reverse tether? - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-T989

I'e been trying to get reverse tether working on the our phones and i've tried a bunch of different apps on the market, and searched around but i cannot seem to get it working.
Has anyone have any luck on getting reverse tether working via or getting the S2 to connect to ad-hoc wifi networks?
take care
edit:
forgot to add that i'm running AOKP jellybean build 1 which i'd like to add is an awesome rom

What the hell is reverse tether?
Either you use your phone as a hotspot or your phone connects to a router.

there are software for the PC to make your PC / Laptop WiFi act as a relay, so you can get internet via your laptop WiFi hot spot

He's talking about having your phone plugged into your computer and getting the internet that your computer is using to function as the internet on your device.
my windows mobile phone did this by default. It's pretty handy when you only have an Ethernet device with no router.

I believe there was an app on the market which allowed this to happen.
But OP have you tried bridging your internet connection to your wireless card on your computer then creating an ad-hoc network and connecting your phone to that? If set up properly it should work. That is if your computer has wireless nic.

thanks for the replies.
I'm on a linux based computer so those windows programs will not work.
I've tried the ad hoc method however, the phone doesn't seem to see the ad hoc.
I've read in few places that android does not support connecting to ad hoc but then i've also read that aokp does support so i'm kinda confused

There is a tweak you have to do to get android to recognize the ad hoc network. I'll try to search for it.

Working wireless tether for root users?

Does anybody know what version of the Wireless Tether for root users works with the rooted stock ROM for the Inc2? Tried the latest 3.1 beta (3.1b6) but it doesn't work.
try this
http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/downloads/detail?name=wireless_tether_2_0_7.apk
Im using the 2.0.7 wireless tether and does not work on my dinc 2, im running tsm_gingerbangsense_2 this is the message. Cannot communicate with DNS server (#########) Network diagnostic pinged the remote host but did not receive a response.
In the network and sharing center i can see this (this computer-Android tether-----x-----)
works fantastic on inc2HD
I found that Open Garden app works just great.
Not being able to communicate with the dns server means your phone can't connect to the internet, so there is nothing to rebroadcast via wifi. are you within a good signal area for 3g, and does your data work in other apps?

Hi OP.
Enable mss clamping and routing fix in settings on the newest beta. You will be up and running in seconds.
I noticed that using power savers may disable tethering. Uninstall those as well.

I'm having the exact same problem. I've tried multiple tethering apps and none of them work and last time I tried using open garden it broke my 3G and I had to revert to a backup. I'm running MIUI 10.7.
This may be a dumb question, but can root users use the 3g hotspot found in wireless settings for free? Or do I need to download another app.

All depends on the ROM. If you're running the stock ROM but just rooted you'll need another app. Some ROM developers hack the built in app.

[Q] Does Evo 4g have a hotspot feature?

HI,
I just rooted and installed a new ROM on my phone but i dont see any program or feature that will allow me to use my hotspot feature for free. Can someone help me? or point me in the right direction.
Thanks,
If its a custom rom...go to settings then data and look for hot spot in those settings
Yes it does on sense roms u use the hotspot app on aosp roms u go to mobile networks in settings and use android AP or wifi hotspot, next time use the search feature u could have found your answer in about 2 seconds and after all search before u post is RULE#1 on XDA

Hey,
Yes it does sprint's evo was the first to offer 4g wireless tethering and it was a large selling point for the device when it first came out!
If you are rooted you will be able to use it for free the issue is sprint likes to block certain apps in the market so just go to 4shared.com and search for wifitether.apk or I like opengarden.apk and those will get you free tethering so you can get your tether on!! Root for the win!
I hope I helped if I did please hit the thanks button!

Wireless Tether app.
Ok I have been doing some searching and decided to piggy back on this post for my question. I am running decks rom with the hacked hotspot and I also have the tethering app. I mostly use the app because it tethers 4g and I live in a solid 4g area and life was good. I recently received an Acer iconia a500 tablet and for technical reasons beyond my level it does not read the tethering app as a network due to some adhoc or something close to that. So I'm forced to use the hacked hotspots. I would like to know if anyone knows of a rom whos hacked hotspot can tether 4g. Or if mine does...I just am not sure how to tell for sure. Temporary fix until I can root my tablet and allow it to read the tethering app. Thanks!

In wireless tether go in settings > setup mode > change it to auto in device setup just above it change it to generic or evo4g and try it that way I can connect anything to mine with those settings

First off thanks for all the suggestions.
Quick update : I downloaded a newer tether apk that had those options. I set them to where my tablet recognizes the network but now it just stays stuck on "obtaining IP" and doesn't connect. I tried restarting tablet, restarting phone, changing ssid, all I could think of. Even connecting to another network then trying to switch. Does not ever connect. I can still connect with the hacked hotspot so not the end of the world but would like to solve this.

I've had that problem a few times too try fixing permissions I'm recovery maybe called uid mismatches depending on your recovery you can also go into LAN settings and try different ips in wireless tether and adjust the broadcast frequency under another setting I can't think of the name but they are all in WT

This is the best I can do for you.

Also, check your security settings. Some devices will not see a wireless network with security settings it can't support.
Rarely, because it's an international thing, channel settings can also prevent discovery. Just something to think about. Not that it should be an issue but may want to double check.

Android has issues with ad hoc sometimes. Certain devices like the Kindle fire can only use infrastructure based wifi due to the chipset used and/or the drivers included. Infrastructure mode is a more robust and stable network vs ad hoc too. I get about an extra 20' in range on infrastructure vs ad hoc. On infrastructure I can cover my entire 3600 sqft house with 1 access point getting 2-3 bars at the farthest end of the house, with ad hoc the back side of my house gets very weak or no signal at all. If your router/hotspot is capable I'd recommend settinf it up in infrastructure mode with the same ssid and security key (if you use one) and go from there

You said your phone's reception sucks at work. I'm sure someone will chime in if I'm wrong. Are you trying to get better data connection or phone connection? If phone, piggybacking off a router or PC won't help you to make calls if you can't now, unless you're using some form of voip on the phone. The SMS and phone voice run on the same line (I think). If you put the phone into airplane mode, but turned on wifi, you wouldn't receive calls or text. You'd only be able to do data. You have to be on a sprint tower to use the phone part.
Also, if you want your phone to get on adhoc and you can't now, you need a modified wpa_supplicant file for this phone. I don't know how to mod the file but a simple file swap and reboot would do it. At least that's how I did it with my original sprint galaxy 7" tab.

Reception is fine, it's just that data speeds at work are painfully slow. If I have a lot of apps to update on my phone, would be nice to just piggy back into the work network and do it that way.
My research has indicated that I'll need a modified wpa_supplicant, like you said, and I've tried some that are floating out there but they all seem to bork my wifi and I haven't been able to locate one specifically for the E4GT. Also, I have no idea how to mod it myself lol

The app posted supports only ad-hoc connections according to the description.
I haven't seen any android versions that supported ad-hoc connections by default. You've always needed to replace wpa_supplicant to make ad-hoc networks visible to android wifi devices. Note that you can broadcast ad-hoc without changes. You just won't see ad-hoc networks without changes.

i really dont get it, what's the point of tether apps like PDAnet+ or Foxfi?
The default built-in tethering functions (wifi hotspot, usb tethering, OR bluetooth) work fine and free. am i missing something here..?
I am guessing they meant they are running the sharing app on another device (since they mentioned tmobile). So the tmo phone is sharing the tmo connection and nexus 7 is using that shared connection to access the net.

O really? is it because tmobile detects the built-in tethering and does not want to allow it? Because i'm with Rogers (canada) and i've been using the built-in bluetooth tethering (JB 4.2.2) of my cellphone data plan to my Wifi tablet (galaxy tab 2) for a long time now and it works all the time.

[Q] Wifi Tether - Show connected clients

Hey guys, i got a question about the Wifi tethering on the Xperia S.
is it possible to show the connected devices via an app or with the system himself, when i have Wifi tethering on? i don't want to look everytime in the dnsmasq.leases file or what it calls.
Just password protect it with wpa2 and you should be more then secure

Good question.
WiFi is seen as off when WiFi tethering is enabled, so applications like Fing and WiFi Analyzer just see the WiFi interface as down.
You have to have 'conventional' WiFi disabled and WiFi thethering enabled, so this would only be a short term config under a controlled environment in most cases.
It's true WPA2 and a password does provide good basic security, but....
I have an old XPERIA X10i with a 64GB mircroSD card which could make a short to long term mobile NAS and in such an environment where many people are using your hotspot "NAS" for documents, music and/or videos access/streaming, knowing if someone is using it before disabling the service may be helpful.
So, I too, would be interested if there is an app that sees the tethered interface and the network connections using it.
I have done little reaserch and came up with this.

Interesting. How did you enable and view the tethered interface when Fing only monitors wlan0?
I didnt, i only search on google. Some guys were report they use this app for that action
I actually saw it on the Galaxy S3 which has tethering enabled and shows the connected devices. so i think it can be done if we port the tethering app from the galaxy s3 to the XS. after that it should work.. maybe.. =D
btw. i tested the app and it didn't work.. :/
Just curious, can you instal that app on second phone and conect to host, can you then look which devices are conected to it?
