I saw this thread in the Epic and Rezound forums and related to most of them.. so just post and complete this sentence "You know you're rooted when.."
Examples:
masaidjet: You know you're rooted when you tell a neighborhood hoe to " wipe her cache "
wscott9903: You know you're rooted when 1/2 of your apps require superuser permission.
feralicious: You know you're rooted when your spouse tells you they're leaving you and taking the kids and you think "perfect timing, (insert dev name here) just released a new ICS ROM".
jayochs: you know you're rooted when your phones buggy as hell lol
putney1477: You know you're rooted when, you husband, wife, significant other gets a new phone and says, don't you dare come near this phone, it works fine!
jackpot08: You know your rooted when when spend more time flashing roms than using your phone
You know you're rooted when all of your iPhone using friends use you specifically as a reason why Android devices are buggy and always need work.

Hello everybody,
I..am...retarded. I saw a lot of dust in my microphone port so naturally i got a can of compressed air to try to "fix" it. Well it broke my microphone, it still works but i would have to scream like a woman in a porno for anyone to hear me...not an option lol. So I'm running CM7 and I need a way to put everything as close to stock as possible so that the technician won't update my phone to the newest gingerbread update. I found THIS post but I don't know which one to install (being the noob that I am). I plan to uninstall ALL of the apps that require root permissions and back them up to my sd card...then install the stock ROM and hope and pray the technician doesn't see that i'm rooted.
So what do you guys think? is that enough to fool a technician? And what rom do i need to install? deodexed or odexed? and what's zip aligned?
Sorry for the noobiness but my mind has gone blank xP
thanks for all the help
If you are S-OFF just flash a sense rom and let it ota update. If you used unrevoked to root your phone then the ota cannnot set it S-ON. Then take it in. When u get phone back flash a custom recovery and go from there. Also put in an old sd-card that has no signs of custom roms and such. That's what i would do
Honestly if I were you I would just use a bluetooth headset. If you return the phone to sprint you are going to be screwed over, for now at least, with the unrooted 2.3.3. Wait till they get a root for that, then get sprint to replace it.
Unless you get a mentally handicapped tech they will check to see if you have s-off. They see you do and you are screwed.

your mic is built into your top panel. so replacing the phone is POSSIBLE, but check with your local sprint store and see if they can just replace the touch panel. thats what we do at my store.

You better be extremely adamant about not updating the OS. Like almost paranoid about it, people upfront often won't relay that info to the tech. I'd even put a mini post it on the battery or inside the back of the battery casing saying "DO NOT UPDATE SOFTWARE" or something of the likes. lol
The sprint tech said he couldn't repair it but didn't give a reason. Since they are sending a replacement can't they just use the parts from that phone to repair mine and send back that phone?

Rooting is up to u man. If u want to do it. As far asks what u get it depends on what u flash. If u just want root then u have access to your /system partition. Use apps that require root permission. With a custom recovery U can flash custom kernels for overclock and undervolt purpose. You can flash custom ROMs.

I would say no right now, to be honest.
I had a ton of troubles finding the right downloads to get it rooted. In the end, I rooted and installed Starburst and wasn't really impressed; I feel like there was nothing to even be able to edit. It was like running the stock ROM with a new lockscreen.
I'd hold off until development increases on this device. I'm probably going to unroot mine.
rooting is lots of fun, IF you know what the hell you are doing, BEFORE you start the process
Most problems that people have come from NOT READING and learning about it before they do it..
Just like anything else in life, if you don't read about it, and learn about it BEFORE you decide to do it, you will have problems.
It just blows my mind how many people get a phone, and root it and start flashing stuff without having any idea what they are doing, and then freak out when some thing goes wrong, and post frantic "please help me" stuff all over the internet..
Take the time to learn about it BEFORE you do it, and ask your questions BEFORE you start messing with your phone..If you won't do that, can't do that, or aren't smart enough to understand what you are reading, then don't root; this is a fantastic phone even if you never root it..
I was pessimistic aswell and took the plunge last night. Running Starburst its not the greatest but MUCH better than stock. Battery life is ludicrous. And much more fluid and responsive... My main reason was battery life and oh boy dose it help!

THE root method will be the same.
Yeah, I just unrooted, actually.
I had a lot of fun going from ROM to ROM on my EVO4G, but right now there's just not enough out there for me to run away from the stock ROM. Once development really gets going, and maybe once Cyanogen hops on board with something legit, I'll root again.
..plus, I'm probably going to have to turn this phone in, so I had to unroot. I'm having this weird battery issue where it doesn't charge while the phone is on (well, it charges, but suppppppper slow and the phone gets hot as hell)
Speaking of that, if anyone reads this, any ideas on if I'll be able to get a brand new phone? I had to turn in my Evo once or twice, and they gave me a refurb both times. Screw that, I paid like $450 for this phone only 3ish weeks ago. There's no way I'll take a refurb.
Totally up to you dude. I am rooted myself and so far it's been great. Running Starburst latest ROM with OC. Great stuff so far.

I agree its totally up to the person but not like rooting and then unrooting is you difficult.... Hey may favorite line I have read in xda is "It aint yours till you root it" - words to live by....lol
Rooting is pretty easy on this phone, but I know there are not a lot of Devs compared to like the Evo 3d. The Devs we do have are all like pros at developing though, so they will be able to update and bring new things frequently. I rooted on Starburst's rom and I love it, because it's so Stock that it seems like its still and E4GT, but so different that I know its more smooth.
So im sewing u guys all like this starburst rom....I think I will wait lil bit longer to root when more roms comes out

Hi All,
Had my HOX about a week. I have rooted my previous phones, but the current state of unlocking / rooting / CWM makes me a little nervous this time round.
Losing the ability to get OTA updates, along with the issues about getting root / installing CWM / custom roms and the number of bricked phones / issues still prevalent is giving me second thoughts.
I'm curious as to how many people think the same or how many have jumped all in!
Am I being a chicken and should I wait for the process of Unlocking/Rooting/CWM/Custom Roms to stabilize, or should I man up?
I love the XDA forums and the Rom developers, but don't want to risk my brand new HOX!
Im currently stock and waiting for s-off to be done without the need for htcdev.

If YOU are confident then you unlock the bootloader and start tweaking your device. I have rooted and unlocked the device now trying out different ROM's. I for one is flash junk. So if you think you can void your warranty then go ahead have fun. Or wait until S-OFF comes. I suspect it's gonna be sooner than we think because last I heard someone is already working on it.
Staying Stock for now
Im unlooked rooted have custom rom plus touch recovery. Did everything in under half an hour. Everything works like with other phones (as far as the mass of users are concerned) but yeah you can flash everything backup and restore if anything goes wrong.. There are pleanty of instructions for windows or mac on this forum also ways for unbricking. I was worried that it was too early for this stuff yet too but everything is fine.

I'm totally with you on that. I'm hanging fire to check out the OTA and see if it brings better stability, battery etc. I will root eventually, especially if a really sound vanilla ROM comes along and I don't have to lose the camera features.

My biggest reasons for rooting my last two phones was:
Internal space,
Bloatware,
Latest software,
However on this device, I have plenty of space, ability to disable bloatware and up-to-date with the latest software.

i basically disabled all 3 apps. do not use them so i just disabled them. then google books i do not use and the same with google movies. everything else i left it as it is
so i would presume it would be the same with t-mobile apps mate
regarding background services i would not tinker with if i was you..only disable google apps like google plus or google messenger if you do not use them and the same goes for google books and movies if you do not use that either....anything else just leave it as it is...and disable any tmobile crap
Looks like I'm in the majority, then.

Hey all, first off, please don't flame. I am totally unfamiliar with Samsung. I just got my mom a gnex for mothers day and am going to root it but I keep seeing all these thread posts saying Google wallet is broken scattered through the ROM threads. I don't know if I'm even gonna put a custom rom on her phone, I just want root for maintenance. And I really don't have time to seriously study tons of threads. If anyone could advise about
A( what is breaking wallet
B( if I unlock bootloader and put on custom recovery, do I need to restore to factory recovery to flash radio updates ?
Ç( if there is a ROM that is pretty stock but more importantly stable, it'd be super appreciated to hear about it.
I run AOKP on me Evo 4g, but the random reboots are quite frequent. Is it more stable here?
By the way, it's a sprint galaxy nexus. Thanks much for any pointers.
Looking for good kernel for battery more than performance. Also, it seems to me on Sammy, you can't flash radio updates on custom kernel or custom recovery. Am I reading wrong?
Much thank to any who take time to respond. Thanks.

Don't root and ROM your mother's Galaxy Nexus.
Jesus people. Leave it stock. Don't need to do maintenance, don't need to do anything. Leave it stock and you'll save yourself and her all kinds of trouble.
Point taken, but the thing is she's been dealing with a Samsung moment for >2yrs . The thing won't even hardly make phone calls anymore, takes about 45sec for SMS to open etc. She's always asking me if it can be fixed (cuz she knows I spend 24-7 on my Evo and xda). I always tell her I'd have to root it to really try to do anything (wipe caches, etc).. but i got her a gnex figuring if there's issues, I can fix for her easily (also got it for her cuz I figured if development on Evo LTE goes south, I'll trade phones with her.
Anyhow, was hoping for clarification about do I have to have stock recovery and ROM to update radios etc. On HTC Evo you don't, but it seems like I've seen talk of that here.
Thanks anyone.
Edit: and martonikaj, I'll keep your info in mind.
Just trying to figure where the partition checks are with Sammy. I thought I read that if your kernel is custom, you can't flash updated radios.

I understand her frustration with her current device and your willingness to help, but you need to keep her device stock. You don't need to flash new radios to the device. Just leave it stock and you'll both be better off in the long run. The cons vastly outweigh the pros when considering rooting/ROMing a device of a completely novice/uninformed user that doesn't need any extra issues.
Just FYI, there is no check on the Nexus. You can be running whatever kernel and ROM you want and flash radios if your bootloader is unlocked. But again, this will never be necessary, the phone will work just fine on stock radios.
I super appreciate your input. You have answered questions I have. I am one of those who deeply feel that if your Android is not rooted, then you should buy a non Android device. It's Only yours if you control its dalvik and can wipe caches
Need recovery for that.

I'll agree on your point if your mom wants to read up on what root is, follow an XDA guide, learn how to use command prompt and Fastboot, and root her own device.
Until then, leave it stock.

Exactly. Google will only mass release versions that are finished and user friendly. Don't root it, it won't make her experience any better.
I've rooted devices for a few not-quite-as-technically-savvy-as-me friends in the past, and I've always regretted it - as have they. You shouldn't own a rooted device unless you rooted it yourself and know how to operate it. Otherwise, it's just asking for problems and complications. I got so sick of the calls from friends in other countries, "Hey, you rooted my phone and now I can't install an update that my carrier is pushing. Fix it!" Or if it's not a cry for help, I'd catch blame for any little issue that randomly occurred on the device. "My phone just randomly rebooted itself, this is obviously because you broke it when you rooted it."
I can only imagine how much worse it would be with a mother.
If you absolutely need the ability to wipe cache and dalvik (not really an issue unless your flashing ROMs, which your mother won't be, but whatever), you can always do it through fastboot.

ok Hi everyone!
no i do not have ADO (Attention deficit order) or any other brain dissorder! just old slow and feeble!
i got the HTC EVO 4G my two year contract with the sprint WOGS is up about two months ago my phone died and best buy got me a brand new one!
then i see that new samsung galaxy note 2 and ooooowww
So my old brain kicks in and says mod your evo
ok at this point
so i rooted mt evo 4g with HTCDEV and revolutionary some how i ended up installing revolutionary but the phone still works
but yes i did not do a backup of the original system on the phone!!
well i am now thinking since i am rooted and s-off abot a custom ROM??
ok this is were the old man comes in
i only wish do do this once and most of you all here it seems do this every day as a type of hobby
what i would like to find in a custom ROM is everthing to work as the phone works now but hopefully even better
and to get rid of all this BS poopwear sprint has loaded into this phone
a ROM that looks great and new and as stable as stock?? with maybe some new apps to play with
So the Question is? Is there a ROM out here filled with the above???
Question 2
when you root a phone and s-off then do a custom rom, does sprint know what you have done or can they find out
and if so can they mess with you or bug you??
no i do not see men in black everywere!
just have seen post about watermarks and sprint knows! just was hoping to get the truth here!
I will start with your second question. The only way Sprint will know is if you have to take it on for service. So no worries there.
As far as a ROM goes there are many solid, stable, fully working roms. You will be limited to the older gingerbread roms. All the newer ones lack drivers for front camera and Wimax (4g). Now to find what you want will take searching on your part. There are a few different versions of sense which is HTC's launcher and then you have AOSP which looks completely different. ok Hi everyone!
no i do not have ADO (Attention deficit order) or any other brain dissorder! just old slow and feeble!
i got the HTC EVO 4G my two year contract with the sprint WOGS is up about two months ago my phone died and best buy got me a brand new one!
then i see that new samsung galaxy note 2 and ooooowww

Since you have been using the EVO for a few years and are used the the Sense UI I would recommed
starting out with The Classic. A very solid ROM by tommytomatoe. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1312414
So many out there, all great, most of devs remove all the crap when we buid the roms guess it comes down to what you like.
You like stock, or themes,

The first two you listed will work 100% but the last one is a jelly bean ROM that has no front camera or 4G. Plus other minor issues. The classic would be like your stock ROM only way better.

HTC EVO 4G yup the old phone
Sorry if i sound like a dumb ass
i have gone to alot of web sites trying to dig all the info in can from the words i can make sence from!
i am not here to beat no one up or down!! i had asked help from one site when i went to root my phone
and was kind of kick for being a noob and asking a question the guy thought everyone should have known!
that is why i am here! i am sure you all have looked at other web sites about all this rooting around and roms.
what you all do in customizing the cell phones is ??? really i do not have a better word GREAT!! (each generation has there own words and phrases, and sometimes we have to teach the old people like are parents the new stuff that has come out)
i would say this i am like all of you! but way older i think and definitely not any way near as smart as you all are here
as to stock or theme? i take it theme is the way the new rom will look??
i will say this as the way for the last 2 years looking at my phone well im borrrred with it
if it had a big pair of breast attached to it well i would not be here "SORRY LADIES!!!"
so yes new looking and way better to play with! STOCK ? no i had that
stable is my concerne with a new rom as once i do the flash (flahing the rom) to the phone i do not want to have to worry about this software to fix this bug or that bug then digging up this file to get this or that to work!
does this make any sence to you all??
ok an old man would think (sorry if im wrong here!!) if one was to install a new rom on ????phone all that would be needed
would be one file! do the vol. and power button go to revolutionary install zip file from sd card wait and poof your done!!
ya ya what joint is that old fart smoking!!!
AGAIN THANKS FOR ALL YOUR HELP HERE
Classic.
Maybe Synergy if you don't care about CIQ.
I ran AlterROM for awhile: it might be in your comfort zone and it provides a ton of installation options if you want to explore a little.
But really just start with Classic. The "updater" app included with Classic may need some kind of fix , read the last few pages of that thread to get current.
Have fun!

Definitely go with classic. It was my first rom and I fell in love with it. Great battery life, has themes, and is very smooth.

HTC EVO 4G yup the old phone
Ok i will jump in here and do the ROM] The Classic v0.1.0 - finale
and i will download the ]TN_Elousions_3_Rooted_latest_OTA_5.07.651.6_supers onic_Deoxed_2/19/1
and try that one later
so my dumb old man question is now
1 do the vol down and power
since i have revolutionary installed i go to recovery then the revolutionary screen pops up and from that i chose install zip file from sd card
and that is it?? or do i do the same for both files this one v0.1.0p3 Supermagic Finale and this one classic.cx entry
from this web page http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1312414
or is this more over my head
The Tn elousions 3 is stock I have not done anything with that yet other then deoxing it.
My elousions 2.2.2 is the trixed out one. Just to let you no.
Don't forget to wipe dalvic and dalvic cache
Better yet wipe everything except SD card.
Make a nandroid backup before you do anthing.

HTC EVO 4G yup the old phone
well i did the classic rom
the first time i flashed it and it all loaded up anything to do with the internet would not work
thought maybe i got a bad download from this crappy satellite hughes.net system we are on
so i redownloaded it again and wee hee it all works!!!
just wished the bottom screen buttons had some kind of lay out like the evo 4g did
phone, apps, etc.
i will run this and see what happens i hope no bugs pop up
ya and you are right there is alot of do-hickies added to this!
i just hope i do not mess something up now
if he had put in the butttons for the phone, apps, etc
from my stand point this rom would be the greatist
but it is my first rom i have flashed so who knows maybe there is one that is better out there!!!
I would like too THANK YOU ALL!!! Very much for your GREAT WORK HERE!! and your help with me on this venture!!!
THANKS ALLOT!!
Bill
Haha actually I agree with you, I was never a fan of what Tommy called the "Ghost Rosie". Ironically it's one of the things that really distinguishes the ROM and it took a lot of work for him to make it do that.
Anyway I'm pretty sure you can "turn off" that feature and bring back a always-visible phone button, either by a tweak (changing a setting that Tommy provided in some control panel somewhere) or via a mod (some flashable zip that modifies that Rosie).
Or you can always download a custom launcher from the market.

The jelly bean roms are not filled with bloat ware, they come with the apps needed for a root user to do the right things. Plus they are pretty stable at this point, just minor things that don't work, except it would be nice if we could get 4G Wimax back on the latest roms. Front facing camera just needs a driver as well as Wimax, but I do not miss those things as I am connected to wifi mostly.
