[Q] Desire exchange - phone "image" possible? - Desire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello all,
by a warranty case I will have to exchange my htc desire bravo with another one. Actually I have installed the SuperNova Gingerbread ROM with internal memory placed on my sdcard.
Is there a way or how would you do this to make an image or backup to easily restore it on the new phone. The new one will not be rooted, so I will have to do it first, right?
Thanks in advance for any suggestions/help
Best regards
gigi

Yes you have to root. How to backup is answered by faq no 1 on supernova site.

Hi Droidzone,
on the supernova site the faq #1 is about sdcard partition. But I have found a section about nandroid. Is this the right way?
And lufc, excuse please my posting fault.
Best regards
gigi

Yes, nandroid from recovery.
Remember to root your phone once it gets back from the warranty, and remember to flash the same recovery as you have had before the giveaway. Just in case.
And - do not give your minisd card with the phone to warranty.

Hi remmyhi,
thank you very much. Actually I have on my phone the ROM Manager 5.0.0.6 installed. It shows me the ClockWorkMod Recovery 5.0.2.0 working. But if I boot into the recovery system for making a backup it shows me the version 2.5.0.7.
I am a little bit confused about this. Should there be also the 5.0.2.0 version if I want to backup/restore?
Best regards
gigi

Rom Manager won'rt recognize its own recovery, better to screw it and go through recovery manually. To be sure, you could flash the newer CWM recovery or ext4 via fastboot (it's really easy, i'd say even easier than rom manager), then use the backup feature and make sure everything is backed up (i had a broken CWM recovery that would not backup my sd-ext).
I still wonder that you installed a Rom without backing up your stock system.
Oh, and it is advisable to restore to stock before sending the phone away.

Hello muellersmattes,
thank you very much. I think, I have enough informations now. Thanks guys for your advice.

[Q] Help Hero user to root Desire

Hi
I'm an HTC Hero user trying to help my friend to root his Desire. I thought it should be exactly the same as with Hero but seems like there are some small differences get me confused.
1. I rooted the phone with unrevoked3. I'm used to AmonRA recovery and I cannot find nandroid backup in ClockworkMod recovery neither the SD format options. How do you backup the flash in ClockworkMod?
2. I downloaded the AmonRA image from here and tried to replaced the originally installed ClockworkMod but I can see no change in the recovery menu. Anything special should be done before changing the recovery?
3. Can you forward me to some Desire ROM comparison so I won't have to go through thousands of post to find the right ROM (I've already done it for my Hero, don't want spending so much time again).
Thanks.

i cant find where it helps me backing up my telstra ROM
im hopeless at reading
You have to boot into recovery and take a nandroid backup.
Install rom manager (lite is fine) from market. In this app install clockwork recovery. Boot into recovery from the rom manager app and then choose backup in recovery menu. This will create an image of your current system which is stored on your SD card.

[Q] ROM Manager not working

Hi
I have a problem with rom manager where it doesn't work after rebooting into recovery. When I next start Rom manager is gives me the option of reporting an error.
Also I cant seem to install any rom other than CM7 and Leedroid on the phone manually although im assuming this is because I have made mistakes partitioning the sd card manually. (Always get stuck at white htc screen)
Any help would be much appreciated
Thanks
Just forget Rom Manager! It causes more problems than it solves!
Furthermore, all operations it does can be done with recovery or GParted (if recovery does not support the partitioning of SD card).
Which roms besides CM7 and Leedroid are you trying to install? Made sure you followed their installation guides very carefully?
The rom I'm trying to get back on is Insertcoin but I cant get it to work. Im currently using clockwork recovery but cant seem to find the option to partition using it. Is there a recovery I could switch to which saves me using gparted?
Also slightly off topic, whats the best way to backup apps? I don't want to lose whatsapp converstaions etc
Current most recommended recoveries are 4EXT and RMD. With both you can partition your SD card ready for A2SD/A2SD+.
I always backup my apps with Titanium Backup and never had any problems.

[Q] Backup software

Hello all,
I'm sorry if my question was answered in this forum, but I wasn't able to find the answer to be 100% sure.
I used Rezo609's all in one utility, so I unlocked the bootloader, rooted the phone and when doing this, the software made a backup of my phone (it's saved on the SD card).
I use Android 2.3.5. and now I'd like to try Android 4.0 on my WFS.
My question is, when it will not work for me (or I don't like it), can I restore the phone from that backup? I mean my 2.3.5, my apps, contacts, emails etc?
Thank you so much, and again I'm sorry if it was posted somewhere here

I don't know what backup it made coz i haven't used that utility ever.
But here's another way of being sure.
I suppose you have clockwork Recovery installed already, If you don't, download rom manager from market and do.
Boot into recovery.
>go to backup and restore and backup.
>It will take some time.
> Now in sd card, you'll see a folder named clockwork, save that folder somewhere in your pc cozz that is a lifesaver for you.
> Install whatever rom u want now.
> If you want to restore, just go to clockwork and restore.
Hope i helped.
Best way....... Download rom manager from the play store... Then select "Backup current rom" If backs up your rom.....
Thank you both guys!
The clockwork recovery is part of the utility so I have the backup done, that was the backup I was writing in my first post.
So right now I have to find the best 4.0 ROM

Cyanogenmod - Stock and S-Off

Hi all,
Please excuse the n00b questions, recent convert from iOS.. and apologies if this has been covered 1000 times, I could not find what I was looking for with the search function.
I currently own an HTC Desire (Bravo GSM) running 2.2.2 which I have set to Rooted/S-Off. I've been reading about Cyanogenmod and want to give 7.2 a go however I would like to have the option of being able to restore exactly what I've got currently i.e. retaining the Rooted/S-Off without having to go through Revolutionary again etc if at all possible.
There are plenty of guides detailing how to install Cyanogenmod which look straightforward, and I've seen mention of restoring to stock being easy, however there isn't much in the way of info regarding retaining my current Rooted/S-Off status and how to actually perform the restore. I've installed ClockworkMod/Nandroid and have copied the contents of the SD card to my PC as I understand the SD card is cleared during Cyanogenmod's install.
If anyone could give me an insight on whether my aims are possible and a quick guide to restoring (ie, which files I'd need to chuck back onto the SD card to restore), I'd be most grateful.
S-off, root, cwm recovery, SD card partition and the radio survive every time you install a new ROM. You don't/can't back them up. When you do a nandroid backup, it backs up all your data (apps, messages, etc).
Since you already took a nandroid backup, you're good to flash cyanogen mod. Just ensure you've partitioned your SD card correctly and full wipe is done before flashing.
Sent from my Nexus 10 using XDA Premium HD app
Dont forget, download gapps to flash after the rom.
Gentlemen, I can see why this forum is so highly regarded. Thank you.
Could anyone let me know if a guide exists to restore from the Nandroid backup?
I would also recommend 4ext recovery, its way better than CWM recovery.
And just so u know if uv made a nandroid backup using CWM recovery, u wont be able to restore it with 4ext recovery (if that makes sense)
So first thing, google 4ext recovery, download and install the "4ext recovery updater app" then open the app and flash 4ext recovery. Once thats done ul have to backup all important files etc + nandroid backup and save to PC coz ul need to partition ur sdcard and that will wipe everything.
Theres a guide in my sig for partitioning with 4ext.
After reading this some time ago, I wonder why everyone wants or needs S-Off.

U need s-off because the desire internal memory is piss poor and with s-off u can change ur hboot to maximize data/user memory. Also u can use fastboot commands, flash radio etc etc.
Desire internal memory partition is 250/40/147 (system, cache, data) so if u flash a custom rom that is only 80mb then ur wasting 170mb in system partition so by using a custom hboot u can maximize ur data partition. Like if u use a rom like mildwild and the rom is 80mb then u can use a hboot that i made where the partition layout is 90/5/342 so ur not wasting any mb

Haha i was wondering coz u posted a link for the htc One. The htc desire, u really need s-off but for newer devices u dont (not sure if u can even s-off them anyway) coz they all have enough memory and an unlocked bootloader is enough in my opinion.
