. It seemed like something someone only wanted to be true.

There's already 3 devices on the Play Store. With the LG Nexus that makes 4. It isn't unreasonable that they will have a 5th before the end of the year so I don't see how the rumor was wrong.
Nexus 7
Nexus Q
LG Nexus
Nexus 10
?????
Yeah, this rumor was also out last year. Multiple nexus devices, wasn't true and probably isn't now.

didn't the stupid ass rumor start off saying the 5 nexus was for the top 4 carriers and the fifth one was straight from google unlocked. then it changed to some far fetching idiotic rumor about all these nexus coming out. how the hell am i supposed to make a call with a nexus Q? or the tablets? its ok for people to believe but damn don't go around spreading rumors about something with no hard facts or credible sources. it just ruins it for everyone else

Huh? All Play Store devices are unlocked. We are talking about what Google was going to put on the Play Store. It has nothing to do with carriers.
I'm just not a fan of the phone looking the same for the past 3 years.
I'm moving on purely on the notion of aesthetics. I'll miss the pure experience though. Form is finally catching up to function though with Android.

There were two beliefs for this rumor. 5 NEXUS phones. Or 5 Nexus Devices.
I was talking about the rumor is dead for the 5 Nexus Phones. And there are ppl out there that still believes this 5 Nexus manufacture BS.

Never buy something again from LG!
And it has no AMOLED, thats another nogo for me!
I'm still going to hold out hope for a 5th phablet sized device, until reality or someone from google slaps me in the face directly.
Lg an HTC sell garbage devices, no amount of Google input will ever change that.
I want to buy HTC's one.

Go for it, the only good thing about it is the camera.
I'll hold judgement on the LG Nexus, usually their software is what makes the phone horrible, but if the battery life is good and the build quality is at least decent, it'll be fine.
