Digitizer replacement

Hi, has anyone replaced their digitizer on their desire z/g2? How did it go? It looks easy on the youtube vid.. have any problems? What way did you use to melt the glue? What digitizer did you use, where from?
Any info much appriciated as will be replaceing mine v soon due to 'invisible finger problem' that's driving me nuts..

Never done it on a g2 but should be pretty straight forward especially with a video lol. Use a heat gun to melt the glue, pretty much the only tool you SHOULD use to do something like that.

I replaced the digitizer on my third G2 after getting a refurb replacement from T-Mobile that had a black spot inside the actual digitizer glass, not on the outside or inside.
The process is very easy with the video, however, trying to keep dust and fingerprints from getting on the inside of the phone while you're trying to get it back together is a serious pain in the rear! If it's the same video that I watched, just use a hair drier blowing hot air to heat the adhesive on the inside of the digitizer and then pop the digitizer off very very slowly, because you don't want to accidentally bend the metal bezel around the screen.
You also may want to leave the original leftover adhesive on the inside, because when I cleaned mine off, light now always leaks out around the bottom edge of the digitizer, below the menu, home, and search buttons, even though I used the double sided adhesive strips covering the entire length of the bottom, so light shouldn't technically be leaking out. No biggie, though... it works like brand new, now!

I ordered the digi today, should be here tomorrow.. the only thing I was wondering was the glueing process, as I have not ordered the double sided glue/tape stuff, as I was just hopeing to still use the original glue as I think you are saying.. I hope that works! Have to be careful like u say with dust/fingerprints etc..

Hmm, after reading your post again, maybee I should of bought the double sided tape afterall? Do you think the old leftover glue is enough for the new digi?

Run over to radio shack they must have some kind of glue you can use lol. google cell phone screen glue see what info you can find.

Ok, just incase anyone is interested, got my new digitizer, followed the video, used a heat gun cerfully to melt the glue, pulled the old digitizer out, and used the original glue whilst still warm to hold the new digi in, as all of glue stayed on the case rather than on the digi, which was pretty lucky.. put it all back together and everything perfect, touchscreen back to how it should be.. cost me 17 pounds.

I replaced the touch screen as well and the problem persists. Plus I never ran into a part that required a heat gun did I use the wrong item?

A VERY confusing part is getting the midframe to hold to the hinge mounts. The side (black dots all down it) should overlap the stabilizer bar on the hinge. I fidgeted with it for hours until realizing it goes over, and inadvertently damaged the highly sensitive LCD screen, which resulted in me taking the whole thing apart again to replace the LCD and digitizer. UGH!
DO NOT get the cheapo digitizer on Amazon, look for one with gray spots where the menu, home, back and search keys are on the back side. The digitizers without them will not work when you swap over the white button caps on the back. I feel like this information is vital to anyone who is replacing their G2 digitizer, but most guides and videos make no mention of it.
I used a lamp to heat up the glass to remove it the first time. Took too long the second time so I used a hair dryer.

So which digitizer did you end up buying and which guide or video did you follow? I am about to tear mine apart and could use the info.

Hi, I did buy mine from amazon.co.uk, there were a few for sale,, the one I bought was supposed to be a genuine t-mobile g2 replacement (refurb I think, pressumably this just means that it was from a second hand g2 that had problems and the digi was taken out - and I'm pretty certain this is the case as mine has a thin film (which u leave on) over the back of the digi covering the tracks etc, which had a few very small air/dust bubbles under it (just noticeable when screen off), where I own a desire z, so now it sais t-mobile instead of htc, but I can live with that.
The small grey bits that you talk about were floating about or stuck on my digi when I pulled it off the main chassis. I had a look, and as far as I could work out, were possibly just for giving colour to the tiny led's that give you light to the home/search keys etc (I may be wrong on their use), but if you look closely, the tiny grey things have even smaller rectangles on them that relate to the positions of the led's on the circuit board. So I picked the remaining ones off the old digi, put them back in their correct holes and stuck the new digi in. I've had no problems (with a digi from amazon with no little grey things on it) so far, but maybee this is due to mine being a second hand original part..
Edit : Now after reading your post again, you're talking about bits that are actually on the digi itself, not the white caps that I'm talking about! Whoops. I didn't notice any grey spots on the digi itself, but I guess I must have them..

actually it says HTC on it and looks a lil bit differently than on the picture.
never the less, i replaced it really carefully and checked every connecting.
But somehow the Touchscreen doesn't work at all.
Can anyone help me ? what could be the problem ?
Wrong digitzer ?
is it okay, that the digitizer has direct contact to the frame where it is glued to ?

So you had invisible finger press in the screen, and the screen was bad responsive?
...Just to make sure my problem is digitizer problem! The service wont change it in warranty unless the problem is there all the time! But its driving me crazy! why is it happening randomly, why isnt it all the time? How could i make the screen to do this problem when i'm at the service?

[Q] How does it know it's open??

Does anyone know how the phone "knows" that the screen has been flipped open? Is there an extra sensor somewhere? For that matter, how does any android phone with a sliding keyboard know that it's open as opposed to just in landscape mode?
(This might sound like a dumb question to some, but I'm honestly curious.)

I think those "legs" have some sensor in them, cause the screen is flipping and the keyboard lights are on after the smallest movement.

Nope. Its a magnet and a magnetic sensor. The magnet is on the backside of the screen. Open the screen partially and you can stick a paper clip behind where the phone ear speaker is. I think you might be able to turn the screen on, and rotate to landscape waving a magnet at the right spot. But I'm not sure (don't have a strong enough magnet right now). On other HTC phones you can do this, to the point that cases/holsters with magnetic closures would accidentally (and annoyingly) turn the screen on.

[Q] Anyone noticed defects in the polycarbonate casing?

I noticed today that just above the bottom end of the volume rocker, between that and where the screen sits, there was a slight, sharp bump in the polycarbonate. I have managed to smooth it out some what by gently shaving it down with a sharp blade.
So i was wondering, Has anyone else noticed any defects in the casing. Things like sharp ridges, bumps or burr's?

I've not noticed anything on my phone but somebody else on this forum did have one where there was a very thin crack or molding line on one of the corners. They had it replaced IIRC.

My first one had a couple of "air bubbles" in the casing. They were very small. There was also a dark dot on the white surface on the back. I didn't swap the unit out for this..it had other problems.
The one I have now seems to be free of defects. But I did read other reports with similar things.
Perfection....not!

OK, so I'm not the only one. I guess i do have the plus side of i didn't get a white one so if there is any marks on the casing they won't show up as easily.

I have a sharp bump/ imperfection on right below the microUSB slot. Good thing its virtually invisible unless you look for it.

I only noticed the one i had because my finger brsuhed over it. I would guess it's a burr from the molding process but then it would be in the same place on every device. Although if there are different molds for the grey/black and white ones then it may just be what i suspect.
As i said in an earlier post, you can get rid of it by using a sharp blade and running of it the bump gently a couple of times to shave it down

Wont it show up in proper lightning angle?
I have on the back a small line which you can see only when holding the phone in proper lightning angle. It's hard to see, I had the phone for 15 days but I just noticed it today.

Nope. I was taking some shots of it today for a review i've done for installornot.com (link in my sig) and it just didn't show up.
But i can describe it as left over from plastic from an injection moulding process. You know how when plastic is injection moulded it leaves a sort of spike where the plastic was injected into the mould. It was exactly like that.

Ah! I've got that too plus the one in the opposite side of the dock I was explaining in the previous post.
Has any one found the same problem, the line on the back?
EDIT: I think it's the borders of the battery because I can see similar lines in proper lightning around the dock pins.

I've found two small defects on the polycarbonate body: one near the 3.5mm jack plug, like a small imperfection such as if the body was hit by something thin like a blade, and another one almost invisible on the left side.. Oh, there is also a very little gray dot on the bottom, but this is really invisible to the most people

The moulding of these cases is really not all that precise but also partly due to the fact that the casing is heated to "glue" bits of plastic and components to the inside back of the case.
I have seen on the white version if you hold it under a spot light and look along its length so you can clearly see the matte mottled effect on the back...then slowly tip the phone back and forth and you will see two horizontal lines running left to right. One a bit above the HTC logo, and one near the speaker grill. It roughly conforms to where the battery is. I also notice that for the line above the HTC logo, towards the right, the moulding dips in ever so slightly. ONce again looking at the inside back, there is some kind of component fixed there. So the cases are just not that precise I'm afraid. Check some of the teardown pictures so you can see the inside of the back casing and you will understand what I mean. It is not just a shell, but an intricate moulding of internal bits as well.

Keyboard vibration & camera lens glass

Evening guys.
I just wanted to know if anyone else has this problem. The vibration on the stock keyboard on my hox is very strong, I suppose it feels like the whole phone is rattling, volume rocker etc. I've used my friends HTC one x, and his seems 'firm' and not as powerful - basically how it should be.
Also the piece of glass that is meant to protrude the camera lens moves. I put my thumb over it earlier and applied the tiniest bit of pressure and the glassed moved in but then came back out. I also noticed that the actual camera lens isn't centered its more offset to the right hand side.
Are these normal, only had the phone for 3 months.

For me, I'd consider that faulty. My OneX camera glass is attached firmly. Return to seller.

Returned the device and have had it swapped. They said that the camera is loose as it was also miss aligned. The glass on the camera is meant to protrude the back of the camera lip a little - not be pushed back into the device...

Crash, smash!!

Hi guys,
Little sad story here.
After not even 10 days of life my Galaxy Note 2 fell from my bedside table face down onto tiled floor and smashed the front glass! (my cat did that, I know it's was on purpose, that's why I now have a cat fur bedside mat).
I'm ordering a new front screen glass as the display and everything still works fine.
Only thing, which is weird, running a system test it shows the proximity sensor stuck to far. I did notice that during calls the screen would not switch off. Before the crash the proximity sensor worked fine.
What do you think the reason might be? I am attaching a picture of the phone. Do you guys think the cracks on top of the two sensors near the front camera might "confuse" the proximity sensor?

Also, I will update you on the front screen replacement and its results.. Fingers crossed...

First off, feel very sad for you pal.
I'm quite sure that the proximity sensor is damaged from the fall, so you might have to ask your SC to check it once when you'll go to replace the front glass.
Besides, another shatter story, shows this device's build quality is sub par. No device should break, let alone shatter, from a fall like that, one or two dents would be more than enough. What was the Gorilla doing when it hit the surface anyway?

but yeah like jujuburi said, the fall might have dislodged or damaged the proximity sensor.It could also be the crack over the sensor, because the glass is no longer aligned, it could possibly be confusing the device but rather unlikely.

Its obvious that the crack in front of the proximity sensor is messing with it. Under direct sunlight you should be able to look at the proximity sensor and see if its not aligned otherwise its just the crack.

I have noticed that the proximity sensor still works, as it is sufficient to put the phone near a really bright light to get the screen to turn on again. It's just a bit fidgety to do that and end the conversations...
Still waiting for the new glass to arrive from Hong Kong, we'll see what happens next...
Regarding the fall, the phone was connected to the charger and was facing down on the bedside table as the LED stays on after finishing charging and that morning it was annoying me enough...
The bedside table is about 60 to 70cm tall and the floor is made of old terracotta tiles, very hard and uneven: I guess one of the tiles corners must have contributed to the damage.
I agree that the Gorilla glass should be a bit more resistant but just a few days before the smash, a friend dropped it while he grabbed it and it literally flew across the room and hit a hard floor and it was perfectly fine afterwards, not even a scratch!

Will update you all when u get the new glass.
Anyone has some good tips about how to replace it? I have seen some YouTube videos about it and, although time consuming, it seems possible...
Only thing I don't understand clearly, will the screen glue back on afterwards? Or is there anything I need to know about it?

AOK now. afterwards, I tried to pry apart the digitizer glass. In my Note II it is bonded with transparent gum covering the entire LCD. No way to replace only the digitizer on my version of the Note II (I317)
Mine cost $USD 250
Your crack is right over the sensor, so I would expect the sensor itself is fine.
The digitizer glass is the Achilles heel of the device. The rest of it seems normally robust.
I think the glass is so big that it can crack from a twist as well as a drop.
And the glass is very scratch resistant, but very thin and brittle.

Where did u fix urs? Did u call Samsung? Mine is shattered too, well in my case besides the phone i broke my face too got 6 stitches. Long story though lol.... But where did u get it fixed?

I got it from eBay from China for the equivalent of about 40USD...

managed to replace the glass and working well now. Only problem is that in the process of detaching the broken glass I messed up the adhesive around the back and menu buttons so I need to get new one too. The new screen sits raised because of the extra thickness of the messed adhesive so touch responsiveness is not great but will be fixed as soon as the new adhesive arrives.

Well, hey man, kudos to you...
First thing I do when I get a touchscreen device is place a screen protector on it; and I regard that as a pretty major hassle as far as annoying hassles go. Yet you seem to have done a near flawless job with something as crucial as replacing the screen itself; I'm impressed. Hope you get that last little fixed as well, mate.
(On a side note, even with the screen protector I managed to screw up and there's a tiny air bubble just between the home button and the screen itself... So it's invisible when the phone's in use but just annoying enough to notice when the screen is off and the contrast between the black screen and the grey bubble is more obvious).

i really sorry to hear that. hope you can manage your behavior to a better one.

Or simply your proximity connector is loose inside your phone after the cat crash. If you are going to replace the screen yourself, make sure you check all the connectors inside your phone.

From my own opinion, the sensor not damaged but just the crack just across the sensor, just change the glass and our will be fixed, but as what i know, it's not a easy job to change the glass, as it glued together with the display, hope you will manage to change the glass if success, please share us your experience here

Gorilla Glass isn't shatter or crack resistant, it's designed to be scratch resistant. It's hardness actually makes it more prone to cracking.
