Anyone else sticking with Stock?

Coming from the Vibrant and G2X, I use to flash roms about once or twice, maybe more, a day! With this phone, I just think it's perfect the way it is. I want to run the OS the way Google intended without much intervention. I tried the HD rom last night and it looked and felt the same as the stock rom, so I quickly switched back. No offense to Mike, but if I'm gonna have something so similar to stock, might as well have stock with official support.
Anyone doing the same?

i refuse to stick with stock anything regardless of how 'good' it may be. even with this Nexus, i didn't like stock.
i want to be able to change things however i want them, including overclock/undervolt/etc...
the last time i stuck with 'stock' was probably when i had the original RAZR back in the day(that and the Rezound as i believe they're still waiting on root for that thing)

you'd be surprised what kind of battery life you get with a custom rom and kernel. it's a significant upgrade. that fact alone justifies going custom

I'm going to wait until the custom roms and kernels establish themselves before I go with a non-stock build. I will leave stock sooner or later though for sure.

I'm also going to be ruining rooted in stock room.
It is been a very long time since I don't see a clean stable room. Number one priority today is to support as many devices as possible, quality and stability comes last. Sad.

How could u go from flashing multi roms a day then out of all the phones u choose not do it with the nexus that's just unheard of

I used to flash a lot of roms on my old phone, trying to stick to stock on this one. I keep getting tempted though.. especially as I haven't had the 4.0.2 update yet. It's only a minor update but just the fact that I don't have it yet keeps bugging me and making me want to root

Nope, not unheard of at all. I have the same position.

This is the first phone I like 100% stock. I will probably get a custom kernel / cm9 when it comes out.

Im sticking to stock rom till my store warrenty is up. Just wanna make sure that the phone works the way its meant to before I start messing with it.

I came from the galaxy s captivate. I used to flash a lot but with the galaxy nexus, I didn't even unlock the boot loaders. I will just stay stock forever!

Waiting for things to get a bit better understood/stable before doing ROMs, but definitely will at some point for better battery life, tether etc...

I guess I'm waiting for Google to put out a very stable build that developers can go from. Google is very quick with updates so this should happen soon.
My previous flashing was done to make up for staggering shortcomings with the device and manufacturers that dragged their feet with updates. I don't think this will be, and hasn't been, the case with the Nexus.
4.0.3 is a good start for a base with roms but there are still some issues that I want officially resolved by Google before I start flashing a bunch of stuff from independent developers.

Mine's still stock, I'm just enjoying ICS as it is for the moment.
When I do decide to root and flash ROMs/kernal, I'm just glad that the partitions aren't like the partitions on the GSII, the recovery and kernal on the same partition had me spinning for a while on my Sprint GSII.

I believe if you go Settings->About Phone->System Update, you can hit the button that says check for update and it will ping the server and ask if an update is available. You can do that if you want 4.0.2 which honestly why wouldn't you, it's just a bug fixer.

Like many others, I've rooted every other Android phone I've owned, usually within the day of purchasing it. However, in this case I don't feel a need. Maybe once a fully stable CM9 build is available I'll bother, but for now it's not worth my time and effort.

I will at least root and use wireless tether for now.

I am keeping mine stock for a few more weeks until the rooms start getting stable. I find that known issues get fixed in rooms much quicker than waiting for Samsung to address them.

phone arriving on wednesday - first things to do?

ello guys.
going from my 2 year old htc desire to this....
so...what are the first things to do with this galaxy nexus?
Vital apps needed?
specific things to do in the settings to make it run better?
it would be nice to make a guide to follow.
first thing ive done so far is buy a TPU S line case, and Expertshield screen protector.
If the battery life is rubbish i'll have to get the extension pack....but hardly anyone in the UK seems to sell them...lots of korea sales for genuine ones on ebay.
would a non-genuine thing still be as good?
heard of this dodgy issue with a 'yellowy' tint screen - what to do there? have to root the phone?
etc.etc...

Unlock the phone a root it first because unlocking it will wipe the phone clean of EVERYTHING. So get that done first and the rest is up to you stay stock or flash a rom.

Now that you have Android 4.0 you'll most likely fall in love with the Holo design guidelines. A list of some of the apps that use these guidelines can be found here and some good looking apps in general can here.
If you plan on rooting your phone or think you might want to in the future Unlock the bootloader, if you don't you will regret it, trust me. As for the battery life, I can get through the whole day with no problems while others complain that the battery life is bad, I suggest that you use the phone for a week before you get an extended battery.
There's a forum about the yellow screen issue here if you experience this at all then send it back as soon as possible despite the desire to play with your brand new toy.

If you like miui and don't want to root. Miui launcher is now available as an apk. That's one of the first things I installed when I got mine. The stock launcher is pretty good too.

try ur phone with everything stock for a few days, see if everything works, no reboots, overheating etc etc (might want to check if u got an OTA update though, coz there's a big difference for example between 4.0.1 and 4.0.4 in terms of stability)... if u're satisfied with stock , there is no need to root then , if u want to play around a lil u'll figure what to do urself.
p.s. i also owned a desire, but went through some devices in the middle before the gnex, nways, the desire can't be even mentioned in the same sentence with what u're getting now. welcome aboard

First things to do:
1) Unlock your bootloader, even if you never plan on rooting or flashing a custom ROM. Do this even before booting Android for the first time.
2) Check to see if you are running yakju or takju. If you are running a build other than those two (for GSM devices), flash one of them (by following the link in my signature). Run one of those two builds for a while, so that you get a feel for what a stock ROM is.
3) Everything else.

Keep it stock for at least a week, get to know the phone. Saves having to post about problems you're having on a custom rom just to find out its not the roms fault. This will also allow you to give real feedback when comparing roms as a opposed to these douches who flashed on day one n insist that rom x is better than stock

put it this way though......i dont own any apple products
can anyone point me to the best guide for rooting, and installing custom Roms?
also can anyone link me to a list of custom roms for the gnex, that are either finished or in development?
im just asking for the links because im very sure the question 'how do you root' has been asked a hundred times - i could google it - but i presume you guys will immediately know a link to the best and safest guide.

You can always flash back to stock.

a week of stock? i don't last more than 3 hours, and that's if i'm trying to really be patient. within an hour of getting mine i had flashed the radios, bootloader, rom, and the kernel.

How do you even know what stock ICS is if you only use it for 3 hours?

I just got my GN directly from Google and didn't do any unlocking of any sort. Just turned it on and added some apps I plan on using. Changed my homescreen and other screens/settings to fit my personal use and etc.
The phone is amazing without the need of unlocking.
Not really sure... the phone is already unlocked -.- (SIM wise)

Do you understand what unlocking means? We are talking about unlocking the bootloader. Unlocking the bootloader does NOT mean that you are changing anything related to the ROM. I does NOT mean that you are "rooting", and it does not mean you are planning to use a custom ROM.
All it means is that it gives you the ability to use fastboot commands. With this ability, you may be able to save some data off your device in case something happens and your devices' OS crashes. There have been a few reports on these forums of users who kept their bootloaders locked, then something happened and they couldn't boot their device. If their bootloaders had been unlocked, they could have at least saved their personal files (photos, music, etc) from the /sdcard directory. But, because their bootloaders were locked, too bad so sad, photos gone (they were not auto-backup to the cloud).

Definitely unlock the bootloader - I learned the hard way on my N1 that getting an 'unlocked phone' is different from having a phone with an unlocked bootloader. (hunting down a bootloader locked root method so I can Titanium Backup 2 years of apps and data is a PIA).
Unlocking the bootloader on a brand new phone will not outwardly do anything to your phone other than add a little unlocked padlock to the bottom of your startup screen (the one with Google written on it).
I did 2 weeks ago what you're talking about doing now. It's super easy with the Galaxy Nexus Toolkit that mskip has created.

[EDIT] P.S. - don't worry about losing warranty when unlocking the bootloader - the above GNex Toolkit can get your phone back to stock and then re-lock the bootloader for you if you ever need to use the warranty.

[Q] To root or not to root that is the Question

I am seriously agonizing over whether or not to root my HOX, I have had a desire and rooted and flashed it to within an inch of its life and never had an issue, and its still going strong and running Shaky153's new ICS Sense rom.
My only concern is that I am unsure whether the HOX is as technically or physically robust as the Desire, and I keep getting the impression that it could breakdown at anytime, I'm not too bothered about physical damage as the phone is insured, but if it has to be returned to HTC I'm F*!£^%.
Please someone help me make this decision, should I root, if so why?

Its totally up to you mate, but I will say that I had my HOX rooted a couple hours after purchasing it! And I love it!!

your decision mate...or wait for S-OFF..if you have a solid handset and no defects or issues with software then i would unlock it as by rooting this bad boy is the whole point of getting this phone. just do not forget about the bad stuff like voiding warranty though there is a couple of threads regarding this issue in the general section have a read through before unlocking...

I would wait for s-off. I'm not going to fiddle with mine until that is achieved. In the meantime, my desire will handle my flash addiction .

You do know that it voids warranty, right ??
If you just got it, then wait at least a week, test everything properly and make sure there aren't any hardware faults/manufacturing defects.

I have always rooted my devices after few hours of purchases. Except this one x. I actually cant wait to try custom roms and use root apps like i always do but sense 4 is beautiful and enough to keep me away from modifying it. So i think, i can wait for s-off. Plus, hearing the defects here and there, it would actually worth it to wait. I only have this device for 5 days so nothing to be rushed.

It's totally up to you but I would root just for some root apps (completely remove system apps, etc.). You should always be able to unroot.

I'm starting to have withdrawals.....lol. My head is just going... I need to flash, I need to flash, and it's really getting hard not to be tempted and wait for S-OFF.

I wasn't planning to root but I'm tempted to now just for the sake of 2 things, the 3dot menu remover patch and the font changer.

hahaha. same here. I'm still new to the flashing rom even using android phones (Coming from iOS) and yet i took the risk of rooting it and applying custom roms. ARHD is the best!!!

Should i root or not

Proud new owner of HOX was using GS3 before and HATED every moment of using that piece of crap! So far im in love with my HOX but since im running stock ICS i do suffer some performance issues time to time, So therefor i need your opinion should i root my one x and install custom JB rom or should i wait for the official OTA from htc, My main reason for rooting is like a said to flash JB other than that i can live without rooting my one x so should i root or wait for the OTA.

Use your phone for a while first, there have been a couple of issues that have turned up a little while into ownership so best ensure you don't have them first.
Then, once your happy you won't have issues, it's up to you whether to root or not, personally I always root for better control and backup ability.

Could you elaborate more into what kind of issues?

jb ota is right around the corner if your phone is not branded...
just wait till you get it and decide after if you still feel the need to root.

Will the gaming performance improve with jb cuz rite now when i play gta 3 it lags like crazy! i cant even imagine playing gta vice city which should be coming out in few weeks.

if it comes better optimized its smoother, but yeah rooting it will give a better performance and battery savings

Don't root your phone it will void warranty with htc ,wait at least a couple of months to see if any of the hox issues that may or may not shows up ( WiFi ,screen issues.hotness) on your phone

Not just yet, wait to see if another root method comes that won't void warranty or at least until your phone settles in n you know it has no problems, mine after 2 months speaker gave up and headphone jack stopped working so had to send it off was so pleased I hadn't voided my warranty

If you like gaming you must root as there is a gaming boost app made by hamdir and mwilky that improve the gaming a lot and there are kernel with oc GPU that help but sadly these are just for a ICS.

^^^ Not necessarily true, a lot of the time HTC repair center's will turn a blind eye to the phone if it's rooted as a lot of users have verified now, read the threads.

@ OP- I'd stay stock for a while mate, as said here before, OTA's are just around the corner, if, after that you still feel curious just root it and install ARHD, that way you'll still have the stock experience and it won't be too much of a culture shock for you.
AND Then if you still feel curious flash customer kernels and mods etc...

Do non-sense roms have the same aggressive memory management that the stock rom has? I'm going to wait for the JB update, but if it still kills apps quickly like stock ICS does, I might go with a custom ROM.
It's REALLY annoying when I open a 3rd (gasp!) app, and when I pop back to the first, it has to completely reload. Mostly annoying when that app is a browser page.

That'll always happen with multitasking, HTC muffed up the multitasking so it isn't what I'd call 'true' multitasking. It'll mostly need to reload the app.
I think Hamdir wrote a good thread on how to counter that with some script changes, try asking him?
I don't think the aggressive memory management is down to HTC Sense per se I think it's an Android thing? Again that'd need verification.

Root can be handy to have. The most obvious use is backup, if you want to make sure your app data (for those apps that still insist on using phone storage for data/savegames) and settings are covered. But I've personally had a few "needs root" things pop up now.
It's worth at least unlocking the bootloader sooner rather than later in case you ever do decide you want root, because when you do the unlock it wipes your phone. Better to go through re-setting it up early rather than having to wipe it later when you have loads of stuff on it.
On the other hand it voids warranty, and they can tell even if you re-lock the device as it will permanently say "re-locked". If you have a hardware fault you can probably pull some sort of consumer protection law thing on them, but you need to be aware that they'll probably fight it tooth and nail and claim that your warranty is "Void. Period." People's experiences are well documented in the warranty thread.
My approach was to wait a month and not get too settled-in with my data/apps/etc during that month. A really high percentage of hardware faults with any device or machine show up within the first month* so after that I felt comfortable enough to take the plunge.
* (The month thing is known as the breaking-in period... I work for an electronics manufacturer and one thing they offer is doing the break-in testing in-house before even shipping to the customer. At a fairly high price of course)

- to delete all crappy applications (stock, soundhound, carriers app...)
- to be able to install some cleaning app which needs root (game cheats, ad cleaners ...)
- to change Roms and find the one I need (in fact I change every week )
- many, many others usefull things...
By the way, i already return old phones to sellers, they were repaired, even with unlocked bootloaders & root. Maybe I was lucky

I totally agree with you. I just hate those crappy apps. It's like buying a notebook full of bloatware and not being able to remove it! I'm sure that is not cool LOL. Besides that, I think Titanium Backup Pro is a must, and it only works on rooted phones.

Yes, Titanium Backup is The Must.
My Favorites are, as said below, Titanium (pro) , Nova Launcher (with root), Lucky Patcher, and of course Adfree.
Usually, as soon as I get a new phone (having 3 now : DHD, Sensation, One X... Nexus 4 coming) or Tablet (Xoom wifi MZ604, Nexus 7) , I root it after having unlocked it.
I can't stand having some lags & freez screens on devices.
So should you root ?
Maybe you should see with some friends of yours or some relatives that owns some rooted HOX. Of course, before unlocking and footing your device, make sure your device is working good, have no problems.

New HTC one x user

Hello all.
I am a new, inexperienced one x user. Coming from the land of the captivate, I'm a little disheartened that towards the end, I ended up destroying my internal memory (EU bug for those of you that are familiar). SO, I've lost my development chops and was hoping to get some insight!
First off, is there a way to root this phone and then go back to stock leaving no trace of rooting in the first place? This is useful for warranty purposes.
Secondly, what's a good from to start out with? I was forced to live cm10 on my borked captivate, so its left a sour taste in my mouth to say the least. What a nice stockish, optimized sense rom? I am doing some looking around myself, but it'd be nice to get a starting point.

2. There's no way to root and not leave any trace. Rooting requires bootloader unlock. On stock, it's written in hboot LOCKED. When unlocked, it will show UNLOCKED. Now, even if you relock your bootloader, it will never go back to LOCKED, and instead RE-LOCKED .
3. There are TONS of Sense custom ROMS .
