Anyone get the tablet UI working on GSM GNex with Stock 4.0.2?
Tried a lot of DPI like 160, 180, 192 ... but System-UI crashes all the Time.
Had a lot of work getting my locked device to work again. Stock launcher closed direct after booting at 180 & 192. On 160 the launcher runs great but no nav. buttons appear.
Any ideas? I want a small Tablet!

U have to hide your navigation buttons...customs roms like AOKP have the feature, but idk how to do it with stock

Think it is: "qemu.hw.mainkeys=1" in "build.prop".
But that hide the Touch keys also.
Had a lot of trouble get the buttons back on my locked device.
Had forget to launch USB debug before rebooting. After booting only black screen and no adb, no settings, no buttons and no launcher...

That is the correct line to add to the build prop if you are not using AOKP. With AOKP you just need to close the nav bar in the power menu.
When you boot into a tablet density of 192 or lower you should get the Nav buttons on the bottom within the tablet bar.
On the CDMA versions, we needed to swap out the Phone APK with a WVGA phone APK in order for the phone not to close. Not sure if GSM is the same. The density's that worked were 192 - 185. 160 will force close the phone.
I haven't tried the tablet mod on stock though. I ran it on CM9, AOKP, and Axiom.
Also, I freeze the stock launcher with titanium and use Apex.
Okay.... I added this line and had no more nav bar, no buttons and no tablet bar! Nothing!
Phone works on 160, but no buttons! But 160 are also a little bit to small for me!

Use AOKP milestone 4 and change the DPI to 160. It has the tablet status bar, soft keys, etc. Even the notifications work the same way that tablets do!
If you want the phone app to work, it has been suggested to take the one from the Droid Incredible (just check the aokp downloads and take the phone apk from the droid incredible zip) and to push it to the phone via adb
I don't want to unlock and wipe my device if possible!

I just remembered you need to have root to use button savior anyway. I thought you wanted to get back to stock.
Why don't you just root your phone. It is so simple with this phone. The tool does it for you.
You can never win with a non rooted Nexus no matter what you are trying to accomplish. That is just the way it is.

Why? Cant we just force it to be in tablet mode? I changed my pixel density to 240, and some apps think it's a tablet.
With Paranoid Android, you can choose perAPP density - so you can choose camera.app to run in Tablet UI...
I tried paranoid, but didn't like it. I am now on liquid, and I like it, so I only need camera app.

Any way to add to the power down menu (holding the power button at the home screen) to include a simple reboot, and reboot to bootloader option?
I don't want to install a custom rom, I like stock rooted.
Gonna be a root feature. If you're stock rooted you can use an app like "quick boot" to have multiple reboot options from 1 app.
Its probably gonna require a custom ROM to add these to the system menu holding down the power button though. But if you're just stock, why do you need to reboot and boot into your bootloader so often? lol.
Hmm...well the goomanager app already does that, I just like the convenience of holding the power button.
I guess I could consider custom roms, but the stock "pure google" is just so...nice...but a lot of roms go changing things that I don't want changed, or add bloat that I don't want added.
This ^^^.

No I think it has both launchers, stock and nova. You can chose either.

It has nova and stock you can choose but nova looks exactly the same as stock, but its way better since you can in fact control everything like removing google search bar or increasing the grid size on desktop or removing the dock or resize the dock or infinite scrolling for desktop and dock etc etc it could stay plain stock.. So i dont see the point on going stock since with nova you can only get better than stock
AOKP does not "replace" anything, if you want stock, you can be, as same with nova with rom manager you can only get better starting from stock

Do the CDMA short codes work on it? E.g. the *#*# codes.
Did a search for this and only saw it posted in the nexus 7 area but this also works on our rooted galaxy nexus'. You can enable it without the need for a separate app by navigating to the build prop file in system and adding this line at the bottom and then reboot:
launcher.force_enable_rotation=true

Or you can type in ADB (after root) or in a shell (like terminal emulator):
Code:
echo "launcher.force_enable_rotation=true" >> /system/build.prop
If you want to go back:
Code:
sed -i 's/launcher.force_enable_rotation=true//g' build.prop
I know that is a old thread but if find it on google!

I don't know why, but I'm not able to save the changes made on the build.prop file.
I'm rooted, using RootExplorer, mounted as R/W, open the file in text editor, then save and exit. When I re-open the file, none of the changes seem to be there, is like they are not saved or the file is immediately re-generated.
Anyone has a solution?

You can change it from the emoticons key to enter key, also this isn't a flashable zip, not sure how to do one, but to install this:
1. Delete mms.apk in /system/apps
2. copy and paste new mms.apk in /system/apps
3. Set permissions
4. Reboot
Works great! Thanks!
Worked really well. Thank you!
Also for those wondering you have you enable quick emoji in the settings.

Your file is 2.7 and from aokp (cm10.1 for nexus 4) the file size is 3.1. Smaller size than aokp but somehow it lags when i open up the messages from a person. why is that?

I am not sure about the lag but the reason the file is older is because it was pulled from somebody else on this forum, they had one with facebook EMOJI and one with stock emoji. This is the stock one and in cm10 you don't have a quick emoji button option which I like but in AOKP the popup is ugly imo. Thats why the app is older.
Hello there,
I have been using stock rom for three days with certain mods and so far I like it a lot.
Just wanted to let you know about the possible mods you can find to empower the stock rom :
1. Advanced power menu
2. Battery percentage
3. Centre clock
4. T9dialer
5. Sms with quick reply from CM or other Roms works fine
6. Customised tiles with quick pulling (kevdliu mod)
You won't find mods for:
Volume wake (but you can buy pgm app for that)
Screenlock targets
Navigation bar targets (just Google search)
So far I am enjoying stock rom. Maybe I will keep using it.
However this post is a sign of personal gratitude to all users here that share their knowledge and make the stock rom a pleasant software for daily use. At least for me.
Cheers
This thread would be more useful with posted links to those mods attached.

It is certain that you will enjoy stock rom through these mods.
T9 dialer doesn't seem to work on odexed jdq39.
All the mods are for deodexed rom and for JDQ39.
There is luckily also a variant of extended power menu for odexed stock .
I'm not 100% sure since I havent done this on the Galaxy Nexus. But there is a file in /system/usr/keylayout/ that handles the hardware button actions. On my Verizon Nexus using CM10.1, the file is called "tuna-gpio-keypad.kl". In that file there will be three lines for the three buttons. VOLUME_DOWN, VOLUME_UP, and POWER. I'm not sure what the stock file has in it but if there is no "WAKE" after the volume buttons, putting it there should allow the volume wake option. Power should have WAKE after it already. This is all just in theory though. I used to mess with my hardware button controls with my old device. Havent done anything with the Nexus.
Well the wake word is there for both volume up, down and power. I think it is done on framework file.
These are all great mods I've used on any stock ROM I tried. Two mods kept me going to custom ROMs, volume keys to skip music tracks while screen off and no theme engine support. If I could get those two into the mix, I might consider a stock ROM again lol.

Here's an odexed T9 dialer I just made. I'm not on stock so I couldn't test. Recommend to make a backup of your contacts.apk and contacts.odex just in case of issues. Nandroid recommended as well. Please report if it works or has any issues.

If anyone on stock tries this, if you could verify contacts.apk and contacts.odex were placed in /system/app and permissions were set correctly, then it should be working unless something went wrong with the odexing, but I received no errors and removed the .dex file from the .apk. Any feedback is appreciated. This can be flashed via CWM/TWRP or if you are rooted, you can extract the contacts.apk and contacts.odex and copy them to /system/app and set permissions rw-r--r--. Remember to backup your existing files first or rename them by adding .bak to the filename. After copying the files, a reboot is needed.
