Why dont you disable your 3g,activate wifi hotspot and connect the laptop to it....amounts same...
ad-hoc
ip link set eth0 down
iwconfig eth0 mode ad-hoc
iwconfig eth0 channel 4
iwconfig eth0 essid 'name'
iwconfig eth0 key 1234567890
ip link set eth0 up
next line unsure of
dhcpcd eth0
this gets the phone to be seen as an ad-hoc network but i can't get a ip from it.

you should check the wireless key in your router or access point.
Try to install wifi key recovery from market . It requires root access . It might restore or give you the wifi password stored on your mobile .

Bro..first question..is it ur WIFI router's key that u forgot or the WIFI hotspot key on ur phone?
If it is for the router..then u r asking the question at the wrong place..still the solution(if you're using Windows 7) would be as follows:
Click on the Wifi icon on the bottom right of ur screen
Right click on your wireless network>>select "Properties"
Goto "Security">>Check(Put a tick) the "Show Characters" option
It should show u the password.
If it is the WIFI hotspot key..then changing it is simple..go to settings>>wireless and networks>>portable wifi hotspot settings>>and change the key/password over there..
Click the "Thanks" button if I helped you out..
most likely you will not be able to get the wifi key back. try going onto a laptop or other device that already is connected to the wifi point and try and see the password.
Go to with root explorer
/data/misc/wifi/
And open
wpa_supplicant.conf
That's where all your wifi network passwords get saved to

Above this quote
Connect to the router using an ethernet cable with a PC/laptop and you can check the WiFi settings as you don't need a network key for an ethernet connection.
Check your network connection for default gateway, it'll be something like 192.168.1.254 and if you changed the WiFi key before you should be alreet from that point!
how to root
i had download but how to root???
Confused.
If you lost your wifi password, go to your router config using your PC and a web browser (if you don't know how to do this, step away from your computer and never return!) and find out from there.
If you just can't remember it, but you know its on your phone, pull the wpa_supplicant file from your phone and open it in a text editor on your PC. There is your password.

Your tool is amazing... only one that actually works for rooting, recovery flashing, password recovery, etc. I hope that you keep improving it.
So from what i can tell he doesnt know his router password he doesnt know how to configure his router. So dude what are you doing in this forum if you dont know how to configure a router ? You said you have galaxy tab and i would suggest to do eoghans method on it but considering what i've seen from your prev posts its probably not rooted. I dont wanna sound dickish but ppl cant help you if you dont help yourself. So make it easyer on yourself and call your IP or whatever and pay for their "professional" help.

Dude you are soooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo late. This thread should have been closed months ago.
I'e been trying to get reverse tether working on the our phones and i've tried a bunch of different apps on the market, and searched around but i cannot seem to get it working.
Has anyone have any luck on getting reverse tether working via or getting the S2 to connect to ad-hoc wifi networks?
take care
edit:
forgot to add that i'm running AOKP jellybean build 1 which i'd like to add is an awesome rom
What the hell is reverse tether?
Either you use your phone as a hotspot or your phone connects to a router.
there are software for the PC to make your PC / Laptop WiFi act as a relay, so you can get internet via your laptop WiFi hot spot

He's talking about having your phone plugged into your computer and getting the internet that your computer is using to function as the internet on your device.
my windows mobile phone did this by default. It's pretty handy when you only have an Ethernet device with no router.

I believe there was an app on the market which allowed this to happen.
But OP have you tried bridging your internet connection to your wireless card on your computer then creating an ad-hoc network and connecting your phone to that? If set up properly it should work. That is if your computer has wireless nic.

thanks for the replies.
I'm on a linux based computer so those windows programs will not work.
I've tried the ad hoc method however, the phone doesn't seem to see the ad hoc.
I've read in few places that android does not support connecting to ad hoc but then i've also read that aokp does support so i'm kinda confused

There is a tweak you have to do to get android to recognize the ad hoc network. I'll try to search for it.

I mean scan ad-hoc network hotspots
Like laptop or portable wifi hotspot in phones . If you try to scan or connect to them, the phone doesnt show them
It just scan for infrastructure access points.(like wifi modems or routers)

Hey guys, i got a question about the Wifi tethering on the Xperia S.
is it possible to show the connected devices via an app or with the system himself, when i have Wifi tethering on? i don't want to look everytime in the dnsmasq.leases file or what it calls.
Just password protect it with wpa2 and you should be more then secure

Good question.
WiFi is seen as off when WiFi tethering is enabled, so applications like Fing and WiFi Analyzer just see the WiFi interface as down.
You have to have 'conventional' WiFi disabled and WiFi thethering enabled, so this would only be a short term config under a controlled environment in most cases.
It's true WPA2 and a password does provide good basic security, but....
I have an old XPERIA X10i with a 64GB mircroSD card which could make a short to long term mobile NAS and in such an environment where many people are using your hotspot "NAS" for documents, music and/or videos access/streaming, knowing if someone is using it before disabling the service may be helpful.
So, I too, would be interested if there is an app that sees the tethered interface and the network connections using it.
I have done little reaserch and came up with this.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.overlook.android.fing&hl=en
try it

Interesting. How did you enable and view the tethered interface when Fing only monitors wlan0?
I didnt, i only search on google. Some guys were report they use this app for that action
I actually saw it on the Galaxy S3 which has tethering enabled and shows the connected devices. so i think it can be done if we port the tethering app from the galaxy s3 to the XS. after that it should work.. maybe.. =D
btw. i tested the app and it didn't work.. :/
Just curious, can you instal that app on second phone and conect to host, can you then look which devices are conected to it?
