I'm suddenly having a problem with my Nokia Lumia 800. For some reason my PC is failing to install the Windows Phone 7 portable device driver. I get an "This device is not working properly because Windows cannot load the drivers required for this device. (Code 31)" error.
I've tried un-installing the drivers and reinstalling them but I still get the same problem? Any ideas? Thanks

Make sure that you have the automatic driver downloading from Windows Update turned on. You can turn it on in the "Installing device drivers" screen when you plug in a USB device.

No luck with that.
Uninstall the drivers for Windows Phone 7 and Windows Phone USB.
Restart the PC and then attach the phone.
Try to use a different USB port.
If that don't work then i'd suggest a new USB cable
I've tried a different USB cable that's working with another Nokia Lumia 800 in the office and still the same problem. I've tried different USB ports and I've also tried this USB Cable and Lumia on a different PC and it installed the drivers correctly and worked fine.
Is there any settings that I may have changed that could have casued the error code 31. The phone charges up fine from the USB port, what ever is causing the 31 error is the problem?

Try this:
Unplug your phone
Uninstall Drivers
Uninstall Zune
Reboot
Install Zune
Plug your phone
Tried that and I still have the same problem!

One of the most useless pieces of windows 7 "help" I've seen. I like the "help" it provides in diagnosing wifi errors. Priceless.
A quick google of the error showed me its a port problem on the phone.

WINDOWS TROUBLESHOOTING STEP-BY-STEP SOLUTION
(Step 0: Install zune)
e driver. To do this, follow these steps:
1. Click Start, right-click Computer, and then click Properties.
2. Click Device Manager, located in the left column.
3. A window will appear with the name of your computer and a list of files. If you don't see the files, click the name of your computer. The name of your Windows Phone should be listed under Portable Devices. If Windows Phone was incorrectly installed, it may be listed with a yellow exclamation mark . Or, it may be listed under Other Devices as a USB device or an unknown device.
4. On the Driver tab, click Uninstall.
5. Select Delete the driver software for this device and then click OK.
6. Return to the Device Manager window, click the Action menu, and then click Scan for hardware changes.
7. Open Portable Devices, double-click the name of your Windows Phone, and then click the Driver tab. Or, if you don't see your phone name, click unknown device listed under Other Devices, and then click the Driver tab.
8. Click Update Driver.
9. Click Browse my computer for driver software.
10. Click Browse, locate on the C drive the Program Files/Zune/Drivers folder, and then click OK.
11. Click Next and if you're prompted, click Install. You may only be given a Close option.
12. After the driver installation is complete, Close the open windows until you exit the Device Manager. If you're prompted to restart your computer, do so when you can.
(13. (In case of syncing problems) Go to Program Files/Zune and find Zune.exe, right click, select properties, then Compability, check run as administrator and hit ok. Run Zune a gain, and an admin prompt will appear)

I set the device to display all the non present device drivers and I uninstalled loads!! I had old HTC Android drivers, HTC HD2, Nokia Lumia and even Blackberry not that I've ever had a blackberry
I unistalled all the USB storage drivers for windows phones and android etc and also the USB Composite drivers. This is the closest I've got to getting it to work but it is still not working.
My Lumia was working fine on this PC until I downloaded the Nokia care suite. I'm wondering if I did something them but I can't remember?
EDIT: Nokia Care Suite is picking up my Nokia Lumia 800 when connected just not Zune?

Here is what happened:
Problem
Downloaded a new rom, _HTC_UNIVERSAL20270__WM6.1_WWE_Vanilla_Edition_by_luca16thebig.
So I took out the simcard and the sd card and ran the update utility, it crashes everytime;
giving me the error RUU has stopped working.
My phone on the other hand is now stuck in bootloader mode. So I do a few searches and download a utility to exit bootloader mode, UNI_ExitBootloader and I run it and it gives me the error cannot find USB device. Here I tried every USB slot and different cables to no avail. I guess its compatibility issues, so I go to properties and play around with the compatibility settings with no joy.
Solution
Downloaded Virtualbox and installed xp with activesync 4.5, enabled the USB in Virtualbox and disabled USB connections in activesync. I tried plugging my phone in and the UNI_ExitBootloader utility still gave me the same error. By chance I tried all the USB slots on my laptop and the ones at the back work, aparently the utility doesn't work with usb hubs and thats whats in the front of my laptop.
Another tip don't use any of the stripped down versions of xp like microXP etc, you need the xp cd to install activesync.
Just thought I'd share my experience, I think some people are having the same problem in Vista although correct me if i'm wrong.

I thought you did not have to install ActiveSync to upgrade ...
(ActiveSync is especially forced down by not using (listening!) the USB, so why install it anyhow? Then you might try a cut off XP version)

I was able to upgrade ROM (not once) from WinXP - VMWARE on Linux (FC 7).
Radio upgrade was failing any time. (I think, that it can work on other OS's too)
Is there any WinXP Live disk, that supporting ROM flashing?

as for me, i upgrade rom successfully under windows 7 build 7000 x64, exactly the same way as in vista, but if anybody is interested i can post it here.
Please help w/ W7
Hi. Can you detail how you achieved on W7?
a bit more detail
I am getting a failure of the RUU. Therefore, I am unable to continue and update the ROM. Thanks in advance for assisting w/W7.
I failed upgrading RadioROm too in my OSX 10.5.6 using VMWARE
I'm using VMWARE (ver 2.0.1) too, but for Mac OSX..
My Windows are XP 32 bit, and OSX running it is OSX 10.5.6..
I have flashed many, MANY ROM to my G3 Universal (Dopod ver) using my XP by VMWARE.. but i also noticed it always failed when flashing Radio ROM.. afterwards, i use my colleague's Laptop using XP 32 bit (the same OS i installed in my VMWARE) and it runs smooth as silk.. ;p
Also, not so long ago i tried flashing my o2 XDA2i using my VMWARE (upgrade all 3 ROM - including the Radio).. and what do you know.. it failed again..
i think the ROM upgrade utility / MA Upgrade utility has some crash with VMware's driver..
Too bad there aren't ROM upgrade utility for other OS besides M$..
such a shame, considering M$ are trying to shut our beloved forum not so long ago.. (they even still trying)

Well, for anybody is experiencing problems, here is a short but illustrated manual about flashing in windows 7.
1. Open your device manager and select Microsoft Usb Sync in Mobile Devices section:
2. Open its properties and go to Driver tab, then press Update Driver:
3. Choose the second option:
4. AGAIN choose the second option:
5. Click Have Disk button:
6. Select the folder with downloaded driver (the one for Windows 7 x32 and the one for Windows 7 x64):
7. You will get back to previous screen, then click Install, a warning appear, click Install anyway:
8. Wait while driver installs:
9. It will be successfully installed:
10. Now when you get back to driver properties, don't close the window and check driver version. If it changed from 2nd step (2003 instead of 2007), everything is ok:
When everything is complete, close this window, go to bootloader and flash your favourite rom
İnstall vista ruu driver.
It is not XP or VISTA
you know i have the same problem with this rom something is wrong, i tried in 3 different computers with XP with the same result as you, then i tried to flashed in another computer with VISTA, upgrading the driver sucessfully but the same result, so i return to COTULLA rom flashing in VISTA with no problems at all, conclusion it´s not XP or VISTA with all the respect maybe you should take a look to your rom LUCA (happends the same with diamond rom) it would great that you can fix it, thanks !

The method lt2p showed worked for me on Win 7 build 7100

Otherwise everything else is the same and it updated the rom without a hitch

- First of all you need to put your device in bootloader mode (press and hold power, light and softreset button)
- then connect the MDA to your computer.
- open computer management (devicemanager) and you will see "Microsoft USB Sync" as in first picture.
I did it and it's working on my Win 7 (Buils 7600)

I have no problem connecting my Epic 4G Touch to a WinXP system with adb.
On Win7 64, I installed Kies, but when I plug the phone in, I am told that no drivers for CDC Serial and SAMSUNG_Android were found. And "adb devices" finds nothing.
I can mount the device just fine for transferring files. But I need adb for software development.

Unless you're going to use it, I would uninstall KIES. Having it running in the background can mess up other functions like flashing with odin. I would just install the Samsung Drivers by themselves. It worked for my adb install in windows 7.

Uninstall all your drivers from device manager and start fresh. Only install the driver.exe from samsungs support page. Once that is installed plug your phone in and let it run through the drivers before you try anything else.
If your computer isn't recognizing your phone in the first place then it's not a problem with adb, its the drivers, so start there.
OK, so I uninstalled KIES and the drivers.
I then tried to install the drivers. No go: The installer continues to fail, with the progress bar at around 80-90%. I experimented with running the installer as administrator, installing off of \Program Files (x86) and off of \SAMSUNG, instead of the default \Program Files, and still no go.
I then re-installed KIES, turned off debug in the phone, and plugged it in. Win7 installed a driver for the phone and all was well.
I then unplugged the phone, turned on debug, and plugged it back it. Now Win7 installed the following drivers:
Code:
USB Composite Device
USB Mass Storage Device
Android UMS Composite USB Device (two of these!)
and said they're ready to use. But it also tried to install:
Code:
CDC Serial
SAMSUNG_Android
and it gave "Driver not found" for these.
And "adb devices" lists nothing.
To make sure adb works fine I then plugged in a Kindle Fire. Windows set up the drivers for it and it showed up in "adb devices" just fine.
I still can't get it working.
I even tried using the advice I saw on some blog to use the Device Manager, and then update the non-working devices by directing Windows to look in the "\Program Files (x86)\SAMSUNG\USB Drivers" directory for drivers. No effect--Windows says it can't find an appropriate driver there.
The 25_escape\ssudadb.inf file seems to contain stuff with hardware IDs that match the device that Windows can't find a driver for. BUT there is no x64 section in the inf file. Is there supposed to be one?
I even tried turning off Windows' driver signature checks. Didn't help.
Does anybody have this working 64-bit Win7?

Have it working - and did remember I have Kies installed.
Maybe I downloaded both the separate driver and Kies?
USB Driver Link:
http://org.downloadcenter.samsung.c...342248/Sprint_d710_USB_Driver_v1_3_2360_0.exe
Kies Link:
http://org.downloadcenter.samsung.c...0111012045653670/KiesPC_2.0.3.11082_152_4.exe
Know I have problem still with Kies... but I can use ODIN without issues.
Finally got it!
I can't really explain how I did it, as there was a lot of trial and error and I wasn't keeping notes. But the basic trick was to right click in device manager on the unknown SAMSUNG_Android device, choose Update Driver, choose "Let me pick", choose "Have disk", point to the "SAMSUNG\USB Drivers\25_escape" folder from the KIES installation, and then choose "Samsung Mobile USB Composite Device".
You may then get another unknown device, which using the same method you set to ADB. I did a bunch of stuff in different ways, trying to match different drivers from the 25_escape folder to different devices, until it finally worked.
Same issue, solved twice
I have had similar problems in win7 64bit twice now. I got it working once, then ended up reinstalling windows for other reasons. I then had the same problem when trying to install cm9alpha3.
Both times it took a strange combination of installing the drivers manually, plugging in the phone, etc. to get it working. The best advice I have for others is to keep trying.
Also, it seems that Kies almost never gets it right. I personally don't even keep it installed.
I posted a guide on how I got this working.
adb works, but I still can't connect to KIES.

Oops. I misunderstood the KIES error message to mean that I'm supposed to have the phone in adb mode for KIES to work. But actually adb mode needs to be off for KIES to work. Now it works fine.

6. Select "Android Composite ADB Interface Version" (latest one)
7. Ignore warning that Windows does not know if this driver is compatible.
At this point, I saw the "Trust this device" message come up on the Samsung phone
Thanks for the help. This was really killing me as I had tried everything including installing the official drivers from Samsung's site (developer.samsung.com/technical-doc/view.do?v=T000000117)
Note: I don't have Windows Kies installed and I am using Windows 7 x64 OS. Also note that this does not fix the "CDC Serial" error, however, this is not required for remote debugging over USB.

i'm on lollipop 5.0.1(maximus hd 11.0), s-off, rooted and upgraded my windows 8 to windows 8.1 x64(no usb 3 ports)
on windows 8 i had no problem, device would show up(MTP+ADB).
when i connect to windows 8.1 i will get connection sound, but my phone is not showing up.
i have uninstalled all HTC related drivers+software and reinstalled latest HTC sync from HTC site, device is not showing(even after reboot).
i tried the ADB DRIVER with signature check off, but still it does not show up.

You have to do it each time you want to use the drivers or Windows won't load them.
I have permanently disabled driver signing because of this crap. No more problems since.

No. Once the drivers are installed Windows will use them even with checking on as they've been cleared for use

If I get a chance I will, but the MTP drivers are taken from Windows Update as it's just seen as a media device. The HTC drivers only come into affect when you have Debugging turned on or if you're in the bootloader (from memory)

No. I'm sorry that is not always the case with all drivers, I know from exprerience. There are plenty of other documented cases of it happening on the internet.

Well, it IS the case for me. Every driver I've had to install with signature checking off has worked fine on next reboot (about 5 drivers at last count but I did recently reinstall Windows so might not have them all reloaded now). So long as you try and find the latest drivers you should be OK

Thank you.
I'm with USB Debugging and did tried BOOTLOADER mode as well RECOVERY(TWRP 2.8.5) and while REBOOTING into system. on each on of the 3 steps the computer installed a driver.but it will not show up.
I tried installing ADB Universal driver and it did installed HTC driver, but still, i have yellow triangles in device manager(HTC MTP DEVICE) and the phone is not showing and fastboot is not working.
*Edit 2*
I also noticed this:
*EDIT*
Ok, i have returned to stock, no change there.
I have connected the phone to an old windows 7 x86 laptop, it worked fine.
I have connected the phone to a windows 8.1 x64 desktop, not problem there.
I tried to copy the specific MTP driver files from the working desktop machine to my 8.1 x64 laptop(delteting the specific files first), and it still not working...
the strange thing is that ADB work and the HTC Sync Manager recognize the phone when the phone is in bootloader.
Nevermind, I have reverted back to Windows 7 Ultimate SP1 x64.
Its working again.
I guess its Lenovo's fault for not making drivers compatible with windows 8.1.
Hey everyone,
I cant get my phone to be shown in Windows File Explorer.
Yes I already switched to Datatransfer via the notification.
I tried different cables, rebooted both devices, turned on USB-Debugging, but its just not showing up.
When attaching my OnePlus 7 Pro it works perfectly fine.
Any Ideas?

It's usually either the cable or the port, maybe try out another USB slot on your PC.

Mine wouldn't either and to get it to open I had to have developer options turned on. That was the first thing I did when I received the phone, turn developer options on and when it's off the computer won't recognize the phone so I just leave it on all the time.

I've had the exact same issue ever since first getting the 6 Pro. Tried different cables, different ports, developer options is on, tried every single different USB driver I could find etc etc.
The only way I can get my PC to see the phone is to choose "PTP" as the connection method and then it will just show me the photo folders on the phone. Highly frustrating!

Have you tried with this driver installed?
Get the Google USB Driver | Android Studio | Android Developers
The Google USB Driver is required to perform adb debugging on Windows with Google devices.
developer.android.com
Make sure your device's DEFAULT USB CONFIGURATION under Developer Options (half way down) is set to "file transfer/android auto". Mine was set to "no data transfer" by default
Type C to Type C works just fine.

This is what mine shows. You know, now that I think about it, I saw in Windows there were "optional" updates (second screenshot), two of which say "LeMobile". If yours says LeMobile, try uninstalling those drivers from Device Manager and installing the official Google ones as @Lughnasadh
suggested https://developer.android.com/studio/run/win-usb. You can also do as @Az Biker suggested, or each and every time you connect your phone to your computer, you'll have to toggle the notification to set it to USB file transfer mode (third screenshot).

When you click on your notification, you don't see the option I have chosen below "Use USB for" "File transfer / Android Auto" (first screenshot)?. Also, as I believe has also been suggested, you can go into Developer Options and choose "Default USB configuration", and then choose "File transfer / Android Auto" from there (second and third screenshots).
If you don't see the same options as I show in these screenshots, can you post some of what you do see?
The Pixel 6 seems to be somewhat sensitive to some cables. A few things: if you have ADB Debugging on, then the driver will show as an ADB interface under Android Device. so if you are just wanting to transfer files, turn it off. it should work with developer options disabled. Also, sometimes if your usb drivers aren't updated or installed properly, then it won't show up properly. a lot of computers don't have usb-c ports so just make sure all your drivers are up to date (using the official manufacturer's method, not third party driver apps). And on a PC, try using the ports on the back of the computer. Different cables and last but not least try a different computer. this will resolve 99% of issues. last tip is to try connecting the phone when its in safe mode.
Brand new Pixel 6 and Windows 10 with latest updates. I've tried everything from various cables to uninstalling and reinstalling drivers with no joy. In PTP, the pixel shows up in device manager under portable devices and also in file explorer, but only with ADB debugging enabled. Switch to USB File Transfer and it disappears. My workaround is to create a folder in DCIM, copy with PTP to the new folder, and then using the Android Files app, move the files to where I want them. Very frustrating. Almost making me wish I had stuck with my Huawei.
Under Android devices in Device Manager, it read Google Nexus ADB Driver. I uninstalled and then deleted the driver, Android Composite Interface self-installed, and now File Transfer works. Go Figure.
Forget about adb drivers, that has nothing to do with UMS, so don't waste your time.
I'd suggest *trying* with a linux liveusb to see if it works there. If it does, it rules out a hardware problem and demonstrates that there is nothing wrong on the phone side, and confirms that the problem is, as with most problems, the fault of that windows trash.
Right click the ADB-device in device manager (somehow it says ACER @ mine), choose properties > manual driver update and choose the standard usb-mtp driver. After that you will see your pixel and its contents (when u choose file transfer).

^100%.
adb/fastboot are completely different drivers and have nothing to do the Mass Storage drivers that are built into windows since WinME. There is no driver to download. Make sure USB debugging is off on the pixel (and better yet entire developer options just to get this working). Make sure there are no "unknown devices" in Device Manager when the phone isn't plugged in because that could be a usb driver issue.
Then connect a known working cable that you've used before. Use the back usb ports of its an older computer. These drivers are built into windows (For Mac you will need to download the File Transfer drivers from Android's website).
If that still doesn't work, try another computer. You'll be going in circles until you've verified that the computer and cable are working. Process of elimination.
You can try the free nirsoft.com app called USBDeview to see if it's shows up, but 99% sure its a cable or windows issue.

With all due respect, I beg to differ. I neglected to mention previously that it only works with ADB debugging on. With debugging off, no joy. I must have something to do with ADB. I have gone around in the circles described by Alekos and what I posted above is the only thing that has worked. With ADB debugging on and with Android Composite ADB Interface installed on device manager under Android Device, it works. With ADB debugging off, it doesn't work. By the way, I have used a good cable on multiple computers without success.

Absolutely false. Completely unrelated.
Okay, this is getting kind of ridiculous. I cannot get any computer to see the 9 pro via ADB devices.
This is my 4th Oneplus phone I currently own. So I know what I'm doing. All my other phones have bootloaders unlocked and rooted. No issues, until now. I just bought this one. Been waiting for the unlock bin file because it's the T-Mobile variant, but found out that I don't need the bin file to unlock the bootloader, but need ADB to see it !
Fastboot devices will see the phone but not ADB. I even just reformatted my laptop and started from scratch. Followed all of the guides I could find, and I STILL cannot get ADB to see this phone. Why is this phone different ?
Anyways. Anyone have any ideas cause I'm out of them.
Install all the proper drivers. How are you connecting the OnePlus 9 pro to your PC?
Are you using windows or linux?
If you are using linux, I can't help you out.
Enable USB debugging via developer options and go to USB configuration:
Select usb debugging as the default.
When you want to transfer files, select file transfer.
Also, do you have access to another usb cable?

Hi and thanks for the link. I have tried all of that except the universal drivers which I just installed. No difference. When the phone is booted it shows up as USB composite device. And when I try to update the driver, even after disabling driver verification, it will accept the driver but will show a small yellow icon over the newly installed driver.
In bootloader mode ADB does not see the phone but fastboot does. It looks like this could be a driver issue but the only Oneplus drivers I've found are from 2012.

It's connected with a USB A - C cable. In device manager it says kedacom USB device. After installing the drivers from the link @TheGhost1951 sent me. It now set itself up as a Universal Serial Bus Device - ADB interface.
In bootloader mode it shows up in device manager with whatever driver I had chosen from before. ADB still can't see the device on either my desktop or newly formatted laptop.
So a pic of the device manager will show basically that. Whatever driver I have chosen. But any driver I chose, ADB still won't find the phone. Regardless what I do on either computer.

If driver is correct, your device should show up in device manager on PC as a port with description as 9008.....ex:Qualcomm USB hub 9008 or something similar. Google latest Qualcomm USB drivers... Make sure driver signing is turned off on PC, there should be a watermark in bottom right hand corner stating test mode. One the correct drivers are installed, reboot PC and then you are ready to start the MSM tool process.

Okay thanks for that info. But I have yet to see that qualcomm port yet on either of my computers. No matter what I do it doesn't seem to change anything. Certainly nothing near having a qualcomm port in device manager.
I would be willing to completely reformat my laptop and install the recommended drivers from this post if I knew it would definitely work.
But I'm starting to think at this point that this might be a hardware issue.
