How would I flash a Kernal? I Want to flash Faux kernal with beastmod5
Sorry for the noob Question..
If you already have Beastmod installed (or any other custom ROM):
0. Download Faux' kernel and put it on your phone somewhere.
1. From the ROM, hold power and wait for the power-menu. Select reboot to recovery. Basically get into Clockwork recovery. Doesn't matter how.
2. Select "Install zip from sdcard"
3. Locate the kernel file
4. Select OK and wait for it to flash.
5. Reboot. It may take longer than usual for the first boot.
Don't forget to wipe Delvick and Cache before installing a new kernal..

Hi all.
can I please get some confirmation before I mess things up (again)?
I'm currently running on CM7 RC0. I'd like to upgrade to RC1v2. The procedure I think is:
1. Download Latest CM7 ROM and put on SD card.
2. Boot into Custom Recovery.
3. Install the CM7 zip file and then the google apps one.
4. Select "Wipe Cache" then go to Advanced and select "Wipe Dalvik Cache". Reboot.
Is this right, or do I need to go back to the start and reflash the sbf, root, etc etc?

That's unuseful, even more if you do it after installing cm7 + gapps !
I have upgraded to RC1 without wiping anything...
Of course, if you want to avoid doing some mess you'd better wiping cache + dalvik before installing the rom, but it's not really necessary.
oops. Yes I may have got that in the wrong order.
edited sorry
If you first wipe than update over zip you are on the save site

It's also good to do a 'Wipe battery stats', on Recovery->Custom Recovery->Advanced. Battery can get a little messed up upon upgrading.
Check out the FAQs thread by antony.ps, it is very good! -> http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1065798
The instructions for upgrading are in the item 3. They are still for CM7 RC0, but it is just a matter of substituting the files for the newest CM7 + gapps
thanks. I did the update this morning after finding section 3) in the FAQs - I'd looked there yesterday and completely missed them. Will now work on slowing down my scrolling speed so I don't miss important stuff again.
i just want someone to confirm my research. i am running 4.0.2 stock with root, fastboot, cwr, locked bootloader. plan to install aokp and franco
backup (though to be honest since i just got this phone i don't really have anything on it)
1. restart into fastboot
2. unlock bootloader from adb with 'fastboot oem unlock'
3. put rom and gapps zip into /sdcard/
4. restart into cwr
5. wipe cache/system/data/dalvik
6. 'Install zip from sdcard' > select rom/gapps/kernel files
7. reboot
Looks good to me. Good Luck!
If it doesn't boot try flashing just the rom and gapps and boot back in to android.
Then reboot back into CWM wipe cache and dalvik then flash the kernel.

Hi, can you please provide steps for doin' the same above thing using fastboot instead of cmw
before installing a new kernel always wipe dalvik its very important ... you will know you wiped dalvik properly when you boot next because you will get "android upgrading optimizing applications"
This thread is for people who are new to ICS

lol! so true.. and there are multiple ways to flash and not every rom requires to b flashed the same as other roms.. some recommend cslks format all and some have the wipes built into rom that wipe when u flash.. then theres aosp that requires you to also flash a gapps.. and you can flash from any rom ics or gb.. just mobile odin to el26cwm to flash away or use one of the newer safer ics recoveries or pc odin.. or the easiest way is to tell the noobs to read the install instructions for the rom they want to install

Sorry if this offends you OP but this thread takes away from XDA quality.
With a little research, reading the threads, and not blindly flashing, people will learn. We all did.
Oh, and there are stickies, wiki, etc already.

Locking this down as there are already wikis and stickies for this and it has become nothing more than a troll fest in here
A quick question when going from a custom ROM to another ROM do you do a "Wipe data/factory reset" & "Wipe cache partition" before flashing the kernel then flashing the ROM or do you do the exact same process as flashing a custom ROM and kernel from stock?
well i did not understand your questiion fuully. however, let me explain the process to you.
!) download the rom and paste it into your sd card.
2)now, flash the appropriate kernel provided with the rom.
3)now the custom kernel will have cwm recovery installed in it bydefault
4)u need to enter cwm recovery using the voloume keys while the phone is booting
5)once entered, u need to 'wipe data/factory reset' and then, 'wipe catch partition', and then 'wipe dalvic cache'
6)now go to'install zip from recovery'
7)choose your rom and install it.
note: however, i suggest you to make a nandroid backup of your current rom so that incase if anything goes wrong, you can always restore your phone.
I just figured out my own question

What you do is read every word of the installation instructions of whatever it is you're trying to install.
I'm sorry.. i post this question because i want to know if i do something bad at installing Roms because i always had a bunch of issues, more than anyone reported in the Rom post..
I will post my way to install the Rom:
1. Install stock Rom with KDZ
2. Full Wipe/Format
3. Root
4. Unlock Bootloader
5. Copy Rom, Gapps and Kernel into SD
6. Go to Recovery and Wipe Dalvik/Cache
7. Install Rom
8. Wipe Dalvik/Cache
9. Reboot Recovery
10. Install Gapps
11. Wipe Dalvik/Cache
12. Reboot Recovery
13. Install Kernel
14. Wipe Dalvik/Cache
15. Boot as normal

I will try that tomorrow.. I hope it erases all my bugs..
One noob question... Full Wipe is Factory Reset?
Edit: Formated Everything except internal storage before install Rom, then.. something strange happened.. my backgroud menu was bugged.. like seeing another menu behind settings menu.. even in twrp i saw the original USB menu of stock..
Not just factory reset. A full wife is made in cwm recovery and it has 3 stages : factory wipe/data,wipe cache partition, wipe dalvik cache, format /system.

A full wipe doesn't mean format /system. If you format system after flashing a rom then there is no rom exists in your phone anymore. Performing a factory reset also clean cache partition too.
if you would've payed attention, he mentioned he made the wipes BEFORE flashing a custom rom. so, yes, it's recommended to perform a /system format.
