Texts Not Receiving/Sending - Samsung Epic 4G Touch

I've had this problem a few times where texts from certain people (not the same people all the time) dont seem to ever reach my phone until a few days later. And sometimes texts from me do the same to them.
Is this a product of Google voice, or is this just somehow a problem with my individual phone?

Sometimes there's just a delay between carriers. I used to get it all the time on TMobile.

But it could also be the individual phone, bad coverage, or just bad luck.

This happens a lot with google voice sprint integration. Use the gv app to send texts, see if that Claras the issue. That's what I did and it seems to have worked.

It's so inconsistent for me I can't seem to find a pattern with when/how it happens. I spoke to people that I trust in a non-corporate Sprint store and they say that everyone who's had a similar issue has had an Epic Touch, so maybe it's the phone...?

I had it with a Samsung T105, a Palm Pixi, a Palm Pre, Samsung Epic 4G Touch, Samsung Replenish, Palm Treo, etc. It's something that comes up on a lot of different phones in a lot of different ways. Honestly texting in and of itself isn't a very reliable means of communication. It relies on your carrier assigning your phone with an email address in their servers. Whenever somebody sends you a text their carrier's server translates it into an email format then sends it to your carrier's server which then sends it to you. To get from one server to another it needs to be sent through repeating towers other computers, etc. If there's power outages somewhere along the line, network failures, bad signals, you name it, it could create a delay. Sometimes you can even get multiples of the same text.
For a good example of what could happen look back in the news at RIM's Blackberry service, they had a huge network failure that lasted for days.
Long story short is we're at the mercy of the carriers to keep things running smooth. Sometimes the phones may add to the issue but most often there's a disconnect or delay somewhere in the incredibly long cycle.

OK, cool. Thanks for explaining

Cannot receive SMS from AT&T after root

Hello all!
I've had this issue since I rooted my phone (with NAND unlock using Toast's method) back in the beginning of June. I noticed this issue IMMEDIATELY after rooting since my girlfriend is on AT&T. Recipients on AT&T can receive my SMS just fine, but I cannot receive theirs (I have tested multiple phones on their network)! Other carriers seem to work just fine as I have tested most of the popular ones although haven't tried T-mobile, could it be a "my phone versus GSM" issue?
I have wiped and factory reset my phone numerous times, used multiple roms including the rooted stock 1.32-1.47, OMJ's 1.4-1.7, and currently am on Baked Snack 9.6. Out of an act of desperation, I accepted the 1.47 OTA update before root with no avail. After all of this I have noticed one thing staying the same... The PRI Version 1.34. I know there is no current way to update this back to the stock 1.40, and too be honest am not really sure if this could even be the underlying cause of this issue because what does roaming have to do with receiving SMS on my home network? I've had multiple people tell me that they have had no such issues, and searching the boards shows me that this is definitely an isolated issue.
If anyone has any advice, information, or even has this issue as well please let me know! Any help will be greatly appreciated!

Well, after several phone calls and tickets later, I have now found out that the AT&T messages aren't even hitting Sprint's gateway (the front door of data). It's odd because the tech rep is able to see my messages out, but not able to see the ones sent back. This leads me to believe that it is in fact a network issue, and has absolutely nothing to do with my phone. He clarified that even if my phone was broken he would still be able to see the messages at the gateway, but they aren't even getting there. There is nothing more that Sprint can do because they can't reference something that doesn't show in their systems; so I'm being forced to call AT&T... I have already gotten the run around from both sides stating, "well it's definitely an issue on their network".
I'm not really sure what else to do, it just seems so strange that the very same day I rooted my phone, I stopped being able to receive their messages. The only thing left for me to do is try and get a replacement phone? and if I do that, do I root my phone again and risk being burdened by this issue again? I know one thing's for sure, after having a rooted phone for almost a month and a half, there's no way I'm staying stock!
Getting a new phone won't help you, it's definitely AT&T's network, or whoever owns the bandwidth connecting their (AT&T's and Sprint's) networks. Simple as that.

Thank you drmacinyasha on your quick replies!
I'm hoping to get my girlfriend's account information soon so AT&T will actually help me; I'm just worried that they will say the same thing Sprint has told me. I know it's as "simple as that" to state where the problem obviously lies, but I'm not sure how simple it will be to get a hold of someone who will actually be able to fix it.
My girlfriend is able to send SMS to other people on Sprint just fine, so I'm confused by the fact that this has only happened to my number.

Texts arriving late? ATT bigwigs on the case - please chime in.

I've had a problem where texts sent to me sometimes arrive an hour later. During the times when I'm having this problem anyone who calls me will go straight to voicemail. Outgoing call and texts are not affected. Basically it's as if the phone 'spaces out' from the network on occasion
Other members have reported similar issues.
What is known so far is that: It's not the SIM, it's not a network or provisioning issue.
Is it the phone? Is it the ROM? That remains to be seen.
I've gotten in touch with someone at ATT who is agressively pursuing the issue.
What you can do to help is, if you are having this problem too, please post here. Mention what ROM & kernel you are running, which state you are in and any other relevant details so we can see if it's a widespread problem. It is especially interesting to see if anyone running unrooted stock has it. Otherwise it could be blamed on the user
DEVS weigh in here - is there any way rooting can affect the GSM radios in this way?
I have problems sending texts sometimes and sometime I randomly lose service and the only way to get it back is put it in airplane mode or reboot i ve had this happen on all roms even stock I'm in tooele and data speeds suck there

I've had issues with call quality and texts not being delivered to one person, however I have not had any noticeable difficulties with other people, so I assumed it was an issue on their end. Perhaps not. I'm running stock rooted Android.
(They are also on AT&T.)
I've had this issue with AT&T since the days of Cingular. Makes me ::GLEE:: that my contract will be up in October, going to T-Mobile, unlimited everything (oh noes, data throttling at 2GB) for $65/month? Yes.
Also thoroughly documented here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1615761
I've had this issue with stock, Inception, and now OsiMood. I'm in KY. It seems that it'll randomly chooses to ignore all calls and texts for an hour or more, and when it finally decides to start working again, all those messages will show up at the same time and calls will start to ring through. People who call me claims that it rings on their end, so it seems like I'm just not answering the call, rather than going to straight to voicemail as if the phone was off, or out of service area.
~Azrael's Kiss~
Not quite the same
I had this issue with a moto bravo a while back where it would "send" the text but it would never make it past the network, also texts from phones wouldn't go through but I could receive AT&T texts (data usage, minutes left, email to text). Ended up taking about 3 days of talking to AT&T reps that finally did a hard reset of some sort and refreshed all the provisioning. The last tech I had spoke to told me it was because my phone was appearing registered on 2 different AP's (micro-cell / main tower) and that it wasn't de-registering from the micro-cell. Not sure if it helps any but it might give you a talking point for the AT&T techs who can seem less then helpful at times.
I've had the problem with stock and osimood. The problem isn't persistent, and Sometimes I think rebooting fixes the problem.

Rebooting does tend to fix it. As does cycling through airplane mode for like 15 secs. But sometimes it'll go right back into that zombie state after a few minutes.

I've called ATT and talked to them and they say powering down the phone once a day is the only way to fix it... with a cdma network I never had a problem with texts or calls not goin through... as as far as stock or rooted my wifes phone is the one that does it the worse and hers is solid stock. Mines not to bad but I do get the problem with texts not comin in that much but very annoying when I pay almost 200 a month and the **** works half the time. Tends to get really frustratin

For a while I had the problem of my captivate glide not ringing at all, but then the call gets forwarded to google voice and I see a missed call. This was pretty common until two weeks ago when I upgraded to ICS. It has not happened since.
Text messages always come through quickly. Occasionally the email-to-SMS gateway messages were delayed for about 10 hours, but I think it's been about a year since that happened, so I think they improved the reliability of that system.
I kind of blame the modem firmware (the curse of proprietary software). It have happened to me a lot whenever I am using Internet, and sometimes I receive the text immediately when I am online. I usually send text to myself to wake the cellular modem up.

I have the problem once in a while but its also a cause from my network provider as they are known for it and others I know have this problem on other phones.

True. Unfortunately, there's way too much variables within the cellular networks, making it difficult to blame on who and what. Same with WiFi.

I've had this problem on at&t when I had my Motorola back flip, and now also on my glide.
Also, the g/f has had the problem on her non smart phone.
It doesn't happen often, but it does happen.
It was happening a LOT during the time when at&t was upgrading their lines and equipment to deploy 4G in this area. (We've only had 4G a few months here)
In the past week, I've had it happen 3 times on my glide where I will get 8 - 14 copies of the same txt all at once, but the sender says they only sent it once.
This could just be bugs in the official ICS release from a couple weeks ago, idk.

FWIW, I'm on an MVNO that's on AT&T's network, but I'm using Google Voice for texting, and texts always arrive within seconds. I know that doesn't use the SMS system, but hell, I'm just trying to be helpful.
Isn't there a way to port your current number to a different carrier (i.e. Google) without breaking contract? I remember there being something like that, the stipulation being you had to pay some $$ in fees and get a new number (which you'd need for Voice forwarding anyway). Still a hell of a lot cheaper than an ETF.
I'm on straight talk which is mvno of att. It happens to me too.. stock, not rooted either

They MUST think I'm stupid...

Sooooo...here's the deal:
I'm in the Houston area. There is a constant LTE signal here, that I rely on for my tablet and my pc (paying overages doesn't matter). However, after every phone call, I lose LTE, and just the 4G signal is there, but its slower than 3G. After a reboot, the LTE comes back and my speeds are restored...
I tried chatting with an ATT rep, they of course tried to blame it on "spotty coverage and tower malfunction in your area". Yeah, sure. She said the reboot is re-registering my phone and picking up a new tower. After questioning this, she then put the blame on a rogue application. After that, she then started saying that if I travel I might not have the same signal. After telling her that this happens anywhere, even when I'm at home, she said started explaining the data that I've used this month, and that I have data left to use.
EDIT: She asked me to factory reset, and give it a try. I reset my phone, went through setup, and placed a call. After the call, no internet. I rebooted, LTE service came up. When I told her what happened after she specifically requested I perform those actions, she then told me that a factory reset phone may not work for up to 15 minutes. I'm officially done.
How about you guys? Anything remotely useful to add since apparently this isn't a common issue?

Call att. Go through their spiel. Then get mad cause they can't help you. Threaten to cancel your service. They well either cave immediately or transfer you to the dept that will give you what you want, which is a replacement phone. Btw, its called the customer retention department (for a reason).

it could just be a corrupted radio on his phone, i wonder if he just needs to change radios or odin the phone back to 100% stock
I knew it was normal because my other phone (GNex) does that as well...but LTE never comes back on my SGS3. I went back to stock a long time ago because although I hate the TouchWiz interface, i use the 'motions' ALOT (especially the direct call from messaging and the swipe to message/call), and even after going back to stock AND doing a factory reset it wouldn't work. Of course, I'm sure that as soon as I get into the store tomorrow its going to work like its supposed to, as always, but even though it doesn't seem like a huge deal because our phones boot up quickly, its still an inconvenience to have to reboot the phone after every phone call just to get my LTE back

I like that you fell for the factory reset; it really pisses me off when they tell me to do that. If it work yesterday and the day before and suddenly it doesn't work then guess what is not going to fix it, that's right, a factory reset. I know there are a lot of legitimate reasons to factory reset but they throw that out like it's nothing, as if I didn't just spend 10 hours setting up the phone just the way I wanted it. If the software is so easily corrupted then just give me my money back and I will go down the road.
That said I believe this phone is a wonderful machine but if you have a factory producing hundreds of units every hour they are bound to eventually have a defect. But every person who purchased in atrix 2 should have been given a refund and an apology.

What was so bad about the Atrix2?
This sounds like Samsung fault, hardly at&t.
It had issues addressing the SD card . It would often lose applications that you had installed, you also would not be able to access your music, pics, or videos on the SD card at random times. Everybody and their brother had a different solution for it. The biggest consensus is that it was class 6 and above causing the problem. But if that is true then motorola should have done their own beta testing and reported that. All in all the phone was a nightmare and there are forums filled to its failure. I purchase the atrix HD and it did the exact same thing.

I've recently been having issues, its happened here and back before but this time I'm not even receiving messages anymore. Before I would receive the messages hours late or a day later. Now I'm not receiving anything unless I send them a SMS. Even then its a slim chance.

None of that, my coverage is fantastic. I'm usually full bars on 4g rarely do I drop to three. No sim card issues and I'm sure that would not affect me as I think that's strictly a 4g thing.
This has happened on various ROMs and latest radio.

Try a reactivation. Dial ##72786#.
It's not the device (phone) its usually a carrier error happens when you have a weak signal and your phone is switching from 1x to 3g or 4G or between wifi and regular data. The others here are correct it is not the phone, unless the antenna is messed up. Have you also checked to see if the duplicate texts are always from the same individuals? It could weak signal on their part, their carrier or device is actually sending it out twice. I had something similar with texts coming in from att once.

I have been with Sprint since the beginning - about 14 years? I have also have had the original non data Airave and the latest Airave with data.
It is not your phone, maybe sometimes the Airave?, but the problem is with Sprint. Most of the time everything is normal, but then are times when I will get the same text an extra two and sometimes up to four times for a few days straight, then it goes away.
So save yourself the anguish of a hard reset or flash, it is not your phone and most assuredly Sprints network. Also note, it happens to me more frequently and of course randomly in the last 3 or 4 years.
I hate hard resets and re-flashing!
I had this exact issue on AT&T and it turned out to be an app that had permissions to intercept text messages to display an unread number on a widget. The app was blocking the phone from sending a text received signal to the tower.
I very much appreciate the responses. I realize what everyone is saying about it not being the phone and most likely being a sprint issue. I totally have been in agreement up until recently I started suspecting the phone. Like others here I have been with sprint for several years. I have also lived in the same area for all of those years. My phone doesnt roam, doesnt switch between 3 and 4g in my area. This is also my fifth android phone (first was the hero) and my 8th smart phone. I have over the past several years OCCASIONALLY received duplicate texts from one or more of my android phones. What I have experienced with my gs3 is far from occasional. It is constant. We are talking the same text repeated 18 times. It happens every day. Not once or a few times a week but literally multiple times every day. It isn't with one or 2 specific contacts but with multiple contacts included automated texts such as texts from twitter updates. It happened on a clean install. Flashed modem, kernel and ROM. All stock touch wiz sprint stuff. Not a single third party app installed. Previously I did the service reactivation and it helped slightly. I tried it again 2 days ago, roughly a week after flashing the clean ROM and I will say that it has helped a lot. Over the past 2 days I have only received one duplicate text and it only came through twice. If this was the norm then I would be more than happy. Time will tell if it is fixed or not and I will definitely update this thread.
The reason I suspect the phone is because of the immense frequency of the problem. My theory is that if the radio or antenna is weak or failing then this could be why the frequency is so high. Also, I have been experimenting with using the phone with and without the case on and it seems to be worse when the. Case is on. So, in theory if the antenna is weak then the case makes it even harder for the signal to get through. I could be off base but that's my theory.
Also, my daughter has my hand me down galaxy s2. She has zero duplicate texts. We live in the same house and go to the same places. Her phone has never had the issue. I dunno. Maybe the gs3 in general has a weak radio or maybe its my specific phone. Either way its totally frustrating and I doing want to deal with it any longer.

One note to your theory - your daughter has an S2 which although is 4G, it is WiMax 4G and your S3 is LTE 4G - your daughter's S2 will not have the same trouble as your S3 because the 4G WiMax towers have been up and running for a while, while Sprint is still working on the LTE 4G, so that could be one of your problems.
With that being said, I am sort of in the same situation, my wife doesn't have the text problem as often or severe as mine as she has an original Epic WiMax 4G and I have a S3 LTE 4G, although my worst case has been repeating text maybe 3 or 4 in a row and then sometimes the same text come to me like an hour to two hours later, but this only happens in spurts every once in a while, as the spurts of duplicate texts happen maybe every other couple of months and only last for like a day, then everything is fine again. I also have been in the same location for the 14 or so years that I have been with Sprint. Anyways, just a thought.
That's a good point. Maybe it has something to do with it. I thought that SMS used the phones voice network though rather than data? I thought only MMS used data. BTW I have never received a duplicate MMS. Also there is no 4g lte in my area yet.
Thanks for your thoughts.
