how to replace the screen? - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

mate has a large scratch on his nexus and also has a broken nexus that the repair shop said he could keep last time round, and just wondering if anyone has a guide on screen replacement? as nothing on you tube

You might want to check ifixit site for a teardown. After that I think you can do it pretty easily.

ok cool, so looks like if you wanna replace the frame and the glass (which i do) its fairly simple, replacing just the glass seems to be a pain!

Is the scratch kinda at the top of the phone starting from the left side going up diagonally? If so, there seems to be a lot of GN's with this same problem.

Get a guitar pic and put it into the edges of the screen, ifixit has the teardown. When you put it back together, just put the new glass there instead.

Where you to buy the glass of Galaxy Nexus? I will try on ebay, nut nothing. Can you link the store?

I bought a new screen from www.gounlock.com. It's a genuine Samsung part. All that came was the glass with the lcd bonded to it. Ifixit didn't take the phone apart far enough to show how to replace the part I got. I saw a video on CNET (I believe) where they tore down a Verizon GN, but again, they stopped short of removing the actual glass/lcd.
At some point, I'll build up the nerve to tear it apart and see how it's stuck together. Hopefully someone else will do it first, otherwise I'll take pictures.

the screen in the last pic on ifixit looks the same as the screen for sale on www.gounlock.com. did you not get it the glass/lcd and frame as one part?

On all phones with Super AMOLED whatever displays, the LCD and Digitizer are one part. You cannot buy them separately. Its been like that since the original Galaxy S series.

neotekz, this is what I got from https://www.gounlock.com/
I guess I'll need to pry the old part off the frame, then rebond it. Only one way to find out

Bummer. As I stated if he has a spare nexus that the op can keep why bother trying to rip the thing apart possibly braking it when he can change the whole LCD plus frame.
P.S. All Superamoled screens are glued with the digitiser. They are technically one part and that's a fact.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda premium

I remember changing it on my Droid Charge. If I recall...I had to pry it off from the front using a guitar pick while I pushed from the back through one of the openings...it was held in place by sticky tape. Not too bad.
Edit: Yes - the digitizer and LCD is one piece.

i didnt know you can even get just the glass and digitizer like that, was it cheaper? all the ones i've seen online are $200+ and comes with the frame.

Its not wise to try and separate the display and the digitizer as you have a very high chance of damaging the display which means wasting more money.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using XDA

I expected it was going to come with the frame and I was a little surprised to see that it wasn't included. I think what I got was $250-ish. I'm now debating on if I even want to attempt to install it since I can't find anybody else who's pulled the screen off the frame.

so you are replacing a broken screen? i would think that it wont be that hard to remove the broken LCD since you don't have to worry about damaging it, you just have to be careful not to break the frame. i would use a heat gun to heat up the glass a bit and see if that loosens the glue and use a guitar pick to pry it off just be careful it doesnt get too hot and melt the frame. if you end up doing this can you take some pics and keep us updated.

That's is exactly what I did on my Droid Charge. ^^^^^^^
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using XDA

Just an update. I finally built up the nerve to replace my screen. Other than the fact that the screen is permanently bonded to the frame, it wasn't too bad. In order to remove the original screen and replace with the one I got from gounlock.com I had to destroy the original one. It took awhile to clean the remnants of the original screen from the frame, but once it was clean, it was back together in 5 minutes.
Overall, it was pretty easy.

Moisture went inside my first gnex. So I bought a second one ( we don't have insurance in my country). I bought one with a broken screen less than $100 and I took the screen out of the first one and into the second. Ifixit helped a lot, I applied little pressure to seperate the screen from the frame. Didn't have a puck at the moment.

So once you removed the Glass and the Digitizer from the frame how did you get the new glass and digitizer on the frame?
And how did you get the original off the frame? Did you do what the one guy said and heat it up till the glue melted some?

Since I saw A request of a teardown (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1443139) I decided to do one at my work and since i own the TMO SGS2, I wanted to share.
And i must say this phone is all housing, compared to the Skyrocket and way different than the Skyrocket on the inside. (People had been saying they are similar or the same)
PLEASE THIS IS NOT A GUIDE. DO NOT ATTEMPT TO USE THIS FOR DISSASEMBLY OR ANY WAY TO FIX YOUR DEVICE. I AM NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR ANY DAMAGE DONE IF YOU ATTEMPTED IT.
I work doing this and I've been almost a year and a half working in repairing and Programming androids. (and Blackberry)

Yes the Phone I used had liquid damage
And Finally the s2 (Top) and Skyrocket (bottom) SIM reader, Camera, USB port, ear speaker etc are different (you obviously can see it)
I didnt Separated the LCD/ Digitizer from frame because the risk of breaking lcd/Digitizer is VERY HIGH! I just wanted to show the phone on the inside!
Hope this Contributes
dont worry about breaking the lcd, this phone uses amoled+, which is flexible(but dont breakt he gorilla glass...obviously)

Terrific stuff, thanks for sharing!
How many screws, and types of screws, did you have to remove?
How difficult is it to replace the screen assembly? Does the entire phone have to be disassembled to get to it? Can you provide a few pictures?

Just the six you see on the back. Once you pop the back the board feels almost loose. I had to be careful cause when poping the back the board almost went with it. the screen alone with the frame felt rather flimsy I guess taking that screen of can be compare between the hassle with the Evo 4g and the Inspire (which I find the Inspire to be one of the stressing phones out for screen replacement.) Due to the fact you can damage the frame in the process. You have to dig the screen out. Unlike the i9100 which came out fast with a little heat.

But still its a risk I mean replacing it its not cheap at all! Almost $230 for the screen assembly. I am still trying to handle these screens (at least i was able to separate the i9100 screen from the frame with out causing further damage than it had, so I guess thats a start.)
If i get a phone for screen replacement Ill surely take pics.

While the technology is capable of being applied to flexible media the amoled displays in our phones are applied to hard glass media and in fact are more likely to break than the gorilla glass leaving the amoled display shattered behind the gorilla glass. This is why you see so many "broken screen" phones for sale on ebay that don't turn on, the phone doesn't appear to fully boot when the amoled display is broken...

Also, i asked my SRSS, and he confirmed that since it's a new SKU, the 60 day rule applies...and then proceeded to inform me that so long as we got the return box sealed on Sunday, auditors won't be able to see it on Monday lol.

are you asking where to get a screen, or how to replace the screen?
As far as where, you'll have to do some searching around. Sprint techs like us have the luxury of harvesting screens off returned phones (normally used for repairs)...but epic screens are generally so far and few between i doubt you'd find a tech willing to sell one to you.
If you're asking how, that's easy. Unscrew the six screws underneath the battery cover. Then using a really thin piece of plastic or even your fingernails, begin to pry the area where the bezel meets the glass down both sides and the top (the bezel-back-frame almost fits like a cap on the screen). Then just lift the bezel-frame from the screen in an out then down motion (basically, the top separates first, then you'll have to go down and out to get the bottom part off; you don't want to pry the bottom part straight out so as not to damage the charging port). During this, you'll likely see your headset jack move with the frame, that's ok because it moves pretty freely inside.
Once inside, you'll see two flat Phillips head screws, unscrew those. You won't need to unscrew the third tiny one in the upper right hand corner. There are several cables (3 or 4) that are plugged into ports, just unplug them, nothing fancy. Just make sure you look closely so you don't miss one. Then, the motherboard (which is roughly shaped like an "L" ) just lifts up. Reverse directions to put in a new screen. Easy squeezy lemon Japanesey.

also, the tech at my store is planning on getting the white E4GT, removing the gray, and painting it (he hasnt decided on red or blue). depending on how that goes, i may be doing the same. a nice candy apple red with some metal flake in place of the gray would be gorgeous IMO. i think the gray looks like cheap, crappy plastic
EDIT: ill post back with pictures once he's done, and if i do mine
If painting your phone makes you wary or one lacks skills to attempt such a task I believe you can also purchase self adhesive colored skins as well.

Quick teardown of the optimus g..

I work in a repair shop, and this phone seems new enough that I couldn't find a teardown anywhere.. so we snapped some quick pictures so people will know what to expect. It is pretty straight forward, not a whole lot can go wrong(for the most part).

Remove the two screws on the bottom, then with guitar picks, your finger nails, or something that won't damage the screen/frame(non metal is ideal) pull the edges of the frame away from the phone- the bottom is most difficult, that is where you have to put in the work.
Also note where the volume and power buttons are, there is flex cable behind there- do not slide tools along inside as you may rip them, just carefully pry the cover from the sides avoiding those as needed.. also remember part of the back is glass(at least that is what I read and it appears to be).
Pull this frame off by removing the screws from the holes that you can obviously see. If I get time later I may circle them in red, but it should be obvious.
Two screws to remove from the mic/speaker at the bottom, then it can be pried off- be careful, but not a lot of risk of damage.
You should be able to see the connectors that were removed to remove the board- as I said, this is a quick walkthru, not a detailed teardown- enough to give the general idea.
This is with the screen removed- basically you heat the front of the screen and the back of the frame to loosen the glue that holds the lcd/digitizer in- there IS glue around the edges of the LCD(and on our replacement) which makes it nearly impossible to remove without breaking.. but you likely wouldn't be removing it unless it is broken. As you can see, there is no special connectors or board on the bottom to light up the digitizer you have to be careful of, so this isn't that difficult.
Here is our replacement screen, there weren't many vendors that had them, but this was found on ebay and appeared to be quality very close to the one removed, enough we couldn't see a difference. Make sure you use plenty of adhesive if it wasn't already applied before you purchased it.
Reverse to put back together- we had 0 issues, the most difficult part is removing the shell without breaking the glass on the back of the phone.
Hopefully this is helpful to someone, or at least will show them it isn't TOO difficult. Feel free to hit the thanks button if it was helpful, if it is appreaciated I may throw a more detailed guide up when we get another in for repair.

Well, the tech who was doing the work wanted to take his time to make sure nothing was harmed in the process.. now that we see it is like the average teardown, we could definitely do a video on the next one- that was the plan.

Do you mean the power and volume flex cables that are glued to the edges beneath the back cover? We've done so many phones at this point we sort of forget how simple it is to make a mistake there.. I'll note that in the teardown instructions above.
If anyone else has any feedback or suggestions, or want to provide better pictures, let me know and I will gladly update- I just wanted to make sure there was SOMETHING out there for people who may be looking for it..
Since this phone is susceptible to glass cracks on the back due to temperature change (Like the one I purchased), a tutorial on how to replace just the glass on the back would be helpful.
Thanks!

Dropped my phone a few days ago, bottom right quarter of the screen has no touch now and a nasty crack in my screen.
Which seller did you buy your replacement screen from? And was quality good?
I will try and post a video, but this is my business phone and am in a rush to get it back to fully usable condition. Thinking i may end up buying the LCD/Digitizer/Glass as I have never separated a digitizer/glass from the LCD before.
I just got mine back today from an LG service centre. I had the same crack about 3/4" from the bottom with no functionality below that. Total cost of repair was $95. Not too bad since I saw the LCD/Digitizer for $50 on ebay. Plus I retain my mfg warranty.

Sasktel. LG uses a company out of Ontario for the phone repairs in Canada. Their name is All Tech Neek. I also contacted them independantly and they will fix your phone without dealing with your service provider. I just let Sasktel handle the shipping and stuff. Also, they require a deposit prior to cover shipping and assessment labour incase you decide not to have the phone fixed, but the deposit goes toward the repair if you decide to have them repair it.
Hope this helps!!

I, too, have slightly broken glass on my phone and have been considering replacing just the glass, but the display, digitizer and glass seem to be glued together on these AMOLED screens and I heard separating them isn't easy.
I might just play the 180€ and get it repaired at there official service center :/
It's much like the S3. I used the screen replacement videos from them as a guide. The key is to use lots of heat and work slowly. It comes off just fine from the digitizer. Getting it started can be a bit difficult to get under the glass, but once it's started just gently progress along and use a blow dryer on low heat. They are glued together, but can be separated with heat and slowly prying them off. Watch the S3 videos and you'll get the idea. I couldn't find and galaxy nexus videos but the S3 ones worked fine. At one point everyone said the same thing about them that you can't replace just the glass too can they are glued together. But they're quite separable.

Thanks, I will look into it some more. I just can't really justify spending the 180 I was quoted for to get the work done by some repair centre or spend 120 on the actual screen and digitizer and then doing it myself when this phone is hardly worth that price.

Going to try fix it myself but was wondering if any members have had success in repairing a cracked screen.
What I want to know is is it possible to just buy and replace the glass? It does look possible going by some of the youtube tutorials but others say the only way to get a proper fix is to buy both the glass and digitizer. Thing is though I'm looking at a bill of a little over £10 for the glass or about £130 (cheapest I've seen) for both.
Anyone had success repairing only the glass and was the screen just as responsive? I've also heard it's very hard to get it perfect with air bubbles becoming an issue. Every single mobile repair shop have quoted me for both as they won't even attempt just replacing the glass so I guess it must be hard.
PS. I notice from searching that these threads can lead to a "gorilla glass shouldn't break" discussion. Really hope it can be avoided here as it usually ends up with the original question not getting answered. I do my best to look after my phone but don't like covers bulking up my phone so I take the chance. I have a screen protector on and that's it. As much as I try to be careful with my phone I have dropped it on a few occasions and it's been fine but I guess my luck ran out this time. The phone fell flat on it's screen onto mono block and I just knew this time it wasn't going to be ok when I picked it up
Thanks
Mate, if you try to only replace the glass, you have to get rid of old glue and use new glue for the new glass, will be hard, but if you find a solution for this I might be interested too.
I have a small crack on the top corner of screen which does not come over the screen or cam, but I also would want to change my phones bezel to dark grey. It's so freaking cool! :d

Just wondering if either of you had a case on when it happened?
I'm trying to ascertain if/which covers are a waste of time for protecting the screen.
Best of luck fixing them though.

Hi folks.
Dropped my phone yesterday and completely shattered the screen. Phone still works fine so I'm sure it's just the glass that's broke.

I had a case of broken glass, watched a lot of videos thinking about doing it myself but in the end decided to just let someone else do it. About screen responsiveness, I have a personal feeling that it's more responsive than before, maybe there is less glue (or none at all now) than before so the glass is closer to a screen. There are no air bubbles so maybe no glue Personally I think it would be enough to put glue on the sides of screen just to create a seal against dirt getting between glass and display, it would also be easier in case of another broken glass
Here in Poland it cost me 75$ (UPS 2 way + glass + repair) and took 4 days total. I'm quite happy with the results
? Should have used a case...

No case can protect you if your phone lands display down on uneven ground.....
Try dx.com
They generally sell spare parts of everything quite cheap. They do deliver free aswell (international) but waiting period could be 10 - 20 days.

Happened to me too.
I took it to the Samsung Repair Center and they did the assessment and told me that I could take the phone and that they'd call when they had the glass for the repair. 3 days later they called, I took the the phone there, 40 minutes later it was brand new.
They charged $80 for the service.

Op's phone landed flat....
Thanks for the replies guys. Looks like not many have actually done this.
Think I'm going to give separating the glass a chance. If I mess up the digitizer I can always just order another one anyway
I've had a single line crack right across the screen for a couple of months now. Phone still works like there is no crack, and the cost of a repair (plus the chance of a botched repair) is too high to make me want to do it. Got a Galaxy Note 8 to replace it - but then its sim slot went faulty, so back to the Note 2 while that gets fixed under warranty.
My honest advice is to let a pro repair your screen. On my previous phone I tried to replace the glass. Then I tried to replace glass and didgitiser. I warched the tutorials. Bought all the right tools. In the end my phone was "lost" so I got a new one on my insurance.
Save your self time money and stress. Send it to a pro.

It ain't worth just replacing the glass, way too footery and likely to get dust/fingerprints between the display and the digitiser, if you can even get it separated without damaging the display.... I cracked the glass on mine, a Samsung service centre in the UK called Regenersis tried to rip me off and quoted for a new display + glass and a new main logic board, all to the tune of £300! There's absolutely nothing wrong with the main board and the phone works perfectly, they were just trying to make a quick buck or didn't want to do the work, figuring I was some n00b and would just say go-ahead.....
Wow for £300 you can buy another one and sell the cracked screen one on eBay

My Note 2 also met an unfortunate fate of glass-floor impact. I went down the cheap route after a lot of research and paid £30 for a glass, tools and 2M tape kit. It did the job, but I find that after a day or two, especially in this heatwave we're having at present in the UK the screen does start to lift a bit and the responsiveness of the screen does drop considerably. Pressing the screen down brings it back to normal however.
Also the cheap route brings about what looks like moisture under the screen. (attached) It's actually just where the glass is touching the digitiser, and only occurs in the middle of the screen. I assume this is only because the repair tape is on the outside of the digitiser so has some wiggle room. It'd probably not exist, or lift, if a LOCA glue was used or an all over repair adhesive was applied to the entire glass. Downside to both of these is future repairs are just as tricky as the initial repair, with lots of headgun/hairdryer use. Also with the adhesive I heard that it's very hard to get on without imperfections. I guess it depends on how well you can repair tech and/or how flush with cash you are at the time.
