[Q] OTA updates - Xperia Play Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

i have heard that if you have removed any system apps from your phone, your phone will be ultimately screwed if you install an OTA update. Can anyone clarify?

My personal experience was that I couldn't install the OTA update. I think you're getting confused with a OTA and a unlocked bootloader mate.

If you're missing system apps, you indeed cannot install a rom ota. If you put the apps back into /system/app/ you should be able to update again. You can always update non-ota though

Safe to system update while rooted?

I just went back to the normal rom and see i have system update? Is it fine to update when im rooted idk what it is im on android 2.2. Im new what is this system update? Thanks

It won't work if you still have a custom recovery and/or deleted system apps. There's no real reason to update like that when you can just flash an updated ROM and call it a day. Besides, there haven't been any updates for a while now, and as soon as one hits rest assured that all our ROMs will get updated by their respective devs.
Ok thanks

I heard from someone a while ago it might brick your phone, so I just turned off the automatic system updates. Just flash an updated rom and you're good.
first of all the update will download but, it wont install. If you really want the update you will have to either wait until there is a custom rom with it or unroot and install the update.

[Q] htc update

so today i got a msg asking if i would like to update my htc software. now i know having a rooted phone you never do an ota update, but that is for the firmware this is for htc hardware. so do i do it or not. thanx for any and all help.
How can an OTA update hardware?
sorry thats software not hardware
it says the following
a system update is available
would i like to download the following system update?
a system upgrade for 2.3 (gingerbread) is available that provides minor enhancements. please download and install the following update. system upgrade 4.53.651.1 (17.01 MB)
-fota update
like i said pretty sure you dont download firmware updates if your rooted how about this
That is a firmware update.
So no, don't accept it.

when i went to settings/system updates and checked for a firmware update it said firmware is up to date then i checked htc software update theres one available whats the differance between the two
It seems that the updates to the OS come from HTC.
If you were to accept, it would remove root access and custom recovery. It will not make your phone S-ON.
also my phone already is 2.3.3
also whats the diferance between htc software and firmware
Actually, when the first 2.3 updates rolled out, people who didn't unroot first, got the update and kept root.
so what do i do i still dont know the difference between the two kinds of updates

Are you on the stock rom?
It's still an OTA update regardless of what it's officially called, which is what you're generally advised against. You can accept the update if you're on the stock rom, but you may have to reflash your recovery and possibly flash the Superuser zip.
If you're not on the stock rom, don't accept it. If you want the update, you can flash the rooted version of the latest update through recovery.

very cool everyone thanx for the info im just rooted no custom roms or anything yet still trying to figure out wich is rite for me so to be safe im just gonna ignore it im kind of wondering what kind of enhancments it has though

system upgrade 4.53.651.1 Fixes:
Contact transfer over Bluetooth: issues with some car kits
Picasa issue where some images are cut off.
Group contacts not in alphabetical order
Error for Out of memory – Unable to send SMS
Also You can accept this update without losing your s-off, after you update just reflash your custom recovery of choice and superuser apk and you are rooted once again
thanx twiz for the info and the step by step coming from web os im still quite the noob on this platform but learning fast from folks like you

New software update, can't update

My SGS2 got a software update from t-mobile, and when i try to install it, it goes to the clock work recovery mod. How do i update my phone? Thanks for the help!
I believe you need stock recovery to do the OTA update. If you're rooted, it's probably just better to grab one of the updated roms from the development forum and flash it. That's what I did instead of going through the hassle of un-rooting and updating.

Judging by the fact that you have CWM, I'm assuming you have a custom rom. If that's the case, you can prevent the update notices by using ANY root file explorer ( I use ES as its free on the market) and backup/delete both /system/app/ wssysync apk's. The nagging update will be gone ;-)

Sprint OTA - Will I be bricked?

Hi there,
I have a Sprint EPIC 4G Touch that is rooted. My phone is prompted me to for an OTA update to 4..0.4. I'm assuming that my phone will brick if I click update. Will it? Can I somehow stop this stupid prompting and wait for the OTA rooted version? I do like sprint roms... yeah I know.. I just want it rooted and have ICS too.
Thanks all!!
allow the update and then just reroot
Really?

Will I lose all my apps and stuff or will it just return me to upgraded stuff? sorry, I know this is dumb questioning.
The OTA will not brick your phone because it does not wipe. Once you have it upgraded the process of rooting does not delete data either.
If you attempt to download the update, during the installation process, it will fail and bump you back where you were.

You can stop the notification by disabling system updates with titanium backup. The worst that can happen if you download it is it won't install. If all you did was root and didn't add CWM or delete any uninstallable apps the update should install. The rooted OTA is already available from sfhub in the dev section and the stock rooted FF18 Rom has has been out for two months. We just didn't know it was the official until a week ago. Most of the custom ICS roms are now based on FF18.

[Q] ATT software update with rooted phone

I keep getting a notification about an ATT update and I was wondering if it will affect my rooted phone. I just have a basic 'stock' odin root, not a custom Rom. The update will not let me disable notifications and will only let me delay the reminders 8 hrs........... I am getting tired of seeing the notifications and dont know what it will do if I update. Any advice is appreciated!!!
Thanks

Yeah it will remove the root but you can re-root it after the update or use supersu pro to conserve root (though not guaranteed).
Have you modified any system apps or files at all? If not i don't see why you won't, just be sure to run Voodoo OTA Keeper before installing the update and restore it after the update. As this update patches the ExynosAbuse exploit
Download OTA root keeper from the play store.

That update (from like 2/18 or something) is a baseband update (to MA4) and didnt mess with root on mine.

I went ahead and accepted the update and it didnt effect my root, but I did get a notification on the 'pull down' screen that the update was unsuccessful.

So you are saying that you were on a rooted stock LK2 ROM, and ran the OTA update successfully without losing root? And this was without using RootKeeper OTA or SuperuserSU set to protect root?

Same here. My phone kept rebooting to TWRP also, which may have something to do with it.

Your phone will not correctly install an OTA update if you have a custom recovery. You will need to find it in the development forums, already rooted, and as a flashable ZIP in custom recovery.
