Don't have to say anything, what you should do however is stop moaning - what's the use of official updates for you when we have so many custom ROM's, and with you being here, it's suggesting you are the user of them. Did you really expect HTC push out ICS to a 2 year old phone, when they barely gave it GB, and not even an OTA update? The Samsung Galaxy S didn't get it either - this phone is dated and unsupported, get used to it, and if you don't like it get a new phone.

If they had to keep trying to squish new versions on all their older devices, HTC would be working on that instead of developing. All the other phones is the same. Some of it is hardware related and the amount of effort necessary to try to get a stable and bugfree Rom.
Wait a sec... I am beginning to feel we just fed a troll... :O tell me it ain't so!

Either that or someone who does not comprehend the advancement of technology, and the constraints the desire faces with newer software, and the lack of motivation from HTC, and really any other handset maker to support 2y/of phones.

I read a news from the following link
http://marmarday.com/?p=7239
It says N1 will be updated to Android 2.2 on the Horizon, and what about the Desire?
i think it will but there will be a slight delay as HTC need to update Sense to work with 2.2 whereas the N1 has no overlays so can be updated as soon as the update is released

I wouldn't count on that.
HTC Hero used to be the top of the line before the Legend and the Desire came out. I think the Hero was launched in September, but until now the latest """Rumors""" say it will be updated to 2.1 in June.
Not to mention, android 1.5 on the Hero has limitations, which naturally should become a reason for updating, but yet, that wasn't good enough.
So worrying about it is just a waste of callories
But when the Desire gets rooted, we'll have plently of cooked 2.2, 2.5... etc Roms
If 2.2 is when their "Defragmentation Solving" thing comes into effect then probably yes.
Because in theory, HTC wouldn't have to do anything, sense and all the apps would happily run on top of 2.2 as separate apps.
They had better... Flash 10.1, DivX and 720p recording depend on it.

Still, it will take HTC alot of work to migrate to 2.2 in the first place. After which defragmentation concept can be applied.
Anyway, the complexity of it will be clear when that feature is out.

Flash 10.1 is definitley in FroYo. DivX and 720P recording was something HTC promised to be released in an update after the desire was launched so to me it makes sense that FroYo would be the update.
Look at it this way...HTC supposedly take such a long time because they build Sense to integrate tightly with the underlying OS. It's hooked in. The direction Google is taking is going to mean Sense is a separate self standing app/service...so HTC now have to re-write it probably from the ground up. That's not a trivial task if that's what this means.

You're right, all these are promised to be coming to the Desire, and Flash 10.1 is rumored to be coming to Nexus 1 with Froyo.
But that doesn't mean all these features require the update to Froyo, at least I hope so, or the Desire will have to wait for a long time.

I can't wait to root mine. Good thing is that it won't affect the warranty unlike the Nexus One.
I REALLY hope that the seperated update stuff will be here sooner than later. I am actually quite surprised since I got the Hero that it's not in Android to start with.
And it's the only way Google can avoid fragmentation, which imho is one of the biggest threat to the platform so far.
Warranty issue also depends on where you live. They can put in as much warranty void thingies in as they want. But when my phone has a hardware issue and they don't want to fix because I changed something in the software they will be in trouble. And then they can try and prove my software change damaged the hardware.
I thought it was the other way around?

Also, don't forget that HTC has access to early builds and source of future versions because they are building terminals based on it. Porting Sense is probably being done right now, they don't have to wait like we do.

I could not find any information else where that wasnt from September time frame but i was woundering if the Droid Inc will be getting the new sense. I am currently using the Desire ROM that uses it and would really like to continue to use it if updates come out from HTC.
It hasn't been officially announced. It is possible but highly unlikely considering they are gonna wanna entice us incredible users to upgrade phones and spend more money with them

Same here. I was sold on the HTC Sensation but then heard that they locked it down like Fort Knox.
Going to the HTC event in Toronto on May 30th, see what the reps there have to say about this (probably nothing, but worth a try).
Great news indeed. Really hope they listen to their fans. As everyone else has said this will influence what phone I get next.
hope they will make the next nexus android phone ice-cream sandwiches
Sounds like something Motorola would say. Motorola actually said they would unlock the whole range ( carrier dependant) in late 2011 we'll have to see.
Did htc say they'd do anything like that? Hmm big load-a-stalling.
Desire is the source of all suffering.
wow probs to htc they listen to customers
Who would've thought...

It will certainly give me more options if the policy changes.
Being rootable is paramount.
I have to see it first to believe it. In my opinion HTC does not listen to customers. Based on the past when they would release very buggy firmware (eg touch pro 2 and hd2) and did not solve it. Custom roms were the only thing that made the devices great.
So after 4 HTC devices, my next one will be the Galaxy S 2.
Also, we what are their motives for doing it in the first place?
-Operators who don't like tethering, so won't sell their devices when it's possible to root?
-Don't like it when new sense versions are being ported to old devices?
-Thinking that locking everything down will sell them more devices?
I really hope this is not a marketing trick.... I'd really like future HTC phones to have unlock bootloaders we all know (maybe HTC too) that the roms our chefs make are by far better than the stock ones

I won't believe this till i see it.

The problem is that htc don't sell only hardware..They want sell Htc Sense
They do not want allow to flash an other rom on their devices
Htc Sense is great in my opinion, but I dont understand why they want force to use that..If really they will allow this, will be a great step for htc

Oh never HTC? Are you out of your mind?... Just because HTC got a day or 2 late makes u feel uncomfortable enough that.u won't buy most reliable brand?...
Talk of Sony.. I bought X10 mini launched in 2 010, they didn't even update that to Froyo...
Yeah.. The wait was excitement for a better software... I kept my phone running one Rom for 2 months... I don't waiting a day or 2 more...
There must be solid reason they got a bit late... I can imagine what could be going through their developers...
Just relax.. Chill out... Wait another day or 2...
at least they announced that u will get update...unlike sony who strictly said..No Updates...
Talk about Apple...I had the Iphone for more than 2 years. The updates to the OS never bring something really new, the main reason I figured Apple does then is to keep the phones locked. At least Android is much more flexible. You cannot compare a huge company like Apple that has to develop an update for just one product to an update for Android that has to be adapted for hundreds of different devices.
Actually this whole gingerbread fuss is becoming funny after a while...The only reason I want to have the official update is to see if it will be more battery efficient. I am runnning different Gingerbread Roms ( with Sense because I really like the integration) for a few months now and none of them really brought more battery life to my phone...

No JB ROM has Sense right now.
HTC has not released JB for any device as of yet. JB will come only with One X+. Even then it will probably take 2-3 months for Sense with JB to work for DHD. Atleast not unless One V or One S get their JB updates(if any).
I think our phone get old .. we should buy one x
Maybe the time has come to buy a new phone. Thanks for replys.

Yes, and an average user will not be happy with this. ROM flashers dont care, but normal users do
Sent from my Desire HD using xda premium
True, but they could have released the update, clearly stating in the update info screen that it will lead to loss of data. So then, only the users who want it would run it, while the others would simply cancel it. This is a no-brainer. Other companies have done this, so I don't see why HTC can't. Re-partitioning and loss of data is no excuse for a company to renege on their promised upgrade. At best, they could have released an RUU on HTCdev for our phone just like they did for the HTC Desire GB upgrade. That way only really knowledgeable users would run it.
The truth is, they never started work on ICS for the DHD at all. *Every* other HTC phone had an ICS leak a month or two before they officially got it. The DHD had none. They never started work on the DHD, because they didn't want to spend their time and money on the oldest phone in the list, expecting people to buy their new One series instead. That's a crap move. It wouldn't be that bad if they didn't promise the upgrade in the first place and then go back on their word, but they did. Motorola did the same thing with the Photon 4G and 2 other phones. At least we got Froyo > Gingerbread. Those phones were stuck on GB their entire life, and Motorola had the gall to offer a $100 discount (not cash-back) for customers of these phones, if they purchased newer Motorola phones.
On the other hand, you have Sony Mobile which us releasing alpha stage ROMs of upcoming upgrades to the community, along with kernel source code for the alpha ROM, taking suggestions from the community and actively working together to develop that ROM. That is how a company should be. Motorola is crap and HTC has gone far down that route. They just don't care. Sony as a company can't work to upgrade all their phones all the time too, because ultimately it costs time and money, but to counter that they are actively helping the community by providing drivers and binaries for custom ROMs. This is the reason more or less all Sony Xperia phones (low-end to high-end) have official CM support. HTC and Motorola make great phones but their business practices and ideologies are just wrong.
