hi, i jus wanted to know the pros and cons of rooting my device and more importantly whether i might be able to recieve the ICS OTA update .thanks vvery much..
Rooting allows you to use your device to its full functionality with the risk of allowing you to damage it.
You can use custom ROMs which are greatly enhanced compared to stock ROMs. You can also overclock/undervolt your device, use apps like titanium backup and proxy droid which require root access, have access to system files etc.
The worst thing that can happen is that you brick your device but if you are cautious you can avoid this. Most mods come with guides so if you follow them and just do a little reading before attempting anything you should be fine.
You can probably receive the ICS OTA update but AFAIK HTC will only be rolling it out from the end of May, starting with Europe.
The best you can do
I was getting bored with the stock sense rom, then i rooted my Desire HD and installed several great roms (right now i'm using MIUI ICS) and I'm in love with my phone again.
Doing that reminded me why i bought an android and not an iPhone.
Just be careful, follow all the instructions and you'll be good.
Thanks to all of u for ur support. Can anyone please provide me a link or show me how to root and flash custom rom on my DHD running android 2.3.5. Thanks again

Hello,
I think it should works. This is using the Goldcard method. The goldcard is a general method which should not be dependent on the phone version !
With goldcard you can install other OFFICIAL stock roms.
In the field of Android custom ROMs, what a Gold Card does is letting you install ROMs on your Android device that aren’t intended for your carrier. For example, if you have a T-Mobile USA HTC Desire, you can install an official ROM intended for the O2 UK HTC Desire, or even a generic ROM that isn’t locked to a carrier. It does so by disabling the CID (Carrier ID) check that the device does when installing a ROM.

Using the goldcard doesn't need any root permissions. It is a htc way to use other official stock roms. First you try to downgrade to official stock rom 1.32.405.6 then try to root this version.

The waiting answer is not enough for me and the others , unless some one tell us if they works on it to figure out how to solve the root issue
thanks to all members in this forum specially the supportive peoples who give us that hope.
Am Still waiting since along time.. for a hope
i agree with you ,knowing someone is working on it is good and hopefull.

Can you tell us how? Because this software version seems to have patched the exploit used to gain root.
I tried to do it using zergRush exploit and it did not work.
same here...

I have the same issue. I could not find any ROM that really made me want to root my DHD until the ICS, but I just accepted the OTA for 2.3.5 few weeks ago.
Did anybody try this?

Got the same problem over here. I had an unbranded phone but my 3.5mm jack was corrupted (i guess just dirty or some wear on the pins) so they replaced my entire motherboard.
Guess what, they installed this vodafone-branded ROM and now im stuck with this stupid device only for a corrupted jack slot.
3.13.161.3? i dont know this base which country?
Vodafone has put it on my DHD this afternoon after a repair. Its a dutch store but maybe its vodafone-widely spreaded and then i guess its in germany too. I dont know other countries they use this ROM.
But im gonna hope the guys there will put an unbranded ROM on it. Or else it won't be a happy year for them.
Htc supertool worked for me!
I'm on 3.12.405.1 (also Sense3) .. but my phone was already Ship S-off first (from trying CM7 back in june).
Now it's time for ARHD or RCMix3d - yiiiipeeedeee!
doesn't work with 3.13.161.3, has anybody some more ideas?

don't know... but do giv it a try !!!
otherwise u can go for ARHD 6.3.1 ... it uses 2.3.5 and sense 3.0 .. and is exactly same as the official rom ... with some performance enhancements ... GUI is the same ...
The official update to sense 3.0 has patches to remove root so if you want to keep root, don't update

Yes i lost root anytime i went back to stock.
thanks guys, thats what i thought too, just wanted confirmation.
i love this site sooooo much, never been let down, xda NUMBER ONE SITE!
since I posted I ended up going stock 2.3.3 during the temp root process I ended up some how having a permanent root no joke. Even after a battery pull I still had root. Not sure how it worked or what I did but strange! I have witnesses to vouch.
Hi all,
sorry for my lack of knowledge, I'm a brand new HTC One X owner. I'd like to have the very standard software (ICS in this case) without the branding of T-Mobile. I've bought my phone in Poland (Europe Version).
Any step-by-step tutorials in here? I surely don't want to brick my new phone
not 100% sure on this but think only one way to debrand that is to unlock bootloader and root then install custom rom could be wrong tho

Well, I've got no problem with unlocking the bootloader etc. but I would like to have the normal ICS with HTC's Sense on the phone rather than some cyanogenmod or something along those lines. If anyone can help me out with the needed files and a step-by-step how-to (I'm not dumb when technology is involved, but I have absolutely no contact with the moding scene of Smartphones).

I think ARHD is meant to be pretty close to the standard sense experience. Cyanogen is a good release though, but maybe wait until its more stable on one x?

While i might instal this rom one day, I'd like to give the stock version a try. I don't want all the bull**** from t-mobile though The bootanimation alone is kinda ruining the experience for me

ARHD is a stock Rom tweaked to make it even better. you will find it much better, that is the only way to remove it, or rooting and flashing another boot animation
Easiest way I found was to unlock bootloader, root then delete all the carrier bloat you don't want and then flash a new bootanimation

Since you still opt for ICS the ARHD is the best alternative choice! Just search the thread on the XDA Developer you'll find it.
I have a T-Mob as well but flashed on CM10 for JellyBean and so far works great!
Guys I own a HTC One V for past 1 year. now since the warranty is over I am planning to root the phone and thinking of installing custom ROMs
The only issue is that I am completely new in this rooting/custom rom business. In other words I am complete noob.
Please make things simple for me and help me step by step so that I can root my phone.
After rooting please guide me in same simple manner how can I install custom ROMs on my One V?
Please give link of latest and supported custom ROM for One V? Which version is currently available for this phone? 4.2 or 4.3? Can I by any chance get 4.4 on this device?
Please guide!

I've wanted to say that HTC (as far as I know) is the only smartphones provider that let users unlock bootloader and root devices with step by step guide trough their official site. You have to google "HTC One V root" and search for htc.com site
I'm wondering why they won't sell unlocked and rooted devices
