Hey guys, i got a question about the Wifi tethering on the Xperia S.
is it possible to show the connected devices via an app or with the system himself, when i have Wifi tethering on? i don't want to look everytime in the dnsmasq.leases file or what it calls.
Just password protect it with wpa2 and you should be more then secure

Good question.
WiFi is seen as off when WiFi tethering is enabled, so applications like Fing and WiFi Analyzer just see the WiFi interface as down.
You have to have 'conventional' WiFi disabled and WiFi thethering enabled, so this would only be a short term config under a controlled environment in most cases.
It's true WPA2 and a password does provide good basic security, but....
I have an old XPERIA X10i with a 64GB mircroSD card which could make a short to long term mobile NAS and in such an environment where many people are using your hotspot "NAS" for documents, music and/or videos access/streaming, knowing if someone is using it before disabling the service may be helpful.
So, I too, would be interested if there is an app that sees the tethered interface and the network connections using it.
I have done little reaserch and came up with this.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.overlook.android.fing&hl=en
try it

Interesting. How did you enable and view the tethered interface when Fing only monitors wlan0?
I didnt, i only search on google. Some guys were report they use this app for that action
I actually saw it on the Galaxy S3 which has tethering enabled and shows the connected devices. so i think it can be done if we port the tethering app from the galaxy s3 to the XS. after that it should work.. maybe.. =D
btw. i tested the app and it didn't work.. :/
Just curious, can you instal that app on second phone and conect to host, can you then look which devices are conected to it?

I have read devices using wifi hotspots to gain connection to wifi only psvitas. But for some reason barnacles does not show up as an access point and open garden wifi tethering is left at always connecting. Does anyone know how to get around this?

why arent you using the native tethering? out of interest? could always try making it unprotected as this can fix about 2% of issues occasionally but try the native first

That would be so but cm7 doesn't have it for some reason. Only USB tether.

UPDATE: ok.. so i spent the last hour setting up my phone from cm7 to stockrom w/ doomkernel and it STILL does not work. the psvita can see my phone but cannot connect. I tried with and without encryption.
I am having the same issue. My Vita won't see Barnacle off my Xperia play, no matter any changes I have made to the settings. I am trying to find another wifi app to try but nothing so far works
Vita don't support adhoc hotspots barnacle only does adhoc same with iPhone but the built in one on stock rom works

have you tried http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/
i would use wifi_tether_v3_1-beta11.apk
Apologies for a super late response... thanks for the link but I already had that apk. Native works but Verizon blocks the usage of unauthorized tethering with the option to pay... cm7 actually makes good use of the APk because it doesnt have an apparent apk for wireless tethering. Psvita can be tethered to r800x using cm7.

Didn't notice a setting for mobile hotspots in the settings, sometimes it is nice to be able to create a quick wifi connection. Should there be a option or will I need an app?

You can try at&t smart wi-fi app if you are using ATT.
Are you talking about making your phone a wifi access point? Aka tethering? If so look at the other threads about ICS and tethering. If the wifi hotspots settings are missing its because you upgraded to ics from the at&t firmware. Other threads have info regarding it.
Sent from my Sony Xperia™ ion.
On the topic, if using the native tethering on ics, doesnt at&t charge you? I noticed that android wifi tether for root works so thats a way to avoid it.

Nope. Never been charged and never been contacted about it. That's the nice thing about using an international rom. No AT&T restrictions.

I'e been trying to get reverse tether working on the our phones and i've tried a bunch of different apps on the market, and searched around but i cannot seem to get it working.
Has anyone have any luck on getting reverse tether working via or getting the S2 to connect to ad-hoc wifi networks?
take care
edit:
forgot to add that i'm running AOKP jellybean build 1 which i'd like to add is an awesome rom
What the hell is reverse tether?
Either you use your phone as a hotspot or your phone connects to a router.
there are software for the PC to make your PC / Laptop WiFi act as a relay, so you can get internet via your laptop WiFi hot spot

He's talking about having your phone plugged into your computer and getting the internet that your computer is using to function as the internet on your device.
my windows mobile phone did this by default. It's pretty handy when you only have an Ethernet device with no router.

I believe there was an app on the market which allowed this to happen.
But OP have you tried bridging your internet connection to your wireless card on your computer then creating an ad-hoc network and connecting your phone to that? If set up properly it should work. That is if your computer has wireless nic.

thanks for the replies.
I'm on a linux based computer so those windows programs will not work.
I've tried the ad hoc method however, the phone doesn't seem to see the ad hoc.
I've read in few places that android does not support connecting to ad hoc but then i've also read that aokp does support so i'm kinda confused

There is a tweak you have to do to get android to recognize the ad hoc network. I'll try to search for it.

Stumbled upon this on mistake. But just search for "reverse tether" in market to get your app.

Hopefully someone can shed some light on this.
I used to use Barnacle on my old Photon, and had no issues with it. Now I'm running it on Lifeless ROM for our phones, and while it doesn't spit out any errors, it certainly isn't functioning the way it should.
Barnacle starts and runs perfectly, even shows " sharing your connection" with no errors at all, but still, no device is able to see or connect to the network. When searching for the Wi-Fi network on any other phone, laptop, etc, it's just not even there, like it doesn't exist.
If anyone is familiar with this app, or knows a way to get it functioning, I'd greatly appreciate any info.

how did you even get this on your phone? i just tried to download it and it says it isnt available on our carrier.
Look up WIFI Tether on google play, there will be one called "WiFi Tether for Root Users" made by "Müller, Lemons, Buxton"
I've been using it for a while no issues so far.

I've used this on my Optimus S Galaxy Nexus and Optimus G and they all work great. This is the best app for tethering. They even have older version to where a certain version works.

WiFi teether owns when you have 4g
yep just got wifi tether for root, barnacle didn't work, and this one i see actually supports WPA as opposed to being limited to WEP, which caused issues with my linux box connecting to it.
Hopefully this is fixed with WPA, we'll find out
WiFi Tether stopped working for me. It does what's described in the first post; runs fine, no errors, and says it's tethering. It worked for about a month and now nothing.

I took the advice and tried Wi-Fi tether from the market. Basically does exactly what barnacle did, with a slight change. Now, other devices will see and connect to the Wi-Fi network, but will still not get internet access. Almost like the data service was blocked.

I am staying at a hotel where
1. My mobile data plan doesn't work (another country)
2. I paid 30 to have one device (my note II) get internet
3. I learned that I cannot run hotspot and wifi at the same time
How can I share my internet with other devices? Can thos even be done?
Thanks

I dont think it's possible, but you could try using usb tethering or maybe Bluetooth tethering

Bluetooth tethering is a setting on the rom you are using. It cannot be enabled via app. Its been a while since I messed with my Bluetooth tethering but I can tell you it works very well. I don't have a link handy.
The main advantage is it is very low power. The connection is very seamless as well.

By rom, are you referring to a rooted phone? If so, I don't have a rooted phone. I guess I will consider this for my next trip.
Thanks
Q
If you get internet on your one device then your easiest option is to get internet on your laptop and then create a hotspot on your laptop.
If your laptop is running windows 7 then you can follow the instructions from here.
