Hello. I am wondering if someone here might be able to clear something up for me. I bought a new EVO 4G off eBay a few days ago. I called Sprint to verify the ESN is clean.
The thing is, I don't have any intention to activate this phone, rather I bought it as a toy, and because upon coming back to the US for a vacation a few weeks ago, I finally saw what it looks like in person and I had to have it (Yes, I like smartphones). Of course ironically it FINALLY released in Japan just days after I left but that's besides the point.
Anyway, I have the WiFi turned on and the phone has found my location for the HTC Sense weather widget, however the internet won't load and when I try to connect to Google to use the Marketplace and such, it says there is an error communicating with the servers, and that my phone might not be set up for data provision.
Someone please tell me that Sprint hasn't locked down this such that you can't even use the Wi-Fi until it's activated. Though I suspect that is indeed the case...
...and IF that is so, then am I correct in the understanding that flashing it with some custom ROM would solve the problem? I have never rooted a phone before, though I do own a number of unlocked ones (Nexus S, Xperia Play, etc) and so I had intended to try it out with this, since I can never actually use this as a phone. But perhaps it might be more of a necessity than I had expected.
Not sure if this will help you, but if you flash Warm Z, or any other of the froyo/sense 2.2 ROMs, during setup it will ask you if you want to use it on the data network or only on wifi.
Since you don't need 4g anyway, I would recommend checking it out. One of my favorite ROMs.

I can't say this with confidence, because my Evo hasn't been deactivated before, but as far as I understood it, you should be able to connec to WiFi, whether the phone is activated or not. You shouldn't need to be activated to use WiFi. When you connected to the WiFi network, did it connect successfully and show good signal strength?
How about formatting the phone and then turning on airplane mode and then wifi. It should work fine
A drop of Chuck Norris's semen was placed on Android OS. We now have CyanogenMod.
Yes, being a used phone, I would highly recommend do a factory reset on it first. That way it will be clear of anything the previous owner might have done to it.
And yes, the phone will work on wifi only without a data plan, just make sure the phone is in airplane mode all the time, then turn the wifi on.
I had that happen to me with a old android when I did a factory rest you should have wifi but you can't use the market or gmail without a data plan from sprint at least I could not but I had a Samsung moment and it was rooted with a costume ROM on it I've never had my evo turned of so IDK..... If thats the case you can use other ways to get apps like Amazon or applanet thats what I did anyway......

Thanks to everyone who provided assistance. A few things:
1. The phone was actually still sealed. The security stickers were still on the phone and the manual, and even the battery was still unopened. Furthermore the phone itself still had the plastic sheet over the screen in perfect condition (something I've not even got from so-called new unlocked phones) so unless the seller went through really great loops to make it look new, it is apparently new. Though I will format the memory just incase.
2. I turned on Airplane mode as everyone suggested, and then when I turned on WiFi it let me connect to the Android Marketplace actually.
Actually, can I ask one more question, though unrelated. I want someone to confirm this:
I have two different contract carriers with me here roaming (Docomo and Softbank), both on Android Phones (the Xperia Play unlocked and Desire HD locked respectively). I have the mobile data transmission set to off (no roaming), however the actual phone service is on roaming. Every time I turn on the phones I receive messages from the carriers about roaming charges for data. I want to confirm that if the data roaming is OFF, and it is on Wi-Fi always, there are no charges for anything other than if I were to make a phone call, is this correct? I am 99.999% sure this is true, but part of me is really worried about returning and seeing a $10,000 bill.
but you can't use the market or gmail without a data plan from sprint

Yes you absolutely can. To the phone, a wifi connection is the same as a 3g connection, its just a way to access the internet.

You could still get charged for any texts/picture mail you receive, as those still go through the regular phone radio, not the data radio.

Drat...I've received a number of those actually, but all from the carriers themselves which I think might be free of charge.
Japan basically doesn't do SMS/MMS thus it's really not an issue. And while Softbank does to an extent, I can't seem to actually receive any while here, as it actually keeps saying I have undelivered mail.
But I am happy everyone here mentioned the Airplane Mode detail as I had no idea you could use Wi-Fi in it. I had been angry because there seemed like no way to shut off the cellular radio and that provided a solution.
Sorry if I seem paranoid, but I literally received a bill for $5400 last December due to a carrier mistake (and they actually had the nerve to accuse me of using an overseas phone when I CLEARLY was using a locked one) and ever since I have been scared about getting another. Currently Docomo is the only carrier in Japan that will allow unlocked phones to be used, though in doing so you are thus accepting that your data transmission charge will be capped at $120 a month instead of the normal $75 for its sanctioned (locked) products. But Japan is so far behind with smartphones I can't stand to use any of them.

Just a few days ago, Verizon was having a sale on their site. Get a free KIN TwoM with a 2 year contract. I think its because they've almost emptied their inventory of KINs,but there's still some left. Apple usually clears out inventory of phones by reducing them to $99. After their inventory is cleared, what will happen? I want to know what you guys think.
I think that they should sell the phone for 50$ and they would still get cash for it (nobody wants it in responsability rofl). the 2 year contract for this phone idea just made me laugh.
And yes, we all know about expiring date: soon.
Honestly i think there will be a higher demand, i was the first one in my area to own a Kin device and now all of my friends who don't want a data plan want the kin. It's the closest to a smartphone without a dataplan and is by far the BEST feature phone verizon has. I look at the reviews and laugh at all the people b*tching about this phone. Why would they be complaining when it's a cheap and very good feature phone? people complain about everything these days.
Let me explain: Original creation, aka Microsoft doesnt make more Kin OS related shipments, Sharp doesnt create more phisical devices and Verizon thinks that it sucks (and hides it). Unless you can do magic, the only devices you will see are stock or refurbised.
They are just cleaning the dust for it. Also, i just pointed at 2year contract thing, too much time imo.

yeah, I saw that it is Out-of-Stock on Verizon. Its a shame that this phone is basically dead. Even as it is, I believe that this is Verizon's best feature phone. The addition of wi-fi just makes it kick ass. And a 600-MHz processor? Damn that's fast for a feature phone. I think that given time and if rumours spread that the device can run homebrew apps and a CFW (made by our community) this phone would spread like wild-fire.
I just received to Kin TWOm's this morning from Verizon. Me and my wife both had upgrades due so she ordered them. I love the phone to be honest. Just wish It was hacked & could play games.

if you're connected over wi-fi, I do believe that you can play Java games. But, being a feature phone, there's not much you can ask for. Hopefully we can get things moving along and get past the write-protection on this device.

Why can't Microsoft just understand that this project was a failure. And since they're not going to continue the project, they might as well hand it over to the community. The community knows what it wants, and the community can develop their own software so the phone becomes better. All this phone needs is custom applications, that will solve problems of games, tools, and entertainment (youtube and what not).
If we all make a petition or something like that, pressuring Microsoft to give us a minute of their attention. Maybe then, they might give us some sort of code or access to the phone.

It doesn't matter if your data is blocked when you connect via Wi-Fi. Verizon can't stop you from accessing Wi-Fi networks they don't own, they can only block you from using their 3G network for data (besides your calls, texts, etc).
I didnt know that I thought no matter what if you connect any data through the phone even with Wifi some how this will get to verizon & I will be charged for Data. Verizons data plans are trash so I dont want to get data with them
No, if Verizon could charge me for using my own Wi-Fi, I would be throwing stones through the windows at their corporate headquarters. Just use "Wireless Controls" under "Settings", and turn Wi-Fi on. Select a network to connect to, if it doesn't automatically find one, you can go to "other" underneath the Wi-Fi pane and find a network manually.
See I did not know that because Im just really getting into phones so this is my really first true phone. I called verizon twice & asked this same question "If I disable my Data plan" can I connect through Wifi on someone elses network & not get charged.
Both people said If i disable my Data Plan (which I dont currently have anyways) They said I would I would be charged no matter what if I connect through Wifi. Maybe thats just an attempt to force to purchase a data plan.
@4LC4PON3
You can just put your phone in airplane mode and then turn on wifi. This way, there's no chance you'll get charged while using wifi.

Simple Answer: You don't get charged for wi-fi and they can't charge you for data if it is deactivated
Explanation: That is a complete lie and whoever you were talking to must both be complete idiots. Verizon has NO way to know if you're using wi-fi or not. If they charged anyone for using wi-fi, no one would buy a smartphone from Verizon. And, if you disable your data, they cannot charge you for it. If no data is being sent to Verizon's network, then there are no charges, makes sense right? And, if you're on wi-fi which does not belong to Verizon, how would they know? Wi-fi is a short-range frequency and they would not even be able to tell if it is activated unless they put a chip in every single device that is wi-fi enabled to track it, which they do not. BUT, if you have a weak wi-fi signal, your device might drop the wi-fi connection and just hop over to 3G. Or, if you use a Verizon wi-fi zone (airports, hotels, etc) then they can charge you.

Airplane mode disables the 3G (Verizon) connection. You can't send or receive phone calls, SMS (text), or MMS (pics/videos). Airplane mode is the same thing as turning your phone off, as far as Verizon's visibility of it.
So my Inc has been acting up lately, I've got 3G when I turn the screen on, but as soon as something tries to use the internet (sync, browser, anything at all), my mobile network instantly drops, and when it reconnects, it goes and reconnects as 1X. I've tried going completely back to stock (the 2.1 rom), and it's doing it even there..... Anyone have any ideas?

But I don't want it to. Reception in this area in general does suck, but even the places I ALWAYS get 3g aren't working.....
So I called and spoke to verizon. I have to bring my phone into the store, so they can inspect the damage to it, to see if I qualify for a replacement. If I don't, then I either have to buy a "certified replacement" or suffer with no 3g. They apparently think this is an exceptable situation. I'll be going to get the boost phone with unlimited calls/texts/web before I pay verizon 135 dollars a month to not even get unlimited. The Android phone isn't as good, but **** verizon, no way I'm buying a new phone because this one crapped out.

Can always find a used one online if it comes to that; DINC's aren't too expensive anymore.
When you say you tried going back to stock, do you mean the RUU? I'm pretty sure doing that brings you back to the stock radio, but I would double check that, and also make sure you don't have any apps that might mess with your data connection.

I had this exact problem last year. I ended up having to RUU and return it for a replacement because I was within the 1 year free replacement period. I returned it with S-OFF and got a new one that I've been using ever since.
I'm apparently still in the one year period. And yes, I did the FYI executive and without loading ANYTHING it won't stay on 3g. I'm talking bare phone, no apps, no accounts. It did work slightly better though. I won't be going to Verizon until tomorrow, so I will try a few of the newer radios I guess. I've always been partial to 7.28.

I have the same issue! Went to bed on Thursday working fine, woke up Friday morning and was having this issue! I tried everything but restore the stock. I updated the radio, did a complete wipe and flash virtuous 3.2 rom as well as ##778 and modifying my settings to find a different tower to use. The tower modification seemed to help a bit, but in certain areas!!
Verizon tech said the same thing that I should take it to a store and have them check it. I do have insurance on it, so it won't be bad paying 50 and getting another one. But my concern is that I won't be getting the AMOLED screen. I had my phone pre-ordered and love it. Not even a scratch on it because I had it protected since I got it.
Where do you live?
My problem was actually fixed. I tried the RUU a few times. What fixed it was going into HBoot and doing a factory restore. It made me deactivated my phone after booting up, but my phone has 3g again. I tried updating prl before that with no luck. So try that, see if it helps.

I actually just returned to 7.28, after using the newest Inc Gingerbread Radio, and got stuck on 1X as well. A simple toggling of Airplane mode On and Off fixed it for me.
This happened to me just a few days ago. Mine happened because I did a *228 on my Inc running an Evo rom. I did the RUU fix posted in this forum and it worked.
To state clearly at first. The new phone in question was not rooted when I purchased it, but I did root it. So the phone is rooted but not unlocked. I thought I should also add that I'm in Atlantic Canada.
As usual, I always seem to have an issue that I look and can never seem to find the answer. This leaves me asking a question that I'm hoping there isn't already an answer to because I know people hate that.
So here goes. I have 2 SGH-989D phones. One I got new 18 months to 24 months ago with my re-negotiated Telus contract. I got the second one "barely used" a couple of months ago and I'm pretty sure it was a Bell pay as you go phone as this is what the person told me. He said all of the phones they get are always Bell. He would have no reason to not be truthful especially since I had a Telus and he knew I would need to unlock it I purchased it because my existing phone was acting up and also the screen was pretty severely cracked.
What I found odd is that when I put the Telus SIM card in the phone, I didn't get any message that the phone was locked. I was immediately able to dial a number and the call went through. I could also send and receive txt's. The phone also says Telus at the bottom of the screen. What is problematic however is that 4g won't work. When go into the new phone under network mode info this appears "GSM/WCDMA(Auto Mode)" But when I look at my original phones network mode I get "GSM/HSPA(Auto Mode)" So, I'm thinking this is probably quite obviously the reason that 4g isn't working and I have no data available unless I connect to wifi. This won't do.
So, where do I go from here? I'm thinking i need to unlock the phone in order to do something about this probably? Or is there something else I can do to pick up the HSPA instead of WCDMA? I'm so irritated by this. It feels like it should be a simple fix since both of these phones are SGH-989d's but maybe it's not. Lastly, and I don't think this makes much of a difference. My old phone is 4.0.3 version and my newer one is 4.1.2.
Thanks and I'm hoping someone knows what or if I can do anything or if I should just give up. I really hate giving up so I'm hoping it's not the latter of the two options.
Moved to Q and A, and, please do not bump within the same 24 hour period.

The phone is unlocked or you wouldn't of been able to make calls etc with your sim.
My guess as to the problem is that your Bell phone is not a SGH-T989D, it's actually a SGH-i757M or GT-I9100M, they are called Samsung Galaxy S2's but there are a few models of the S2 out there. To verify your model either go to Settings > About phone and check Model number, or pull battery and look under it for the model number. To my knowledge, Bell has never sold the SGH-T989D model of the S2.

Thanks for your reply Almite. Unfortunately the phone is the SGH-T989D.. I know it's a weird problem I've got here.
I used to play around with satellites back in the day. One of the things we used to do with the boxes was to jtag the box, erase the memory from the primary chip and then flash it with a different STB's info. This would enable us to do some wonderful things.
Rooting and then unlocking seems like a similar process however I just don't want to flash the phone with something that is going to brick it. I guess I'm going to need to do something. This phone is no good to me this way. If I brick it, I brick it. What I would like from someone in the community would be to direct me to the easiest process to flash my phone with a telus ROM.
I have read A LOT and there are many opinions out there, but I'm thinking that there is probably a consensus on what is the best and easiest way.
Update
I have successfully installed Jedi Mind Trick using TWRP as it appeared to be the best stable one out there. Used Darksides superwipe and then installed JMT. Still have issue of GSM/HSPA on original phone vs GSM/WCMDA on the phone that now has JMT installed on. I must say, I'm pretty impressed with how easily it installed and the ROM itself however sadly it did not help my conundrum.
I'm thinking that there is probably a developer here up for a challenge that could probably assist me with my problem. I really would like to be able to pick up 4g on this phone, or It's pretty much useless to me. What I need to figure out is how I can change this phone to recognize the HSPA network instead of the WCMDA network as GSM does not appear to be relative to data. Not with Telus anyway it would seem.
Maybe this isn't even possible because it's hard coded into the phone or something. Anyone have any ideas?

Spent almost an hour on phone with Telus tech support. he explained that WCMDA should work fine as that and HSPA are essentially the same thing. Went through several settings changes and edits with him. In the end, he was stumped. The changes we made should have worked but did not. Therefore I supposed I have no choice but to give up. Guess I'll give the phone to my daughter as i don't want her to go online without wifi anyway.
Same issue
My wife recently cracked the screen on her Rugby Pro so I picked up a slightly used Koodo T989D and plugged in the SIM card. I had the same thing happen. Phone booted, made calls, all seemed well. The next day she realized she had no data connection. I rooted the phone, flashed Telus radio, tried different ROMs, even purchased the unlock code for it hoping for a fix. I can't seem to find anything that will allow this phone data connection of any type other than Wi-Fi. I would really appreciate any ideas or information that anyone has on this topic as I'm running out of ideas and buying another replacement isn't an option.

So I hunted and finally answered this question we both had. Go to Settings:Wireless and Networks:Mobile Networks:Access Point Names.
Since my phone was a Koodo phone it lists Koodo SP. Click the menu button then New APN. Name it whatever you want. I called it Telus. APN is sp.telus.com. Scroll down to MMSC and type http: // aliasredirect. net/proxy/mmsc (without the spaces. They won't let me post a 'link'). Under MMSC proxy type 74.49.0.18. MMS port is 80. MCC is 302. MNC is 220. APN type should be Internet + mms. Click the menu button and save. Click the circle behind your newly created APN and wait. In under 30 seconds I had 4G connection.
Hope this helps you.
Woke up this morning and have not been able to access the T-Mobile network. No changes have been made that should have impacted the ability to connect. Greatly apprecaite any help.
If you made no changes then it's either your phone or the TMO system.

Well first, obviously, did you try rebooting your phone? Push into Airplane Mode and back?
Second, how is it not connecting to the T-Mobile network? No data connections? Or voice calls? Not connecting to the network at all?
Did you check your APN?
Can't really offer help if there is no accurate description of the problem at hand.
And finally, if you can gain access to post on XDA, why not contact T-Mobile themselves? As I'm pretty sure they can help you far better than many of us here with this issue of network connectivity. :silly:
Just sayin'.
I have the same issue. After a few days of getting brand new phone the data connection is messed up
Thinking of returning and getting S5
Call tmobile and have them refresh you problem solved
I went back to T mobile store. They asked me to wait 3 days. Refresh didn't help

Call up 611 on the phone (if possible) and say "Clear Location", that automatically clears out your phone connections and details (not your personal data) and resets the connections with the towers/antennas. You might need to speak with a rep or tech support to get that request, but they always do it if asked.
If you can't use the phone in question, call from another phone using 1-877-453-1304 and just give them your T-Mobile phone number in question and request the same.
Clear Location updates where your phone is being used and has it renegotiate its protocols, handshakes and talk, it essentially has your phone act like when it first booted up out of the box and was activated with T-Mobile.
I don't understand how the T-Mobile store didn't just perform that request/task with you when you were there....
They did do that and it worked in the store. But problem resumed when i got home

I would try the Clear Location again, just to see if it would fix it, if it doesn't, I would ask for a device swap in store to see if it works and holds.
It might be your account provisioning, but it was working fine then didn't, so it's most likely on T-Mobile's side. You can wait it out and when and if it works again, call up and request a credit to your account for the loss of service.
It seems to be your data isn't working at all but voice is, so you can check your Mobile settings and see if the APN is set to fast.t-mobile.com with IPv6.
Im going back today and swap for new phone. Im not sure if it was always working. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't
When i first got the phone i went straight home and used wifi. I only noticed it 3 days later when i was outside. It was after that, that I started monitoring the problem
I get the 4G icons but little data coming thru
Yeah, I would try a device swap and see if that corrects the issue, since it seems the data reset isn't.
BTW, the 4G icon is for 3G+ (HSPA), which is slower than the actual LTE speeds. If you get LTE speeds, the phone will display "4G LTE."
I just swapped the phone and new phone works as it should. In the store the TMo employee had a G3 and we compared Ookla Speedtest. Mine was definitely not working like his.
I hope this new phone won't have a problem. They only waive restocking once. I was ginna swap for S5 but decided to stick w G3 for the screen

That's good to hear that you finally got it to work fine.
Also, in regards to the restocking fee, it is waived if the device is defective. They should not be charging it when the device is broken, defective or not working as it should. The restocking fee is for those who just don't like their device and want to swap out for another one.
You might have to fight with them about it a bit, but no restocking fees on defective devices.
I picked up the Sprint version of the Samsung Galay Tab 3 7.0 (SM-T217S) on Craig's List for $90 (including a Moshi Versacover case). Not a bad deal. I reset everything to the factory defaults and started fresh. I'm running stock 4.4.2. (I'd love to root, but for some reason I can't. See a separate thread about that.)
Anyway, what's strange is that I have Internet access with the device, even though it has no sim card in it and even with wifi turned off. How can that be? Is this thing possessed, or am I missing something here? How can I have an Internet connection with wifi turned off and no sim card (and hence no data plan). I'm not a Sprint customer and have never signed up for anything.
Hey, I'll take it, but I'm curious how this is possible. (Chances are I'm overlooking something very obvious, but I thought I'd throw it out there.)
Thanks!

Dont forget that the SIM Slot on this version (SM-T217S) is only used by sprint for VALIDATION of the customer using LTE speeds, the tablet still works with CDMA (Needs to be flashed with CDMA Tools, PRLS, HEXMEID, all that stuff)
If you wish to know more about flashing a cdma phone please watch this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZDAs7D9CzWs
Thats why you got internet access, you are using someone elses account which was not properly deactivated before selling the tablet. (Taking the LTE validation sim out of a Sprint tablet does not deactivate it like a gsm tablet like ATT one would)
You can use it till the guy paying the bills notices it, and either reports it stolen or deactivates that data plan.
BTW if it gets blacklisted you wont be able to reflash it to another number (data plan) on any of the CDMA carriers in the us, in that case ill buy it from you, just let me know.
Greetings.
Thanks for the reply. That would explain everything. I've contacted the seller and let him know he should properly deactivate the tablet from his Sprint account.
I don't really care if the tablet is blacklisted, since I have no intention of using it with cellular data. This LTE-enabled Galaxy Tab 3 7.0 was available at the right price, and I'm finding that LTE-enabled tablets are just faster overall and have higher benchmark scores than their wifi-only counterparts. I saw the same thing with the Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 LTE (SGH-i497) vs. the wifi-only one ( GT-P5113), which I could test side by side.
