[Q] htc update - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

so today i got a msg asking if i would like to update my htc software. now i know having a rooted phone you never do an ota update, but that is for the firmware this is for htc hardware. so do i do it or not. thanx for any and all help.

How can an OTA update hardware?

sorry thats software not hardware
it says the following
a system update is available
would i like to download the following system update?
a system upgrade for 2.3 (gingerbread) is available that provides minor enhancements. please download and install the following update. system upgrade 4.53.651.1 (17.01 MB)
-fota update
like i said pretty sure you dont download firmware updates if your rooted how about this

That is a firmware update.
So no, don't accept it.
Sent from my PC36100 using Tapatalk

when i went to settings/system updates and checked for a firmware update it said firmware is up to date then i checked htc software update theres one available whats the differance between the two

It seems that the updates to the OS come from HTC.
If you were to accept, it would remove root access and custom recovery. It will not make your phone S-ON.

also my phone already is 2.3.3
also whats the diferance between htc software and firmware

Actually, when the first 2.3 updates rolled out, people who didn't unroot first, got the update and kept root.

so what do i do i still dont know the difference between the two kinds of updates

Are you on the stock rom?
It's still an OTA update regardless of what it's officially called, which is what you're generally advised against. You can accept the update if you're on the stock rom, but you may have to reflash your recovery and possibly flash the Superuser zip.
If you're not on the stock rom, don't accept it. If you want the update, you can flash the rooted version of the latest update through recovery.

very cool everyone thanx for the info im just rooted no custom roms or anything yet still trying to figure out wich is rite for me so to be safe im just gonna ignore it im kind of wondering what kind of enhancments it has though
Sent from my PC36100 using Tapatalk

system upgrade 4.53.651.1 Fixes:
Contact transfer over Bluetooth: issues with some car kits
Picasa issue where some images are cut off.
Group contacts not in alphabetical order
Error for Out of memory – Unable to send SMS
Also You can accept this update without losing your s-off, after you update just reflash your custom recovery of choice and superuser apk and you are rooted once again

thanx twiz for the info and the step by step coming from web os im still quite the noob on this platform but learning fast from folks like you

[Q] 2.2 tomorrow confirmed. am i ready?

hey guys, so VZM has officially announced that the Incredible will be getting froyo starting tomorrow! woo finally.
anyway, im concerned with making sure all of my software is ready for the OTA without any issues.
i am currently rooted, S-Off running stock 2.1update 1. im also running the leaked ota with 720p, 2.05 radio and the upgraded H-boot.
with all of the above will i be all set to get the OTA update and update while keeping all my apps and data as well as maintain S-off?
thanks for the help guys,
Kevin
Yep...you are ready

awesome, thanks.
i also have clockwork recovery running, so i believe i need to install the stock recovery image? if so how exactly do i do that?
thanks!
same sort of concern for me, I just rooted via UnRevoked 3 the other day and am going to do Forever tonight on both of our incredibles. When I flash the update, how do I regain super-user permissions in the OTA FROYO? (the update.zip) file they talk about? Any ideas (still a bit new at this). Want to be able to continue wi-fi tether again for free!
So Im rooted with unrevoked3 and forever. Didn't mess with my radio, or any kernels. So since I'm on unrevoked forever does that mean the ota will be pushed to my phone as is?
Sent from my ADR6300 using XDA App
If you have unrevoked forever, just install stocl recovery once the ota gets pushed out

and once we have the OTA installed? How to re-gain root access?

The same way as installing stock recovery, you would just download and install clockwork recovery back to your phone

If not, the leak is the one coming ota. They're one and the same.

I'm a total noob but I installed the original leaked OTA upgrade (720p) with Radio version 2.05. Then after not being able to find a bunch of Apps I rooted and installed the leaked 8/1 Froyo. So now in about phone I have:
Android Version: 2.2
Baseband: 2.05.00.06.11
Kernel: 2.6.32.15-g5e1ab8b ([email protected]#1
Build Number: 3.16.605.0 CL203589 release-keys
Software Number: 3.16.605.0
If the OTA Froyo gets pushed to my phone is it safe for me to accept and upgrade? I realize root might be lost but I'm most concerned about the radio thing. I've heard of people bricking their phone if they upgrade that incorrectly. Will the new OTA upgrade the radio (to 2.15?) - and I am I good to go?
Thanks for any info and sorry for my lack of experience.....
-Jay
thanks i just wanted to make sure I had everything ready to go and it really was as easy as re-installing clock-work after the official OTA to gain root access again!

pretty sure it wil only brick if you update the same radio twice, I had no problem running the update on kernel and radio.

Sweet thanks! I just did the unrevoked forever so I guess I'm good to go....
Looking forward to it....
I just copied this from VZW when you click HTC Incred. They are definitely now marketing it as a 2.2 device

Just to clarify this: You must have the stock recovery BEFORE you accept the OTA. Otherwise, the new radio won't flash and features will not work. There are instructions on how to install the stock recovery with s-off here.
I'm rooted and running 2.2 that was leaked a month or so ago with radio 2.05...will I get the OTA update and, if so, is there anything I will need to do different than anyone else who is running stock 2.1 before I do the update?

Sry I ready this after I alrready submited my last post...but I have the exact same set-up as you Jay...I have the same concerns. I've heard some people saying that we have to revert back to 2.1 before accepting the update...is this true?
Ok im a total noob at this.
I am currently rooted with forever
i have:
firmware: 2.1 update1
baseband: 1.00.03.04.06 (had 2.15 before)
Will i not receive the update if i don't have stock recovery?
I want to avoid wiping all my information from my phone (which i understand flashing the stock recovery does)
again sorry im a noob.
if someone could write out a quick step by step it would be GREATLY appreciated.
You'll receive the notification to update I assume. But you'll need stock recovery to actually go through with it. Then after install put clock work back on...

Safe to system update while rooted?

I just went back to the normal rom and see i have system update? Is it fine to update when im rooted idk what it is im on android 2.2. Im new what is this system update? Thanks
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
It won't work if you still have a custom recovery and/or deleted system apps. There's no real reason to update like that when you can just flash an updated ROM and call it a day. Besides, there haven't been any updates for a while now, and as soon as one hits rest assured that all our ROMs will get updated by their respective devs.
Ok thanks
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
I heard from someone a while ago it might brick your phone, so I just turned off the automatic system updates. Just flash an updated rom and you're good.
first of all the update will download but, it wont install. If you really want the update you will have to either wait until there is a custom rom with it or unroot and install the update.

[Q] OTA updates

i have heard that if you have removed any system apps from your phone, your phone will be ultimately screwed if you install an OTA update. Can anyone clarify?
My personal experience was that I couldn't install the OTA update. I think you're getting confused with a OTA and a unlocked bootloader mate.
Sent from my R800i using xda premium
If you're missing system apps, you indeed cannot install a rom ota. If you put the apps back into /system/app/ you should be able to update again. You can always update non-ota though

[Q] Evo Design 4g system update

Son has a Evo Design 4g, it is rooted, there is a system update for it, so we snagged it but when it is installing the update it fails and the battery has to be removed.
Could this be caused by being rooted??
Yes. Never accept OTA update on a rooted phone.
Sent from my PC36100 using xda app-developers app
Ahhhhh, thank you...
A more forward-looking response might be "if you want the latest OTA, you will have to wait for a developer to prepare a rooted version of it that you can flash." (or if you want the latest version right now no matter what, you could just nuke the phone, unroot, start over etc, but I assume you rooted for a reason and want to keep root.)
Anyway, you might be able to go back to wherever you found root in the first place and see if any of those guys have incorporated the update into their latest ROMs.

SPH-D710 FI27 to FL24 (Status 7)

I continuously keep getting notified that there's an update available for my phone, but just now realized that it's actually failing with the below message.
error in /cache/35935f252780.update_SPH-D710_FI27_to_FL24-1.zip (Status 7)
After rebooting the phone, I am greeted with a message that the update was a success, but then a week or two later I'm notified about the exact same update being available which always fails.
I still have full root access so, how exactly do I fix this?
Try this

Thanks but uhm that will kill Over The Air updates altogether how does that resolve my issue if I want to be able to update?

Are you completely stock, unrooted, stock recovery? If so you may have a bad download and try over WiFi.

Had same problem. Nuked that file in /cache/ It's all good now.
@BluesRulez: I've been rooted for a long time now. My Wi-Fi stays on so I'm not exactly sure how to trigger the download manually.
@Snegtul: So you just deleted the file and let it redownload, and now it works fine? How exactly do I trigger the update manually?

Why would I need to go back to stock or use the one click to get the update?
I've been getting notified of the update repeatedly, I've already deleted the update in the cache folder I just need the update to redownload.
Can someone help me out here and explain your answer, I'm not going to brick my phone.
It wont download with your phone rooted. Only way to get rid of it is to do what everyone else has said, If you dont want to do what they suggest you can either deal with the messages or unroot your phone and update it. Sorry if this isnt what you are looking for, but their are no other solutions

I didn't understand that it wouldn't update with the phone being rooted. Now that makes sense. Although it will download it will just error out if your phone is already rooted right?
Then after updating is it possible to reroot the phone again or is this latest update to keep users unrooted to begin with?
So only modification to your phone is root? Deleting sprint apks will not allow you to do an OTA update.
Have you gone into the cache partition using a root file explorer and deleted the update.zip file?
If yes to above 2 answers,
Right after deleting the file, reboot the phone and turn on wifi.
Go to settings, system updates and check for firmware update.
It should show downloading update...
Let it download and then install. Make sure phone is charged.
If this doesn't work, you will have to UNROOT using a FI27 one click that preserves your user data. Once you are unrooted, try OTA update again.
I do have a question, Why do you want OTA update if you are going to be rooted? Installing OTA update will unroot.
As far as I know yes the only change is the phone is rooted and I have gone into the cache folder and deleted the update.zip. I have already rebooted the phone and tried checking for software updates, but I'm always told that I have the latest version, kernel 3.0.15-1127689.
I remember having an OTA update before and it working just fine, it was a long time ago so maybe I'm wrong?
I only want the OTA update to get the latest version. I'd prefer Jelly Bean, but I think that isn't even available for Epic4GTouch or ever will be. So if unrooting to get the update and then being stuck unrooted, and the latest update really doesn't fix/add anything then I may as well just leave it as is.

can't update to FL24

My phone can't seem to update to FL24. Can anyone offer suggestions on what else to try? Details below. Thanks!

I've tried
Settings -> Applications - > All -> Google Services Framework -> Clear Data
Wait
Settings -> System Updates -> Update Samsung Softwareas suggested on Android Central
and I've tried wiping the cache.
My phone is completely stock (as far as i know!)
Here's some specs that might be useful to someone who knows what they mean:
Model Number
SPH-D710
Android Version
4.0.4
Baseband Version
S710.10 S.FI27
Kernel Version
3.0.15-1127689
[email protected] #3
SMP PREEMPT Thu Sep 27 18:24:35 KST
2012
Build Number
IMM76I.FI27
Hardware Version
D710.10
If your phone is completely stock then you need a custom recovery to flash a ROM
Edit: nvm I just read more closely, you might just be getting a bad download..try it on wifi. But if you wamt to root you would need/want a custom recov.
