Cannot receive SMS from AT&T after root - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello all!
I've had this issue since I rooted my phone (with NAND unlock using Toast's method) back in the beginning of June. I noticed this issue IMMEDIATELY after rooting since my girlfriend is on AT&T. Recipients on AT&T can receive my SMS just fine, but I cannot receive theirs (I have tested multiple phones on their network)! Other carriers seem to work just fine as I have tested most of the popular ones although haven't tried T-mobile, could it be a "my phone versus GSM" issue?
I have wiped and factory reset my phone numerous times, used multiple roms including the rooted stock 1.32-1.47, OMJ's 1.4-1.7, and currently am on Baked Snack 9.6. Out of an act of desperation, I accepted the 1.47 OTA update before root with no avail. After all of this I have noticed one thing staying the same... The PRI Version 1.34. I know there is no current way to update this back to the stock 1.40, and too be honest am not really sure if this could even be the underlying cause of this issue because what does roaming have to do with receiving SMS on my home network? I've had multiple people tell me that they have had no such issues, and searching the boards shows me that this is definitely an isolated issue.
If anyone has any advice, information, or even has this issue as well please let me know! Any help will be greatly appreciated!

Call Sprint, sounds like a network issue, not a phone one.

Well, after several phone calls and tickets later, I have now found out that the AT&T messages aren't even hitting Sprint's gateway (the front door of data). It's odd because the tech rep is able to see my messages out, but not able to see the ones sent back. This leads me to believe that it is in fact a network issue, and has absolutely nothing to do with my phone. He clarified that even if my phone was broken he would still be able to see the messages at the gateway, but they aren't even getting there. There is nothing more that Sprint can do because they can't reference something that doesn't show in their systems; so I'm being forced to call AT&T... I have already gotten the run around from both sides stating, "well it's definitely an issue on their network".
I'm not really sure what else to do, it just seems so strange that the very same day I rooted my phone, I stopped being able to receive their messages. The only thing left for me to do is try and get a replacement phone? and if I do that, do I root my phone again and risk being burdened by this issue again? I know one thing's for sure, after having a rooted phone for almost a month and a half, there's no way I'm staying stock!

Getting a new phone won't help you, it's definitely AT&T's network, or whoever owns the bandwidth connecting their (AT&T's and Sprint's) networks. Simple as that.

Thank you drmacinyasha on your quick replies!
I'm hoping to get my girlfriend's account information soon so AT&T will actually help me; I'm just worried that they will say the same thing Sprint has told me. I know it's as "simple as that" to state where the problem obviously lies, but I'm not sure how simple it will be to get a hold of someone who will actually be able to fix it.
My girlfriend is able to send SMS to other people on Sprint just fine, so I'm confused by the fact that this has only happened to my number.

Roaming in Verizon Area not working

I was roaming yesterday in verizon area, I tried to make a call and got an automated message from Verizon that it could not authenticate my phone. I was shocked as I had pre before and never heard that message in my life. I'm running stock rooted 2.2 with 1.40PRI and latest PRL.
- Vadim
I am also rooted and recently did the PRI update to 1.40. I couldn't roam after the update (voice or data) and had to call Sprint. At first I got a regular Sprint rep and the problem was not fixed. But I called back and got to the technical support area and told them that I couldn't roam and was getting a message from Verizon about not being able to authenticate my phone. The tech did something in the Sprint system and then I was able to roam again. I didn't say anything about the PRI update, just the Verizon message about not being able to authenticate the phone.
I had the same issue last week. I call sprint and they had me update my PRL and profile, that didn't work. I called back and the customer service rep. connected me to a tech and he did some magic on his end and fixed it, be prepared to be on hold for a bit while they fix it (half hour or so total for the call). Hope that helps.
I had the same issue imeediately after upgrading my PRI. Just called Sprint from my landline, told 'em my PRI upgraded and that I was getting errors when roaming, and they just had me do a factory reset after the tech support guy did some magic on his end.
Took five minutes, all in all.
Mine did the same thing when I upgraded my pri. All I did was pull the battery and leave it out for about 2 minutes and then turn it back on. According to sprint, pulling the battery actually causes the radio to disconnect from the network and when you turn it back on, it gets reauthenticated.

That sounds like a bunch of bull**** that a level 1 rep made up. I'll give them a call I guess and see if they can fix it, unfortantly I cannot test it out easly because I got good sprint coverage here.
Yeah, I agree that it sounds like BS but it worked. I did get a level 1 tech who also told me that all tech support can really do on their end is to refresh your data profile and I made mention that I had seen on xda that people were having the same issue with roaming that I was having and that tech support told them that they could tweak some settings and then the user would need to pull the battery and leave it out for a few minutes. So that's when she told me all she had options for was to refresh the data profile and then I pulled the battery and waited 2 minutes, put it back in and could subsequently make phone calls while roaming. Sure, sounds like BS but whatever happened behind the scenes worked for me and for everyone else that I've seen in other threads regarding the pri update breaking roaming.

Just got off the phone with Sprint for the same issue, and the only thing they did was have me update my PRL (again). He never suggested a hard reset or anything like that. Anyone have any suggestions on keywords I can use to have them do the "magic" on their end? I'm still on PRI 1.34, PRL 60670.

Your problem isn't the same, as we're all on PRI 1.40, not 1.34. Call back, tell them that didn't work, that data isn't working while roaming, and you get the "could not authorize your device" message from Verizon.

EVO technical support, not the monkies they put in suits and strap headsets to.
I reached advanced tech support and they said there is nothing they can do except re provisioning...
Try that, but I call B.S. on 'em. I had my problem fixed in under five minutes. Just told them exactly, "I upgraded my EVO's PRI, not PRL to 1.40, and now I'm getting a message from Verizon whenever I roam, that they can't authoize my device. Works fine on Sprint, but when I'm roaming, data doesn't connect, and I get that message from VZW whenever I try to make a call."

Hope you realize you just told them you rooted your phone since no Sprint customer should have the 1.34 PRI under any legitimate circumstance.
when i bought my phone, (june 4th) it had 1.34

Not true. Some had 1.34, and I'm fairly sure the Google I/O phones had 1.34. Besides, they're too stupid to realize what it means that you had 1.34.

LOL okay. Just repeating what I've read more than once in the sacred dev forum from multiple "geniuses" over there. (or is it genii? geniusi? geniusosis?... nevermind). This is something I'm happy to be wrong about if I am because it's good news for me.
Just called in because of the same problem, verizon could not authenticate my phone.
The rep had me take out the battery and she told me she had to "refresh" my phone. I felt like telling her I already reFRESHed it with Fresh 3.2...lol, but I didn't.
She said the towers get updated and new towers get put in every now and then so if you "roam" often, or if you know you're going out of area on vacation, etc. it's a good idea to call in and ask them to "refresh" your phone.
Took less than 5 minutes...everything's working great.
They did not tell you that they "can't guarantee coverage" or any bull like that?

Q: No Data if Not Activated?

Hello. I am wondering if someone here might be able to clear something up for me. I bought a new EVO 4G off eBay a few days ago. I called Sprint to verify the ESN is clean.
The thing is, I don't have any intention to activate this phone, rather I bought it as a toy, and because upon coming back to the US for a vacation a few weeks ago, I finally saw what it looks like in person and I had to have it (Yes, I like smartphones). Of course ironically it FINALLY released in Japan just days after I left but that's besides the point.
Anyway, I have the WiFi turned on and the phone has found my location for the HTC Sense weather widget, however the internet won't load and when I try to connect to Google to use the Marketplace and such, it says there is an error communicating with the servers, and that my phone might not be set up for data provision.
Someone please tell me that Sprint hasn't locked down this such that you can't even use the Wi-Fi until it's activated. Though I suspect that is indeed the case...
...and IF that is so, then am I correct in the understanding that flashing it with some custom ROM would solve the problem? I have never rooted a phone before, though I do own a number of unlocked ones (Nexus S, Xperia Play, etc) and so I had intended to try it out with this, since I can never actually use this as a phone. But perhaps it might be more of a necessity than I had expected.
Not sure if this will help you, but if you flash Warm Z, or any other of the froyo/sense 2.2 ROMs, during setup it will ask you if you want to use it on the data network or only on wifi.
Since you don't need 4g anyway, I would recommend checking it out. One of my favorite ROMs.

I can't say this with confidence, because my Evo hasn't been deactivated before, but as far as I understood it, you should be able to connec to WiFi, whether the phone is activated or not. You shouldn't need to be activated to use WiFi. When you connected to the WiFi network, did it connect successfully and show good signal strength?
How about formatting the phone and then turning on airplane mode and then wifi. It should work fine
A drop of Chuck Norris's semen was placed on Android OS. We now have CyanogenMod.
Yes, being a used phone, I would highly recommend do a factory reset on it first. That way it will be clear of anything the previous owner might have done to it.
And yes, the phone will work on wifi only without a data plan, just make sure the phone is in airplane mode all the time, then turn the wifi on.
I had that happen to me with a old android when I did a factory rest you should have wifi but you can't use the market or gmail without a data plan from sprint at least I could not but I had a Samsung moment and it was rooted with a costume ROM on it I've never had my evo turned of so IDK..... If thats the case you can use other ways to get apps like Amazon or applanet thats what I did anyway......

Thanks to everyone who provided assistance. A few things:
1. The phone was actually still sealed. The security stickers were still on the phone and the manual, and even the battery was still unopened. Furthermore the phone itself still had the plastic sheet over the screen in perfect condition (something I've not even got from so-called new unlocked phones) so unless the seller went through really great loops to make it look new, it is apparently new. Though I will format the memory just incase.
2. I turned on Airplane mode as everyone suggested, and then when I turned on WiFi it let me connect to the Android Marketplace actually.
Actually, can I ask one more question, though unrelated. I want someone to confirm this:
I have two different contract carriers with me here roaming (Docomo and Softbank), both on Android Phones (the Xperia Play unlocked and Desire HD locked respectively). I have the mobile data transmission set to off (no roaming), however the actual phone service is on roaming. Every time I turn on the phones I receive messages from the carriers about roaming charges for data. I want to confirm that if the data roaming is OFF, and it is on Wi-Fi always, there are no charges for anything other than if I were to make a phone call, is this correct? I am 99.999% sure this is true, but part of me is really worried about returning and seeing a $10,000 bill.
but you can't use the market or gmail without a data plan from sprint

Yes you absolutely can. To the phone, a wifi connection is the same as a 3g connection, its just a way to access the internet.

You could still get charged for any texts/picture mail you receive, as those still go through the regular phone radio, not the data radio.

Drat...I've received a number of those actually, but all from the carriers themselves which I think might be free of charge.
Japan basically doesn't do SMS/MMS thus it's really not an issue. And while Softbank does to an extent, I can't seem to actually receive any while here, as it actually keeps saying I have undelivered mail.
But I am happy everyone here mentioned the Airplane Mode detail as I had no idea you could use Wi-Fi in it. I had been angry because there seemed like no way to shut off the cellular radio and that provided a solution.
Sorry if I seem paranoid, but I literally received a bill for $5400 last December due to a carrier mistake (and they actually had the nerve to accuse me of using an overseas phone when I CLEARLY was using a locked one) and ever since I have been scared about getting another. Currently Docomo is the only carrier in Japan that will allow unlocked phones to be used, though in doing so you are thus accepting that your data transmission charge will be capped at $120 a month instead of the normal $75 for its sanctioned (locked) products. But Japan is so far behind with smartphones I can't stand to use any of them.

calling issues

Hi, I'm looking for some help here with an issue my wife and I both have with our phones. My wife and I are the Proud owners of the Samsung Galaxy S2 phones UNROOTED. I have the Data plan and she does not. In the past 2 months or maybe since the begining of Sept. we both are haiving the same thing happen. When making or receiving calls (both in Wifi and T-mobile networks) we can't hear the person on the other end. We have to hang up and call them back (with success) on the cell or house phone. They let us know, they can hear us fine but we can't hear them.
This happens on all Landlines and Cell lines that we call or get call to our cell. I have contacted T-Mobile and they can't find anything on their end. I have done a Factory Reset on Mine and it still happens.
2 weeks ago, some weird things were happening to both our phones on the same day. with this being one of them. I plugged my phone into Samsung Kies and there was a Device Firmware update. So I updated to the ANDROID VERSION: 4.0.4 BASEBAND: T989UVLH1, and after update, I Reset phone to Factory Reset Settings and that seemed to help with alot of the freezing we had. But the phone call issues still happen.
I also have noticed, that now we periodically loose the Network connection. I can be sitting on the couch with a 100% Wifi coverage and not move an inch. I would dop my connection and the call and still have wifi coverage.I will also contact Samsung to see if it has something to do with any patches or updates. But for now, I am lost for ideas.
I was wondering if anyone else is having a similar issue or the same issue..or id anyone has a fix for this?
If it's happening to your landlines too, it's definitely an issue with T-Mobile and not your phones. You either got a noob customer service rep or a tech that didn't know what he/she was talking about. I would call again and speak with a technician, they should, at the very least, reset your service!

I have, since that post, gotten a new SIM card and although I only made and received a few calls, all of them were a success so far.But it is still too early to tell as this issue happens randomly. It also has been pointed out that there are others that have this similar issue and they are blaming it on the software. Which can be found here: http://androidforums.com/samsung-ga...hen-dialing-out-sometimes-not-connecting.html
I am hoping that is was my SIM card. But if it's not, and it does have to do with something with the OS Firmware version, I might consider Reverting backwards to the original ROM of SGH-T989_TMB_T989UVLDE 2.3.6. But for now, I will continue to test this SIM card out...
I'll keep you posted!

Seems to be working OK. But I have slow data issues on Prl 53000. It does show that I am on Evdo Rev A. I did just get a roaming data notice too. Something about too much roaming data. I'm on the stock LJ7 rom and rooted. Also, when I dial 611, still goes to Sprint. What am I doing wrong here? New rom?

Very nice video.
I have the same setup. With stock and rooted LJ7 ROM and Baseband. When I dial 611, I get Verizon. Phone and texting works fine, but I can't get 3G to work. I tried to replace the 53000 PRL with the 1X one and still the same. I'm getting "No network connection. No signal found for mobile networks".

Hmmm. Sometimes, what fixes it for me is to just reboot the phone.
Otherwise, sounds like something didn't flash over correctly. I always try and make sure that when flashing, I check the log and see that its successful / complete. If not, you'll end up with issues.
One issue I had was my phone number wasn't showing up when going to About Phone Status in Settings. It only showed the last four numbers. Reflashing worked fine for me.
And other thing. Did you follow the instructions about going the web on the gusto 2 first? I had to actually pick a website and try to open it.
Good luck!

You need to call verizon tell them your phone is not receiving text, and no data. Have them to reauthenicate the account and maybe you will get data then...... The problem with flashing to Verizon Prepaid is one wrong move and account gets locked out.........

You didn't write something correctly or missed a step. dial *228 on your phone. It may not let you dial the one or the two so just hang out and it will program your phone for you also then write the 53000 prl. I promise that if you follow the video exactly you will get 3g data unless you live somewhere that doesn't have 3g data.
I also want to touch on vipers comment about getting locked out of service. I'm constantly saying this but I'll say it again. I've been on verizon prepaid myself for over a year now. I'm currently on the 35 dollar plan. I haven't had any problems with them at all. I've also flashed several of my friends phones to VP and they haven't had any problems except for one guy every time he gets drunk the next day I have to rewrite his aaa and ha password (still can't figure that out) but no one has lost their account.
What do I think is happening to these accounts? Nothing I believe these individuals are people/businesses who get paid to flash phones and don't want the secrets out there and this is probably killing there business. People get concerned by problems and start to wonder about that. For instance a few years ago I was working for this small cell phone flashing company and flashing to boost started to kick off. Well we didn't have everything set up like this other company did so when someone came in we had this rumor going on that this guy who had his cell phone since they first came out, lost his number because boost found out and then he went to their shop and threw brick through their window.
Saying somthing like that to a customer we already had wasn't really targeted to him\her. But to any friends of theirs that questioned them about their service believe it or not but people like to talk. Especially about bricks being thrown through windows. I didn't stay long with that company but it's an example.

I was I've through all of your posts (takes about ten minutes) and your xda repoire at first is to just ask a bunch of questions and then you started to sell yourself as a cell phone flasher. Then you found out how to pull aaa keys and refused to tell anyone and blamed it on cdma workshop not being free. You can still show the process and I'm calling you out on that and the fact your trying to scare people into not going to verizon prepaid. You may fool some people but you don't fool me.
Hmm.. I must have misunderstood the *228 thing in the video. But anyways. Now that I did *228 thing, I'm stuck with the roaming indicator. Does that matter? I plan on flashing another rom and hope it changes it. Also, how does doing *228 affect the phone? It was working fine earlier and I even clocked 3G speeds at 2.7mbps.
Thanks

You can call me out all you want, I have done several phones while members watched and seen the keys pulled in. I have not tried in no way to scare people from verizon prepaid. I flash to them myself, but you are dead wrong if you do not think that a account will need to be reathenicated sometimes. I have nothing to prove to you but only offered a suggestion to the guy having issues (now my comment was seen that way by you, I have no idea) . Anyways good luck to you in your venture as I am way above arguing this with you. No one is fooling anyone here but you..... I don't need to sell myself, proof is in the pudding bro.......

I know your gonna read this because curiousity will bring you back to see my rebuttal. It's how life works. I'm not saying that you can't pull the aaa keys what I'm saying is that you refuse to share the knowledge of how to do it. You made a thread to talk about it but really I believe that you made that thread to make a profit. There is free software to record your screen and there is also hacked software for camtasia there is no excuse not to share especially on xda.
You probably won't respond because you don't want to share this info and pretending like you didn't see this post is probably better than trying to come up with an excuse because there isn't one.
I reflashed the phone again slowly making sure I follow each step of the video and also did the *228 on the phone. After I disable Wifi, I still get "No network connection. No Signal found for mobile networks."
At first I had the LG2 modem and it keep on prompting for a sim card, so I updated it to LJ7. Still no 3G and I keep on getting the roaming message.
I do noticed however when I got to Settings, About device, Status:
Network = Sprint (shouldn't this be Verizon?)
Mobile network type: 1xRTT:6 (CDMA)
User name = [email protected] (shouldn't this be something like my telephone # @vzw.com?)
Mobile network state = disconnected (???)
IMEI =Old one from Sprint (shouldn't this be my Verizon Gusto 2 IMEI?)
Thanks guys for all your help.
I flashed the MOAR rom and kept LG2 modem. Did you download and flash rhe correft PRL? I also went out for a drive to make ure 3G would appear. I would recommend you do the same and see if it helps.

OK, let me try to use the MOAR rom instead. The LG2 modem keeps on asking for a sim card. Sprint is CDMA, so hence no sim card.
I'm using the LJ7_STOCK_WITH_COUNT_RESET16 rom and the pageplus_sprint_phones_only_no_roaming_indicator_53000.prl

Hmmm.. I never had a problem with the Sim request. From my understanding, you probably still have the Mobile Network set to LTE. That should be the only reason why it's looking for a Sim Card.
I also noticed a different PRL after activating on Verizon.
Good Luck!

Are you sure need to be on LG2? Everytime I flash that modem I get that symbol on the left (sim i think) and no data connection. Shouldn't LJ7 modem work?

[Q] Help with unlock

To state clearly at first. The new phone in question was not rooted when I purchased it, but I did root it. So the phone is rooted but not unlocked. I thought I should also add that I'm in Atlantic Canada.
As usual, I always seem to have an issue that I look and can never seem to find the answer. This leaves me asking a question that I'm hoping there isn't already an answer to because I know people hate that.
So here goes. I have 2 SGH-989D phones. One I got new 18 months to 24 months ago with my re-negotiated Telus contract. I got the second one "barely used" a couple of months ago and I'm pretty sure it was a Bell pay as you go phone as this is what the person told me. He said all of the phones they get are always Bell. He would have no reason to not be truthful especially since I had a Telus and he knew I would need to unlock it I purchased it because my existing phone was acting up and also the screen was pretty severely cracked.
What I found odd is that when I put the Telus SIM card in the phone, I didn't get any message that the phone was locked. I was immediately able to dial a number and the call went through. I could also send and receive txt's. The phone also says Telus at the bottom of the screen. What is problematic however is that 4g won't work. When go into the new phone under network mode info this appears "GSM/WCDMA(Auto Mode)" But when I look at my original phones network mode I get "GSM/HSPA(Auto Mode)" So, I'm thinking this is probably quite obviously the reason that 4g isn't working and I have no data available unless I connect to wifi. This won't do.
So, where do I go from here? I'm thinking i need to unlock the phone in order to do something about this probably? Or is there something else I can do to pick up the HSPA instead of WCDMA? I'm so irritated by this. It feels like it should be a simple fix since both of these phones are SGH-989d's but maybe it's not. Lastly, and I don't think this makes much of a difference. My old phone is 4.0.3 version and my newer one is 4.1.2.
Thanks and I'm hoping someone knows what or if I can do anything or if I should just give up. I really hate giving up so I'm hoping it's not the latter of the two options.
Moved to Q and A, and, please do not bump within the same 24 hour period.

The phone is unlocked or you wouldn't of been able to make calls etc with your sim.
My guess as to the problem is that your Bell phone is not a SGH-T989D, it's actually a SGH-i757M or GT-I9100M, they are called Samsung Galaxy S2's but there are a few models of the S2 out there. To verify your model either go to Settings > About phone and check Model number, or pull battery and look under it for the model number. To my knowledge, Bell has never sold the SGH-T989D model of the S2.

Thanks for your reply Almite. Unfortunately the phone is the SGH-T989D.. I know it's a weird problem I've got here.
I used to play around with satellites back in the day. One of the things we used to do with the boxes was to jtag the box, erase the memory from the primary chip and then flash it with a different STB's info. This would enable us to do some wonderful things.
Rooting and then unlocking seems like a similar process however I just don't want to flash the phone with something that is going to brick it. I guess I'm going to need to do something. This phone is no good to me this way. If I brick it, I brick it. What I would like from someone in the community would be to direct me to the easiest process to flash my phone with a telus ROM.
I have read A LOT and there are many opinions out there, but I'm thinking that there is probably a consensus on what is the best and easiest way.
Update
I have successfully installed Jedi Mind Trick using TWRP as it appeared to be the best stable one out there. Used Darksides superwipe and then installed JMT. Still have issue of GSM/HSPA on original phone vs GSM/WCMDA on the phone that now has JMT installed on. I must say, I'm pretty impressed with how easily it installed and the ROM itself however sadly it did not help my conundrum.
I'm thinking that there is probably a developer here up for a challenge that could probably assist me with my problem. I really would like to be able to pick up 4g on this phone, or It's pretty much useless to me. What I need to figure out is how I can change this phone to recognize the HSPA network instead of the WCMDA network as GSM does not appear to be relative to data. Not with Telus anyway it would seem.
Maybe this isn't even possible because it's hard coded into the phone or something. Anyone have any ideas?
Last update unless anyone has any ideas

Spent almost an hour on phone with Telus tech support. he explained that WCMDA should work fine as that and HSPA are essentially the same thing. Went through several settings changes and edits with him. In the end, he was stumped. The changes we made should have worked but did not. Therefore I supposed I have no choice but to give up. Guess I'll give the phone to my daughter as i don't want her to go online without wifi anyway.
Same issue
My wife recently cracked the screen on her Rugby Pro so I picked up a slightly used Koodo T989D and plugged in the SIM card. I had the same thing happen. Phone booted, made calls, all seemed well. The next day she realized she had no data connection. I rooted the phone, flashed Telus radio, tried different ROMs, even purchased the unlock code for it hoping for a fix. I can't seem to find anything that will allow this phone data connection of any type other than Wi-Fi. I would really appreciate any ideas or information that anyone has on this topic as I'm running out of ideas and buying another replacement isn't an option.

So I hunted and finally answered this question we both had. Go to Settings:Wireless and Networks:Mobile Networks:Access Point Names.
Since my phone was a Koodo phone it lists Koodo SP. Click the menu button then New APN. Name it whatever you want. I called it Telus. APN is sp.telus.com. Scroll down to MMSC and type http: // aliasredirect. net/proxy/mmsc (without the spaces. They won't let me post a 'link'). Under MMSC proxy type 74.49.0.18. MMS port is 80. MCC is 302. MNC is 220. APN type should be Internet + mms. Click the menu button and save. Click the circle behind your newly created APN and wait. In under 30 seconds I had 4G connection.
Hope this helps you.
