Hi all - I searched for references to this issue, but haven't found anything yet. Hope someone here can help.
I've been using my Galaxy Nexus (LTE / Verizon) since mid December, locked, unrooted, vanilla - and it's been great. I've been using the native email apps for my GMail account and my work/corporate account on our company's Exchange Server. All has worked perfectly so far. First sign of something weird happened last night.
Last night I backed up, rooted and unlocked my GNex (using the WugFresh utility). I followed the directions closely -- all worked pretty much perfectly. As suggested, I took 2 backups: first without system apps and settings, and the 2nd including them. After I was done rooting and unlocking, I restored the big backup with system apps and settings. Only thing I noticed is that passwords are apparently not part of the settings that can be saved/restored (makes sense!), so I had to reenter credentials for my email apps.
This done, I sync to both GMail and Exchange Server, receive and send mail just fine. Only weird thing is that when I tap the EMail icon to start up the email client that talks to Exchange Server, in addition to opening up my inbox properly, I ALSO see two error messages in sequence:
"Account wasn't found. It may have been removed."
and
"Folder wasn't found. It may have been removed."
The errors then fade, and email is perfectly usable.
I'm guessing that some folder and account entry was restored along with the apps from my backup, and that whatever these pointed to no longer exist, and were superseded by they email app when I reconnected to the Exchange Server during setup after rooting / unlocking.
I've looked - and only see a single account configured in the app -- the correct one. I've checked in Settings / Apps, and there are no options to clear data or cache.
I'm wondering if I should delete the one account I see and re-add it...not sure if that will make a difference.
Anyone have a clue what's going on, and what I might do about it?
thanks in advance,
Jon

In the end, I wound up doing a factory reset on the phone. I was tempted to delete and recreate the account, but I'm convinced there was a phantom (non-existent?) folder / account that the email client kept trying to refer to and that this would have persisted. A factory reset cured the issue, and this time I did NOT restore my entire backup including system apps and data. Instead, I let Google Play and Amazon App store reinstall 99% of my apps, leaving me 3 or 4 that I had to do by hand. In the end it didn't take long at all to do this, and result is a happy Galaxy Nexus once more.

Hi, just wanted to let you know what the solution was in my case. I was messing around with everything, wasting two full days with about 100 times recreating the account, trying to restore/replace Mail/ExchangeServices app/data in various different ways, factory reset, reflashing system, etc. etc. ... nothing helped!
Finally, a few minutes ago I got it: Just recreate the stupid homescreen link! I never thought about trying to start the Mail application via "all apps". If I did (earlier), I would have seen (earlier) that the message does not appear then. It only appears when starting it via my homescreen link, which is actually a widget (looking like a normal app link), configured to open a certain folder of a certain account. So the actual problem was just that this widget could not find the "old" account anymore (probably because some account id changes if an account is deleted and recreated). The reason I've been fooled over and over again (even after factory resets and system flashes) is because I always restored my homescreen stuff in one way or another, so I always used the same old broken link.
D'OH!
Hope that next time someone comes across this issue this post will help. Currently there seems to be no (other) solution to this on the internet. At least I did not find anything in the past two days.
Thanks for posting an easy solution!

Thank you so much. I just had to recreate my account settings (5 of them since Ihave corporate but also use exchange settings for hotmail) and hated to see this message (and a second one similar but about a folder who could not be found). I removed the icon on the home screen and put the Email app (not the widget to avoid the same problem in the future) back and not more error! I really did not want to reset my phone.

Hi All, new here...I have a HTC TP2 with Winmo 6.5 installed. Here's my situation, a couple days ago I used to received emails from my gmail account, now all of a sudden I can just send and not recieved any emails from gmail. My yahoo and hotmail accounts are running fine. Anyone have any ideas why my gmail is not receiving??? I spoke to one of the TMobile reps and it seems all they can do is HARD RESET the device. Any help? thanks in advance
I use Seven for my push e-mail, google, yahoo, exchange all work flawlessly. Have you made any changes to your device around the time it stopped working?
no i haven't changed anything on my phone which is kinda weird, I really don't want to hard reset the phone since restoring things is taking a toll on me. I would like for it to be a last resort but on the other hand I might just end up doing it since Im flirting with the idea of flashing to one of the custom roms here in xda. any ideas?
just my two cents... yesterday I discovered that all of a sudden my Gmail account had disappeared from the account selector (leaving only Outlook), I could still see the emails but couldn't reach account settings or nothing
Somehow it returned, but with most settings in blank.. imap and smtp server, SSL options, all were in blank.. no idea why or how this happened, but filled all blanks up again and now Gmail's working fine...
Trouble w/ Gmail after WinMo 6.5 Sprint upgrade
Just upgraded my Sprint TP2 to WinMo 6.5 today. Why this update took so long to come to Sprint customers is beyond me, but overall, I'm pretty pleased with the update, save one problem that has made me "strategically relocate" my phone with sudden velocity...twice.
I've been trying to set up Gmail since this evening, with zero success. I had my Gmail account set up on the device before the upgrade/update, but now...
I've tried every known method to enter the settings, but whenever the device tries to connect to the Google servers, it tells me I need to check my user name & password, even though I've entered both correctly.
I've even logged into my Gmail account on my laptop, changed the password just to make sure I've entered the correct one, & the device still kicks back to the user name/password screen saying the settings are wrong...I KNOW THAT THEY'RE NOT!!!
I've seen several posts from users experiencing trouble with Gmail on 6.5, but these have all seemed to stem from Wi-Fi vs. other types of connections.
I've also installed Google Sync & my Gmail has DL'd to my device, but I prefer to get my e-mail through the normal account setup.
Sorry so lengthy & thanks in advance for any advice anyone may be able to provide.
not sure if it is googles problem or our phones but i spoke to a couple of people with iphones and gmail accounts and it seems that they arent having any problems receiving their gmails. Did windows take a dump sometime this week?

Not sure if this will help, but... when username is requested, you have to type the complete idem, i.e., [email protected]er ... some time ago I had same problem as yours and solved it after realizing that I was including my username alone, without the @myserviceprovider.com part

Thanx, sirgal. Actually, I had tried both ways - one with just the username and one with my entire e-mail address, both to no avail.
However, I say "had tried" because, lo & behold, today just as I'm about to contact HTC tech support to see if 6.5 was causing Gmail probs, I decided to try creating the account ONE MORE TIME. Murphy's Law prevailed and, for reasons unbeknownst to me...IT WORKED.
I did everything the exact same way as I tried yesterday, but this time success. I'm taking a strictly "don't ask, don't tell" approach as to why it worked today.
Thanks again for the suggestion!
I'm having a similar problem hopefully someone can help with. I've setup my gmail account and had it working fine until without any cause I can determine, the accout disappears except for still showing up on the TouchFlo e-mail "tab." When this first happened, I started from scratch and setup "Gmail2" which also worked for a while. The reason I had to name it Gmail2 is that when I tried to use Gmail as I had originally done it tells me that this name is already in use. It just did this to me again and sure enough, I had to name the account Gmail3 this time around. I don't understand why they are "disappearing" nor why the name is still in use and the previous 2 versions still show up on the TouchFlo e-mail tab and nowhere else.
Odd question, or at least I think it is as this is the closest thread to the actual problem I'm having that I've found here or the HTC forums. Thank you in advance for any assistance.

I have the exact same happened to me multiple times in the past. The only solution I found is to restore from a previous backup. Fortunately I backup at least once per week so it wasn't too disastrous but still annoying.
Unfortunately, I haven't ever done a backup (honestly never thought of it for a phone) so that isn't going to help. What I'm hoping for is if someone else has seen this and how to delete the ghost accounts. Thank you wearefree for the help.
have read a bit about google changing the email settings to gmail and market not downloading apps and now this has happened to me i just wanted to see if there was an updated solution without doing a factory reset...please help
I looked into this a while back and found this on another site... I haven't actually done it yet, but it sounds promising!?
Change Google Account
If you want to change your primary gmail account for Gmail, its much easier.
Don not hard reset means set to factory defaults , by erasing all data and application , instead go to
1. Settings -> Applications ->Manage Applications ->
Here you have to "Clear Data" from
1. Gmail
2. Gmail Storage
3. Google Apps
4. Google talk and Talk services
5. and IM. (Would be rare to have this showing unless you are using Google IM)
clearing data is much simple just click on aplication and clear data.
the Dev also warns that Google Storage will want to keep filling up so do that one last before exiting Manage Applications section.
Then, of course, you must regularly restart your phone, when it comes back, you will need to enter your new chose gmail, then follow the instructions. You also should do a *228, 2 for OTA, but may not be needed. What may be needed is having to do a *228 , 9 (as previously instrcted at any Verizon Store when you bought the phone in the first place).
This method of changing the an Android devices primary gmail account actually works. So let's all stop the goddamn FUD that we can't change the primary email AND LET CUSTOMERS KNOW and/or right a batch file with a shortcut in Manage Applications so that we can just stop all this bickering. Now this next part is probably why Google, Android Market, Verizon employees, Motorola CS employees are all saying "it can't be done", is probably due to the next relatively complex procedure:
The apps PURCHASED need only be re-registered, but in order to NOT Download and pay for them again, you will have to remove your CC from the old gmail/Google Checkout and use it in Google Checkout with the NEW gmail you have chosen for your new Droid primary - sure beats re-DLing and installing all those apps. Unfortunately the CC has to be the SAME CC you used on the old gmail account otherwise you ARE stuck with re-purchasing the apps from the Market using the NEW gmail you have chosen along with the different CC/Google Checkout.

cheers this kinda helped but then i changed my account to "gmail.com" then it stopped
I created and added a secondary Googlemail account onto my Droid3 and would like to remove completely my old(first one). Unfortunately my Droid3 doesn't allow that to me, because it says I have to do a factory reset which I don't want. I manually switched within various applications from my old Gmail-Account to my new one. I also cleared data of all GoogleApps I found under Settings-->Applications-->Manage Apps-->All.
I rebooted the phone, but I'm still not able to remove this unwanted Gmail account. Why? How can I check and proof which applications my old account is assigned to?
any help appreciated
Ok,
(Before those that have nothing to do start shouting, I have searched! I spend hours last night looking and time this morning looking. This error is NOT related to a googlemail/gmail switch..it is NOT related to internet connection..it is NOT related to some obscure cache issue [i think]. So now that caveate is out of the way....)
I cannot download anything from the Market. Here is the process as I see it...
- Open Market app from phone
- Find app I want and click download
- Go back to main Market screen and click download tab
- App sits there with a 'starting download process'
Now...if the error is somewhere there...can someone please tell me.
But...a few minutes later I get this...
- Alert noise goes off
- Alert says Google Talk authentication failed
- Go and stop the app in the running apps screen
- Find GTalk app on phone and start it up
- It hangs up on the Talk bubble screen with Signing in swirly thing just going round
- Eventually that alert noise goes off again
So...there seems to have been an issue many months back when UK customers switched from googlemail domains to gmail domains. But I have never had either. I am registered with google and I have one of my personal emails set up on that account. I can log into google, I can use Picasa, I can use the forums, etc.
Now, I already have three different email accounts to keep track of...do not need a fourth. But in a fit of desperation I tried to set up a gmail account last night. After 30 minutes of trying to find a user name I gave up. I do not want to be D.sablesurfer.432456 or whatever stupid azz suggestion it gives.
So...things I am wondering...
Is Google Talk integrated with Market somehow?
Can you just use Market with a regular Google log in?
How do I make google talk work since there appears to be no where on phone to change any settings?
Where is google talk looking on my phone for log in information?
Does this have anything to do with the weird sprint email address that seems to be registered to my phone? (Current username = [email protected]) (Obviously where my name would be my real name.)
Please help, the internet has been wholey useless in showing me an answer to this issue.
Oh...and if I log into google web page from phone...and choose Talk from the more menu...
....I am logged into Talk!!!
Yep, it just pulls right up with no complaints.
Ok, lots of looks no feedback.
I stopped by Sprint today and they say basically that my really old Google log in will not work. They said will need to set up an actual GMail account and replace it on the phone.
HOWEVER....there is NO way to replace it without the factory reset. Seriously? Has the Evo or HTC...or Sprint locked this thing down so much that you can never change accounts?
I changed password online...and the incorrect password screen ONLY lets me change password. The account name is greyed out.
I went into Manage Applications and the only button active is the Force Stop. The Clear Data button doesn't even exist. And after the force stop it still does not exist.
How does this make any sense? Really? People are NEVER going to change accounts? Sounds way too strict to me at moment.
So basically...unless anyone else has an idea...on the Evo (not heros or g1's)...I will have to do the factory reset tonight? This sucks.
Have you tried settings, accounts and sync, click on the google account and hit remove account?
Yup, no go. The default in the Evo seems to be permanently locked in. Well until you do the factory reset. I just posted my findings/tip over on general. This is a pisser for a newbie to android and as a LONG time programmer sucks to be locked in like that.
My market was useless earlier.
the name###@sprintpcs.com is just sprints username for you, it's used for network stuff
I'm having the same issue. tired the google search too ... wish I didn't have to do a hard reset... I hope somebody come up with a fix for this
EDIT:
Here's all that I did. I'm not sure which part fixed the issue.
*I un-synced Gmail (still didn't work)
*I deleted the pop Gmail account I had set up (still didn't work)
*I went into the market, canceled everything that was pending a download, then I re-synced Gmail, and set my pop Gmail account back up and BAM!!!! It worked. (Oh and I restarted after I did all of this)
Hope this helps...
Same problem here, hope someone with great idea can help. I am also struck on my HTC evo
Market still won't downlaod
I'm on JI6,
i have this problem that i cannot get the Market to download.
I didn't see and end to this story, only that it could be a Market problem.
But still i have this issue now for 3 days, i did most of the things in this thread.
nothing works ...
HELP
This happens to everyone.
Go to applications.
Click all applications.
Find market. Click market.
Click, clear cache, and clear data.
Restart.
I'm over that, clear the data of download manager ,and from the Market application, removed the update from the market , wifi on , wifi off .....
Still wont download
Then it's your internet if that does not work.
Check your firewall
what firewall , if i work in 3G ?
I'm having the same problem...I just flashed Myn's 2.2 RL3 and it is no different than it ever was. It's pissing me off. I've tried every solution that I could find.
I was having a similar issue with my Evo running OMJ's 4.5.
On the market.android.com site I would click install, select my phone, and it said my install would start shortly, but it never did. I scoured the net and found a fix that worked for me. Try this:
Menu -> Settings -> Appplicaltions -> Manage Applications
Select the 'All' tab
Scroll down and open 'Google Services Framework' -> Clear Data and Force Stop
Hit back and open 'Market' -> Clear Data, Clear Cache (if available), and Force Stop
Reboot
Open Market. You are going to get an error, be patient and let it sit for a moment and it will come up by itself.
You should be golden after this. Let me know how it works for you.
Why must people resurrect dead threads, do they lack the ability to read, the last post to this thread was in the first week of november, if this was still happening, this would be an active thread.
I'm helping a friend who has done a nice job at messing up her GSIII. Before I go try and fix everything, I thought I'd check if I'm going down the right path.
1) Cannot install market app updates. The updates download, but install fails on all of them. Was going to wipe the Market cache and data, to see if that fixes this problem. If not, then I will uninstall Play updates. Is there another known fix for this?
2) Can't sync google contacts, calendar, etc... I had this problem before. For me, I believe it was that I added Samsung Services to my skyrocket, which then broke all other syncing. This phone has FB, Twitter, Dropbox, and Samsung Services all syncing. I disabled the syncing of everything other than google, but did not uninstall anything. Did not fix the issue yet. Next, I guess, would be to remove the other sync accounts and see what happens.
3) Related to 2) above? When Trying to re-enable Google Contacts Sync, an error stating that she must log in to her Google account to sync is displayed. The text is in this dialog box, so it's a bit hard to read. It will not take her password however. I suppose she could be using an incorrect password (she's totally non-technology oriented). I've asked her to go to a computer and log into google to validate her password (have not heard back yet).
I'm thinking that it might be wise to simply do a factory reset on the phone after manually backing up a few things, but would like to see if we can get this fixed easily without going that route. Any help is appreciated!
my 2 cents: keep it simple, document the things she has on the phone, factory reset and begin fixing issues from there. based on the issue description you've provided, you (she) could be chasing your tail trying to enable/disable, install/uninstall things to fix (as you described) multiple issues. and yes, i'm speaking from experience (lol). my cousin did something similar because she wanted a particular theme on her rooted SGS3. she was 90% there. after 5 hours of troubleshooting, we agreed to factory reset and reload apps, email, etc., and 1.5 hours later issue was resolved. good luck!

Verizon Galaxy Nexus, Stock ROM, Android 4.1.1.
When I check in Settings...Accounts...Google...
It shows a Sync Error for my account. At the bottom of the screen it says:
Sync is currently experiencing problems. It will be back shortly.
If I then click on my [email protected]
All of the entries are checked and properly synced, and up to date, except Contacts. It says 'Last Synced 4/20/2012..."
Despite this, Contact additions or edits that I make on my phone do in fact get synced to my other devices. And Contact additions or edits that I make elsewhere do get synced to my phone.
So, this appears to be a faulty error message. Since everything is working right, I'm reluctant to do anything major to try and clear the message, for fear of actually creating a functional problem. And yet, it bugs me that it's there.
One of the frequently suggested solutions is to go to Settings...Apps...Contacts Storage...
And once there, hit "Clear Data".
So my question is what exactly happens when "Clear Data" is hit? I want to eliminate the potential for inadvertently deleting my contacts overall, don't want to create new problems, etc., so would like a little more information about what this does or doesn't do.
And, if someone has any insight on another way to get rid of this message, that would be appreciated as well.
Thanks!
Anybody have any information here??
Thanks.
Try this
Hi, i face the same problem. After few hrs search in Internet, I found a way to solve it, so far it works.
Go to Google Play and install this apps: Contacts Sync Fix
Run the apps
Go to setting, open Google account and try to sync again.
It should be OK then.
Hope it helps.

Very interesting! Looks like it just came out this month. This is an incredibly common problem, if you read Google's "support" forums, which I find hard to believe how this is such a core function of the whole Google enterprise.
I wonder what this App is doing behind the scenes, or actually how it does it. All of the reviews so far are very positive, although there are only 11 of them at this time. I'll probably monitor this for a bit, and then try it out.
Thanks!
I exchanged a quick email with the Author, and went ahead and installed and ran the Contacts Sync Fix App. It identified a single problem, fixed it, and my error message is now gone, and sync continues to work fine. I went ahead and bought the ad-free version for $.99 - I have no idea if a problem will recur in the future, but I'll now be able to fix it. And besides, he fixed something Google has been unable or unwilling to do!
This solved my same problem
