GMail syncs by itself but auto-sync is OFF (logcat inside) - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

hi all, having an issue with my GMail app...
Sometimes when I open my GMail app, it will start to sync with the servers even though auto-sync is OFF. I understand auto-sync means it should push the emails whenever I get them, but this issue is different because GMail will sync as if the refresh button has been pressed.
I got a fresh logcat right before I opened GMail and the "auto sync" occurred
thanks in advance

When you open gmail, it simple auto refresh, as it is supposed to work (sync or not synch doesn't make difference..twitter does the same )

thanks, i was unaware that this was the standard case

How about this one. It has been driving me nuts since I came to Android in July of 2010.
But anyways, I will check email. Ok. I understand the syncing when I open the app. That's fine. But still frustrating when I go to look for an email, and it keeps pushing me back up because its loading more email. I tilurned it OFF for a reason. Lol. But anyways, I would open the app. Then go off and do other stuff, open other apps, etc, etc. Go have dinner with the wife, etc. But I go back into the app and it has loaded more email. Sync is off. It finished loading all of them from earlier. But magically there are new emails... It's pissing me off. Lol. Feedback and emails to Google has gone unheard.
And I try and post something on the Google support forums, and It won't let me. Signed in and everything. But it says I am not allowed to. Funny how Google wants us to tell them all feedback, but we can't.
Despite all this, I am still very anti-Apple. But it is frustrating that I have auto sync OFF for a reason. But it is giving me the bird.

problem sharing URL with gmail

If you click and hold on the address bar in the browser you get the option to share a URL. choose this and then choose to share via GMAIL. it sends fine. however, the mail never gets delivered. Not until you actually go into your gmail app and refresh. Then the mail gets sent/delivered. If you choose to send a link using the MAIL application (hotmail for example) it sends immediately. Is this a HTC problem or a gmail app issue? anyone notice this? I would prefer to share URLs via gmail, but hotmail works and gmail doesn't. not properly anyway.
I've just tried this and it works fine for me - shared a URL via Gmail and it got delivered fine without having to go into Gmail.
Regards,
Dave
Ok I figured this out.
If you click and hold on the browser address bar to share a page, you can share via peep, facebook, gmail, mail, message, etc.
If you choose HTC MAIL widget (usually set up with exchnage or hotmail) it will send out the mail immediatley.
If you choose to use gmail to share the page it gets sent correctly, but it will just sit in your gmail outbox until you either open the gmail app and refresh, or else turn on the sync. Using the HTC MAIL widget does not require you to turn on sync. It just gets sent. Gmail needs the sync turned on to send the mail.
Not a big deal, but it means I'm more likley to use hotmail to share url links via email now, because its quicker, instant, and does not require me to enable sync which is great. I don't need to pull in weather, friendstream, gmail, and everything else. I can just hit "share via mail" send. done.
I guess its a gmail app problem.

If you have sync turned off, it's a problem with the user, not the app!

haha. fair enough Dave.
yeah I suppose I incorrectly expected it to work without sync turned on becuase the hotmail (htc mail widget) does. No biggy.
cheers for the replies.

One question though - why do you have sync disabled? If you don't want to sync everything (e.g. twitter/weather), just switch off those individually or change the schedule of those items to something more appropriate.
Regards,
Dave
I suppose the reason I don't normally have sync on is that I used to just do everything manually. i.e. just refresh the weather manually if I looked at it. Or refresh friendstream manually as I looked at it. Or open gmail if I wanted to check it etc. I suppose its a habit to save battery life, but I'll look into it now that you mention it, and maybe just set these things to update once per day etc. Then I can override that manually for each service as required, plus gmail would send instantly if I do it that way. Cheers, I'll have a look at doing that.

G-Mail doesn't push on CM7 RC4

I just updated to CM7 RC4 and everything is working great. I simply thought I didn't get any g-mails recently. I found out they aren't being pushed. Is this a common problem or is this something that I can fix?
May not be a CM thing per se, my gmail hasn't been pushed as frequently either. Verified by using pc browser and sending myself gmail from another account, it was at least a couple minutes before it got to device, was in pc browser in seconds.

I've been using the CM7 nightlies as my "daily driver" for months now. Never had a problem receiving Gmail. Sometimes the phone will let me know there's a new email a few seconds before I see it come into the web interface on my laptop.
The only suggestion I can offer is to make sure that your sync settings are still setup properly. From your home screen: Menu > Settings > Accounts & Sync. Make sure Background Data and Auto-Sync are both checked. Then make sure that your Google account shows up below, click on it, and make sure that "Sync Gmail" is checked
Mine can take up to 30 minutes to push mail, used to be a lot faster. I thought there was a setting for how often GMail checked email but I can't find any. So not sure if it ever existed or if Google removed that option. Also not sure if this is only a CM7 thing or happens with Sense based ROMs too.
edit: this only happens on my linked accounts (hotmail, ISP email, work email). mail sent directly to my gmail account comes in almost as soon as its sent. there is no setting in gmail (web based) that i can find that changes the frequency that it checks the other mail accounts, looks like the default is every 30 minutes.

Interval sync settings are generally removed from apps once they achieve true push functionality, since at that point they are moot.
It's odd that we are experiencing such drastically different things. I don't have any idea why mine come in instantaneously while yours take up to 30 minutes. Very strange indeed.

This only recently started happening as all my mail used to be pushed to my phone a a lot faster. The change happened within the last two months so I think Google changed its policies as to how often they querry the other services for mail.
happens from time to time. go into settings, applications, gmail and clear data / cache. this will fix it.
Note : you will have to go into gmail settings after your inbox syncs and set your settings up again (ringtone, vibrate, etc)

No worries, I noticed the same thing when I installed CM7 for the first time the other day. Took me a while to realize why. It also took me a while to figure out how to turn the vibrate back on when I type a message!

[DERP] Facebook 1.9.1 doesn't restore contact sync

under 'accounts and settings' i'm finding facebook contacts sync like it was before gingerbread 2.3.3 came out
Yeah. It always shows there. But when you try to add it to sync, it just goes back to the page that shows you accounts that are already synced. it never adds FB.

Doubt it. Its always been like this. Since Android 2.3.4 Facebook camera sync has been broken. Don't think they're about to bust it out. Could be wrong based on how responsive Facebook has been the last couple weeks as far as the app goes, but guess we'll see.

Well hopefully they leave OUT the functionality bit that automatically DELETED phone numbers from your address book when someone takes their phone number off their facebook profile.
I lost close friend's phone numbers more than once on my old Droid X because of this "functionality"
Facebook can't add it back since Google blocks com.facebook.katana in the sync providers package on the Nexus line.
Google removed it since Facebook doesn't allow exporting of contracts.

GNex 4.0.4 stock and I cannot add the sync option at all: i click on ADD ACCOUNT, choose facebook but then nothing happens 9see attached image)
What I find interesting is that my Accounts and Sync now shows that Facebook is synced with my G-Nex.
It always used to be that I could go to "add account" and "add" facebook. However, when I would click on the button to add it, it would simply go back to the "add account" screen. It would not show Facebook as an account.
I havent tried in a while, but I noticed today that it said Facebook was an account on the phone and it showed the green sync button. I clicked to refresh and it did it's thing and said that it was "refreshed at whatever the time was.
Anyhow, I never had it say that it was synced before, but it does now. Seems like others have had this happen as well, but I figured I would report it as it is something new for me.
Stock Rom, Not rooted or anything. FB version 1.9.3.
Also, while it says that it is synced, when I go into my "people" app it shows Facebook as being synced, but when I click on it to show the facebook contacts it only shows one, and that is my own info.
Like I said though, my phone never even showed that FB was even an option, let alone actually synced so I figured I would report. thanks.

The change happened with an update to ICS. Blocked providers will now still show under Accounts even though sync'ing is still disabled in the OS itself for that particular package name.

I'm on stock 4.0.4 And been on it for a while. I never had it say that it was actually synced before though. I've had the option to sync Which always failed when I attempted to do it. Now it not only shows that it has the option to sync but it also shows that it is synced with Facebook.

[Q] Email Does not sync Automatically

hello everyone
I got the ONE X last night, and I am having a problem in automatically receiving my Emails.
I have set An Exchange Email, Gmail, and Yahoo mail using the device's mail app.
the "Auto-Sync" is Deactivated to save battery and avoid syncing other accounts.
in the mail settings of the Exchange Account, I set the "Peak time Sync" to (Push mail) which means (I guess!!) I would get the Email as soon as it reaches the account.
in the Gmail and Ymail, the Least time available on the "Peak time sync" is 5 minutes.
in either case, I am unable to receive the Emails unless I start the app and manually refresh!!!
the Email reaches Ymail or Gmail on the Laptop, I wait for more than 20 minutes with no notification on the device!
I didn't have this problem when I had the Galaxy SII, and sometimes the Exchange Email reached the device before the Laptop!!
this is very annoying and any suggestion is welcome!
I do not wanna go for the Ymail app from the Market or any other Exchange support app!
NOTE: the Gmail application in the Device behaves the same way,, does not sync until I manually refresh from the app itself
If you want to receive pushed data, auto-sync must be on.

Does any one have an idea about this issue??

turn it on and turn off auto sync manually for each app you don't want it to sync

possibly. but you can either turn it on and have push email or leave it off and have to manually check.
afaik auto-sync is a system wide switch for all updating. if you manually turn it off for everything other than mail only mail will be polling for updates. and there was some stuff a couple of years ago (with the iphone) that seemed to conclude that push is actually pretty battery efficient.

Jelly Bean and Exchange Calendar - not working

Hi,
Since I upgraded to Jelly Bean, I can't get the stock calendar app to sync with my exchange account... It did work just fine with ICS 4.0.4 stock calendar, as well as with Touchdown. With JB, I have not been able to get it working with stock calendar... but it does work with Touchdown.
Under settings in the calendar stock app, I see the following entries:
- General settings
- my exchange account
- my gmail account
- About Calendar
When I click on the exchange account, it says " no calendar".
I thought it might have been an issue with the way I restored the account from TB. I restarted from scratch, same problem. Did several factory resets, same. Thought it could have been a bad flash, now I have flashed 4.1.1 and still the exact same problem...
I really don't see anymore what can be causing this. It is my only problem with JB which otherwise is just great...
Any suggestion on where the problem could come from?
Thank you.
Ah, strange. I just thought that I'd acticate "automatic push" mode, and guess what, my calendar items showed up in the stock calendar app...
I have always had my exchange account configured to manual (I want to decide when I see my work email) but this never did have an effect on calendar sync... Very strange.
I leave the topic here in case someone would have the same problem...
Thanks for that, been annoying me all day. Works a treat

Thanks for finding that solution. I tried several things last night and couldn't get it working. I was running ICS on my Rezound without that issue but I'm guessing it was due to Sense. I'm not a fan of automatic push but my exchange calendar is important.
two methods.
one: use exchang mail dirctly with out gmail.
then: use a google account and calender is automatically sync after that

I think that activating push was the way for the calendar to start syncing but then I went back to manual only for what I think is the email setting of Exchange account, and I have calendar syncing fine, while emails are fetched only when I explicitly ask. To me the activation of push was only a trigger, that I was able to undo later on...
That worked for me as well.

I've been helping my Dad with his T-Mobile Galaxy SII on AOKP JB Milestone, he's having the same issue right now with his Exchange Calendar not showing all appointments. Push has always been enabled. However it only shows random items from his Calendar, not all the items. I've wiped the device, reflashed, set up the Exchange account before the Google account, nothing seems to fix it. Only a few items from the Exchange Calendar show up.....
I've been searching on this issue it feels like forever now and your post is the closest I've found to the issue lol
Thanks for this! I was frustrated because the Google Calendar sync doesn't sync everything for some reason, but then I couldn't get the exchange calendar to sync. I switched to push, set up to display the calendar, and switched back to manual sync.
We'll see how it goes.
So I can also confirm the calendar continues to sync after setting sync back to manual.
I got a new calendar entry that synced and also edited another and those changes are also on my phone.
I still have problems to sync my exchange agenda with HTC desire HD, try all the suggestion meantion here.
Somebody a other suggestion.
I have no issues with ICS
Thanks

1) add exchange account, but set sync to "manual"
2) go to Mail and download all your mail ("sync")
3) Go to Calendar and see that you can't add your Exhchange calendar as a possible calendar
4) go back and set your Exchange settings to "push"
5) go back to calendar and see your Exhange calendar has appeared
