So I've had about 7 different android phones, flashed tons of roms on em', but there has never been a consensus on the 10 minute rule.
Some rom makers recommend you wait 10 minutes to let the phone "set" before you do anything to set it up. But others don't mention it at all.
Is this 10 minutes absolutely necessary, and whats the point?
Do you do it?
Thx
That was more for older phones. Doesn't really apply to newer phones since they are so much faster and have a ton of memory

There's not necessarily anything that will go wrong if you boot up for the first time after a flash and just start doing things...
But it can't hurt to boot up and let it "settle" for a minute, do a fix permissions (I like to do a nandroid backup of the clean ROM too) and a reboot, and then customize things. Just good process to follow.
It was to allow stuff to cache so it doesn't lag like **** and make the rom seems ****. Rebooting after 1st boot solves this also.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using Tapatalk
I don't follow this anymore but I also don't immediately tinker with the phone after flashing. It would not hurt at all to do some waiting though. It pays to be patient once in awhile.
Wasnt it just because the dalvik cache has to buold upon first boot?
I'm really new to this but I figured out to be patient and let things settle.. :screwy:

Everyone is going to have different preferences and different results (even on the same model phone), but I have ran most of the ROMs currently out there for our phone and right now I am in love with AOKP with Faux kernel. This is the best my Nexus has ran since I have purchased it.
I just recently started using AOKP and I am not turning back.

Isn't it funny how things have changed over time.
Let the ROM settle. (no longer matters)
Use Task Killer to manage multi tasking (now bad for the OS)
Use battery calibration software on a new ROM (google says it does nothing)
This is the evolution of things and I assume it will continue to change.
Sometimes change is good.. Hopefully Google can make ics even better. But the devs are way ahead! Lol

While poking and prodding around I found this one click ex2 lagfix for the I9000 and also the Fascinate.. I tried it and it works for our Continuum's also.
Before Lagfix
Quadrant - 1028
After Lagfix
Quadrant - 1770
Antutu Benchmark - 3140
I did not have a chance to test Antutu before I did the lagfix.
Either way here is the link to the file. Make sure you have root, Sammy USB Drivers, ADB, and the latest version of Busybox installed. Turn on USB Debugging and plug your phone into your computer. Unzip the file and double click on 'Lagfixme.bat'.
Follow the onscreen instructions.

Glad it's almost 5:00pm. My phone is totally hosed after running this. Won't boot at all. Hangs for a long time at "Verizon Wireless" bootanimation then goes to black screen. Vibrating incessantly as if it's constantly fc'ing something. I figure I should be able to flash from Odin and start fresh.
Peace,

EDIT: Flashed pastor's DL17 and I still have nothing. I may have a brick on my hands...

Okay EXT2 is scary, how about EXT4?
You can't afford for your things to get corrupted? Weirdo. Real world performance between EXT4 and EXT2 is barely noticeable if at all, for the everyman this is probably your best bet.

As for the memory issues, the default for the Continuum is much higher than many of the other phones. I put together a little "How To" specifically for the Continuum. Just be careful, because I have seen issues with background apps, that I want to keep running, closed by Android. You really have to play with the numbers to see what works best for you. If anyone wants help with this, let me know.

It's in my OP here: FIXED! - Froyo ROM "closing" the background apps.
Keep in mind YMMV, I would adjust the settings using AMM (Auto Memory Manager) from the market. Because of the aforementioned problems (yes zipalign helped a little bit), and all the friggin' apps I installed and use, I have actually gone back to the default memory settings. I'll start playing with them again starting this weekend. As a System Administrator, I just can't leave well enough alone... My wife doesn't like it when I mess with my phone because I grumble so much when the thing hoses up... It's my fault, I know... But...
Hello all, I am looking for a touchwiz rom that has full capability and has great battery life. I have tried synergy, but it doesn't play nice with the AT&T S3 for me. What are some other ones that you guys recommend? Thanks.
No one can determine the best ROM for you as we all have different needs for our phones. Additionally, each phone may react to every ROM differently. My advice would be to try out as many as you can.
This link can be a good place to start researching.

The link I provided should be a good point of reference for gauging people's thoughts on ROMs. Reading and trying them yourself is honestly the only way to know.
try roms is all you can do. personally I like wicked v8. I give roms a one strike and youre out rule. if one thing doesnt work good enough for my needs its gone. I wanted to like synergy but it gave me a few issues. maybe I will wait a month or two and see what else comes. ive had great success with wicked and devils reject roms. I have friends using intergalactic and it also seems good for them. my battery life is better than ever on wicked but of course it all comes down to usage and tuning. most important to choose a rom that works.
I like CSROM. The battery life is great and you have good aroma install options for things like aosp messaging and email. It has good mods like tethering, toggles, etc. Also very good support from the Dev and others in the development thread.
I was looking for same thing dude actually I'm still looking.I have been try Synergy and CSROM but they are not what exactly I want . Synergy has really cool staff but they got a lot of issues with SGH-i747 simultaneously. I was trying to install Synergy rom it took my 3-4 hours beacuse I couldn't fix every problem with Snynergy after than I found a fixing uptade file and a kernel it started work okey but it still had bugs. I just decided to try another.
Now I'm using CSROM they don't have a lot of cool thing like synergy . They have some diffrent touchwizz from Sony and Motorola. They have multiwinow but my battery is working sucks . I have 2 battary but I have to get charge 2 times in a day it's mean 4 charge for a single battery.I'm not sure about all this things I'm just saying my experiance. Maybe I could do something wrong but they are my opinion try anotherone except those ::highfive:
Make a nandroid of stock and your IMEI, then flash and try them all !
Devils reject and csrom are my favorites as far as twiz roms

Every phone is different. Every user is different. While a rom may work great on one person's phone it may be the opposite for yours...even with the exact same specs and hardware. The opposite can be true for other roms. And the way you use the phone differs as well. There is no "....is the best rom.". If you are not happy with the current ROM, then try another.
I'll give you three of the best IMHO that I've used extensively.
#1 Xtremperia by Jovy23
#2 Darthstalker X1 by Jovy23
#3 Deadly Venom 3.0 by Venom
All three are bug free and extremely stable with excellent battery life. I use the Ziggy kernel with all three.
At this point I'm running Hyperdrive multiview w/ Ziggy and I have Synergy w/Ziggy as my back up.
Yes they both have minor bugs but are easily fixable.
That being said the VERY first thing I would and this comes from an expensive lesson I learned BACK UP YOUR IMEI FIRST!!!! If I've helped please hit the thanks button and happy flashing.

The other reply covered it pretty good as it's different for everyone. I see a lot of people posting about battery life and I would suggest the following. Charge your battery to 100% before you go to bed. Take it off the charger and then just let it sit overnight. When you get up, check the battery stats and see if it goes into deep sleep, meaning it wasn't awake when the screen was off during the night. If you see more than a few times where it was awake, you probably have wakelock issues. If so, use Better Battery Stats to find out what's going on. Sometimes its the media scanner hanging up on a pic or vid that isn't playing nice, sometimes it's something else.
I have my mail synced 24/7 as well as contacts and calendar. I play games for about 10 minutes a clip throughout the day and browse xda and google news and I get about 20 hours with 2-3 hours screen on time.

I use stock debloated. Easy and no worries.
I recently flashed a ROM by Koragg618 that is simply a stock rooted version of touchwiz t989uvmc6. I let it sit for 10 minutes, rebooted to recovery. I then flashed the cymbaline kernel. I then used setCPU to get my processor settimgs to my liking. Downloaded titanium backup and used it to take off all the tmobile and samsung stuff I didnt want. Then I used greenify to hibernate the rest that I didnt want running. Doing these few simple things has made my phone smoother, faster, more bug free, and better battery life, than ANY custom rom i've flashed in the last 6 months. I wish I wouldve known it was this simple from jump. I feel like I have a whole new phone now, and I can just flash whatever custom mods or apks I want, one at a time, instead of trying to get them all in a custom ROM. this is the way to go!

I have tried to install every kernel and cannot install any of them. I'm on wicked Rom, using twrp rc2 version to flash and every time it just won't boot. I get past everything and it will hang on the last screen right before Android boots up and then boot loops. The phone vibrates. And that's it. I check my md5 sums. Wipe dalvik and cache. Then sometimes I don't wipe anything and just install the kernel. Same results. What in the world's could be going on? Every single kernel will not boot.
I am so stumped. Please give me some ideas. PLEASE. BECAUSE I AM OUT OF IDEAS. I just downloaded the new twrp and in going to try that. I will report back.

We have been testing this. Seems some phones (mine included) hate OC.
As a few of you know i've been testing every rom known to man on various phones for years, and this is the first time we have had a phone that hates OC. There are a select few that have phones that pull it off. I went thru all 5 Kernels that are available (plus 2 that i'm working on) and i get the bootloops. All i can say is, work in progress and hopefully we can figure out why the phones are doing this.
Even stock frequency kernels are boot looping though....Some of the kernels I tried don't even have oc support.?
Sent from my SM-N900T using Tapatalk
Well I was able to get saber kernel green to fully load this morning. So I wonder why the other kernels will not. There had to be a reason.
Sent from my SM-N900T using Tapatalk
That's weird, do you clean wipe every you install a rom. I've been flashing through twrp 2.6.3.4-.6 every time had worked and I don't see why it shouldn't. Which way did you root?
I must have gotten a good phone then because I have not had any problem flashing anything. I'm using TWRP 2.3.6.0 (the one that Goomanager downloaded) and I've even been able to OC to 2.7Ghz. I am counting myself lucky then.
I had the same problem. Imoyesen the dev for LeanK gave me the explanation and it has something to do with what dragon said. I flashed 6 in a row including all of his builds and same as you. Then he pmed me a version and boom running lime a dream. Since then his past 2 updates have been perfect for me. It had something to do with PVS0. My phone and yours is probably pvs0 wcich needs a bit more voltage than a pvs1. You can get a phone with anything from 0 to 6 and you dont know which one you got until you flash a kernel. Lol insane. Any way I was gonna return my phone and try another but I decided to deal with it. Im not a linux engineer so please if you want to know tthe details ask someone knowlrdgable in this field dont take my word for anything as I am only relaying a message and orobably half assed at that.
So it looks like kernel devs will have to make a kernel just for us loosers with pvs0 phones and a seperate version for the guys that can handle heavy tweaks.
N3 anticipating Tweaked perfection
---------- Post added at 04:51 PM ---------- Previous post was at 04:28 PM ----------
My understanding is that its moreso the voltage than clockspeed that is the culprit. I just tryed oc to 27 and no issue yet. I dont oc because this phone is plenty fast for me and I just want battery life. I guess maybe the kernel devs are lowering the v on their kernels out of the box to aid in battery savings but its too much for our phones to boot with. We need a higher v maybe as high as stock to boot with then adjust from there with your favorite control app and find your sweet spot. Just guessing here hopefuly someone can give a real explenation.

My understanding is that its moreso the voltage than clockspeed that is the culprit. I just tryed oc to 27 and no issue yet.

Interesting info, how do you identify which pvs model you have?

I don't think the recovery version is causing your problems as I've been able to boot any kernel I choose, or all the way up to 2.65, and flash whatever ROM I've tried. Now I do have the n900w8 but still, same hardware underneath.
To me it sounds like Samsung went with a few different binnings for their chips and some people just got the ****ty ones that, in all realitt, a holder have even been used but they wanted to pump out as many phones as they could? May be one answer at least, though it doesn't help come up with a solution
have you guys tried different roms at least? Same problem Or no?

No I havent tryed any honestly im waiting for my favorite rom to come out in a couple weeks then I will. But I dont think its going to make any difference. Its just a chit chip I guess and the kernel devs will hopefuly not forget us misfortunate ones. It is what it is I guess im not gonna beat it over the head anymore I decided to just deal with it.
Honestly im happy with LK right now at 6 hrs screen and 30hrs total. Indont I don't care about over clocking as this phone is plenty fast for me anyway. I only care about smoothness and battery lige with this phone and im happy with both right now. My note 2 I opted for the zero lemon and lasted me 4 days with 15 hrs screen. This phone I want to leave it stock and thin as it is a geourges phone imo. It bothers me when every evening I have to search for a charger and I havent had to do that yet so im good. Thanks

Yea I had that battery too act u ally 2 of them. We need to let the kernel devs know about us and maybe they can make kernels that use stock or even voltage increases at boot so we can at least get into android and make the necessary voltage increases before bootloops.
This worked for me the other night. I got red to boot and quickly rushed to the app I use to change voltage, hoping to increase 100mv across the board but I couldn't do it fast enough and bam bootloops, and no more booting into android any more
. So I had to restore my backup.
Maybe these are just kinks that have to be worked out. I mean the phone is barely a few weeks old and the devs are still learning. So we have another 3 months before I expect them to get the hang of things. So to speak. This phone has been by far the most temperamental device I have ever purchased from samsung.
If we don't have a working kernel in a few months I'll definitely be buying a refurbished device from somewhere for cheap.

I have had this phone now for maybe 4-5 months. Coming from a nexus 5 I am really upset. The lag on this device is god awful. I cant even carry on a hangouts chat because the typing is so laggy. I constantly have to go close my recent apps to try to recover some ram in order to make the device speed even remotely bareable. My nexus 4 was crisp and snappy as was my nexus 5. I very rarely experienced any slowdown and now I am stuck with this device that is just so horribly slow.
Has anyone experienced this? Is there a way to fix this? I may just go plunk down to repair the faulty power button on my 5 and just use that. A much nicer device that cost me less than the 5x.

What have you tried already to speed things up? Also, what rom build are you on? I presume stock? Rooted or not?
The first thing I would suggest is a factory reset and/or flash the latest factory image.

I am on stock. not rooted. I have not rooted a device in some time. Perhaps the time has come to get back into the custom rom scene if only to increase performance.
I have tried deleting unused apps and cleaning up my storage space to see if that helps but it has not. I am on 6.0.1 of the stock rom.

What build number? Settings > about > build number.
I would still recommend trying a full wipe after being at least on the March build.

These threads annoy me. Especially when people haven't rooted or unlocked their NEXUS devices. Half the point of these phones is to unlock and root them without having to work too hard or get in trouble from your carrier. I don't think I owned this phone for more than a few hours before flashing a new ROM on it.
Many other people have had the same complaints as you and after spelling out the steps they should take to unlock, root, flash a new ROM and kernel, they're often much happier with their devices. The RAM thing is a joke, tbh. I think a lot of people read the threads and articles about how "The New Nexus 5 successor only has Two Gigabytes of Memory?!" and now everyone blames that on their slowdowns and lag issues.
Take some time out one night and unlock your phone, flash the newest radios, vendors, custom recovery, etc and flash a custom ROM. It's a breeze. If you ever did it on your original N5, you'll have no trouble with this phone. There are plenty of great ROMs to choose from. Then, if you'd like, flash a custom Kernel as well. The performance will be night and day. If you'd like to take it further, check out the Interactive Governor Tweaks thread and download a profile or two from there. It really improves the battery life and performance in most cases... All is not lost, my friend. If you do what I explained I am confident you will be much happier with your phone.
Exactly what Alcolawl said. The only reason I ever booted the stock ROM was to check "Allow OEM Unlocking". I am coming from a 6P and I have noticed absolutely no lag or stutter. The phone is a bit creaky, which I expected at a low price point, but the hardware is excellent. I didn't think anybody bought a Nexus and didn't unlock it and root it.

Totally get where you guys are coming from. I used to root every device and flash custom Roms all the time. I was flashing custom roms on the G1 before most folks even knew what android was. I still have a Nexus 5 in my closet with paranoid Android on it as well as a 2012 Nexus 7 with paranoid Android that got so dead without charging that now it won't even boot. Man really wish I could figure out how to fix that one.
My point is that I guess I've gotten used to not having to play with custom Roms(or having any desire to) My hope was that I wouldn't need to get into all that that's all. I'll go through and unlock/root and flash some Roms and that will be that. Thanks for the advice.

I ended up clearing cahce on a lot of different apps and also realized that esfile explorer has a recylce bin. It was storing all my deleted files. Cleaned that out and whoosh, fast again. Still think I'll root and play with some Roms though.

If you go through with all this and flash a custom ROM & kernel, let me know how it compares to stock would you? I have a rooted/unlocked 6p which I LOVE but my wife wanted something easier to handle so we got her the 5x. Her's has similar issues overall but unfortunately she's not really for me messing with her phone (sigh, I know lol). Anyways, am curious for an honest opinion, especially with a pure Nexus/ex kernel combo as my 6p works a dream with that Just figured I'd ask if ya happen to do it, otherwise no worries. Thanks!!

Awesome thank you!! Try a purenexus/ex kernel combo and let me know what you think! Also, what carrier are you on? Don't suppose Verizon by chance right? I only ask as I read a few posts in that thread about VoLTE not working, which I found odd as it works perfectly on my 6p.

I'm fully serious. My Moto X Pure wasn't working out for me so I sold it and bought this. If this phone didn't meet my expectations I'd buy a different phone. If the phone lags, sell it and buy something else that doesn't. It's not that hard of a concept to grasp.
