I've been having this issue for a few weeks now and it's only seemingly getting worse. HOWEVER.. I think I have an idea of what may be going on.
Can a bad USB cable cause this issue? Maybe some kind of static electricity build up or something. If anyone else out there has this issue can you weigh in? Are you using any damaged or 3rd party cables? My problems started around teh time i orderd a (samsung) micro usb cable for use in my car with a cig lighter power converter thingy that has a usb port on it.
to test I wiped the battery stats in CWM and it actually seemed to help.. until last night when I used the new cable in the car again and it went haywire. I wiped the battery again and ill avoid using the new cable to see if it helps any..
I happened to catch it on video last night so I'll post a link up later. I'd like to get to the bottom of this since sprint wants to charge me to replace the device -___- .
I dont see anything in there about what the actual random "problem" is. only problem I have with my menu button is that my "phone" icon is right above it and with my case on the phone it makes it harder for my fat thumb to just hit menu and I sometimes launch the dialer...
so uhhh.. what's the "problem?"
The menu key will randomly activate without me actually touching the screen. Like I said, I have it on video and I'll post it as soon as I get home so everyone can share thoughts on it.
it's exactly what it sounds like. I'll be using the device, sometimes just reading and sometimes not even holding the device at all (as demonstrated in the vid) and the menu key will activate rapidly and very randomly.

Here's the video as promised. Taken last night. It happened today as well even after flashing the lastest stock ek13.

Well, the Video is down. Id like to see if its the same problem as I have.
I believe It may be. Its quite annoying. The Menu Button just activates. I always assume that its just Oily or dirty, something is making it do it. But even after a wipe it does it and Only with the Menu Key. Not Home, Back, or Search. I also use the Matte Black back TPU case, no difference on or off. Cant find a Rhyme or reason.
Edit:
For the record, im also on FC24.
haven't seen the video but I noticed during LOS testing when the phone came out that I got random menu pop ups in low signal areas.

Amusing, it did it when I hit "post reply".
I get it off and on, be damned if I can figure out how to replicate. Just does it.
I was starting to think it was my screen protector, since it started around that time. Happens plugged in and unplugged. Can go days without, then it just happens. I do know it only started for me when I flashed ICS.
Have you tried reflashing and seeing if the problem still exists. Last week my phone was randomly doing stuff like that. I did a full wipe and reflashed and everything has been fine since.
I've flashed several ROMs and have had it.
I can say I have had it only on ICS, some more than others. Never tracked it closely, but have had it on the homescreen, browser. Only 2 times since Fd02.
Wish I knew how to make it happen. I will say signal/battery levels have no effect.
its likely there's a short or something. I would take it into sprint. There's no reason not to. If they can't fix it you'll get a new phone.

Here's what's worked for me on ALL Android phones that have had this problem, go to your custom recovery, and clear cache and dalvik cache and reboot... Your phone will take a few minutes to boot...

I just got a refurb because of a blue led of death and mine is doing this as well. I've tried ICS roms, stock EL29, and even did a complete factory reset after flashing back to stock EL29 to no avail. It mainly occurs while I'm on a call or texting. It's driving me nuts and if it continues it's going back to Sprint.
I have been testing a theory relates to this.
Last night it was pretty bad, so I turned the setting for the hard buttons lights to "always off".
Hasn't happened since.
Only reason I tried this is that I noticed they came on right before the menu went nuts.
As I've said before, I don't think mine is a short since I NEVER had this occur when on gingerbread. Others may be, but I'm nearly certain mine is not.
If anyone else can try this to see if it does help, would be nice to see.

Good idea. I'll try the always on setting and see if that helps as well, that way we'll cover both ways.
Doesn't work. Had it come back k last night.
Not sure what to try.
Mine did it a few times yesterday and I noticed when it did either the gps was trying to connect or it was trying to connect to wifi or 3g. Maybe a coincidence or not, who knows, but it's something else to look at.
My phone did the same thing, it isn't the USB cable nor the screen protector. Its a bug when signal drops below a certain level. However, I believe its a touchwiz issue as I have yet to have it happen on any AOSP rom, input anyone?

I always had a problem with my menu button going off at random. So if anyone else has this problem here is a fix. U will need to open up ur phone and thanks to Samsung with out any void stickers. after removing the screws the bezel around the screen is just held in by clips. So you be left with glass and the board. Clean around the rim of the glass should have little dirt build up on the rubber sealant. Also I booted up with out the flex cable( linked to the touch button) connected and once booted up reinstall every thing and it work no more random menu pop ups
Sent from my SPH-D710 using XDA
Good info. But i thought it was caused when in low signal areas. Actually, i got my replacement refurb phone a couple months ago and it never had that menu problem until a week ago. So the dirt thing is possible
I just got this phone last week (used) and it has done it constantly when in low signal areas, like my job. However i put it on wifi at work Friday and it stopped. So i think it is related to poor 3g signal. Just my thoughts based on my experience.

menu button
I had the same problem on a brand new phone. It was 1 month old. It had it happen to will on wifi or will I
had full bars. I think the dirt problem is more the problem. I work in a shop with alot of dirt on the air.
Thanks for the info. I will know what to do if it happens on my refer phone.
if its a dirt issue why the need to reinstall software?
I cleaned my phone yesterday. Bought it from a chick that wore a lot of make up so it was pretty dirty. And so far no menu button misfires. May in fact be the dirt issue. Odd that it was really only going off during weak 3g signal times.
WOW, universal problem
I have been experiencing this on my new device for some time now. I thought I was alone but apparently others have it to then. Mine will go haywire all of a sudden to the point where the menu pops up and disappears up to 20 times by itself leaving the phone unusable and making the other haptic buttons non functioning. Usually requires quickly turning off the screen and popping back on. Drives me absolutely nuts to the point that I de-rooted and went back to absolute bone stock only to still have it happening.
Has to be dirt related. I thought maybe there was some voltage or heat problem that was causing it to fire. Has anyone had any luck fixing it without tearing the phone apart?
I want to smash this phone in low signal areas!! My NS4G gets better signal than this does in bad 3g areas. In California where I had full bar 4g this phone was perfection but once I got on the east coast (especially spots in NYC) I get so damn frustrated!!
I sure wish it was dirt causing it but I got it when my phone was new when I was LOS testing in dead spots the first month I had the phone
Sent from my SPH-D710 using Xparent ICS Tapatalk 2
Mine has been doing it since I got it. It is a refurb though as I bricked 2. The 2 previous phones didn't have the issue and it only does it when switching from 3g/4g to wifi or vice versa, or while switching data back on after a call. In my case it's definitely not dirt.

I have this same issue with mine and will be trying this when i get some time. It's very random and very annoying.
have had this happen on 2 phones, finally on my 3rd replacement last week and it has been good so far....
This keeps happening to my phone, only most of the time it's the search button. Low-signal areas mostly, connecting to wifi stops it completely. I think it may have to do with using non-samsung chargers/cables.
Mine alternates form the menu button to the search button. Both equally annoying... I must have some special dirt in my phone

I notice it more in low-light situations than I do in low-signal situations. When I'm connected to WiFi, I don't see any lessening of the phantom menu button.
U guys could also try the second part which is to boot up without touch button connected then when booted connect it back via flex cable on the bottom... good luck
BTW opening ur phone isn't so bad no void stickers and after screws are just clips

Damn guys I thought I was alone with this problem! I swear, I don't care how great the S3 is. If it has the same behavior its getting returned immediately. My GNex doesn't though so that's a good sign. I wonder if we could add menu buttons to the screen and disable soft keys and maybe it would get rid of this behavior. I have to see if a dev can make that happen

Well, I'm gonna have to edit my comment from earlier in the thread. After about breaking mine in half and throwing it out the window yesterday, I decided to try taking it apart and looking around. I didn't see any dust, but once I reassembled it, the problem has not returned. It usually does it immediately when it reboots and continues until it has acquired a signal. I've tried my best to get it to go crazy and so far so good. Those having the problem may want to give it a try and see if it helps.
My brother in law who is rooted on Blue Kuban, My Sister in law who is completely stock EL29 and my self also rooted on Blue Kuban all experince this problem. we all have launch day phones. def seems to happen more for us in low signal areas. so annoying. for those that took the phone apart is there any chance of dust getting in and being seen or is it no big deal?
thanks
Hola, noob here with a problem.
My rogers captivate glide was behaving perfectly fine one night when I decided to download some large files over wifi. It was also plugged in for charging and I was using some app (forgot the name) to prevent my screen from turning off so I won't lose my wifi connection. I left it like that and went to sleep. Upon waking up, my phone was hotttt , the screen still on but it has faded into a greenish color with scan lines. It was unresponsive and I had to pull the battery. Ever since then, my phone would last no more than a few minutes before freezing and fading into scan lines. I thought it was a battery issue, so I got new batteries but that didn't help one bit. I even flashed the kernel and still no help. I did resets, recovery, wiped caches, took out sd card and sims, stock builts. Nothing worked. I can't connect the phone to the computer or wall charger either. The screen would instantly freeze and fades out upon plugging in the micro usb cord.
Have anyone had similar problems? Did I fried the soc? I don't think it's a problem with the screen since it was perfectly responsive the few minutes it worked. This noob needs helppp.
I've posted a video on youtube but I couldn't link to it, but if you search "captivate glide problem" you'll see a video showing the freezing problem I have. I'm from the US also, so I don't know if I could get samsung to fix it through warranty since the phone is Canadian.
Well I downloaded Modern Combat 3 and that was like about 1Gb and the screen turn off because I didn't touch it while it downloaded, and wifi kept going so I'm not sure why it didn't stay on for you

Idk about the phone so much , but i am computer technician and it sounds like you overheated it, what we might call "burned it up".
The screen symptoms you have described are a dead giveaway, especially the lines
If this was a laptop, I would be sending it off for a reflow .
Typically, the circuit board gets so hot, the solder on the ships melts enough for a tiny bit of separation. This requires a "reflow ", where specialized equipment is used to repair the solder connections.
First, you should to a factory reset , then try to do a warranty claim. (unless u have insurance from your cellular provider, then u might check with that)
*edit, sorry, I missed the warranty part the first time I read ur post*
The next option would be to check with the guys at www.mylaptopisbroke.com
Email them, ask if they concur with my diagnosis and if they can help.
I have been dealing with them for about two years and always been highly satisfied. (They are in NY, I am in TN. I have sent literally dozens of devices to them)
If none of those 3 options work out for you, start looking for a new phone.
Sorry :-/

Sorry, but I agree with the previous poster, sounds like a hardware issue. Start the warranty process, can't know if it's gonna work til you try it.
Not to try to close the barn door after the horses have bolted, but in case you get into a similar situation with your new phone, there's an easier and safer way. When you're in the WiFi screen hit the menu button and under advanced settings there is the option to keep WiFi on during sleep. Also, as you have found out, be careful with any apps that directly control the hardware.
Had a very similar scenario as the OP described. Went to bed with it plugged in and streaming DI FM in high quality, woke up in the middle of the night by burning myself on the metal back plate. Unplugged it and pulled the battery, when I woke up in the morning after a rather worrisome night sleep I discovered my WIFI would not work unless I was within a foot of the router otherwise it wouldn't get any signal. I assumed the devices internals were damaged and that is what caused the problem, glad to know someone else aside from me has had a similar issue. Best bet would be trying to get a replacement through the warranty unless you have some type of protection plan through your carrier.
I see, thanks guys for the inputs. I had a feeling it's a goner. I can't do the warranty since it's rogers and I'm from the U.S.; bought it off Newegg unlocked without a warranty. So I guess I'm screwed.
Had the same thing happened to me. Had to send it to sammy to get fixed the had to replace the whole board

I've contacted mylaptopisbroke and they told me that phone repairs have been discontinued until midwinter 2013.
Is there anywhere I could buy a new soc??
Try mobiletechvideos.com or phonedoctors.com
I've heard of reflowing oneself by putting it in the oven at 550 degrees for 10 minutes or something. FWIW.
Not sure I'd want to do it myself, not having better information, but perhaps there's something out there some googling will reveal.
I've look at the sites, no captivate glide stuff. Guess captivate glide is not that popular a model. I've read about reflowing, but too chicken to try. I did took took the phone apart but saw that the LED is on the board itself and couldn't be detached; it's housed in some soft rubber feely box. I had a feeling it would melt in the oven.

What have you done with this?
Have you turned it on recently and found it still works?
I have a similar problem and other threads have suggested it's a software problem that might be fixed by installing a new ROM via odin
I have searched the entire forum for the similar problem i am facing but couldn't find any and had to write to you in private.
I have bought my device 3-4 months ago from Bangladesh and cant claim any warranty or replacement. My device screen is flickering more often day by day at the bottom right corner. Its like a screen shot of the top or any other portion of the tab that is flickering at the bottom right corner. I tried the brightness issue, didn't work. Then I factory reset my device thought might be a bug but still no luck. Now i am worried whether this is a hardware problem or not. But i never dropped the device. So shouldn't be one.
I recorded the problem with my mobile to be more precise. Video attached herewith in zip file.
I would be really grateful if anyone can help me out with a solution.
Thanks.

It seems like your CPU/GPU is burning out... I had the same problem when over clocking my old Galaxy Ace..
The problem may not be the same, but its all I can think of.
EDIT: it could possibly be because the ribbon cable that connects the Screen to the MoBo is loose?

If the ribbon cable is loose, power off you device and pull the back cover off and have a look.
If the CPU/GPU is burning out, the only thing I would suggest would be a moderate under clock of both units and pray that your device will last, alternatively, throw your device at a wall to preemptively break it before they do die and your device becomes a really crappy decorative ornament.
Seeing as you cannot get a replacement, your only option is to try and keep it from happening by any means.. It is only a matter of time.
OR,
I'm wrong.

Last night i showed my device to a professional and as this device is not much available in Bangladesh, they are not expert enough. Though he suspected it might be the cable issue but he cant be sure. He might get it right if he gets another same device to test. So m left with very few options :crying:. I got to wait for the parts to be available or i got to contact the Asus product importers but fingers crossed. Disappointing...its just a couple of months and lot of money for me.
Anyway...thanks for all the help and support. Appreciate it.

I face the same issue on my nexus 7(2013). Is there any solution to this?

I have this issue as well. Got a 16GB 2013 model free that had a shattered digitizer. Replaced the screen and for about 24 hours it seemed fine (only a little use). As I began to check it out and use it I started getting this odd flicking glitch on the bottom right of the screen, right edge to about 3/4 or 4/5 to the left. over time the amount of time the glitching occurs has gotten longer, and after re-seating all of the cables (they're in good and straight) it's pretty much constant now.
same here. i haven't even overclocked my tablet i might have to open my device up some time...
Has anyone noticed any hardware defects with their models yet?
my raising volume button seems to get stuck pretty often, like maybe 30% of the time. That is, it fails to raise the device volume. The button to lower volume seems to work fine though
Wow, do I gave the only defect?... Does anyone know the replacement process / policy if I didn't purchase the sprint protection plan?
Haven't noticed a single thing - everything running absolutely perfect and definitely haven't had that volume issue.
I'm not sure what you do if you didn't get insurance but if it is an actual manufacturing defect I'm pretty sure you can go through Samsung themselves. (I've only ever used Asurion or Squaretrade myself never through the actual manufacturer)

Darn, that's slightly frustrating.. I was so excited and happy for this phone, even this lemon is so difficult to part with ;P
Beautiful device though, Samsung really hit it out of the park this time!
I am having an issue with my Wi-Fi. It will not stay connected. I have to reboot the phone just to get it to come on. Then when it comes on it will not stay on if I am not using the phone. Other than that it works fine.
If I charge the phone for an extended period of time, it will not wake. I have to perform a battery pull to restart it. I have tried with the quick charge settings on and off, and I have tried with the included Samsung charger and a Palm charger. I'll probably take it back to Sprint for a replacement.

Just a reminder. Do a *#0*# test on your phone before walking out the door. That won't catch every defect, but it will catch quite a few.

Dialing *#0*# on ant Samsung phone puts the phone into self-test mode. You can test almost every sensor, button, and speaker on the phone. It's fantastic for testing the AMOLED screen too. The only thing I don't think it tests are the microphones.
My white one has a bum barometer sensor. It reports a value, but it's stuck at 29.870 in Hg. Doesn't budge at all from that value. Best buy is going to exchange or when they get more in stock. Other than that, no gap, no issues whatsoever.
